summary How we understand the world is directly affected by our position in it. Constellations are simply the result of cognitive alignments related to our location in the universe, the horizon simply based on proximity and time. Relative Positioning explores the power of position in architecture: specifically, how Anamorphic projection and perspectival techniques can generate space and challenge our understanding of its form. Architectural illusion and perspectival deceptions have been investigated since antiquity in order to alter the perception of a given space, primarily used in an illusionary or optical manner. However, Anamorphic projection offers the potential to create dynamic spatial experiences that go well beyond simple projections or images/shapes simply painted onto a surface. Within Relative Positioning, architectural form exists in 3-dimensions (real, physical) but is perceived via procession and emergent perceptions based on choreographed alignments and foci—making it possible for a duality of visual perception to occur. Much like the diagonal movement through Villa Savoye or the space created by Matta-Clark’s cut, views and alignments add value, create perceptual shifts. One no longer views the architectural form as a whole, but as a collection of cinematic moments, fragments, serial form: a tension of object-qualities that elicits spatial ambiguity that puts pressure on the ‘real’ and opens up a world of wonder and excitement. This is a new form of collage.

summary The Klimasymmetry research project is part of ongoing investigations that ask how the design of a surface emanating radiant heating and cooling can influence the non-visual spatial boundaries created by asymmetrical thermal conditions. This research investigates the nature of the surface as an initiator of a thermal environment in an attempt to locate thermal tactility and the spatial perception according to radiant heat transfer. Surface qualities such as the quantity of area and thermal capacity of the material affects the ability of the panel to emit or absorb electromagnetic radiation, informing the geometry, topography, and location of each panel relative to the human body.

summary This short paper explores some of the connotations of the words: ‘heritage’, ‘built environment’ and ‘vernacular architecture’. Then the paper indicates different contextual approaches to find out if a new design is a ‘fit’ or ‘misfit’ in its surroundings. The paper concludes that appropriateness and fit are very relative judgements that highly relate to framing and mind set.

title Visualizing Climate Data as a 3D Climate Torus

summary In this research, a system is developed to visualize climate data as a 3D geometry, a climate torus. The system extracts time, dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed information. Four points are created on a psychrometric chart using maximum temperature, minimum temperature, maximum humidity, and minimum humidity of a day. A closed curve passing these four points is drawn as a profile curve. 365 profile curves are generated for each day of the year. These curves are rotated along the vertical axis of the psychrometric chart, each at the incremental angle of 365/360, so that these curves rotate full 360 degrees to represent one year period. The system then generates a climate torus by lofting all the curves. Wind speed information is coded on the climate torus as holes. The diameter of the holes denotes wind speed. The climate torus is 3D printed after giving a minimum thickness to the surface. This process was assigned to sophomore architecture students. They showed great interest and gained better understanding of climate responsive design through the task. The climate torus has the future potential of coding more climate elements into it, e.g. solar radiation as colour, precipitation as texture, etc.

title Architects' Cognitive Behaviour in Parametric Design

summary This paper presents the results of a protocol study of professional architects' cognitive behaviour in a parametric design environment. A design experiment was conducted in which eight professional architects completed an architectural conceptual design task in a typical parametric design environment -Rhino and Grasshopper. Protocol analysis was then applied to analyse the cognitive behaviour of the architects. In analysing the protocol data, the FBS ontology adopted for developing the coding scheme was sub-divided into design knowledge and rule algorithm classes as the means to capture designers' cognitive behaviour. Applying the method of cumulative analysis, results of the relative cognitive effort expended on design knowledge and rule algorithm classes have been compared and are discussed in the paper.

summary The purpose of this paper is to present a work in progress pertaining to drone pose estimation and flight calibration. This paper intends to underline the increasing importance of determining alternative path planning instruments through accurate localization for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with the purpose of achieving complex flight operations for the emerging applications of autonomous robotics in surveying, design, fabrication, and on-site operations. This research is based on the implementation of novel technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR), Robot Operating System (ROS), and computational approaches to define a drone calibration methodology, leveraging existing methods for drone path planning. Drones are equipped with measurement systems to provide geo-location and time information such as onboard Global Positioning System (GPS) sensors, and Inertial Measurement Units (IMU). As stated in previous research, to increase navigation capabilities, measurements and data processing algorithms have a critical role (Daponte et al. 2015). The outcome of this work in progress showcases valuable results in calculating and assessing accurate positioning for UAVs, and developing data exchanges in transmission, reception, and tracking.

summary In this paper we use analysis tools from Space Syntax and objective observation of the human behaviour, to understand the impact of landmarks in the walking patterns of users of spaces. Our case study was a large exterior public open space (University Campus), in which participants could walk freely and simultaneously be tracked by several sensors. We carried Space Syntax analysis for this space, and then collected Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking information and used a mobile eye-tracking device to acquire eye gaze information. The collected data allowed us to map and analyse each subject behaviour in the public space. A more specific analysis was done to four selected landmarks that, according to the Space Syntax analysis, were the ones with higher integration values. Results indicate that landmarks with such higher integration values show also a larger count of fixations and saccades of gaze interaction.

title BIM and Parametric Design in Academia and Practice: The Changing Context of Knowledge Acquisition and Application in the Digital Age

summary This paper explores the consequences of the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Parametric Design on contemporary architectural practice and associated changes to the roles and responsibilities therein. Knowledge changes associated to new skill-sets of young graduates and their positioning among experienced professionals will be analysed. On one hand the paper will scrutinise how the use of BIM and Parametric design challenges design and delivery of projects, on the other hand the paper will reflect on the extent academic institutions can or should respond to the challenges. What are the opportunities inherent to these changes in practice? How should they influence current academic curricula that include computational design and digital architecture? Based on targeted interviews with recent graduates who entered practice, a number of responses to the challenges and opportunities will be presented by the author for further consideration.

summary In the natural world, biological matter is structured through growth and adaptation, resulting in hierarchically structured forms with tunable material computation. Conventional digital design tools and processes, by contrast, prioritize shape over matter, lacking integration between modeling, analysis, and fabrication. We present a novel computational environment and workflow for the design and additive manufacturing of large-scale hierarchically structured objects. The system, composed by custom multi-barrel deposition attached to robotic positioning, integrates material properties, fabrication constraints and environmental forces to design and construct full-scale architectural components. Such components are physically form-found by digitally extruding natural polymers with functionally graded mechanical and optical properties informed by desired functionality and executed through flow-based fabrication. In this approach, properties such as viscosity, velocity, and pressure embed information in two-dimensional printing patterns and induce three-dimensional shape formation of the fabricated part. As a result, the workflow associates physical material and fabrication constraints to virtual design tools for modeling and analysis, challenging traditional design workflows and prioritizing flow over form.

title Identifying Opportunity Spaces for Design Research in South America: Working with Grassroots and Community Groups

summary As design research continues to gain momentum in South America, design researchers and practitioners in the region have begun to consider how to the field may address regionally-specific issues, including on-going political struggles. By bringing approaches such as Participatory Design and Adversarial Design that consider political aspects of design, local researchers have explored various forms that these two approaches could take that are tailored to the needs and values of different communities across the region. This paper focuses on identifying opportunities for developing design research projects in community-based and grassroots-oriented contexts. The paper presents the findings of our study about the understanding and experience of design researchers and experts who have been working closely with community groups and grassroots organisations in South America. Five themes emerged, highlighting opportunities and challenges related to positioning contemporary design research in the region, integration of adversarial perspectives into design processes, leveraging local obstacles through creativity, and the potential of building capacity within community groups and grassroots organisations for sustainability and autonomy.

summary Space accepts pervasive technologies as an architectural feature inherent to design. As such, architecture is developing various links to video surveillance, crafting a new use and a new user of space. Consequently, a new type and layer of interaction is taking place in architectural space. We extend the experimental nature of 3D Virtual Environments to encompass our surveillance studies, and explore the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV). This paper contributes to the thinking of the architect positioning herself as the user of space while designing, replacing her as an empowered orchestrator of all the technologies attached to buildings.

summary The article presents and discusses premises, processes and results of the workshop ''Offerings - Game-performance" organized in 2015 as part of the experimental format of the III International Seminar “Representar”, structured by remote and multicentric activities. The workshop faces the pervasiveness of global positioning systems (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS) in the contemporary context, developing behavioral aesthetic works in order to update the concept of "drift" (Situacionist International) and to discuss some modes of urban perception that can be activated through the (mis)use of mobile interfaces and geolocation devices and the practice of artistic interventions in the city.
