summary Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are currently making a dynamic appearance in the architectural realm. Social media are being bombarded by word-to-image/image-to-image generated illustrations of fictive buildings generated by tools such as ‘Midjourney’, ‘DALL-E’, ‘Stable Diffusion’ and others. Architects appear to be fascinated by the rapidly generated and inspiring ‘designs’ while others criticise them as superficial and formalistic. In continuation to previous research on Generative Design, (Agkathidis, 2015), this paper aims to investigate whether there is an appropriate way to integrate these new technologies as a generative tool in the educational architectural design process. To answer this question, we developed a design workflow consisting of four phases and tested it for two semesters in an architectural design studio in parallel to other studio units using conventional design methods but working on the same site. The studio outputs were evaluated by guest critics, moderators and external examiners. Furthermore, the design framework was evaluated by the students through an anonymous survey. Our findings highlight the advantages and challenges of the utilisation of AI image synthesis tools in the educational design process of an architectural design approach.

summary Today, 98% of megaprojects face cost overruns or delays. The average cost increase is 80% and the average slippage is 20 months behind schedule (McKinsey 2015). It is becoming increasingly challenging to efficiently support the scale, complexity and ambition of these projects. Simultaneously, project data is being captured at growing rates. We continue to capture more data on a project than ever before. Total data captured back in 2009 in the construction industry reached over 51 petabytes, or 51 million gigabytes (Mckinsey 2016). It is becoming increasingly necessary to develop new ways to leverage our project data to better manage the complexity on our projects and allow the many stakeholders to make better more informed decisions. This paper focuses on utilizing advances in data mining, data analytics and data visualization as means to extract project information from massive datasets in a timely fashion to assist in making key informed decisions for project delivery. As part of this paper, we present an innovative new use of these technologies as applied to a large-scale infrastructural megaproject, to deliver a set of over 4,000 construction documents in a six-month period that has the potential to dramatically transform our industry and the way we deliver projects in the future. This paper describes a framework used to measure production performance as part of any project’s set of project controls for accelerated project delivery.

summary The protection and preservation of historical heritage are important tasks for all walks of life because rebuilding the exclusionary social memory, symbolically representing the nation’s identity. From this reflection, the problem arises of how to make the people appreciate the historic buildings. The Region of Medium High Uruguay, will serve as pilot study on a method of applying to the enhancement of national heritage by the population that is through the materialization of form. It is with the help of computer modeling combined with digital prototyping that seeks to find effective alternatives that use new technologies in the upgrading of historic buildings, a form of knowledge, integration and collaboration. In many areas of knowledge, consciousness makes the human being is connected to the world through all the senses. And touch, as experimentation and understanding of space it inhabits, may be the most overlooked sense in recent informatization times. In this research, the new realization techniques used to attempt to leverage awareness and understanding of a heritage, for a population hitherto alien to the cultural and historical values of a local architecture.

summary This work aims to expose the methodological process of the construction of a digital urban simulator called “SIMRio”, that is being developed at the Laboratory of Digital Representation and Urban Analysis. Constructed with the technology of videogames, through the use of its engines applied to digital 3d models of central area of Rio de Janeiro, the research has the objective to develop interactive systems where one could virtually visit, in real time, not only the spaces of the city, but also different times of its history, walking between them as if were in a digital time machine.

summary Within just a few years, industrial robots have become a significant field of research within the creative industry. Due to their inherent multi-functionality they are now being used for a wide range of applications, from conceptualized ideas of human-robot interaction, to interactive media and full-scale fabrication. A significant enabling factor has been the development of designer-centric visual programming environments that make it possible for users from the creative industry to program robotic arms in an accessible and intuitive fashion. In our ongoing research we are exploring new possibilities for industrial robots in the creative industry by branching into two opposite directions: Using custom software to compensate for the limitations of used, cheap industrial robots by outsourcing computation-intensive operations, and developing new interfaces for adaptive robot control, thus dynamically coupling the robot with the visual programming environment itself.

summary This paper analyzes the evolution and trends of international conferences addressing Computer-Aided Architectural Design over the past five decades. It starts with the Design Methods Movement conferences, when the possible contributions of computers to Architectural Design started being discussed. It shows how new interests along the history of CAAD development motivated the appearance of conferences on specific topics, and it ends identifying a recent interest towards architectural practice and the software development. With this work we expect to contribute to an “archaeology” of CAAD studies.

summary This paper was motivated by Frey and Osborne’s [1] work about the probability of different occupations being computerised in the near future, titled “The Future of Employment”. In their study, the architect’s profession had a very low probability of being automated, which does not do justice to the past fifty years of research in the field of architectural design automation. After reviewing some concepts in economics and labor, and identifying three categories of tasks in regards to automation, we propose a new estimate, by looking independently at 30 architectural tasks. We also took into account the reported advances in the automation of these tasks through scientific research. We conclude that there is presently a change in skill requirements for architects, suggesting that we have to rethink architectural education, so architects will not need to compete against the computer in the near future.

summary Since 1985 the Computer-Aided Architectural Design Futures Foundation has fostered high level discussions about the search for excellence in the built environment through the use of new technologies with an exploratory and critical perspective. In 2015, the 16th CAAD Futures Conference was held, for the first time, in South America, in the lively megalopolis of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In order to establish a connection to local issues, the theme of the conference was "The next city". The city of Sao Paulo was torn down and almost completely rebuilt twice, from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s, evolving from a city built in rammed-earth to a city built in bricks and then from a city built in bricks to a city built in concrete. In the 21st century, with the widespread use of digital technologies both in the design and production of buildings, cities are changing even faster, in terms of layout, materials, shapes, textures, production methods and, above all, in terms of the information that is now embedded in built systems.Among the 200 abstracts received in the first phase, 64 were selected for presentation in the conference and publication in the Electronic Proceedings, either as long or short papers, after 3 tough evaluation stages. Each paper was reviewed by at least three different experts from an international committee of more than 80 highly experienced researchers. The authors come from 23 different countries. Among all papers, 10 come from Latin-American institutions, which have been usually under-represented in CAAD Futures. The 33 highest rated long papers are also being published in a printed book by Springer. For this reason, only their abstracts were included in this Electronic Proceedings, at the end of each chapter.The papers in this book have been organized under the following topics: (1) modeling, analyzing and simulating the city, (2) sustainability and performance of the built environment, (3) automated and parametric design, (4) building information modeling (BIM), (5) fabrication and materiality, and (6) shape studies. The first topic includes papers describing different uses of computation applied to the study of the urban environment. The second one represents one of the most important current issues in the study and design of the built environment. The third topic, automated and parametric design, is an established field of research that is finally becoming more available to practitioners. Fabrication has been a hot topic in CAAD conferences, and is becoming ever more popular. This new way of making design and buildings will soon start affecting the way cities look like. Finally, shape studies are an established and respected field in design computing that is traditionally discussed in CAAD conferences.

summary This thesis presents a system that uses games. It allows people to participate in the process of designing an architectural space. The site for the design project of this experimental methodology is a courtyard on MIT campus.The games are initially prepared by the architect through sampling various objects, materials, lighting, and figures from different media such as photogrammetric models around the building site and other relevant 3D modeling/animation contents. The goal of this design system is to collage those components into a final architectural form through a democratic process.The games are distributed to students, faculty and staff who will be the users of the space being designed. Through playing these games, they provide preference about the architectural program and various design decisions regarding formal composition, details, and finishes. This crowd-sourcing occurs both implicitly and explicitly while the game is being played, and the collected feed-back informs the architect about design development.This thesis questions the role of the architects in a democratic process of design: Are we the designer of the space, or creator of a system that controls the design process?.

summary This paper presents part of CORK’EWS, a research work developed within the framework of the Digital Architecture Advanced Program 2012/13 at ISCTE-IUL. The main goal of this investigation was to develop a parametric, customizable and adaptive wall system designed for environmental performance. Moreover, the system is based on standard industrial products: expanded cork blocks produced by Amorim Insulation industries. CAD/CAM resources were the essential tools of the research process, where fundamental and practical knowledge is integrated to understand the microstructure morphological properties of the raw material – cork – and its derivate – natural expanded cork. These properties were upscale and adapted to create a wall with an optimized solar control environmental performance. The result is a digitally fabricated prototype of a new customizable industrial product, adaptable to specific environmental conditions and installation setups being therefore easily commercialized. From microstructural morphology to macroscale construction, the research explores new application possibilities through morphogenesis and opens new possible markets for these customizable products.

summary This paper investigates the potential of soft robotics that are enabled by emergent materials in architecture. Distributed, adaptive soft robotics holds the promise to address many issues in architectural environments such as energy efficiency as well as user comfort and safety.Two examples out of a series of experiments conducted in the Material Dynamics Lab at the New Jersey Institute of Technology are being introduced and serve as a vehicle to explore distributed soft robotics in architectural environments. The design process and project development methods of the soft robotic systems integrated the fabrication of working proof of concept prototypes as well as their testing.

summary This article delineates the process of developing the project "Urbanimals" - an interactive installation designed and realised in Bristol, UK, in 2015. As the case study research, it draws attention to the difficulties in designing interactive structures in urban spaces - from an architects' idea to a construction stage. There are four areas that are being investigated: (1) Modelling interactions, (2) Negotiating locations and logistics, (3) Developing hardware and (4) Performing the on-site observations. The project draws from the idea of Smart City (SC) as the concept of the urban environment with a certain level of responsiveness through implementing a technology-driven matter that expands city offer perceivable, but gentle and not hindering way. It highlights the possible applications of projection technology and the utilisation of the 3D modelling software which provides complex tools for creating animations, movements and interactions with future users. The article gives clues how to design more engaging interactions and how to deal with implementing them in public realm.

summary The noted 19th century biologist, Ernst Haeckel, put forward the idea that the growth (ontogenesis) of an organism recapitulated the history of its evolutionary development. While this idea is defunct within biology, the idea has been promoted in areas such as education (the idea of an education being the repetition of the civilizations before). In the research presented in this paper, recapitulation is used as a metaphor within computer-aided design as a way of grouping together different generations of spatial layouts. In most CAD programs, a spatial layout is represented as a series of objects (lines, or boundary representations) that stand in as walls. The relationships between spaces are not usually explicitly stated. A representation using Lindenmayer Systems (originally designed for the purpose of modelling plant morphology) is put forward as a way of representing the morphology of a spatial layout. The aim of this research is not just to describe an individual layout, but to find representations that link together lineages of development. This representation can be used in generative design as a way of creating more meaningful layouts which have particular characteristics. The use of genetic operators (mutation and crossover) is also considered, making this representation suitable for use with genetic algorithms.

summary With an exponential increase in the possibilities of computation and computer-controlled fabrication, high density information is becoming a reality in digital design and architecture. However, construction methods and industrial fabrication processes have not yet been reshaped to accommodate the recent changes in those disciplines. Although it is possible to build up complex simulations with millions of particles, the simulation is often disconnected from the actual fabrication process. Our research proposes a bridge between both stages, where one drives the other, producing a smooth transition from design to production. A particle in the digital domain becomes a drop of material in the construction method.The architect's medium of expression has become much more than a representational tool in the last century, and more recently it has evolved even beyond a series of rules to drive from design to production. The design system is the instruction itself; embedding structure, material and tectonics and gets delivered to the very end of the construction chain, where it gets materialised. The research showcased in this paper investigates tectonic systems associated with large scale 3D printing and additive manufacturing methods, inheriting both material properties and fabrication constraints at all stages from design to production. Computational models and custom design software packages are designed and developed as strategies to organise material in space in response to specific structural and logistical input.Although the research has developed a wide spectrum of 3D printing methods, this paper focuses only on two of the most recent projects, where different material and computational logics were investigated. The first, titled Filamentrics, intends to develop free-form space frames, overcoming their homogeneity by introducing robotic plastic extrusion. Through the use of custom made extruders a vast range of high resolution prototypes were developed, evolving the design process towards the fabrication of precise structures that can be materialised using additive manufacturing but without the use of a layered 3D printing method. Instead, material limitations were studied and embedded in custom algorithms that allow depositing material in the air for internal connectivity. The final result is a 3x2x2.5m structure that demonstrates the viability of this construction method for being implemented in more industrial scenarios.While Filamentrics is reshaping the way we could design and build light weight structures, the second project Microstrata aims to establish new construction methods for compression based materials. A layering 3D printing method combines both the deposition of the binder and the distribution of an interconnected network of capillaries. These capillaries are organised following structural principles, configuring a series of channels which are left empty within the mass. In a second stage aluminium is cast in this hollow space to build a continuous tension reinforcement.

summary Montevideo has a new visitor. In the heritage building of the german architect Karl Trambauer, located in the Old City, a new presence was installed filling the vacuum left by its former collapsed dome, seeking to restore a message, adding a new vision and recovering the lost dialogue between the architecture, the city and its inhabitants. This paper summarizes and explains the experience of the workshop Adaptation 2015, held on September 2015 at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Exposing the theoretical framework, design strategies, morphogenetic development, digital manufacturing experimentations, conclusions and open questions from the experience made. We will go through this temporary intervention on Trambauer’s building, being a rare but symbiotic object, with parametric genes, digital and handcrafted manufacture, and also looking for the impact of theory and academic practices in the city.

summary Ubiquitous computing systems are changing the way retail environments are being designed. With increasing frequency, User Experience (UX) designers leveraging ubiquitous computing systems that observe and respond to user behaviors are assuming roles once held exclusively by architects. As these systems continue to spread, space designers will need to embrace UX research and design methods. We will discuss how ubiquitous computing is leveraged in our research, and our position on how these systems are impacting the design of retail environments, illustrated by several examples of UX research projects informing the design of retail environments.

summary Responsive architecture is often seen as one that merely adapts to change. This reflects its limited and still incipient application in architecture. Given the current resource’s crisis, a systemic building management is essential. This article argues that there is no established process for creating and managing responsive architecture. Therefore, it claims is necessary to deepen knowledge about systems, computation, mathematics, biology and robotics. Despite being a vast subject, it proposes a ‘state of the art’ about systems, investigating how to operate them. Based on this, proposes a method for generating responsive systems. This method is tested in a practical case.

summary The definition of Research by Design (RD) as a research methodology is not yet well established. RD takes its position not only as a research method next to the 'traditional' sciences but also in relation to the creative design practice, where transdicsiplinarity is in essential role. Rather than defining architecture being transdisciplinary in itself, we see beneficial to conduct research together with various disciplines concerning the complexity of the life-world. Also in this interdisciplinary research group we are willing to hold on the designerly way of knowledge production. Of our practical experience working in an interdisciplinary research group shared values, research project management together with participation with evaluative aims were the most challenging aspects. At its best, attempt for genuine transcdisciplinarity was beneficial and rewarding, though sometimes challenging. We would like to target the discussion how we architects, as researchers identify in an interdisciplinary research group conducting transdisciplinary research.

summary This paper presents a bottom-up approach to organising architectural-space, which offers a fresh outlook on the automatic generation of architectural layouts. Artificial creatures, modelled on Eukaryotic cells, are used as components with which to generate configurations articulating patterns of habitation. These components represent discrete activities. Activity is perceived to be the basic building block of spatial configuration in architecture. Attributes, pertaining to input and outputs, establish activities as occurring in chains of action; affected by that which has preceded and affecting that which is to transpire. Being artificial creatures these activity-components have the capacity to interact with their environment and each other, and self-organise to form aggregations. The model demonstrates an ecological approach to designing in a manner that unites computational design with biological and semiotic theory. The theoretical basis of the model is first outlined, and then the computer model is presented and described.

summary This paper presents a method of configuring architectural space that articulates the coupling of an organism with its environment; expressing the spatiality of unfolding engagement in the world. The premise is that space is a consequence of cohesion, effected through constraints and processes of enaction. An Artificial Life model is presented as an analogue of a bottom-up approach to architectural design that takes into account that we as organisms interact with our ever present changing environment and redefine our spatial domain depending on our sensory interaction with said environment.
