summary Cost estimate in architectural projects is an important factor for decision-making and financing the project in both early design phase and detailed design phase. In Korea, estimate work based on 2D drawing has generated problems of difference form QTO according to worker’s mistake and know-how. In addition, 2D-based estimation are obtained uncertainty factors of estimation depending on lack of infor- mation due to becoming larger and more complex than any other pro- ject of the architectural project. In order to solve limitations, this study is to suggest an open BIM-based schematic estimation process and a prototype system within the building frame through linking QTO and cost information. This study consists of the following steps: 1) Ana- lysing Level of Detail (LoD) to apply to the process and system, 2) BIM modelling for open BIM-based QTO, 3) Verifying the quality of the BIM model, 4) Developing a schematic estimation prototype sys- tem. This study is expected to improve work efficiency as well as reli- ability of construction cost.

title Investigating cultural uniqueness in theme parks through finding relationships between visual integration of visitor traffics and capacity of service facilities

summary The goal of the article is to find the relationships between theme park visitor traffics and service facility location along with their capacities. To do that, we analyzed four Disneylands situated in Paris, Tokyo, and the United States (Florida and California). By analyzing the visual integration of visitor traffics at each Disneyland and calculating the capacities of service facilities such as the attractions, shops, and restaurants, we ran through a linear and a geographically weighted regression analysis. Our results indicate that there is a unique relationship between the service facility placements and the amount of predicted traffic flows for each Disneyland.

summary Large-scale airports such as Incheon International Airport have large-scale terminals, annex buildings, and numerous open spaces. An integrated space management system is required to manage these buildings and spaces efficiently. Thus, Incheon International Airport Corporation developed a three-dimensional computer-aided design–based integrated space management system. The major system development goal was to provide intuitive three-dimensional-based visual information, thereby realizing an integrated space and asset management system that does not require expert knowledge of any specific field, such as architecture. This article discusses the construction of the system and the problems that had to be resolved to achieve this goal.

summary People have started spending time with digital tools and virtual worlds to escape reality's horrors. However, designed spaces are more than the players' needs, especially those digital games that their stories involve urban environments. This inefficiency causes spending futile efforts both in time and cost for the digital games' productions; The urban environments in these digital games are replicas of real-world cities. Some companies use some techniques for downgrading replicas. Therefore, this study aims to uncover the used techniques for designing Tom Clancy's The Division (2016). By using reverse engineering methodology and qualitative comparative analysis, the in-game map compared with the real-world map. Based on the results, the used techniques allowed the designers to scale down the game environment to be 2.5 times smaller than the actual city. Rather, verisimilitude is achieved by combining sufficiently accurate elements to give the impression of complete accuracy. By implementing the results of this research, designers can develop smaller replicas to be perceived as more extensive.

summary With the growing responsibility for the environmental load of building, the demand for sustainable building is increasing. Sus- tainable design requires an enormous amount of information, and most of this information can be captured by Building Information Modelling (BIM). In this context, the management of information in a BIM object as a container for exchanging information is necessary for analyzing a building’s sustainability. However, there are problems in generating a reliable sustainability simulation model from BIM, such as the inefficiency of required information and low accessibility to a proper BIM object. In order to provide a new approach for generating a reliable sustainability simulation model in a BIM-based design pro- cess, this study suggests the integrated management environment of the property information of a BIM object.

summary Embedded in Chinas urbanization process, the growth of gated residential estates has gradually induced severance of urban spaces, resulting in an underutilization of public amenities, a lack of walkable permeability, and congestion of traffic. Responding to these negative effects on urban development, the CPC has released a guideline in February 2016 to prohibit the development of any new closed residential areas in principle and to advocate ungated communities. In this paper, we utilized ABM simulation analysis to test different degrees of openness, the position of new entrances/openness, and pedestrian network typologies, aiming to explore feasible strategies to accommodate the new urban design agenda. A series of typical gated compounds in Beijing were selected for comparative case studies, conducted under different degrees of openness of each case and under diverse ungating modes between cases. On the basis of these analyses, we summarized a sequence of pedestrian-centric design strategies, seeking to increase the communities permeability and walkability by suggesting alternative internal and external road network design options for Beijing urban renewal. By integrating quantified simulation into the empirical method of urban design, our research can positively assist and inform urban practitioners to propose a more sustainable urbanity in the future.

summary Today, human activities constitute the primary environmental impact on the planet. In this context, commitments to sustainability, or minimization of damage, prove insufficient. To develop regenerative, futuring1 capabilities, architectural design needs to extend beyond the form and function of things in contained projects and engage with the management of complex systems. Such systems involve multiple types of dynamic phenomena – biotic and abiotic, technical and cultural – and can be understood as living. Engagement with such living systems implies manipulation of pervasive and unceasing change, irrespective of whether it is accepted by design stakeholders or actively managed towards homeostatic or homeorhetic conditions. Manipulation of continuity requires holistic and persistent design involvements. In other words, “designers should become the facilitators of flow, rather than the originators of maintainable ‘things’ such as discrete products or images.

summary This research established classification system which contains five principles and variables to classify the types of the virtual landscape in digital games. The principles of the classification are Story, Space Shape, Space and Action Dimension, User Complexity and Interaction Level. With this classification system, our research group found the most representative types of virtual landscape in the digital game market through 1996 to 2016. Although mathematically there can be 288 types of virtual landscape, only 68 types have been used in the game market in recent twenty years. Among the 68 types, we defined 3 types of virtual landscape as the most representative types based on the growth curve and a number of cases. Those three representative types of virtual landscapes are Generating / Face / 3D-3D / Single / Partial, Providing / Chain / 3D-3D / Single / Partial and Providing / Linear / 2D-2D / Single / Partial. With the result, the researchers will be able to establish the virtual landscape design framework for the future research.

summary When considering architectural and urban responses to autonomous mobility, it becomes evident that the future strategies will have to include a significant transformation to the built environment, particularly the ways it operates and interacts with inhabitants. Designers will not only need to rethink formal and functional arrangements but also, and perhaps primarily, consider the environment--buildings and cities--as active and equal actors with adaptive and autonomous behaviors similarly to those people or self-driving cars manifest. This paper discusses initial planning and design strategies for the integration of autonomous vehicles and other forms of autonomous mobility into the built environment. Specifically, it looks into necessary steps required to develop infrastructure to a level of autonomy that can facilitate a next generation of wayfinding and mobility. A growing research area into smaller personal mobility vehicles that would revolutionize elderly and disabled mobility brings to the light the major technical challenges present in current building infrastructure.

summary In building information modelling (BIM), the amount of in- formation increased and architectural design processes became more complex as projects expand. This is because while a collaboration en- vironment is important for smooth communication among experts, this has not been realised because of unclassified file synchronisation and permission settings among team members. Therefore, this study aims to support cooperation in BIM modelling projects by synchronising BIM data from different computers and rendering BIM project man- agement easier by providing a BIM model viewer and data through the Web. The proposed technology, which is a construction project- type, purpose-tailored browsing technology, provides BIM infor- mation related to construction environments and planning processes only to the relevant experts.

summary The rapid emergence of computational design tools, advanced material systems and robotic fabrication within the disciplines of architecture and construction has granted designers immense freedom in form and assembly, while retaining pronounced control over output quality throughout the entirety of the design and fabrication process. Simultaneously, the complexity inherent within these tools and processes can lead to a loss of craft though the production of methodologies, forms and artifacts left with extremely recognizable residues from tooling processes utilized during their production. This paper investigates the fecund intersection of digital technologies and handcraft through core-less carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) winding as a means of creating a new typology of digital craft blurring the line between human and machine. Through the lens of an innovative wound CFRP shelter rolyPOLY completed during the winter of 2015, this paper will show the exigencies and affordances between the realms of digital and analog methodologies of CFRP winding on large-scale structures.

summary The introduction of lightweight Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) based systems into the discipline of architecture and design has created new opportunities for form, fabrication methodologies and material efficiencies that were previously difficult if not impossible to achieve through the utilization of traditional standardized building materials. No longer constrained by predefined material shapes, nominal dimensions, and conventional construction techniques, individual building components or entire structures can now be fabricated from a single continuous material through a means that best accomplishes the desired formal and structural objectives while creating minimal amounts of construction waste and disposable formwork. This paper investigates the design, fabrication and structural potentials of wound, pre-impregnated CFRP composites in architectural-scale applications through the lens of numeric and craft based composite winding implemented in two unique research projects (rolyPOLY + Cloud Magnet). Fitting into the larger research agenda for the CFRP-based robotic housing prototype currently underway in the “One Day House” initiative, these two projects also function as a proof of concept for CFRP monocoque and gridshell based structural systems. Through a rigorous investigation of these case studies, this paper strives to answer several questions about the integration of pre-impregnated CFRP in future full-scale interventions: What form-finding methodologies lend themselves to working with CFRP? What are the advantages and disadvantages of working with pre-impregnated CFRP tow in large-scale applications? What are efficient methods for the placement of CFRP fiber on-site? As well as how scalable is CFRP?
