title Surface Shape Grammar Morphology to Optimize Daylighting in Mixed-Use Building Skin
source Abdelmohsen, S, El-Khouly, T, Mallasi, Z and Bennadji, A (eds.), Architecture in the Age of Disruptive Technologies: Transformations and Challenges [9th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings ISBN 978-1-907349-20-1] Cairo (Egypt) [Virtual Conference] 2-4 March 2021, pp. 479-492
summary Building Performance simulation is escalating towards design optimization worldwide utilizing computational and advanced tools. Egypt has its plan and agenda to adopt new technologies to mitigate energy consumption through various sectors. Energy consumption includes electricity, crude oil, it encompasses renewable and non-renewable energy consumption. Egypt Electricity (EE) consumption by sector percentages is residential (47%), industrial (25%) and commercial (12%), with the remainder used by government, agriculture, public lighting and public utilities (4%). Electricity building consumption has many divisions includes HVAC systems, lighting, Computers and Electronics and others. Lighting share of electricity consumption can vary from 11 to 15 percent in mixed buildings as in our case study which definitely less that the amount used for HVAC loads. This research aims at utilizing shape morphogenesis on facades using geometric shape grammar to enhance daylighting while blocking longwave radiations causing heat stress. Mixed-use building operates in daytime more than night which emphasizes the objective of this study. Results evaluation is referenced to LEED v4.1 and ASHRAE 90.1-2016 window-to-wall ratio calibration and massive wall description. Geometric morphogenesis relies on three main parameters; Pattern (Geometry Shape Grammar: R1, R2, and R3), a reference surface to map from, and a target surface to map to which is the south-western façade of the case study. Enhancing Geo-morph rule is to guarantee flexibility due to the rotation of sun path annually with different azimuth and altitude angles and follow LEED V4.1 enhancements of opaque wall percent for building envelope.

title Mapeo digital a través de la diversificación de peque?os recursos visuales para potenciar la creatividad y la autonomía de los estudiantes de primer a?o en el taller de proyecto [Experiential mapping through simple digital resources to boost creativity and empower freshmen students in the design workshop]
source SIGraDi 2016 [Proceedings of the 20th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Argentina, Buenos Aires 9 - 11 November 2016, pp. 7-13
summary This paper expounds the teaching strategies used to introduce architecture students in the craft of design in the course Taller de Proyecto 1. These strategies are based on experiential mappings constructed from different digital resources allowing constantly confront design with real life, in order to maintain, throughout the process, a sensitive and precise relationship between reality and experience. It concludes that these methodologies strengthen the autonomy of students, developing a valuable reconnection with the way they look and transform the world, validating the premise that the act of design is an innate human act and not necessarily an erudite one.

title Associative Parametric Urbanism - A computational approach to parameterization of conceptual design phase
source Parametricism Vs. Materialism: Evolution of Digital Technologies for Development [8th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings ISBN 978-0-9955691-0-2] London (United Kingdom) 7-8 November 2016, pp. 207-216
summary Urban planning projects usually comprise a complex set of objectives that needs to be addressed by developing a number of proposals. This requires a lot of repetitive steps resulting in fewer and slowly-developed design alternatives. To address the limitations of the existing system, this research introduces the merge of associative parametric design tools with the conceptual design phase of urban planning process to propose a Parameterized Conceptual Design Phase. The developed Associative Algorithm within the proposed phase represents a computational approach that translates a site’s settings into local attractors to define urban fabric, and provide the designer with variations for optimal solutions. The Informal Settlement of Ezbet El Matar, Alexandria, is selected as the case study of this approach.

title Using Time As a Sustainable Tool to Control Daylight in Space - Creating the Chronoform
source Parametricism Vs. Materialism: Evolution of Digital Technologies for Development [8th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings ISBN 978-0-9955691-0-2] London (United Kingdom) 7-8 November 2016, pp. 217-226
summary Just as Einstein's own Relativity Theory led Einstein to reject time, Feynman’s Sum over histories theory led him to describe time simply as a direction in space. Many artists tried to visualize time as Étienne-Jules Marey when he invented the chronophotography. While the wheel of development of chronophotography in the Victorian era had ended in inventing the motion picture, a lot of research is still in its earlier stages regarding the time as a shaping media for the architectural form. Using computer animation now enables us to use time as a flexible tool to be stretched and contracted to visualize the time dilation of the Einstein's special relativity. The presented work suggests using time as a sustainable tool to shape the generated form in response to the sun movement to control the amount of daylighting entering the space by stretching the time duration and contracting time frames at certain locations of the sun trajectory along a summer day to control the amount of daylighting in the morning and afternoon versus the noon time.

title La ciudad inteligente, un palimpsesto digital. El caso Fray Bentos [Smart City, a digital palimpsest. Case study Fray Bentos]
source SIGraDi 2016 [Proceedings of the 20th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Argentina, Buenos Aires 9 - 11 November 2016, pp.849-852
summary The aim of this paper is to present the partial results of the project "La ciudad inteligente; un palimpsesto digital", which is currently being developed. The project focuses into the emerging paradigm of Smart cities from a regional perspective, transcending the timeless notion of urban-rural dichotomy, to focus on the territory as an integral cultural landscape. Reflection, but also experimentation on specific social-based technological applications applied to territory studies, constitute an essential tool in building the reality of a smart city. From the design and implementation of a strategic action plan designed to be completed in four years, this paper shows objectives, theoretical basis, used tools and partial results of the experiment carried out in the Paisaje Industrial Fray Bentos, recently declared "World Heritage" by UNESCO.

title Artesanía en Latinoamérica: Experiencias en el contexto de la Fabricación Digital [Artisanship in Latin America: Experiences in the context of Digital Fabrication]
source SIGraDi 2016 [Proceedings of the 20th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Argentina, Buenos Aires 9 - 11 November 2016, pp.426-432
summary In moments when the artisanship tradition seems to disappear because of industrial production, we analyze cases where digital fabrication and visual programming were used in Latin American craft, encouraged by architects with skills in digital tools. The situations confront artisans with access to digital platforms and internet, use of learned skills, and the need to modify the technological level in their products and processes. Regional initiatives, which could change contemporary design history in the region with the establishing of a trans-disciplinary systematized synergy, show that traditional materials are used and unique components maintain their originality, from a region that attempts to enter into new global markets.
