summary Previous research (Bourdakis et al, 2012; Papasarantou et al, 2013) dealt with the problem of creating information visualisation systems capable of combining historical data of MUCIV's database and developing strategies that embed the non-spatial data in spatial models. The database was primarily designed as an experimental flexible spatio-temporal configuration of dynamic visual structures generating a variety of narrations through interaction.The attempt of producing a legible configuration driven by a number of criteria, led to the proposition of two different arrangements, namely the linear and radial array. The aim of this paper is to present the next step on the visualization after redefining both the way that thematic axes and data are visualized and arranged/scattered. Alternate configurations are investigated, based also on theoretical analysis on the conceptualization and perception of information visualization systems (Card et al 1999, Ware, 2004).

summary This study shows fundamental data for constructing a high-definition VR application under the theme of a three-dimensional visualization to restore past architecture and cities. It is difficult for widespread architectural and urban objects to be rendered in real-time. Thus, in this study, techniques for improving the level of detail (LOD) and representation of natural objects were studied. A digital reconstruction project of Azuchi Castle and old castle town was targeted as a case study. Finally, a VR application with specifications of seven million polygons, texture of 1.87 billion pixels, and 1920 × 1080 screen resolution, was successfully developed that could run on a PC. For the developed VR applications, both qualitative evaluation by experts and quantitative evaluation by end users was performed.

summary Product classes share the same basic abstract layout, despite their great diversity. The present paper intends to (de)code the variety of types embedded in the class of multipurpose chairs. The contribution of this research is the development of a generative design tool, to be used at the conceptual chair design stage. A framework of five stages is proposed: (1) sample definition, considering chairs with a large diversity of types; (2) analysis of the syntax and semantics of the class through ontological classification; (3) development of a generic shape grammar, innovatively applied to product design; (4) implementation of a digital tool, that provides an interface to manipulate the chair components visualized in a 3D digital model; and (5) user evaluation of the program, in order to draw conclusions on the usability and usefulness of the tool and to collect inputs for further developments.

summary This paper describes methods, processes and the outcome of the reconstruction in the medieval wooden settlement complex in Pultusk, Poland. It is the result of the interdisciplinary cooperation between architects from Warsaw University of Technology and archaeologists from Regional Museum of Pultusk. They have undertaken the research issues of information exchange and knowledge-building processes in the digital environment. Main issues were related to the methods of computer reconstruction in architectural and urban scale, which enable alternative narrative threads. To achieve this, parametric techniques were adopted and the 'Pultusk Recontructor' application was developed in Grasshopper. The interaction between architects and archaeologists over hypotheses and alternatives was supported in urban scale by 'Rapid Reconstruction Modular Model'. This 3D printed urban model, consist of segments which can be simultaneously exchanged. It became not only a substrate for scientific debate, but also may serve an education role for the permanent Museum exhibition.

summary Our paper presents research on the development of technologies and methodologies to support preliminary design phases through data based modelling. A digital parametric model informs costs evaluations and supports iterative and visual space exploration solutions. Thanks to associative modelling, the architectural conception is renewed and digital tools support design decision-making in a creative way. We propose to make project cost a design parameter through an interactive handling of a 3D geometric model that is relevant to strategic architectural intentions. In our experimentation, cost calculation spreadsheets are linked to a parametric models. An initial substructure of the building cost is defined based on the architectural concepts. The parametric tool directly informs the evaluation spreadsheet and a real time cost analysis is afforded to the designer. The tool supports the design process by displaying immediate feed back to the designer who can consider and control the financial implications of his hypothesis.

summary This paper describes the use of 3D digitization to acquire data and to produce technical documentation for the inventory of historical buildings. The object defined as case study is an ornamented window of the Lisbon’s Metropolitano Social Headquarters, project of the architect Norte Júnior, located in the city of Lisbon. The methodology of the research relies on the comparison of two different approaches: (1) the use of Autodesk 123D Catch software to produce a geometric model and (2) the of the software My 3D Scanner to obtain a point cloud and the MeshLab software to obtain a texturized mesh.

summary This paper presents a 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) experiment at the full scale of virtualarchitectural bodies developed through a computational technique based on the use of Cellular Automata (CA). The theoretical concept behind this technique is the decoding of errors in form generation and the invention of a process that would recreate the errors as a response to optimization (Adilenidou 2015). The generative design process established a family of structural and formal elements whose proliferation is guided through sets of differential grids (multi-grids) leading to the build-up of large span structures and edifices, for example, a cathedral. This tooling system is capable of producing, with specific inputs, a large number of outcomes in different scales. However, the resulting virtual surfaces could be considered as "unprintable" either due to their need of extra support or due to the presence of many cavities in the surface topology. The above characteristics could be categorized as errors, malfunctions, or undesired details in the geometry of a form that would need to be eliminated to prepare it for printing. This research project attempts to transform these "fabrication imprecisions" through new 3DCP techniques into factors of robustness of the resulting structure. The process includes the elimination of the detail / "errors" of the surface and their later reinsertion as structural folds that would strengthen the assembly. Through this process, the tangible outputs achieved fulfill design and functional requirements without compromising their structural integrity due to the manufacturing constraints.

summary The cognitive-theoretical foundation referring to teach drawing as a way of thinking, as well as the construction of the environment by means of drawing using transforming geometries and the formal and para-formal computational process, creating unusual geometries through generative design processes and methodologies, can be seen as some of the main possibilities in exploring dynamic experimental structures for an Adaptive Architecture. This article presents the development of a model for articulated facades, inspired by Hoberman´s Tessellates, and his Adaptive Building Initiative (ABI) project to develop facades models that respond in real time to environmental changes. In addition, we describe an experiment based on the retractable structures, inspired by Hoberman´s work and experimentations. Solutions for responsive facades can offer more flexible architectural solutions providing better use of natural light and contributing to saving energy. Using Rhinoceros and the Grasshopper for modeling and test the responsiveness, the parametric model was created to simulate geometric panels of hexagonal grids that would open and close in reaction to translational motion effects, regulating the amount of light that reaches the building.

summary The article describes the theoretical approach for the development of computational representations of masonry walls based on the concept of regions. A masonry region is intended to support the description of various levels of detail pertaining to a masonry wall assembly, capturing the evolution and complexity of design information from early conceptual stages down to construction and operation. Since different wall types are characterized by a different set of domain-specific requirements, a special emphasis is put on a flexible strategy for classification of different types of view-dependent masonry regions. This classification will provide the foundation upon which masonry specific parametric modeling and rule-checking applications can be elaborated in the future. It will also provide the basis for the definition of model views necessary for particular data queries and exchanges between design stakeholders. The article introduces the concept of regions, and discusses its implications and future steps.

The main aim is to undertake an analysis through the use of one or more drawings representing the graphic translation of an analytical thought. The piece of writing presents a theoretical approach and examples of analytical drawings produced during previous researches, using CAD and 3d modelling software, to investigate some tangible and intangible characteristics of the architectural heritage.

summary This paper presents a bottom-up approach to organising architectural-space, which offers a fresh outlook on the automatic generation of architectural layouts. Artificial creatures, modelled on Eukaryotic cells, are used as components with which to generate configurations articulating patterns of habitation. These components represent discrete activities. Activity is perceived to be the basic building block of spatial configuration in architecture. Attributes, pertaining to input and outputs, establish activities as occurring in chains of action; affected by that which has preceded and affecting that which is to transpire. Being artificial creatures these activity-components have the capacity to interact with their environment and each other, and self-organise to form aggregations. The model demonstrates an ecological approach to designing in a manner that unites computational design with biological and semiotic theory. The theoretical basis of the model is first outlined, and then the computer model is presented and described.

summary The opportunities for the use of Digital Manufacturing in the field of architecture have increased tremendously over the past years. Today, already a large variety of methods and processes are used for the production of architectural models or even prototypes and design models. By now, this new technology has also become firmly established in the education of students. In this context, especially the theoretical basics of digital manufacturing, that is to say the integration of CAAD with the manufacturing process, and the special characteristics of the additive manufacturing, i.e. assembly in layers, are taught. As a demonstration of the practical application of the new technology of 3D printing, this paper will focus on the Workshop Digital Manufacturing. Due to the new approach of this workshop, which relies on the assembly of a 3D printer from an assembly kit, the students gain profound insights into the technology and functionality of 3D printers. In a next step, the students realize various models with the 3D-printer and in doing so develop design guidelines for additive manufacturing autonomously.

summary Interactive Architecture and Responsive Architecture are provocative fields of investigation and have potentially disruptive and far reaching effects for architecture. However it can be argued that these fields haven’t been developed as a direct response to previously identified architectural demands. Instead, they have risen as consequence of new technology availability, with ad hoc discussions in the context of the built environment. In order to test this hypothesis, 229 publications were examined and narrowed down to 77 papers and 41 design projects, which were systematically analyzed. The primary objective of this investigation is to understand Interactive Architecture’s development with regard to justification. This understanding provides us with the basis to speculate on the possibly expanding introduction of extraneous technological solutions to the discipline of architecture. The research findings indicate a mismatch between theoretical discourse and projects being developed in those fields. They also describe the current state of Interactive Architecture research.

summary While learning computer-aided modeling techniques, students of architecture should not only gain knowledge on how to model three-dimensional forms, but also how to define and understand the information beneath the shapes. Architectural presentation as an intellectual communication-focused process requires new media to channel information in a contemporary way. These can be text, image, sound, video or a digital model. The integration of augmented reality in teaching computer-aided modeling in architecture school provides more thorough learning experience as it opens new opportunities. The authors present the process of implementing AR technology in architectural education - its theoretical background, the outcome of students' work and technical solutions. They argue that the use of AR interface increases the effectiveness of user-model interaction in comparison to standard mouse-based techniques of three-dimensional manipulation due to the intuitive touch-screen interaction and direct control on the camera.

summary The first step in a valorisation project as well as in a management plan is developing a knowledge scheme. A great amount of data usually remains fragmentary: historical, technical, legal data and diagnostics do not contribute to an integrated and multidisciplinary approach. These sets of problems are particularly pronounced in architectural assets. In order to cope with these needs, the paper illustrates the results of a research dedicated to the identification of strengths and weakness of two important information systems: SIGeC/web and SICaR/web. Both are provided by the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Tourism (MIBACT). These databases are particularly useful and active tools, to encourage not only the knowledge of Italian heritage, but also their management. Furthermore, it will incline experts from a different background towards unexplored fields and people, who are not expert, in a deeper understanding of the cultural heritage.

summary The paper presents results of a research conducted in 2015 and 2016 at Lodz University of Technology. It proposes a purpose and context fit approach towards the automation of urban data generation based on GIS tools and New Urbanism typologies. summary This applied research brings together the performance analysis of a building's micro-scale and urban-infrastructure's macro-scale. A New York City lot, is serving as the background of experimentation with parametric design, performance simulation, data analysis and visualization. The paper describes the process of integrating design intentions, location parameters, climate data, material properties, and space quality and sustainability metrics into one platform. Although in-depth domain knowledge is irreplaceable, the paper argues that the exploration into contemporary, easily accessible and algorithmic simulation software, provides a unique educational opportunity for architects and students to integrate performance driven design in their every-day practice, and become aware of the consequences of their design on urban infrastructure systems. This allows them to reduce the time frame between design iterations and performance evaluation for the benefit of better informed decisions.

summary The rise of digital building models has devalued the broad domain of architectural visualization, a former core topic of the domain. At the same time, digital media has opened up new possibilities for interactive and explorative visual representations. Against this background the workshop advocates to rediscover visualization as a distinct topic in the context of architecture and construction. The workshop introduces a method and a theoretic framework for the creation of visual representations from building information models under involvement of architects and engineers as domain experts, and a prototypical implementation, which serves as a proof of concept and allows for the practical application of the method. The workshop presents the prototype based on selected hands-on examples.

summary Cultural heritage assets are valuable, providing important information about humanity's past and conveying it to the future. Unfortunately, conventional documentation is insufficient to preserve them for the next generations. Furthermore, increasing visitor interaction with these assets and raising awareness has been one of the challenges in this field. In this paper, we will examine how mobile LiDAR (Laser Detection and Ranging) technology can be used to precisely scan and document historical sites and how it can be combined with gamification elements to provide visitors with better experiences. It is also important that the texture taken in mobile laser scanning can be used to better visualize 3D mesh models of the scanned objects, so the fastest application that produces 3D models is selected. The study area is Syedra Ancient City in Alanya / Turkey, where the research and excavation process has continued since 2015 and the restoration projects started in 2023. Future work includes the creation of experiences to provide a basis for gamification and revitalizing the story of the heritage for the visitors through digital storytelling and AR (Augmented Reality). Preserving historical sites while providing visitors with a more in-depth, vivid and enjoyable experience are important facts for enhancing cultural heritage and passing it on to future generations.
