summary Montevideo has a new visitor. In the heritage building of the german architect Karl Trambauer, located in the Old City, a new presence was installed filling the vacuum left by its former collapsed dome, seeking to restore a message, adding a new vision and recovering the lost dialogue between the architecture, the city and its inhabitants. This paper summarizes and explains the experience of the workshop Adaptation 2015, held on September 2015 at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Exposing the theoretical framework, design strategies, morphogenetic development, digital manufacturing experimentations, conclusions and open questions from the experience made. We will go through this temporary intervention on Trambauer’s building, being a rare but symbiotic object, with parametric genes, digital and handcrafted manufacture, and also looking for the impact of theory and academic practices in the city.

summary Developments in computational design methods and their integration with digital fabrication processes are ushering a customized fabrication paradigm. This paradigm is particularly suited to renovation of old buildings built with traditional construction techniques, a diversified corpus in which interventions are surgical and unique, and where partition walls play the central role. Insulation Cork Board and OSB, natural and renewable materials, can have an important role in a material system that responds to this context. Cork re-Wall is a parametrically modelled construction system and a file-to-factory digital process to generate high quality custom solutions to respond to diverse renovation design challenges.

summary The approach of contemporary architecture with urban environment has always been in perpetual evolution. The path between concept and real building has been driven since ancient times by traditional drawing tools which discretized the architect ideas into shapes. The cases studied for morphogenesis evolution, featured in the top-notch architectural firms, have been framed into two different strategies. In the first family the shape is created by the modifications of several distinct geometrical elements, which create formal complexity. In the second family of buildings the complexity is the result of very few geometrical elements, whose morphogenetic process generates complex forms. As the geometrical elements decrease in number, the draft shape must undergo a deeper process of modification to solve the functional, sustainability and structural issues.

summary The article develops a reflection on the different stages of information (data) in the relations of mediation between ‘individual interpreter’ and ‘information systems’, and the agency of the processes of perception, interpretation and clarification. The goal was to identify, understand and describe how ‘information systems’ enact the different stages of articulation of ‘information’, from “propensity” to ‘concatenation’, and from ‘critical’ to the ‘action’. Tests and analysis of the effects of ‘information systems’ were observed in ‘narrative accounts’ of ‘individual interpreter’. However, the conclusion is that the social conformation of ‘strategies for obtaining information’ prevails on the properties of ‘information system’.

summary The research presents an architectural method and model that organise material composites into weather-powered response building envelopes. The work is done through a set of simulation strategies including simulation of thermal sensation, simulation of material behaviours of a developed dynamic architectural envelope based on bi-material deflection and simulation of a design process based on evolutionary computation. The work finds that the proposed method and model can create dynamic expressive and environment-oriented functional building envelopes. The approach allow time-based articulation and making of architectures that respond to the thermal environment, thereby creating a basis for developing buildings that are intimately linked to dynamic environmental and human occupancy patterns.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary Housing for all is back on the international agenda. The economic crisis forces researchers and architects to rethink the concept of living and adopt more flexible housing design strategies as an alternative to typologies that impose rules of coexistence and do not reflect the social dynamics of a community. The introduction of rules-based housing design strategies allows the implementation of more dynamic processes. This ongoing research is a reflection on the potential of digital tools to develop spatial and formal parameters based on analysis of flexible housing models. This paper presents the initial phase of the research.

summary In 2015, an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude displaced over 6.6 million people in Kathmandu, Nepal. Three years later, the country continues in its struggle to rebuild its capital. The aim of this study is to investigate a construction system, produced from locally sourced materials, that can aggregate and deploy as self-built, habitable infrastructure. The study focused on the relationship between material resonance, earthquake resistant structures, and fabrication strategies. An agent-based form-finding algorithm was developed using knowledge acquired through physical prototyping of mycelium-based composites to generate earthquake resistant geometries, optimize material usage, and enhance spatial performance. The results show compelling evidence for a construction methodology to design and construct a 3-4 story building that holds a higher degree of resistance to earthquakes. The scope of work contributes to advancements in bioengineering, confirming easy-to-grow, light-weight mycelium-composites as viable structural materials for construction.

summary The construction and building sector is now widely known to be one of the biggest energy consumers, carbon emitters, and creators of waste. Some architectural agendas for sustainability focus on energy efficiency of buildings that minimize their energy intake during their lifetime - through the use of more efficient mechanical systems or more insulative wall systems. One issue with these sustainability models is that they often ignore the hierarchy of energy within architectural design. The focus on the efficiency is but one aspect or system of the building assembly, when compared to the effectiveness of the whole, which often leads to ad-hoc ecology and results in the all too familiar “law of unintended consequences” (Merton, 1936). As soon as adhesive is used to connect two materials, a piece of trash is created. If designers treat material as energy, and want to use energy responsibly, they can prolong the lifetime of building material by designing for disassembly. By changing the nature of the physical relationship between materials, buildings can be reconfigured and repurposed all the while keeping materials out of a landfill. The use of smart joinery to create building assemblies which can be disassembled, has a milieu of new possibilities created through the use of digital manufacturing equipment. These tools afford designers and manufacturers the ability to create individual joints of a variety of types, which perform as well or better than conventional systems. The concept of design for disassembly is a recognizable goal of industrial design and manufacturing, but for Architecture it remains a novel approach. A classic example is Kieran Timberlake's Loblolly House, which employed material assemblies “that are detailed for on-site assembly as well as future disassembly and redeployment” (Flat, Inc, 2008). The use of nearly ubiquitous digital manufacturing tools helps designers create highly functional, precise and effective methods of connection which afford a building to be taken apart and reused or reassembled into alternative configurations or for alternative uses. This paper will survey alternative energy strategies made available through joinery using digital manufacturing and design methods, and will evaluate these strategies in their ability to create diassemblable materials which therefore use less energy - or minimize the entropy of energy over the life-cycle of the material.

title A Computational Design Framework Supporting Human Interaction with Environmentally-Responsive Building Envelopes

summary Emerging materials present opportunities to fundamentally shift current expectations of dynamic building envelope functionality towards systems that can respond to occupant needs while meeting the energy demands of buildings. In order to assess the environmental, social, and architectural opportunities that are increasing with responsive building envelopes, new tools are needed to simulate their multi-performance capabilities. This paper describes a computational design framework to support human interaction with environmentally-responsive electroactive dynamic daylighting systems. The objective is to develop algorithms for variable solar control and visible transmittance that simultaneously address occupant preferences for visual effects and interaction. Results demonstrate that energy performance and user satisfaction are not mutually exclusive and can be co-optimized. The effectiveness and limitations of the computational framework in assessing strategies to balance environmental performance and human interaction are discussed. Conclusions present areas of ongoing work that integrate multi-user interactions and immersive visualization techniques with multiscalar energy modeling tools.

summary One of the most important natural resources for the urban sustainability is water. For this reason, the incorporation of appropriate strategies to manage water resources from buildings and urban planning is necessary. In this work a series of parametric criteria are defined, with which by using design software it proposed generating optimal forms in certain scenarios for high hydric performance in urban residential complexes. The examples developed demonstrates strong influences of dwelling density by the construction block and permeable outdoor surfaces, as well as local infrastructure for water recovering.

The purpose of this research is to understand and explore the dialogue between shape and performance with generative strategies. The method was based on the works by Oxman (2010), Olgyay (2015), and Di Mari & Yoo (2012), by means that relate the form to performance issues. The thermal performance data found to result from the relationship between thermal conditions, the shape of the envelope, and the characteristics of the eight Brazilian bioclimatic zones.

summary Architecture is an area of study in which design solution visualization is essential. It is during the design phase that the projective doubts are clarified. Augmented Reality (AR) enables the visualization of virtual elements in the real environment. In this paper, visualization strategies will be presented in Augmented Reality for the discussion of alternatives design solution in architecture. These strategies are presented in an experiment in which perceptions of users are observed through a workshop. We compare two display strategies (AR mobile x AR projected) in four types of representation. As a contribution, we present a critical analysis of the benefits and limitations of the strategies used.

summary This article searches for a broader conceptual definition of what heritage is and might mean in today's urban society, drawing from the fascinating but disregarded quarter of Hay Mohammadi, in the outskirts of Casablanca, Morocco. On the one hand, we explore how current heritage actors and strategies maintain a somewhat odd distance between the quarters' immaterial heritage (stories, histories and memories) and material heritage (spaces, buildings and objects). On the other hand, the strong emphasis on the presence of French colonial architecture by different heritage actors does not match the way inhabitants perceive the quarter. By bringing both perceived oppositions together, we develop the quarter -conceptually and practically- as a testing field for a new definition of heritage, that argues for 'operative memories': a far more active, engaging and future-oriented comprehension of what heritage is and might be.

summary This paper aims to discuss different possibilities and methodologies within the field of urban acoustics and the use of digital tools. As an attempt to integrate quantitative methods, such as sound mapping and noise control, with qualitative approaches, such as the soundscape studies, new strategies based on performance oriented design will be addressed. The notion of sonic effect as an important tool for integrating different perspectives will hence be discussed as a possible instrument for structuring generative design experiments. A theoretical framework and a possible design workflow are further drawn to possibly articulate future studies.

summary The paper presents an educational method used in teaching design of high-rise buildings in the city center. The author outlines the processes developed by students, the tools they used and the final results of design studio project and the supporting seminar, focused on exploring information processes in design. For the purpose of the design studio the students developed their own generative strategies that allowed incorporating optimization procedures into the design process. Within the framework of the seminar classes students developed individual optimization tools with the use of genetic algorithms in order to explore the search space and select the best possible architectural solutions for the specified criteria. The students used the above-mentioned tools mostly during the building's form-finding design stage or attempted to optimize just the building structure.

summary Thermal Form, is architecture that does work. Or, it is the application of energy as information to architectural geometry, with the express purpose of using the resistance of structure against an opposing thermodynamic force, in order to manipulate and direct flows that exist in both the interior and along the exterior of a building. By examining the relationship between surface configuration, surface area and type of energy transfer occurring - with a focus on the mechanism of transfer - thermal form strategies can be used to further optimize existing building typologies and environmental control system strategies, or, perform a more radical detouring of the atmosphere of a building.

summary This paper presents an experiment on an open source construction system named Woka, which allows anyone to design and produce dwellings using standard CNC techniques. Woka was developed as a dialogical design process that empowers self-builders to act in a more autonomous way, expanding the traditional role of design practice and the way buildings are created. The advent and popularization of new design and fabrication processes have encouraged a flux of new theories and project strategies based on computing, each with its promise of changing the architectural practice. Some of these resulted in intellectually seductive; visually provocative and complex shaped architectures, generating a new formal repertoire, but doesn’t indicate a paradigm shift in the process of production of architectural space, still based on authorship. Woka challenges this traditional process proposing dialogue as a design approach, shifting the focus from the object to intersubjectivity, amplifying the potential for novelty to arise.

summary Decisions taken at early stages of building design have a significant effect on the planning steps for the entire lifetime of the project as well as the performance of the building throughout its lifecycle (MacLeamy 2004). Building Information Modelling (BIM) could bring forward and enhance the planning and decision-making processes by enabling the direct reuse of data hold by the model for diverse analysis and simulation tasks (Borrmann et al. 2015). The architect today besides a couple of simplified simulation tools almost exclusively uses his know-how for evaluating and comparing design variants in the early stages of design. This paper focuses on finding new ways to facilitate the use of analytical and simulation tools during the important early phases of conceptual building design, where the models are partially incomplete. The necessary enrichment and proper detailing of the design model could be achieved by means of dialogue-based interaction concepts with analytical and simulation tools through adaptive detailing strategies. This concept is explained using an example scenario for design process. A generic description of the aimed dialog-based interface to various simulation tools will also be discussed in this paper using an example scenario.
