summary This paper describes a novel method for determining the capacity to generate solar energy integrated into the roofs of buildings by aerial survey using UAVs and BIM models for sizing the covering surfaces and integration of solar panels. Various digital procedures are enchained like planning of trajectories, image processing, geometric reconstitution, simulation of solar radiation and calculation of energy generation to promote on-site installation of clean energy sources in existing buildings, to ensure a more sustainable habitat.

summary This chapter provides a panorama of the current state of computationally controlled dynamic facades through a literature review and a survey of contemporary projects. This was completed with an underlying interest in understanding how innovative design solutions with the capacity to ‘react to’ and/or ‘interact with’ the varying states of climatic conditions have been developed. An analysis of these projects was conducted, and led to the identification of tendencies, which were subsequently synthesized and articulated. While most classifications are limited to describing the movement or structure needed to achieve morphological transformation, an important recommendation is to also consider control as a determining factor. For this reason, the culmination of the investigation presented here is a proposal for a classification structure of dynamic facades, developed according to the functional modus operandi of each structure in terms of movement and control.

summary Since 1985 the Computer-Aided Architectural Design Futures Foundation has fostered high level discussions about the search for excellence in the built environment through the use of new technologies with an exploratory and critical perspective. In 2015, the 16th CAAD Futures Conference was held, for the first time, in South America, in the lively megalopolis of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In order to establish a connection to local issues, the theme of the conference was "The next city". The city of Sao Paulo was torn down and almost completely rebuilt twice, from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s, evolving from a city built in rammed-earth to a city built in bricks and then from a city built in bricks to a city built in concrete. In the 21st century, with the widespread use of digital technologies both in the design and production of buildings, cities are changing even faster, in terms of layout, materials, shapes, textures, production methods and, above all, in terms of the information that is now embedded in built systems.Among the 200 abstracts received in the first phase, 64 were selected for presentation in the conference and publication in the Electronic Proceedings, either as long or short papers, after 3 tough evaluation stages. Each paper was reviewed by at least three different experts from an international committee of more than 80 highly experienced researchers. The authors come from 23 different countries. Among all papers, 10 come from Latin-American institutions, which have been usually under-represented in CAAD Futures. The 33 highest rated long papers are also being published in a printed book by Springer. For this reason, only their abstracts were included in this Electronic Proceedings, at the end of each chapter.The papers in this book have been organized under the following topics: (1) modeling, analyzing and simulating the city, (2) sustainability and performance of the built environment, (3) automated and parametric design, (4) building information modeling (BIM), (5) fabrication and materiality, and (6) shape studies. The first topic includes papers describing different uses of computation applied to the study of the urban environment. The second one represents one of the most important current issues in the study and design of the built environment. The third topic, automated and parametric design, is an established field of research that is finally becoming more available to practitioners. Fabrication has been a hot topic in CAAD conferences, and is becoming ever more popular. This new way of making design and buildings will soon start affecting the way cities look like. Finally, shape studies are an established and respected field in design computing that is traditionally discussed in CAAD conferences.

summary Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are currently making a dynamic appearance in the architectural realm. Social media are being bombarded by word-to-image/image-to-image generated illustrations of fictive buildings generated by tools such as ‘Midjourney’, ‘DALL-E’, ‘Stable Diffusion’ and others. Architects appear to be fascinated by the rapidly generated and inspiring ‘designs’ while others criticise them as superficial and formalistic. In continuation to previous research on Generative Design, (Agkathidis, 2015), this paper aims to investigate whether there is an appropriate way to integrate these new technologies as a generative tool in the educational architectural design process. To answer this question, we developed a design workflow consisting of four phases and tested it for two semesters in an architectural design studio in parallel to other studio units using conventional design methods but working on the same site. The studio outputs were evaluated by guest critics, moderators and external examiners. Furthermore, the design framework was evaluated by the students through an anonymous survey. Our findings highlight the advantages and challenges of the utilisation of AI image synthesis tools in the educational design process of an architectural design approach.

summary The monastic settlement of Aynali is located in Cappadocia, a short distance from the Open Air Museum in Goreme. The church and the monastery follow approximated geometrical rules and, despite the efforts and expectations by traditional scholars, they are rarely comparable to simple geometric shapes. Survey and representations after digital photogrammetry offer the actual form of the rock-cut rooms and may contribute to reconstruct the missing parts of the structure as well as to update a critical knowledge to rupestrian habitat.

summary For several years great effort has been devoted to the study of Architectural Design Optimization (ADO). However, although in the recent years ADO has attracted much attention from academia, optimization methods and tools have had a limited influence on the architectural profession. The aim of the study is to reveal users' expectations from the optimization tools and define limitations preventing wide-spread adaptation of the optimization solvers in the architectural practice. The paper presents the results of the survey "Optimization in the architectural practice" conducted between December 2015 and February 2016 on 165 architectural trainees and practising architects from 34 countries. The results show that there is a need for an interactive multi-objective optimization tool, as 78% respondents declared that a multi-objective optimization is more necessary in their practice than a single objective one and 91% of them acknowledged the need for choice of promising solutions during optimization process. Finally, it has been found that daylight, structure and geometry are three top factors which architects are interested in optimizing.

summary 3D laser scanner is an instrument that employs LiDAR technology to map out objects in space by means of remote detection. In Architecture, digital mapping through 3D laser scanning mainly aims at creating digital surface models based on instant recordings of still objects, whereas lived spaces such as squares, streets, and urban surroundings presuppose the presence of people on the move. This paper presents some preliminary results of an investigation on the use of 3D laser scanning in urban contexts. It seeks to examine experimental data on moving people obtained in point clouds and discuss their operationalization possibilities and limitations. The main goal of this investigation is to assess the potential of this technology for use as a research tool and in city-scale design processes.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary The construction and building sector is now widely known to be one of the biggest energy consumers, carbon emitters, and creators of waste. Some architectural agendas for sustainability focus on energy efficiency of buildings that minimize their energy intake during their lifetime - through the use of more efficient mechanical systems or more insulative wall systems. One issue with these sustainability models is that they often ignore the hierarchy of energy within architectural design. The focus on the efficiency is but one aspect or system of the building assembly, when compared to the effectiveness of the whole, which often leads to ad-hoc ecology and results in the all too familiar “law of unintended consequences” (Merton, 1936). As soon as adhesive is used to connect two materials, a piece of trash is created. If designers treat material as energy, and want to use energy responsibly, they can prolong the lifetime of building material by designing for disassembly. By changing the nature of the physical relationship between materials, buildings can be reconfigured and repurposed all the while keeping materials out of a landfill. The use of smart joinery to create building assemblies which can be disassembled, has a milieu of new possibilities created through the use of digital manufacturing equipment. These tools afford designers and manufacturers the ability to create individual joints of a variety of types, which perform as well or better than conventional systems. The concept of design for disassembly is a recognizable goal of industrial design and manufacturing, but for Architecture it remains a novel approach. A classic example is Kieran Timberlake's Loblolly House, which employed material assemblies “that are detailed for on-site assembly as well as future disassembly and redeployment” (Flat, Inc, 2008). The use of nearly ubiquitous digital manufacturing tools helps designers create highly functional, precise and effective methods of connection which afford a building to be taken apart and reused or reassembled into alternative configurations or for alternative uses. This paper will survey alternative energy strategies made available through joinery using digital manufacturing and design methods, and will evaluate these strategies in their ability to create diassemblable materials which therefore use less energy - or minimize the entropy of energy over the life-cycle of the material.

summary For nearly thirty years, the digital phenomenon has integrated many disciplines. Those involved in image processing and analysis took advantage of this major technological breakthrough to revisit the tools and methods of their discipline. In this context, the architectural field, and more specifically the one of heritage analysis and documentation, have greatly benefited from the development of acquisition and visualization techniques. Today, it is no longer unusual to document a building with millions of three-dimensional spatial coordinates. Nevertheless, until the last century, documentation by drawing corresponded to a work of reverse engineering in which it belonged to the architect to understand the object and to represent its key feature. Today, 3D data acquisition technology promotes an increasingly “figurative” representation of architecture. In this paper, we consider some epistemological avenues for the integration of those new approaches to the requirements of architectural representation.

summary Public open spaces (parks, squares and other gathering places) can only be grasped from a simultaneous view of their attributes. In an ongoing Phd research project we propose to overcome the limitations of traditional-descriptive urban morphology methods in dealing with this simultaneity derived from their many shapes, functions, uses and relations within the urban structure. After developing the relations between formal attributes and intangible spatial properties, their identity and proximity may be disclosed by multivariate statistical analysis and data mining techniques. We outline a multidimensional method for the synchronic analysis and classification of the public open spaces departing from a research corpus of 126 Portuguese urban squares, whose analysis is intended to interactively (re)define it. The work done so far is presented, which comprises: (i) firming the concepts, criteria and attributes to extract; (ii) survey on theories, methods and spatial analysis tools and shortcomings identification; (iii) adaptation and/or creation of new methods and tools; (iv) creation of databases from CAD and GIS environments; (v) research on multivariate analysis, data mining and data visualization techniques.

summary This paper addresses an issue that has been omnipresent in the history of CAAD research: the tension between scientific method and the design discipline in which it operates. Outside the CAAD community, research through design is been undertaken by a new generation. Through a discussion of research methodologies, a survey of CAAD activity and the examination of design projects, it is proposed that this provides a valuable opportunity to redress the balance between scientific and designerly modes of research and in so doing engage with a new generation of design computing researchers.

summary Despite the effort of Korean government to vitalize BIM adoption in AEC industry, the domestic adoption of BIM is still in its initial step. Particular in design field where medium and small firms being the majority, shows lower level of BIM adoption. The primary reason for this can be considered as lacking of necessities caused by uncertain benefits of BIM. Therefore, it is time to develop the objectives, quantifiable and qualitative measurement system of BIM performances. The purpose of this study is to suggest the BIM Performance Measurement System for architectural design firms. In achieving this, the authors have developed Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and validated its appropriateness by questionnaire survey with experts and performing statistical analysis. This development can be contributed to the voluntary BIM adoption by visualizing the detailed benefit of BIM and to the improvement of enterprise competitiveness by facilitating management of design process and estimating future outcome.

summary Mass customization, which may lead to greater variety of architectural solutions, seems to be a concept mostly unknown and difficult to grasp or hard to believe by many. We argue in this paper that education may have a rule to play in bringing about a better understanding of these among students and professionals. We show here the results of a survey on people’s beliefs about mass standardization and mass customization and a comparative study of students’ design projects produced under a certain pedagogical strategy and how these might be influenced by their education.

summary The present paper is a mapping study of digital fabrication laboratories in Latin America. It presents and discusses results from a survey with 31 universities’ fab labs, studios and independent initiatives in Latin America. The objective of this study is fourfold: firstly, to draw the cultural, social and economic context of implementation of digital fabrication laboratories in the region; secondly, to synthesize relevant data from correlations between organizational structures, facilities and technologies, activities, types of prototypes, uses and areas of application; thirdly, to draw a network of people and institutions, recovering connections and the genealogy of these fab labs; and fourthly, to present some fab labs that are intertwined with local questions. The results obtained indicate a complex “homo faber” network of initiatives that embraces academic investigations, architectural developments, industry applications, artistic propositions and actions in social processes.

summary The discourse to mould Building Information Modelling (BIM) into the early architecture education has been escalated in many scholar papers and discussions. Scenarios are made to obtain optimum educational deliverance. However, the response from students’ perspective to the outlined subject has not been reviewed in terms of their competences, especially in Indonesian higher education where architectural computing education is relatively new. After BIM is delivered in two semesters span in the early stage at Bina Nusantara University, Faculty of Engineering, Architecture Department, survey is conducted to depict their understanding. This article is the feedback report, which shows that the students were self-convinced to the potential of BIM and its future. In achieving that particular level, the combination of various delivery methods is the utmost strategy to accompany the design studio with BIM.

summary New construction within existing buildings requires documentation of the existing buildings, in a form that one is familiar with from new construction or architectural design. Laser scanning is a powerful tool to survey the built reality. It provides a replica of the existing building in the form of a point cloud. The difficulty is to analyse the resulting amounts of data that has been generated and being able to interpret it as a Building Information Model (BIM). This article proposes a new generic approach for pattern recognition of architectural objects. The procedure is introduced through the use of two examples - polygon fitting, which is important for the generation of new building element classes and wall detection. The second part describes how individual components can be automatically connected to consistent networks. BIM systems walls should be aligned, within predefined limits of accuracy, either perpendicular to or in line with each other.

summary Architectural survey is an evolving field in architecture that has been affected during the past decades by the technological advancements in the field of 3D data acquisition. Data acquired from laser scanning and photogrammetry, for the purposes of documentation can be integrated in the BIM data base of the project and contribute as the first stage in the sustainable process of building reuse and retrofit and for an appropriate design intervention for a building under preservation. This paper presents the case study of the documentation and design intervention of a building under preservation in Ramat Gan, Israel. All phases of the design process were integrated into a comprehensive BIM data base: the digital documentation of the building, through laser scanning and photogrammetry, the architectural geometry, the structural information, the HVAC and electrical planning. This case-study demonstrates how the compilation of the various phases in a BIM database facilitated a smooth workflow in a complicated project under preservation, allowed for an immediate coordination between the various consultants and resulted in a non-invasive design intervention.
