summary This article deals with the technique of photogrammetry by using the Autodesk 123D Catch® application for registration of facades of historical and cultural buildings in the city of Salvador. Four trials are carried out in different complexities to test the tool’s potential. The Igreja and Convento de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, the chosen architectural elements are the door and the cover of the Church, as in the Palacete das Artes, the rear facade and one of the sculptures of the gardens. The 123D Catch® is efficient for the purpose of architectural records, however, there are still limitations of technical and spatial order to be observed.

summary It is necessary for an architect to engage closely with structural design, to interpret their design idea thoroughly, and it requires carefully collaboration between architect and engineer. The structural performance based design is not only to obey structure principle but to explore different possibilities of engineer and architectural innovation. Architects could apply this method in the earlier stage of design, and it could provide the efficient solution for structure, create a new spatial experience and further improve the construction quality in the later phase of development. In comparison to structural performance-based design in history, the computational technology has made it possible for architects to implement further the structural knowledge in more dynamic and sophisticated environment. This paper will discuss the history development and current transformation of this method. Three research project will explain the current experimental design process and back the idea of this method.

summary The capability to observe the heterogeneous elements of knowledge networks in virtual environments, and the dynamics of these performative spaces, allows evaluating and reflecting on the quality of interactions in construction and recognition mediated processes. This paper presents the first results of an innovative proposal of visualization that integrates design methodologies and is based on an ad-hoc software for taking real-time information. As corollary, it debates about the relationship between representation, design and conception of space in a complex and augmented sociotechnical context, configured and experimented as a web of events that interacts at multiple levels of articulation.

summary In this paper we discuss a series of tools and strategies to support learner-centred construction education in the complexity of the era today (Bauman, 2000). By using these tools in the education of CAD and CAM in construction education at universities for the arts, design and architecture, we aim to support the student in the abstract aspects of Bloom's (1956) cognitive learning domain. In order to present a coherent spectrum of educational tools and strategies, we start with the introduction of a tool for problem-analysis. The tool is explained by applying it to the context of spatial design construction, digital design and fabrication. Then we shortly discuss the process of design-evaluation. Next we introduce three models for design-synthesis. Afterwards, a test case is used to elaborate on the different tools and strategies which are tested and evaluated.

In parametric design, the template can be changed throughout the design process, allowing to generate and test lots of versions without the need to return to the starting point of the project. The introduction of parametric design urbanism has great potential because several aspects pertaining to urban design such as density, use, shape, space and type can all be defined parametrically. Thus, this research aims to understand and analyze this theoretical procedure and contemporary methodology of urban design associated to new technologies,. It intends to analyze the advantages, disadvantages, applicability and improvement possibilities of this new way of designing the scale of the city and Brazil.

summary This research paper describes the implementation of virtual reality immersive simulation studios in academia, facilitated by the use of the “Virtual Sketching Method” (VSM). The VSM allows the basic expression of architectural forms and the perceptual experience of interior and exterior spaces. It fosters simulations based on render-less (low resolution) visualization in contrast to other simulation workflows based on render-more (high resolution) visualization techniques. It bridges between different types of media and supports iterative cycles of formulation, prototyping, and assessment. The paper reports on students’ learning outcomes and their qualitative correlation with the VSM usability and effectiveness in design learning.

summary This research builds upon a previous body of work focused on the relationship between surface geometry and heat transfer coefficients in thermal mass passive systems. It argues for the design of passive systems with higher fidelity to multivariable space between performance and perception. Rooted in the combination of form and matter, the intention is to instrumentalize design principles for the choreography of thermal gradients between buildings and their environment from experiential, spatial and topological perspectives (Figure 1). Our work is built upon the premise that complex geometries can be used to improve both the aesthetic and thermodynamic performance of passive building systems (Cupkova and Azel 2015) by actuating thermal performance through geometric parameters primarily due to convection. Currently, the engineering-oriented approach to the design of thermal mass relies on averaged thermal calculations (Holman 2002), which do not adequately describe the nuanced differences that can be produced by complex three-dimensional geometries of passive thermal mass systems. Using a combination of computational fluid dynamic simulations with physically measured data, we investigate the relationship of heat transfer coefficients related to parameters of surface geometry. Our measured results suggest that we can deliberately and significantly delay heat absorption re-radiation purely by changing the geometric surface pattern over the same thermal mass. The goal of this work is to offer designers a more robust rule set for understanding approximate thermal lag behaviors of complex geometric systems, with a focus on the design of geometric properties rather than complex thermal calculations.

summary The rapid development of new Virtual Reality (VR) devices such as the Oculus Rift and Google Cardboard together with Augmented Reality (AR) applications such as 3Dplus (by the Finnish company advice) or gaming software such as Unity3D and Unreal Engine 4 raises the question of how we can use these new interfaces and applications to access our increasingly data-rich models. In this paper we will summarise the results of a joint international workshop where students explored the use of these new interfaces on existing models. During the course of the workshop, the students built their own VR environments to test spatial perception and then used different types of housing models with these interfaces to find out what kind of information inside those data rich models is best suited to be accessed using these new interfaces. The question will be if there is any added value - besides the novelty factor - in using these new devices in combination with old models. To give an extra dimension to the virtual nature of the workshop, students collaborated with some of the tutors primarily digitally using the virtual models and other online tools (Skype/Twitter/discussion boards). By having collaboration through the medium of the virtual interactive model as the core communication method, the amount, type and methods of presenting the information is tested and evaluated. This is work in progress and we had to experience several problems that we could not overcome in the available time.

summary Novel digital fabrication platforms enable the design and construction of materially sophisticated structures with high spatial resolution in manufacturing. However, virtual-to-physical workflows and their associated software environments are yet to incorporate such capabilities. Our research sets the stage for seamless physical feedback workflows across media, disciplines and scales. We have coined the term Fabrication Information Modeling (FIM) to describe this approach. As preliminary methods we have developed four computational strategies for the design and digital construction of custom systems. These methods are presented in the context of specific design challenges and include a biologically driven fiber construction algorithm; an anatomically driven shell-to-wearable translation protocol; an environmentally-driven swarm printing system; and a manufacturing-driven hierarchical fabrication platform. We discuss and analyze these four challenges in terms of their capabilities to integrate design across media, disciplines and scales through concepts such as multi-dimensionality, media-informed computation and trans-disciplinary data.

summary The homogenization of our current building culture makes vernacular structures around the world extremely vulnerable to desuetude and calls to question how new forms of representation can highlight alternative facets of our built heritage. This paper explores the changing nature of heritage interpretation and offers new methods in representing vernacular structures, highlighting their exquisite atmospheric disposition through the use of state-of-the-art computer simulation programs. The ancient Anatolian region and its vast inventory of exemplary antiquities serves as the site of investigation, encompassing an area that stretches from the western Aegean coastline to the south eastern plain. The results of this study indicate that the intensified development density of these building complexes produce unique models of collective living, establishing a rich inventory of intermediary spatial types that inflect the daily and seasonal variations of the temperate Anatolian climate.

summary Biological life manifests in space through a large diversity of physical structures perfectly bind and identifiable in the environment. This reveals that all share a common generative design process which allows them the same physical identity in all the shapes that generates, The human ecological design process used in architecture is not able yet to reach this design identity neither the spontaneous integration associates to it. Why? Because the geometrical design process used in ecological architecture and living structures are not similar. Thus, this paper proposes, through the identification of some geometrical characteristics from the growth mechanism of living structures, a process of shape generation through shape grammar. With this generation process is possible to generate, only in geometrical terms, a large diversity of architectural models with a common identity, that reveals some geometrical characteristics of spatial integration that living structures share with the surround environment.

summary Housing for all is back on the international agenda. The economic crisis forces researchers and architects to rethink the concept of living and adopt more flexible housing design strategies as an alternative to typologies that impose rules of coexistence and do not reflect the social dynamics of a community. The introduction of rules-based housing design strategies allows the implementation of more dynamic processes. This ongoing research is a reflection on the potential of digital tools to develop spatial and formal parameters based on analysis of flexible housing models. This paper presents the initial phase of the research.

summary The intersection of music and architecture (spatial design) has remained a fascination for practitioners and researchers for many years. This paper reports on the development of a Virtual Drumming Environment (VDE) that provides a research and cross-domain performance environment for musico-spatial design research explorations.The VDE is explored as a means of revealing affordances related to the complexities of polyrhythmic drumming through cross-domain representation of MIDI data as polyrhythmic event-time-dynamics molecules (PM) within virtual space. Further to this, we explore the VDE as a cross-domain performance environment where new modes of musico-spatial improvisation are revealed that extend drumming's 'known worlds' (Bruford, 2015).

summary This paper presents a method of configuring architectural space that articulates the coupling of an organism with its environment; expressing the spatiality of unfolding engagement in the world. The premise is that space is a consequence of cohesion, effected through constraints and processes of enaction. An Artificial Life model is presented as an analogue of a bottom-up approach to architectural design that takes into account that we as organisms interact with our ever present changing environment and redefine our spatial domain depending on our sensory interaction with said environment.

summary In this paper, we review and extend the idea of Alexander’s “pattern language”, especially from the viewpoints of complexity theories, information systems, and human-computer interaction, to explore spatial cognition-based design representations for “intelligent and adaptive/interactive environment” in architecture and urban planning. We propose a theoretic framework of design patterns “with spatial information processing”, and attempt to incorporate state-of-the-art computational methods of information visualization/visual analytics into the conventional CAAD approaches. Focused on the spatial-semantic analytics, together with abstract syntactic pattern representation, by using “spatial-semantic aware” graph grammar formalization, i.e., Spatial Graph Grammars (SGG), the relevant models, algorithms and tool are proposed. We testify our theoretic framework and computational tool VEGGIE (a Visual Environment of Graph Grammar Induction Engineering) by using actual architectural design works (spatial layout exemplars of a small office building and the three house projects by Frank Lloyd Wright) as study cases, so as to demonstrate our proposed approach for practical applications. The results are discussed and further research is suggested.

summary Modular Light Cloud is an installation that is conceived to explore the boundaries of architecture and art. Its interactivity is a metaphor of mutual influences that derive from activities performed in space - associated with motion, sound and light.It is an experimental project focused on the integration of architectural elements, structure, information technology, performing arts, electronics and digital fabrication in architectural education.The project was completed in a two-week student workshop in collaboration with a contemporary dance artist. The students were taught the basics of parametric design, programming of electronic components and digital fabrication during tutorial classes. The making process combined three stages of development: design, construction and programming of interaction.The final form consists of two irregular spatial trusses made of aluminum profiles connected with 3d printed nodes. The profiles are equipped with LED strips and electronic components: light sensors, sound and communication between them. These systems control the intensity of light emitted by the diodes based on the inputs.The result is a working prototype presented as interactive installation featuring contemporary dance artist. It was displayed at art festivals and other events.

An iterative workflow is also a desirable behaviour in the design studio of architecture students allowing for a greater understanding of parameters embedded within the design and ultimately leading to better learning outcomes. This paper discusses the potential of Real Time Strategy Games and draws connections between successful player attributes found specifically in Tower Defence Games and how these could be used to introduce skills required in the planning of architectural space.

summary Crowd Mapper is a projection-based, low-cost spatial design tool that can visualize possible pedestrian crowd behaviors associated with spatial configurations that are interactively updated by users. The method utilizes efficient representation of 2-D silhouette-based figures using agent-based computation, developed by the first author, and allows real-time editing of building designs by multiple users. The use of projection mapping technology allows architects to project multiple design schemes with three-dimensional depth and qualities. While this method still conforms to the familiar framework of architectural production standards utilizing traditional white massing models, the method has a potential to improve the existing work flow and stimulate the creativity of architects by its real-time editing capabilities.
