title Shanghai Lilong Tower Urbanism - Towards an Urbanism of Parametric Preservation
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2015.2.493
source Martens, B, Wurzer, G, Grasl T, Lorenz, WE and Schaffranek, R (eds.), Real Time - Proceedings of the 33rd eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, Austria, 16-18 September 2015, pp. 493-500
summary This paper describes a design approach for a new urban building typology for Shanghai utilizing a set of parametric design techniques to arrive at an alternative solution to current models of urbanization. The goal in this approach was to find a solution that is adaptable and sensitive to the urban environment and has the capacity to preserve historic urban street patterns. The approach included an understanding of the historic urban fabric of Shanghai, a respective plot analysis and the development of a computational method to produce a new urban type. The parametric set-up was build upon an analytical workflow with integrated feedback procedures that informed the design exploration and resulted in multiple design solutions.

summary The lack of urban planning has made the recreation areas increasingly smaller in the cities. Parks and squares gradually gave way to streets and avenues to try to accommodate the growing number of cars and motorcycles. An alternative that tries to balance recreation areas and urban roads was found in the city of San Francisco (USA). Parklets are temporary extensions of urban sidewalks that occupy a few parking spaces. This article aims to demonstrate the potential of parametric modeling in the development of parklets. Thus, anthropometric studies, amount of parking spaces and types of benches were used as input parameters. Rhinoceros and grasshopper programs were used for modeling, while 3D Studio Max was used for rendering. With this study it was possible to verify that when the project is parameterized the processes of creation and modification became faster, reducing design and implementation time.

title Development of a Method and Model for Programming Material Behaviour in a Responsive Envelope
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2015.2.449
source Martens, B, Wurzer, G, Grasl T, Lorenz, WE and Schaffranek, R (eds.), Real Time - Proceedings of the 33rd eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, Austria, 16-18 September 2015, pp. 449-458
summary The research presents an architectural method and model that organise material composites into weather-powered response building envelopes. The work is done through a set of simulation strategies including simulation of thermal sensation, simulation of material behaviours of a developed dynamic architectural envelope based on bi-material deflection and simulation of a design process based on evolutionary computation. The work finds that the proposed method and model can create dynamic expressive and environment-oriented functional building envelopes. The approach allow time-based articulation and making of architectures that respond to the thermal environment, thereby creating a basis for developing buildings that are intimately linked to dynamic environmental and human occupancy patterns.

title Development of high-definition Virtual Reality for historical architectural and urban digital reconstruction: A case study of Azuchi Castle and Old Castle Town in 1581
source The next city - New technologies and the future of the built environment [16th International Conference CAAD Futures 2015. Sao Paulo, July 8-10, 2015. Electronic Proceedings/ ISBN 978-85-85783-53-2] Sao Paulo, Brazil, July 8-10, 2015, pp. 207.
summary This study shows fundamental data for constructing a high-definition VR application under the theme of a three-dimensional visualization to restore past architecture and cities. It is difficult for widespread architectural and urban objects to be rendered in real-time. Thus, in this study, techniques for improving the level of detail (LOD) and representation of natural objects were studied. A digital reconstruction project of Azuchi Castle and old castle town was targeted as a case study. Finally, a VR application with specifications of seven million polygons, texture of 1.87 billion pixels, and 1920 × 1080 screen resolution, was successfully developed that could run on a PC. For the developed VR applications, both qualitative evaluation by experts and quantitative evaluation by end users was performed.

summary Montevideo has a new visitor. In the heritage building of the german architect Karl Trambauer, located in the Old City, a new presence was installed filling the vacuum left by its former collapsed dome, seeking to restore a message, adding a new vision and recovering the lost dialogue between the architecture, the city and its inhabitants. This paper summarizes and explains the experience of the workshop Adaptation 2015, held on September 2015 at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Exposing the theoretical framework, design strategies, morphogenetic development, digital manufacturing experimentations, conclusions and open questions from the experience made. We will go through this temporary intervention on Trambauer’s building, being a rare but symbiotic object, with parametric genes, digital and handcrafted manufacture, and also looking for the impact of theory and academic practices in the city.

title Urban Codes: Abstraction and Case-Based Approaches to Algorithmic Design and Implications for the Design of Contemporary Cities
source The next city - New technologies and the future of the built environment [16th International Conference CAAD Futures 2015. Sao Paulo, July 8-10, 2015. Electronic Proceedings/ ISBN 978-85-85783-53-2] Sao Paulo, Brazil, July 8-10, 2015, pp. 112-123.
summary This paper reports on a comparative study that evaluates two approaches to support the learning and use of algorithmic design in architecture, and extrapolates from this to consider applications for the algorithmic design of cities. The study explored two methods to reduce the barriers of using programming and potentially improve design performance. The first is the reuse of abstract algorithmic ‘patterns’. The second approach is the reuse of algorithmic solutions from specific design cases (case-based design). Reflecting on this research we outline how our findings discussed in relation to alternate thinking on the use of pattern, might inform a hybrid approach to the algorithmic design of cities.

summary The non-standard approach, widely discussed in the past years as Architecture progressively uses alternative design methods different from the Euclidean paradigm, has allowed architects to transform the way architecture is conceived and materialized. Such evolution uses computer-aided design along with automation in production to originate the environment for the aided architectural conception field in which we present a method, in its early development stage, intended to create non-standard walls and envelopes based on cellular patterns using wood as base material. We present the results obtained from modeling and building two full-scale prototypes of non-standard wooden walls.

summary A routine is a fixed program, a sequence of actions regularly followed. And the concept can be adapted at different levels in the understanding of the dynamics of cities. Today's built environments are in fact increasingly characterized by series of iterations daily performed by infrastructures, networks, buildings, and people ? as part of a well-structured pattern of components. In this sense, the city becomes a system that not only creates routine, but also pushes its urban mechanisms, its architectural spaces, and its human interactions towards performance, efficiency and the 'standard.' A-priori and top-down implementations of new technologies emphasize routine-based built environments, leaving almost no room for the (extra)ordinary. But how can the spaces, infrastructures, and places that define the social experience of tangible environments not incorporate elements of inherent spontaneity, informality, and even error that let us break routine patterns?

summary This article focuses on the use of computational tools to provide dynamic assessment and optimized arrangements while planning and discussing interventions in urban areas. The objective is to address the use of algorithmic systems for evaluating and generating urban morphologies guided by Transit Oriented Development (TOD) principles. TOD is an urban development model that considers geometric and measurable parameters for designing sustainable cities. It advocates the creation of compact mixed-use neighborhoods within walking distance to a variety of transportation options and amenities, seeking to result on optimized infrastructure provision and energy efficient low-carbon districts. This paper presents algorithmic experiments for proposing a rapid-transit district, by the optimization of its urban morphology and services’ location, providing an accurate and efficient TOD principles-oriented modelling.

title Algorithmic Thinking in Design and Construction - Working with parametric models
source Parametricism Vs. Materialism: Evolution of Digital Technologies for Development [8th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings ISBN 978-0-9955691-0-2] London (United Kingdom) 7-8 November 2016, pp. 19-28
summary This paper examines the parametric model in algorithmic design processes, using the outcome of an educational digital design and fabrication course as a case study. In its long history, algorithmic design as a form-finding method, allowed designers to manage complex non-standard associative geometries, suggesting a shift from the digital representation of form, to its systematic representation into a parametric model through code. Rather than a style or a tool, the parametric model is best defined in mathematical terms; in practice it incorporates the organizational logic of the form and the topological associations of its parts, so that a change in its constitutive parameters will invoke a concerted update of the entire model, and, iteratively, formal and structural variations. In a series of design experiments that took place at the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete in the spring of 2015, we used parametric models represented into visual code, from the initial conceptual stage to fabrication. From the experience and outcome of this course, we deduced that, compared to other digital formation methods, parametric models allow the designer to constantly interact with the model through the code, producing discreet variations without losing control of the design intentions, by “searching” into a wide range (albeit finite) of virtual results. This suggested a shift in culturally embedded patterns of modernist design thinking.

title A platform for urban analytics and semantic data integration in city planning
source The next city - New technologies and the future of the built environment [16th International Conference CAAD Futures 2015. Sao Paulo, July 8-10, 2015. Electronic Proceedings/ ISBN 978-85-85783-53-2] Sao Paulo, Brazil, July 8-10, 2015, pp. 204.
summary This paper presents a novel web-based platform that supports the analysis, integration, and visualization of large-scale and heterogeneous urban data, with application to city planning and decision-making. Motivated by the non-scalable character of conventional urban analytics methods, as well as by the interoperability challenges present in contemporary data silos, the illustrated system – coined SocialGlass – leverages the combined potential of diverse urban data sources. These include sensor and social media streams (Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare), publicly available municipal records, and resources from knowledge repositories. Through data science, semantic integration, and crowdsourcing techniques the platform enables the mapping of demographic information, human movement patterns, place popularity, traffic conditions, as well as citizens’ and visitors’ opinions and preferences about specific venues in a city. The paper further demonstrates an implemented prototype of the platform and its deployment in real-world use cases for monitoring, analyzing, and assessing city-scale events.

title Swarm Planning: Development of Generative Spatial Planning Tool for Resilient Cities
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2015.1.519
source Martens, B, Wurzer, G, Grasl T, Lorenz, WE and Schaffranek, R (eds.), Real Time - Proceedings of the 33rd eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, Austria, 16-18 September 2015, pp. 519-527
summary In dealing with unexpected impacts of climate change current spatial planning tools are irresponsive and inflexible. The outcomes of applications of these tools are very limited in number, producing static plans that if implemented are very vulnerable to climate hazards. Therefore, an innovative generative tool has been developed to support spatial planning which results in designs that are responsive and adjustable to unexpected, simulated changes. The development of the generative tool is informed by swarm planning theory, and by contemporary generative approaches in urban design and planning. The generative tool is modeled as an Agent-Based System and utilizes versions of the canonical flocking algorithm. The agents are abstract cubical units of space that represent building envelopes. The agents exist and work within an environment that represents a site in terms of topography, land value, and available/buildable land. The agents receive information from the environment and act upon this information. The unexpected climate impact is a simulated flood, which affects both the environment and the agents. The outputs of the tool are generated 'bottom-up' in order to study emergent spatial configurations, as massings of building units.

summary The number of variables acting upon urban landscapes is numerous and interconnected, closely resembling complex systems in constant dynamic transformation. Current analytical methods and descriptions of the city are domain specific, limited in scope, and discretize the city into quantifiable individual representations, resulting in an equally limited urban policy and design. If we are to produce urban systems capable of contributing to the robustness and resiliency of cities, we ought to understand and represent the comprehensive network of actors that construct contemporary urban landscapes. On one hand, the natural sciences approach the analysis of complex systems by primarily focusing on the development of models capable of describing their stochastic formation, remaining agnostic to the contextual properties of their individual components and oftentimes discretizing the otherwise continuous relationships among parts. signers work in groups. They need to share information either synchronously or asynchronously as they work with parametric modeling software, as with all computer-aided design tools. Receiving information from collaborators while working may intrude on their work and thought processes. Little research exists on how the reception of design updates influences designers in their work. Nor do we know much about designer preferences for collaboration. In this paper, we examine how sharing and receiving design updates affects designers’ performances and preferences. We present a system prototype to share changes on demand or in continuous mode while performing design tasks. A pilot study measuring the preferences of nine pairs of designers for different combinations of control modes and design tasks shows statistically significant differences between the task types and control modes. The types of tasks affect the preferences of users to the types of control modes. In an apparent contradiction, user preference of control modes contradicts task performance time.

summary Development in the study of city expansion, through biomorphic generation, could potentially assist in the design of a transportation system that will accommodate expansion whilst contributing to an ecologically balanced growth. This paper focuses on a section of a design framework which looks at how generative systems can be implemented in an architectural design of a transportation network that will respond to the site’s projected future growth. This paper suggests that by integrating biomorphic generative systems into the design process we can generate designs that respond to the surrounding context and urban growth.
