summary The underlying thesis of the research described in this paper is that imaginative, model-based explorations may help us better understand iconic architectural artefacts, such as cultural heritage projects. In order to systematically consider and study architectural artefacts, it is essential for academics to reach a level of clarity – and potentially even consensus – concerning the domains of architectural design that may be considered relevant and to question - often implicitly – shared conceptions. This paper intends to communicate the results and findings of an in-depth case-based exploration on the basis of ten design artefacts, using a specially developed conceptual framework. Furthermore, the aim was to draw conclusions concerning the benefits and potentials of this approach in the context of heritage-based architectural research in an academic environment.

summary The definition of Research by Design (RD) as a research methodology is not yet well established. RD takes its position not only as a research method next to the 'traditional' sciences but also in relation to the creative design practice, where transdicsiplinarity is in essential role. Rather than defining architecture being transdisciplinary in itself, we see beneficial to conduct research together with various disciplines concerning the complexity of the life-world. Also in this interdisciplinary research group we are willing to hold on the designerly way of knowledge production. Of our practical experience working in an interdisciplinary research group shared values, research project management together with participation with evaluative aims were the most challenging aspects. At its best, attempt for genuine transcdisciplinarity was beneficial and rewarding, though sometimes challenging. We would like to target the discussion how we architects, as researchers identify in an interdisciplinary research group conducting transdisciplinary research.

summary A new approach to design - Curvilinear forms designed in synthetic digital space - indicates the direction of a new turn in architecture, interest in its structural and environmental aspect. The presented case studies show how curvilinear forms of such architecture coexist with the historic context and how they inscribe in to the existing urban fabric with a complex historical substance. Following the Zeitgeist, the new architecture reconfigures the expression, reception and materiality, as well as uses the context to validate its existence. The features of this new architecture may be referred to the achievements of the Baroque and considered in a wider context of historical changes in the urban fabric.

summary Architectural design benefits from a design collaboration between architect and engineers that starts early in the design process. This paper presents a proposal for a new structural language developed to support an early design collaboration between architect and structural engineer. This language expresses the essential characteristics of the conceptual design of the structural engineer, and requires a limited amount of structural engineering knowledge for the architect to comprehend. The language is evaluated in different case studies with architecture and interior architecture students: they show the students' appreciation as it is found easy to learn and use, and a helpful tool in conceptual design collaboration with a structural engineer. Although the language is developed for manual 3D sketching, the paper briefly indicates its potentials for digital 3D representations and more intelligent CAAD like Multi-Agent System (MAS).

summary Especially in early design phases, there is still potential to achieve collective design in architecture. To investigate the possibilities of mass collaboration, this study is based on a web application (http://lmnarchitecture.com) which implements the same technology that present software development stands on. Within those plans, the system calculates the resemblance between the models utilizing an algorithm that computes the difference between texts. The system requires the users to choose one model that is existent, and calculates the resemblance in real-time. As a result, a tree diagram is collectively achieved each having the link of inheritance. Two types of “Bots” (automated plan generation) was implemented to examine the effect of human-machine collaboration. As a result, there were 1750 models submitted in three months. Throughout the models created by humans, in this system, 49% of the models were inherited by the same user, and 23.04% of the models inherited bots.

keywords The paper discusses co-design, development, production, application of TreeHugger (see Figure 1). The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

summary Key parameter of a reasoning process supporting real time performance is the use of active heuristics that facilitate the achievement of goals in a timely manner (Dodiawala et al. 1989). A real time approach should incorporate speed, timeliness and adaptation during the execution of tasks. Speed and efficient knowledge processing are addressed for the solution of complex building engineering problems, such as the calibration of Building Energy Models (BEM) to the actual performance data. During retrofit projects, calibrated BEM models aid the design process, and provide a solid base for performative assessments. Despite the demand for building performance evaluations, BEM calibration remains a work-intensive task (Lam et al. 2014). This study proposes a time efficient framework for BEM calibration input data management based on the methodology of a blackboard artificial intelligence knowledge processing system. The resulting model was used for sequential data mining for the energy assessment during the renovation of a commercial building.

Bringing together the craftsmen of the Department for Wood Technology, the geometers of the Department for Arts and Technology, the young industrial design office Lucy.D and the roboticists of the Association for Robots in Architecture, the research project explores new approaches on how to couple high-tech robotic arms with high-end wood fabrication. In the eCAADe workshop, participants are introduced to KUKA|prc (parametric robot control, Braumann and Brell-Cokcan, 2011) and shown approaches on how to create their own digital fabrication tools for customized fabrication processes involving wood.

summary Architects have a renewed interest in surface structures and the renewable resource of wood, along with advanced digital design, analysis and machining techniques, offers a way of manifesting these forms. Wood is easily machined and has bending properties that lead to the ability to form curves. This paper looks at the properties of wood, informing design through its material characteristics. The research presented here contributes to this discourse through the development of large scale timber shell structures. We propose hyper efficient structures made out of laminated wood products to provide a new solution to long span construction while satisfying the demand for agency in form generation.

First, this article provides a characterization of the digital chain associated to the development of non-standard folded structures consisting of wood panels. The purpose is to study the architectural design process from parametric modeling (through CNC machining) and assembly operations to production by way of a full-scale experimental pavilion. Secondly, a number of analytical experiments have been performed towards the completion of the pavilion, in order to validate the design process.

summary With the rapid development of the digital fabrication technology, structural performance based design shows broad application prospects. Based on the research project "Reverse rafter", this paper aims to explore the possibility of simulating and re-applying Chinese traditional wood tectonics with structure performance based computational technology. Taking "eaves rafter" as research prototype, this project employed topology optimization as research method and “Millipede” as analysis tool. Through the comparison between the analysis results of traditional structure calculation and topology optimization method, this project revealed the underlying structural principles of "eaves rafter", based on which a modern reciprocal structure installation was generated through digital design method. CNC cutting technology was employed to ensure the fabrication accuracy in digital fabrication processes.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technologies including computer numerically controlled (CNC) milling, laser cutting and 3D printing are becoming cheaper and globally more accessible. Accordingly, many design professionals, academics and students have been able to experience the benefits and challenges of using digital fabrication in their designs. The use of digital fabrication in the education of architecture students has become normal in many schools of architecture, and there is a growing demand for computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) logic and fabrication knowledge in student learning. Clearly, architecture students are acquiring material base-thinking, time management, production methods and various software skills through this digital fabrication. However, it appears to be the case that architecture students use digital fabrication mainly in the final stage of their design or in their finishing work. In this study, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technologies have been used as a sketch tool rather than simply for fabricating a final product in the architectural design process and the advantages of this educational practice are demonstrated.

summary The following paper presents a reflection on computational design education in Architecture schools. For approaching this subject, the specific case of the Programming for Architecture course taught at Instituto Superior Técnico - Universty of Lisbon is presented and analyzed through the students' point of view. The aim of the course is to focus on representation methods through programming, introducing the fundamentals of computational approach to architectural design. We will explain and discuss the subject teaching methods, the structure of the course and the school environment. Also we will express the students' opinion regarding the class organization, the contents of the program and the usefulness of programming, as well as suggestions for an improved strategy for teaching computational methods to Architecture students.

summary This paper discusses current design and communication imaging techniques in a comparative analysis between three contemporary projects - the first, a new hotel concept in Sardinia, Italy, the second, an urban park in Mumbai, India, and the third, a new housing community in La Prusia, Nicaragua. Starting with an overview discussion problematizing the roots and current state of envisioning heritage, the paper first questions the common oversimplification of envisioning heritage as a strictly aesthetic or stylistic act. Next the paper explores the complex interplay between the design communication methods in each of the three case study projects, situating each in a critical global context. From there, the paper concludes with an expanded discussion of imaging as it relates to design thinking and communication through an examination of the techniques that were employed to graphically communicate each individual project.

summary This article delineates the process of developing the project "Urbanimals" - an interactive installation designed and realised in Bristol, UK, in 2015. As the case study research, it draws attention to the difficulties in designing interactive structures in urban spaces - from an architects' idea to a construction stage. There are four areas that are being investigated: (1) Modelling interactions, (2) Negotiating locations and logistics, (3) Developing hardware and (4) Performing the on-site observations. The project draws from the idea of Smart City (SC) as the concept of the urban environment with a certain level of responsiveness through implementing a technology-driven matter that expands city offer perceivable, but gentle and not hindering way. It highlights the possible applications of projection technology and the utilisation of the 3D modelling software which provides complex tools for creating animations, movements and interactions with future users. The article gives clues how to design more engaging interactions and how to deal with implementing them in public realm.

summary In this paper we examine the adaptations cellular automata (CA) are typically subjected to when they are applied to architectural designing. We argue that, despite a number of earlier studies that portrayed CA as generic generative design tools, the transition from generic CA to specific design tools is not yet well understood. To describe this transition, we first examine this aspect in a number of previous studies relating CA to architectural design. In a following detailed analysis of an applied design case study, we trace similarities between findings made in the literature review to findings made in the case study and extend them with additional observations. We conclude with a summary of challenges and opportunities met by architectural designers employing and developing CA for design purposes.

summary The methodology of mapping and programming spatial potentials are in need of a new platform – a kind of programming agenda - in order to achieve maximal result which would facilitate developmental goals. Namely, official physical and/or master plans, as well as strategic economic studies lack holistic approach. Economic heritage as a non-material form of heritage encompasses a vast array of forms which may be deeply rooted in a local environment. The emphasis is specifically on such implications and reverse impact on physical planning and strategic economic development related to the potentials of non-material values in the region of Istia in Croatia.
