summary In the past three years, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have become an important new way for universities to reach out to possible matriculates, life long learners and alumni. Although MOOCs already cover a vast amount of subjects and curricula, it is remarkable to ascertain the lack of Architectural Design courses on the main platforms like edX and Coursera. Online courses do cover design aspects, e.g. about styles and building materials, but 'design as activity' is an exceptional subject in the portfolio of available MOOCs. In contrast, the CAAD community was one of the first to develop Virtual Design Studio's (VDS) and experimental predecessors of MOOC platforms, such as the AVOCAAD course database system (Af Klercker et al. 2001). Yet, the query 'MOOC' still does not ring a bell in the CUMINCAD publication database (per May 2015). In this paper I will explore a palette of design education settings, in order to find a fit to what a MOOC platform can offer. I will compare the 'MOOC-ability' of Design Education to chances in Virtual Design Studio's and developments in ubiquitous mobile platforms.

summary The current study explored different spatial training methods and investigated the sequence of processed-based mental simulation that was facilitated by various structures of external spatial representations, including 3D technology in Computer Aided-Architectural Design (CAAD), spatial cues, and/or technical languages. The goal was to better understand how these components fostered planning experiences and affected spatial ability acquisition framed as the formation of spatial mental models, for further developing spatial training environments fundamental to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, specifically for architecture education and cognition. Two experiments were conducted using a between-subjects design to examine the effects of spatial training methods on spatial ability performance. Across both studies learners improved in their spatial skills, specifically the learners in the 3D-augmented virtual environments over the 3D-direct physical manipulation conditions. This study is built upon the work in the fields of computer-user interface, visuospatial thinking and human learning.

summary This paper reports on the process and outcomes of a digital design studio that integrates parametric design and generative systems in architectural and urban design projects. It explores the interrelationship between the emergence of innovative formal representations using parametric design systems on the one hand, and design autonomy; more specifically the conscious process of generating and developing an architectural concept, on the other. Groups of undergraduate students working on an architectural project are asked to identify a specific conceptual parti that addresses an aspect of architectural quality, define strategies that satisfy those aspects, and computational methodologies to implement those strategies, such as rule-based systems, self-organization systems, and genetic algorithms. The paper describes the educational approach and studio outcomes, discusses implications for CAAD education and curricula, and addresses issues to be considered for parametric and generative software development.

summary Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technologies including computer numerically controlled (CNC) milling, laser cutting and 3D printing are becoming cheaper and globally more accessible. Accordingly, many design professionals, academics and students have been able to experience the benefits and challenges of using digital fabrication in their designs. The use of digital fabrication in the education of architecture students has become normal in many schools of architecture, and there is a growing demand for computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) logic and fabrication knowledge in student learning. Clearly, architecture students are acquiring material base-thinking, time management, production methods and various software skills through this digital fabrication. However, it appears to be the case that architecture students use digital fabrication mainly in the final stage of their design or in their finishing work. In this study, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technologies have been used as a sketch tool rather than simply for fabricating a final product in the architectural design process and the advantages of this educational practice are demonstrated.

summary In continuation to the Deceptive Landscape Installation research project (Agkathidis, Kocatürk 2014), this paper investigates the implementation of generative design techniques in undergraduate architectural design education. After reviewing the main definitions of generative design synoptically, we have assessed the application of a modified generative method on a final year, undergraduate design studio, in order to evaluate its potential and its suitability within the framework of a research led design studio, leading to an RIBA accredited Part I degree. Our research findings based on analysis of the design outputs, student performance, external examiners reports as well as student course evaluation surveys indicate a positive outcome on the studio's design approach, as well as its suitability for an undergraduate design studio. They initiate a flourishing debate about accomplishments and failures of a design methodology, which still remains alien to many undergraduate curricula.

summary Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are currently making a dynamic appearance in the architectural realm. Social media are being bombarded by word-to-image/image-to-image generated illustrations of fictive buildings generated by tools such as ‘Midjourney’, ‘DALL-E’, ‘Stable Diffusion’ and others. Architects appear to be fascinated by the rapidly generated and inspiring ‘designs’ while others criticise them as superficial and formalistic. In continuation to previous research on Generative Design, (Agkathidis, 2015), this paper aims to investigate whether there is an appropriate way to integrate these new technologies as a generative tool in the educational architectural design process. To answer this question, we developed a design workflow consisting of four phases and tested it for two semesters in an architectural design studio in parallel to other studio units using conventional design methods but working on the same site. The studio outputs were evaluated by guest critics, moderators and external examiners. Furthermore, the design framework was evaluated by the students through an anonymous survey. Our findings highlight the advantages and challenges of the utilisation of AI image synthesis tools in the educational design process of an architectural design approach.

summary The following paper presents a reflection on computational design education in Architecture schools. For approaching this subject, the specific case of the Programming for Architecture course taught at Instituto Superior Técnico - Universty of Lisbon is presented and analyzed through the students' point of view. The aim of the course is to focus on representation methods through programming, introducing the fundamentals of computational approach to architectural design. We will explain and discuss the subject teaching methods, the structure of the course and the school environment. Also we will express the students' opinion regarding the class organization, the contents of the program and the usefulness of programming, as well as suggestions for an improved strategy for teaching computational methods to Architecture students.

summary The Klimasymmetry research project is part of ongoing investigations that ask how the design of a surface emanating radiant heating and cooling can influence the non-visual spatial boundaries created by asymmetrical thermal conditions. This research investigates the nature of the surface as an initiator of a thermal environment in an attempt to locate thermal tactility and the spatial perception according to radiant heat transfer. Surface qualities such as the quantity of area and thermal capacity of the material affects the ability of the panel to emit or absorb electromagnetic radiation, informing the geometry, topography, and location of each panel relative to the human body.

summary Architectural form and performance are affected by the designer's graphical representation methods. Parametric CAD systems, as design and representation tools, have become ubiquitous in architectural practice and education. Literature in the area of parametric design reviews is scarce and focused within building inspection and construction coordination domains. Additionally, platforms marketed as design review tools lack basic functionality for conducting comprehensive, parametric, and performance-based reviews. We have developed a user interface prototype where geometric and non-geometric information of a Building Information Model were translated into an interactive gaming environment. The interface allows simultaneous occupation and simulation of spatial geometry, enabling the user to engage with object parameters, as well as, performance-based, perspectival, diagrammatic, and orthographic representations for total spatial and performance comprehension.

summary In this study, we revisit the concepts of abstraction and materialization with regards to the theoretical framework of new materialism. Underlining the changing relationship between design through abstraction (DtA) and design through materialization (DtM) in design history, we propose an integration of the two towards achieving design emergence. Additional to a theoretical framework, we provide a showcase through material experiments of plaster and abstractions in the form of shape computation. We discuss results as parameters for future digital implementations and potentials for design practice and education.

summary This paper discusses an approach to adapting trabecular bone structures for the design of complex architectural components exemplified through structural nodes. Based on the paradigm shift in additive fabrication, namely the ability to print structural metals, this paper identifies new methods for architectural and structural design that allow to create porous, intricate architectural components. Those components are designed in analogy to bone structures. The paper presents a metaball-based application, programmed in Processing, which allows creating n-legged nodes using parametric gradient maps. The approach aims at reduction of weight and waste, while exploring the novel aesthetic properties of such bio-constructed networks.

summary Self-censorship can be observed in architectural students. Due to drawing and development methods of design representation, some students do not create the design they dream about. Believing that you do not have the ability or the technique to represent the ideas on paper or using physical models can cause the self-censorship in the students. The production of physical models is very important for the design thinking and for architectural student’s experience. The tree-dimensional printers can help as a tool to print complex volumetric models or detailed models allowing students to create freely.

summary This paper describes the development of a sentient canopy that interacts with human visitors by using its own internal motivation. Modular curiosity-based machine learning behaviour is supported by a highly distributed system of microprocessor hardware integrated within interlinked cellular arrays of sound, light, kinetic actuators and proprioreceptive sensors in a resilient physical scaffolding system. The curiosity-based system involves exploration by employing an expert system composed of archives of information from preceding behaviours, calculating potential behaviours together with locations and applications, executing behaviour and comparing result to prediction. Prototype architectural structures entitled Sentient Canopy and Sentient Chamber developed during 2015 and 2016 were developed to support this interactive behaviour, integrating new communications protocols and firmware, and a hybrid proprioreceptive system that configured new electronics with sound, light, and motion sensing capable of internal machine sensing and externally- oriented sensing for human interaction. Proprioreception was implemented by producing custom electronics serving photoresistors, pitch-sensing microphones, and accelerometers for motion and position, coupled to sound, light and motion-based actuators and additional infrared sensors designed for sensing of human gestures. This configuration provided the machine system with the ability to calculate and detect real-time behaviour and to compare this to models of behaviour predicted within scripted routines. Testbeds located at the Living Architecture Systems Group/Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (LASG/PBAI, Waterloo/Toronto), Centre for Information Technology (CITA, Copenhagen) National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in Washington DC are illustrated.

summary The underlying thesis of the research described in this paper is that imaginative, model-based explorations may help us better understand iconic architectural artefacts, such as cultural heritage projects. In order to systematically consider and study architectural artefacts, it is essential for academics to reach a level of clarity – and potentially even consensus – concerning the domains of architectural design that may be considered relevant and to question - often implicitly – shared conceptions. This paper intends to communicate the results and findings of an in-depth case-based exploration on the basis of ten design artefacts, using a specially developed conceptual framework. Furthermore, the aim was to draw conclusions concerning the benefits and potentials of this approach in the context of heritage-based architectural research in an academic environment.

summary This paper was motivated by Frey and Osborne’s [1] work about the probability of different occupations being computerised in the near future, titled “The Future of Employment”. In their study, the architect’s profession had a very low probability of being automated, which does not do justice to the past fifty years of research in the field of architectural design automation. After reviewing some concepts in economics and labor, and identifying three categories of tasks in regards to automation, we propose a new estimate, by looking independently at 30 architectural tasks. We also took into account the reported advances in the automation of these tasks through scientific research. We conclude that there is presently a change in skill requirements for architects, suggesting that we have to rethink architectural education, so architects will not need to compete against the computer in the near future.

The paper presents the outcomes of a collaborative undergraduate architectural design studio that investigates the realms of architectural robotics and computation by stepping into the fecund intersections between multiple disciplines. The pedagogical prototype, Unsolicited: An Inconvenient Studio, broadly focused on the topics of robotics and responsive architectures. The notion of robotics was interpreted to include a range of robotic technologies and their formal manifestations in the form of biomorphic, mechanomorphic, polymorphic, and amorphic robots, and interactive architecture. Taught using a recently developed framework that focuses on self-organizing systems and the creation of innovative technology-driven design entrepreneurs rather than merely on the creation of designed artefacts, students found themselves not only innovating with new digital technologies but also bridging architecture, urbanism and computer science. The paper describes the pedagogy, processes, and outcomes of the studio.

summary Design projects that address the context of cultural heritage through materiality and narrative are perhaps more necessary in our time than in any other. In an age of rapid access to countless images stored in an ethereal, global, technical landscape such as the World Wide Web, the ability for students to engage narrative and materiality through direct sensory experience is vital. An active dialogue within and through a design process can and should address these phenomena.
