summary The Processing language was created to teach programming to the design, architecture, and electronic arts communities. Despite its success, Processing has limited applicability in the architectural realm, as no CAD (Computer-Aided Design) or BIM (Building Information Modeling) application supports Processing. As a result, architects that have learnt Processing are unable to use the language in the context of modern, script-based, architectural work. This work joins Processing with the world of CAD or BIM applications, creating a solution that allows architects to prototype new designs using Processing and generate results in a CAD or BIM application. To achieve this, we developed an implementation of Processing for the Rosetta programming environment, allowing Processing scripts to generate 2D and 3D models in a variety of CAD or BIM applications, such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros3D, SketchUp, and Revit.

summary The paper aims to relate a specific aspect of the proposed methodology for digital design, presented on the PhD research called Cibersemiótica e Processos de Projeto: Metodologia em Revis?o, developed at the University of S?o Paulo (USP), with the didactic experience conducted at the subject Representaç?o e Criaç?o Digital 2, developed at the Architecture and Urbanism Course of the Federal University of Campo Grande (UFMS), Brazil. The paper’s theoretical foundation is based on the cybersemiotic work produced by the Danish philosopher S?ren Brier, which unifies two important conceptual frameworks: the Charles Sanders Peirce’s Semiotics, and the Second Order Cybernetics proposed by Heinz von Foerster.

summary This article explains parametric, fabrication and teaching strategies used during a workshop for constructing a full scale, self supporting, vault metal structure realized with parametric manufacturing methods. The key aim is to construct a small size, easy assembled and transportable pavilion, while focusing on new design and construction methods of a façade system in which the structure, joint and skin will integrate functions in a unifying structural system. For the investigation, we explore materials commonly used in façade industry, such as aluminum profiles and aluminium composite panels (ACP).

summary This paper explains how parametric methods are informed by simulation and prototyping, methods that were deployed during some series of digital fabrication workshops, their evolution and specifically with the objective of fabricating using combination of materials and CNC techniques, such as, 3d printing, laser cutting and milling machine. Teaching these workshops were the results of simulating and prototyping with students from the Biodigital Master (ESARQ UIC 2016) and a workshop done during Sigradi (Florianopolis 2015).

summary The following paper describes the process and results achieved with the workshop entitled ‘Re-inventing Portuguese ceramic tiles’ reflecting on design methodology and design teaching. Workshop participants were invited to rethink ceramic tile patterns developing a different process which used shape grammars as a generative system. Each participant group developed a three stage task using shape grammars principles and methodology. The preliminary results the work developed are of particular relevance in shape grammar research: firstly shape grammar formulae does not constitute an intuitive process to most creative designers which are often trained to design singular solutions for a specific problem, secondly more than one operative shape grammar can be formulated to represent the same corpus of solutions and lastly the generative potential of grammars transcends the normal capacities of the original grammarist aiding in design exploration and enlarging the corpus of feasible solutions. This paper also reflects on the impact of shape grammars as a design methodology.

summary This paper looks at photographic documentation as a resource for detecting errors, identifying possible design principles and providing guidance for the development of student projects in the course AUP2418 – Three Dimensional Models of the undergraduate curriculum at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Studies at USP in S?o Paulo, Brazil. This article deals with teaching industrial design models and describes the methodological basis adopted. It also offers examples and analyzes the construction and use of models in order to demonstrate the relevance of photographic documentation during the design process.

title From representational to parametric and algorithmic interactions: A panorama of Digital Architectural Design teaching in Latin America

summary This study focuses on the context of graphic representation technologies and digital design on Architectural teaching in Latin America. From categories proposed by Oxman and Kotnik and through a mapping study framed by a systematic review in CumInCAD database, it is presented a panorama of the state-of-art of the digital design on Architectural teaching in the region, between 2006 and 2015. The results suggest a context of coexistence of representational interaction and parametric interaction, as well as a transition from one to another and the emergence of the first experiments in algorithmic interaction. As this mapping shows an ongoing movement toward Digital Architectural Design in Latin America in the last decade, and points out its dynamics in space in time, it could contribute to strengthen a crowdthinking network on this issue in the region and with other continents.

summary What kind of tools do landscape architects need to inform their designs with the abundance of knowledge available to us in Open Access data - in the era of 'Big Data'? Although the majority of landscape architects already integrate GIS data in their work, it is often only for analysis purposes and also only with data already integrated in their own country's GIS system. Without further processing, the graphic output formats often cannot reach a state that can be readily integrated into the design process. Students often have a negative stance towards GIS and the software programs associated with it especially within teaching. For the past three years, we at the Chair for Landscape Architecture of Professor Girot (ETH Zurich) have been researching at the potential for students to gain an understanding of the validity of site-specific data by creating coded programs that interactively integrate this information as parameters in the next step of the design process. The key to the entire processing chain is the use of an explorative approach to understanding data as the basis for making decisions.

summary A common problem we share teachers today is the presence of smartphones and tablets in the classroom; these electronic devices generate distractions of its use for communication in social networks, games, and visits to Internet sites. These elements are at all times available to the student, which is why we raised the need to adapt some learning processes with their interaction. The intention is to demonstrate that these practices allow for the introduction of theoretical concepts and fundamentals related academic imagination, the design process and representation of the architectural project. The proposal linked with an increase of the professional needs that the architect faces, after their training, professional skills to perform in today’s job market.

summary We analyse the problem of creating didactic material for teaching and evaluating mathematics in the first year of a School of Architecture. By using visual programming, science professor used codes (formulae) to represent in a software their proposals, instead of drawing them themselves. Through this experience we create a database of codes with computational solutions that allows faculty to modify, reuse, visualise and print in the same platform that she students will use while developing their designs. In this way we aim to maximise the link between mathematics and design as fundamental base for the control of complex shapes.

summary Extended Reality (XR) technologies have the potential to help and improve the teaching and design process in Architecture and Urbanism, as they offer different ways of perceiving and representing space and various functionalities. Therefore, it is important to systematize scientific production in this area. This research aims to identify and analyze the main applications of XR in teaching and in the design process in Architecture and Urbanism, as well as its benefits and limitations. A systematic literature review of publications on CumInCAD and SBTIC, from 2015 to 2022, was carried out. The results show the growing emphasis of XR as a medium that offers benefits both for teaching and design practice. However, there are still limitations to be overcome to make XR more inclusive. As a contribution, a greater understanding of how XR has been applied in teaching is provided along with a reflection on its impact on the means of representation in the design process.

summary This article discusses some methodologies in art education in schools and educational activities in museums. It focuses on accessibility and in the visually impaired rights to access and improve the experiences and repertoire in artistic languages, recognizing the use of new technologies in the field of digital manufacturing as valuable resources for the production of teaching materials with the use of cheaper and accessible technology, which expands the access to cultural institutions and education. Considering that most of the museums art works are not to be touched, 3D printing reproductions in durable low cost plastic present as an alternative for tactile experience. In addition, the photogrammetric 3D scanning process and digital editing allow for the creation of isolated parts and materials originated from the art piece, broadening the pedagogical possibilities of art educators. The production of didactic material for arts teaching, with the use of 3D printed copies (edited or not) originated from 3D scans, may help revealing a more subtle and sophisticated aspect of artistic narrative to the public and the visually impaired.

summary While learning computer-aided modeling techniques, students of architecture should not only gain knowledge on how to model three-dimensional forms, but also how to define and understand the information beneath the shapes. Architectural presentation as an intellectual communication-focused process requires new media to channel information in a contemporary way. These can be text, image, sound, video or a digital model. The integration of augmented reality in teaching computer-aided modeling in architecture school provides more thorough learning experience as it opens new opportunities. The authors present the process of implementing AR technology in architectural education - its theoretical background, the outcome of students' work and technical solutions. They argue that the use of AR interface increases the effectiveness of user-model interaction in comparison to standard mouse-based techniques of three-dimensional manipulation due to the intuitive touch-screen interaction and direct control on the camera.

summary This paper deals with the research of the building shape in a constant and dialectical relationship with thermal performance. The purpose of this research is to understand and explore the dialogue between shape and performance with generative strategies. The method was based on the works by Oxman (2010), Olgyay (2015), and Di Mari & Yoo (2012), by means that relate the form to performance issues. The thermal performance data found to result from the relationship between thermal conditions, the shape of the envelope, and the characteristics of the eight Brazilian bioclimatic zones.

As project cycles begin to accelerate, a variety of design decisions need to be taken swiftly and nevertheless accurately. Today's practice needs to explore the solution space through a rapid feedback loop between digital and physical products, used collaboratively and over a distance. To facilitate such a back-and-forth, geometries must be converted to manageable approximations on which intelligent tools can act, providing the designer with feedback and advice. This year's conference seeks to be a platform for research, teaching and practical work conducted in that spirit. The second volume of the proceedings contains 74 papers grouped under 15 sub-themes, which generally follow a more designernly and educational logic than the works in volume 1 (which follow a more formal approach). As additional part, we have our preceding workshop contributions, which are papers summarizing the workshops given.

summary The paper presents an educational method used in teaching design of high-rise buildings in the city center. The author outlines the processes developed by students, the tools they used and the final results of design studio project and the supporting seminar, focused on exploring information processes in design. For the purpose of the design studio the students developed their own generative strategies that allowed incorporating optimization procedures into the design process. Within the framework of the seminar classes students developed individual optimization tools with the use of genetic algorithms in order to explore the search space and select the best possible architectural solutions for the specified criteria. The students used the above-mentioned tools mostly during the building's form-finding design stage or attempted to optimize just the building structure.

summary In the last decade, architectural researchers have demonstrated the potential of using robots to design and construct in novel ways. However, the integration of such practices in architectural education has been difficult and the examples are rare. By analyzing this context, this paper describes a teaching experience at FAUP where robotic technologies were introduced to the Master students for the first time. The assignment consisted in the production of a brick structure and ended up with the construction of a 1:1 scale installation. With this experience, this paper wants to contribute for the dissemination of robotic technologies in architectural curriculums.
