title VirtuAUL - A Design Framework for Adaptive Lighting
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2015.1.201
source Martens, B, Wurzer, G, Grasl T, Lorenz, WE and Schaffranek, R (eds.), Real Time - Proceedings of the 33rd eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, Austria, 16-18 September 2015, pp. 201-210
summary The rapid development of lighting technology and the integration of information technology into our everyday environments, have opened up new possibilities for the creative and sustainable design of adaptive lighting. For the design, control and real-world implementation of adaptive lighting, we present a novel design framework called VirtuAUL. The framework consists of computational methods and tools that allow for the lighting designer to design adaptive lighting processes, that generate lighting patterns based on sensor stimuli, without the need for programming. The control and design methodology is based on the deployment of network-based agents: designer controls and guides flows of agents in a virtually defined network, where lights and sensors act as the network nodes. The VirtuAUL designer software allows for the designer to graphically define the adaptive processes that generate the lighting patterns by modifying the network nodes, topology, link directionalities, agent parameters and other design elements.

title Generative Design Methods - Implementing Computational Techniques in Undergraduate Architectural Education
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2015.2.047

summary In continuation to the Deceptive Landscape Installation research project (Agkathidis, Kocatürk 2014), this paper investigates the implementation of generative design techniques in undergraduate architectural design education. After reviewing the main definitions of generative design synoptically, we have assessed the application of a modified generative method on a final year, undergraduate design studio, in order to evaluate its potential and its suitability within the framework of a research led design studio, leading to an RIBA accredited Part I degree. Our research findings based on analysis of the design outputs, student performance, external examiners reports as well as student course evaluation surveys indicate a positive outcome on the studio's design approach, as well as its suitability for an undergraduate design studio. They initiate a flourishing debate about accomplishments and failures of a design methodology, which still remains alien to many undergraduate curricula.

title Structural design based on performance applied to development of a lattice wind tower
source The next city - New technologies and the future of the built environment [16th International Conference CAAD Futures 2015. Sao Paulo, July 8-10, 2015. Electronic Proceedings/ ISBN 978-85-85783-53-2] Sao Paulo, Brazil, July 8-10, 2015, pp. 326.
summary This paper studies the process of parametric and algorithmic design, integrating structural analysis and design for the generation of complex geometric structures. This methodology is based on the Performative Model, where the shape is generated using performance criteria. In the approach, the development of complex structures is only possible by reversing the process of thinking to generate the form with established parameters for geometry, material and loading aspects. Thus, the structural engineer no longer only participates in the evaluation phase but also appears in the early stages, creating a process of exploration and production of common knowledge among architects and engineers. To research performance-based design, the development of a conceptual lattice for a wind tower is proposed. Thus, a system is made to generate geometries using Rhinoceros software, the Grasshopper plugin, and the VB programming language, integrated with stress analysis through the Scan & Solve plugin.

summary A shape grammar-based computational system for chair design is presented. The paper focuses on the development of a methodology for modelling the definition stage of the design process. It is achieved by incorporating a specific grammar into a generic grammar to assist the designer in the convergence activities during the definition stage. Both grammars and their respective implementations were previously developed by different authors. The purpose is to enable the generation of a generic design solution that encompasses characteristics of a specific style, thus permitting subsequent exploration in the development stage.

summary This paper presents research on the prototyping of multi-agent systems for architectural design. It proposes a design exploration methodology at the intersection of architecture, engineering, and computer science. The motivation of the work includes exploring bottom up generative methods coupled with optimizing performance criteria including for geometric complexity and objective functions for environmental, structural and fabrication parameters. The paper presents the development of a research framework and initial experiments to provide design solutions, which simultaneously satisfy complexly coupled and often contradicting objectives. The prototypical experiments and initial algorithms are described through a set of different design cases and agents within this framework; for the generation of façade panels for light control; for emergent design of shell structures; for actual construction of reciprocal frames; and for robotic fabrication. Initial results include multi-agent derived efficiencies for environmental and fabrication criteria and discussion of future steps for inclusion of human and structural factors.

title Phototropism of Tensile Façade System through Material Agency
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2015.127
source Emerging Experience in Past, Present and Future of Digital Architecture, Proceedings of the 20th International Conference of the Association for Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2015) / Daegu 20-22 May 2015, pp. 127-136
summary This paper researches material agencies, mechanical systems and façade designs that are able to respond to environmental changes through local interactions, inspired by biological systems. These are based on a model of distributed intelligence founded on plants and animal collectives, from which intelligent behavior emerges through simple local associations. Biological collective systems integrate material form and responsiveness and have the potential to inform new architectural and engineering strategies. The design approach of this research is based on a data-driven methodology spanning from design inception to simulation and physical modeling. Data-driven models, common in the fields of natural science, offer a method to generate and test a multiplicity of responsive solutions. The driving concepts are three types of evolutionary adaptation: flexibility, acclimation, and learning. The proposed façade system is a responsive textile shading structure which uses integrated actuators that moderate their local environments through simple interactions with their immediate neighbors. Computational techniques coupled to material logics create an integral design framework leading to heterogeneous environmental and structural conditions, producing local responses to environmental stimuli and ultimately effective performance of the whole system.

title A Symbiotic Interaction of Virtual and Physical Models in Designing Smart Building Envelope
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2015.2.633
source Martens, B, Wurzer, G, Grasl T, Lorenz, WE and Schaffranek, R (eds.), Real Time - Proceedings of the 33rd eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, Austria, 16-18 September 2015, pp. 633-642
summary The building needs to be designed to minimize its environmental footprint and to be sufficiently adaptive to changing indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. The smart building envelope is an interactive system which is adaptive to environmental conditions by transforming its shape and functions. This is a kind of machine, not like a traditional building component, which should be based on integrated engineering design methods in addition to the exploration of formal aesthetics. As artistic genius or technical skill alone cannot not fully support the design of such a novel product, the design needs to be systemized by introducing a product development method such as prototyping in other industries. Prototyping needs to be integrated in school environment, even if it requires fundamental reconfiguration of current computer-based design studios. This paper aims at proposing a teaching methodology for educating the prototyping-based design of smart building envelope system in digital design studio. This methodology allows novice designers to operate interactions between virtual-physical models. And sketches are used to share ideas to other collaborators such as programming, mechanical operations without technical knowledge. The interactions between virtual-physical models and sketches contribute to not only complement virtual models and physical models, but also achieve high-performance of smart building envelope practically.

summary This paper aims to investigate a new methodology for analysing energy performance of buildings with complex kinetic façades. In this research, the flexible movements of individual kinetic façades in a building is determined by the façades' opening ratios and the sun path. The platform development is conducted through a visual programing environment in BIM, and the process is presented with a case study. Finally, the building's energy performance is compared with a building having static façades using whole building energy analysis tool.

summary This paper presents an ongoing research, aiming to introduce a fabrication procedure for the development of tensile mesh systems. The purpose of this methodology is to be implemented in real time, based on a feedback loop logic cyclically iterated between robotic machine control and elastic material behaviour. Our purpose is to extend the capacity of robotically driven mechanisms to the fabrication of complex tensile structures and at the same time, reduce the defects that might occur due to the deformation of the elastic material. In this paper, emphasis is given to the development of a custom-made end effector tool, which is responsible to add elastic threads and create connections in the form of nodes. Based on additive fabrication logic, this process suggests the real time development of physical prototypes through the increasing smoothness of mesh structures.

summary The pairing of CAD and GIS data creates an opportunity to connect an architectural design process more immediately with its environmental constraints. Yet the GIS data may be too overwhelmingly complex to be fully used in CAD without computer-assisted methods of highlighting relevant information. This paper reports on the implementation of an integrated environment for three-dimensional design geometrical modeling and obtaining environmental impact feedback. The project focused on enhancements to the data exchange and on the development of a related set of tools. While the technologies of CAD and GIS may rely on separate representational models,in combination they can provide a more complete view of the built and natural environment. The challenge in integration is that of bridging analytical methods and database formats used in the two technologies. Our approach is rooted in part in constraint based design methods well established in CAD (e.g., Sketchpad, Generative Components, CATIA). Within such CAD systems geometrical transformations may be intentionally constrained to help enforce some previously made design decisions. Although this current implementation modestly relates to geometrical constraints, the use of probabilistic risk values is more central to its methodology.

summary With the comprehensive integration of software-based tools in actual processes of design development and fabrication, the boundaries between design and production become increasingly blurred. The methodology of the process of creation changes: the design development phase reaches up to the last produced model in a product series, in the same time the serial production cycle already starts with the first prototype. The aim of this research project is to explore and show the re-strengthening link between form, function, material and fabrication particularly driven by raising prominence of digital tools for design and production. Hereby the focus is on two points: the implementation of user data/input in the light of 'Open Innovation' as driver of form and function on one hand and the crafing inspired aproach of a comprehensive integration of material properties, behaviour tradional techniques of processing into the the design process.

summary This paper examines the application of innovative and interdisciplinary collaboration methods that emerged from the rapidly developing field of information technology and its intersection within the realm of design and architecture. These events, also referred to as hackathons, have risen in popularity in recent years (Artiles & Wallace, 2013) and stem from a design response for the increasing demand for accelerated design decisions within the field of architecture. This paper examines the potential of hackathons as a platform for rapid development of design ideas into prototypes within a time constraint of 24 hours. The paper explores the hackathon as a robust foundational element for pedagogical approaches rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration. Using a case-study research methodology, this paper probes the framework of the event, the outcomes, and the lessons learned. As this paper demonstrates, the hackathon required participants to identify and explore shifting territories through interdisciplinary teamwork to arrive at innovative solutions. In this setting, the format of the hackathon serves as a vibrant territory that enables a concrete theoretical contribution to design pedagogy, CAAD education, and collaborative professional practice.

summary Key parameter of a reasoning process supporting real time performance is the use of active heuristics that facilitate the achievement of goals in a timely manner (Dodiawala et al. 1989). A real time approach should incorporate speed, timeliness and adaptation during the execution of tasks. Speed and efficient knowledge processing are addressed for the solution of complex building engineering problems, such as the calibration of Building Energy Models (BEM) to the actual performance data. During retrofit projects, calibrated BEM models aid the design process, and provide a solid base for performative assessments. Despite the demand for building performance evaluations, BEM calibration remains a work-intensive task (Lam et al. 2014). This study proposes a time efficient framework for BEM calibration input data management based on the methodology of a blackboard artificial intelligence knowledge processing system. The resulting model was used for sequential data mining for the energy assessment during the renovation of a commercial building.

summary The following research investigates the development of an agent-based design method as an integrative design tool for polygonal surface structures. The aim of this research is to develop a computational tool that self-organizes the emergence of polygonal surface structures from interaction between its constitutive lattices. This research focuses on the ethological level of morphogenesis that is relevant to the animal or insect societies, whereby agents mediate the material organizations with environmental aspects. Meanwhile, behavior-based approaches are investigated as a bottom-up system to develop a computational framework in which the lower-level features constantly interact. The lower-level features such as material properties (e.g., geometric descriptions) are abstracted into building blocks or agents to construct the agent’s morphology. The abstracted principles, which define the agent’s morphology, are aggregated into a generative tool to explore the emergent complexities. This exploration coupled with the generative constraint mechanisms steers the collective agents system toward the cloud of solutions; hence, the collective behaviors of agents constitute the polygonal surface structures. This polygonal system is a bottom up approach of developing the complex surface that emerges through topological and topographical interaction between cells and their surrounding environment. Subsequently, the integrative system is developed through agent-based parametric modelling, in which the knowledge-based system as a top-down approach is substituted with the agent system together with its morphological features and significant behaviors.

summary This thesis presents a system that uses games. It allows people to participate in the process of designing an architectural space. The site for the design project of this experimental methodology is a courtyard on MIT campus. The games are initially prepared by the architect through sampling various objects, materials, lighting, and figures from different media such as photogrammetric models around the building site and other relevant 3D modeling/animation contents. The goal of this design system is to collage those components into a final architectural form through a democratic process. The games are distributed to students, faculty and staff who will be the users of the space being designed. Through playing these games, they provide preference about the architectural program and various design decisions regarding formal composition, details, and finishes. This crowd-sourcing occurs both implicitly and explicitly while the game is being played, and the collected feed-back informs the architect about design development. This thesis questions the role of the architects in a democratic process of design: Are we the designer of the space, or creator of a system that controls the design process?.

This research is based on the implementation of novel technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR), Robot Operating System (ROS), and computational approaches to define a drone calibration methodology, leveraging existing methods for drone path planning. Drones are equipped with measurement systems to provide geo-location and time information such as onboard Global Positioning System (GPS) sensors, and Inertial Measurement Units (IMU). As stated in previous research, to increase navigation capabilities, measurements and data processing algorithms have a critical role (Daponte et al. 2015). The outcome of this work in progress showcases valuable results in calculating and assessing accurate positioning for UAVs, and developing data exchanges in transmission, reception, and tracking.

summary The city of Vienna follows a long-term initiative to become a Smart City. Within 2050 it aims to reduce 80% of the CO2 emissions (in comparison to 1990) and looks forward to generate ways for a sustainable energy production. (Smart City Framework Strategy 2014) Reaching this targets requires a complex planning process which involves interdisciplinary stakeholders and decision makers. An interactive multi-dimensional environment, comprising spatial objects and data models, is a helpful tool during these planning processes. This paper proposes a suitable path for the development of a structural framework for such an environment. The benefits of such an environment are shown in detail, based on an application of the economic solar heat potential in Vienna.
