summary This paper provides an overview on the relation between computational ontologies and shape grammars regarding the development and production of multi-purpose Semantic Design Systems. The objective of the author's ongoing research is to assist the creation of generative design systems, applicable to design processes in general. Shape grammar rules and ontologies in these systems will be focusing on abstract, generic rules and generic descriptions. When combined through contextually specified relations, these assume semantic expressions and should be able to produce meaningful results.We collect here a short state of the art of the research developed in the fields of architecture, urbanism and computer science in the past ten years regarding the use of knowledge bases (ontologies) combined with generative design systems (with a particular focus on shape grammars). We expect to provide both insight about architectural and urban typologies and the production of meaningful designs using automated generative design systems.

summary This paper describes an experiment that took place as the last day of the elective course "De Humani Corporis Fabrica - Fabricating Emotions through Architecture". The goal of the Experiment was to evaluate the emotional experience of 1:1 scale architectural settings. The Experiment was part of the research for a PhD thesis which describes the relationship between architecture and the body since Vitruvius until the current theories of embodiment. The referred to thesis proposes the incorporation of the corporeal practices of performance art in the teaching of Architecture and combines these with the use of emotion measurement methodologies in order to evaluate the experience of architectural space and design objects during the design process. Psycho-physiological changes in the body's sensory perception during the performances were evaluated through the combined use of biometric technology (e-health platform), a Presence Questionnaire and a SAM chart. The course was attended by 4 students who participated as subjects in the Experiment. The Experiment had the technical support of the DFKI - Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz, which provided the machinery necessary to collect the biometric data during the Experiment and the knowledge needed to process them.

summary Virtual Replica is a contemporary artistic project that reflects upon our relation with the world. It is a camera (room) obscuradesigned with the aid of parametric software in order to be fabricated with CNC technology based on thin layers of plywood. An ephemeral architecture that creates an immersive experience for the visitor who is surrounded by a number of “virtual screens” exhibiting inverted images of the immediate exterior. This paper proposes the phenomenon of camera obscura as a proto building that gives life to an architecture of the image, using it as its built as well as its theoretical fundamental reference.

summary This paper investigates an agency of materials through a design methodology that follows Martin Heidegger’s process of “Entbergen” or “unconcealing” as a non-instrumentalist understanding of tools and materials. This investigation takes place through the de- sign of a children’s theatre in South Africa where material innovation for architectural components is needed. The research studies vernacu- lar African patterns and their inherent behaviour when transferred to materials. The transference of pattern systems to architectural proto- types is discussed alongside the discussion of their technical and ar- chitectural performance criteria. Following Heidegger’s theory of “Entbergen” (“unconcealing”) the paper will demonstrate how making in this methodology becomes an “unconcealing”, which includes both digital and analogue means, linking the four causalities - causa mate- rialis, causa formalis, causa finalis, and causa efficiens – through the agency of material within an integrated process between all four caus- es. Making becomes a process in which form is generated through in- terventions within fields of forces and currents of materials, taking cause and agency into account, and standing in opposition to methods that are defined by a premeditated notion of an ideal outcome.

summary This study aims to better ascertain the influence that urbanistic parameters exert on the production of solar photovoltaic energy regarding different contexts in the city. Modifications implemented between the years of 2012 and 2016, especially on variables such as Maximum Lot Coverage, Floor Area Ratio, and Setbacks, have been evaluated through virtual models that cover areas in three different city districts. Amongst other implications, an increase in the area occupied by the buildings, as well as a decrease in the distance between them, occurred, causing more mutual shading and the loss of the photovoltaic potential associated with the building envelope.

summary Este artigo descreve o projeto numa comunidade vulnerável em Brasília. Objetivou-se desenvolver e implantar um makerspace focado no protagonismo social, inicialmente proporcionado pelo acesso a impressoras 3D. A metodologia utilizada teve duas etapas: a etnografia e o design participativo escandinavo. Por meio dos dados obtidos prototipou-se a realidade local e entendeu-se a importância do makerspace para o empoderamento. As impressoras 3D foram desenvolvidas utilizando sucata eletrônica. A integraç?o dos habitantes no espaço e as discuss?es fora do espaço, que s?o promovidas pelo acesso e utilizaç?o da tecnologia, ressaltam a importância dos makerspaces na consolidaç?o da identidade e o empoderamento comunitário.

summary The past years have seen significant developments in the area of robotic design interfaces. Building upon visual programming environments, these interfaces now allow the creative industry to de- fine even complex fabrication processes in an easy, accessible way, while providing instant, production-immanent feedback. However, while these software tools greatly speed up the programming of robot- ic arms, many processes are still inherently slow: Subtractive process- es need to remove a large amount of material with comparably small tools, while additive processes are limited by the speed of the extruder and the properties of the extruded material. In this research we present a new method for incrementally shaping transparent polymer materi- als with a robotic arm, without requiring heat or dies for deep- drawing, thus allowing us to rapidly fabricate individual panels within a minimum of time.

summary This paper seeks to explore the process of generating visual representations from building information models in a formal way. Based on the reference model of the visualization pipeline a more advanced model is developed which allows for the consideration of different levels of detail in all stages of the visualization pipeline. The construction of complex visualizations from simpler building blocks is complemented by the successive subdivision of building information to generate the partial visualizations from. The contributions of this paper are threefold. First, it provides a formal model for information models, for visualization models and for the connection between the two sides expressed with mathematical logic. Second, it generalizes the idea of construction multimodels and utilizes it in a new way in the context of visualizations. Third, it connects the multimodel concept as a model of complex information models to the visualization pipeline as a model of the visualization process.

summary Here we discuss the technological and theoretical issues that conform the restructuring proposal of the Computer Laboratory of Escola de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da UFMG, reconfiguring it in what we call “Meta-Lab”: a space composed of programmable modules that make up the so called Sistema Hidra(!), a system structured in three levels (sensory, processor and actuator level) which receives environmental information via sensors, processes these information and changes the environment using actuators. We will address in more detail the processing level, a fundamental layer for enabling the implementation of “interactive permanency” through continuous reprogramming of interactions in Meta-Lab.

summary Digital fabrication processes and technologies are becom- ing an essential part of the modern product manufacturing. As the use of 3D printing grows, potential applications into large scale processes are emerging. The combined methods of computational design and robotic fabrication have demonstrated potential to expand architectur- al design. However, factors such as material use, energy demands, du- rability, GHG emissions and waste production must be recognized as the priorities over the entire life of any architectural project. Given the recent developments at architecture scale, this study aims to investi- gate the environmental consequences and opportunities of digital fab- rication in construction. This paper presents two case studies of classic building elements digitally fabricated. In each case study, the projects were assessed according to the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) frame- work and compared with conventional construction with similar func- tion. The analysis highlighted the importance of material-efficient de- sign to achieve high environmental benefits in digitally fabricated architecture. The knowledge established in this research should be di- rected to the development of guidelines that help designers to make more sustainable choices in the implementation of digital fabrication in architecture and construction.

summary This article analyses some of the proposals produced in the late 1970´s by the American contemporary artist Dan Graham, in which he uses technical means to investigate the audience´s perception and behavior. The questions raised highlight reciprocity phenomena and identity constructions – factors that affect our experience and behavior in contemporary cities daily life. All of these issues derive from Graham´s investigations of the main information and communication technologies (media) produced at that time, and which continue to offer reflections on current relationship between technical means and the subject – that is, his/her condition as audience, observer, spectator or user.

summary This paper reports the responsive environments and the Theory of Ludification towards the interaction design using the structure of games on feedback process. It presents an interaction classification that can be reactive, responsive and dialogical based on authors related to cybernetics studies. It exposes the need for rationality in environments as an intrinsic and necessary condition for achieving the interaction. It also uses dialogue and game Vilém Flusser’s concepts to support this argument. Thus, it broadens the contemporary architectural discussion that encompassing communication processes that do not recognize the physical boundaries of the buildings.

summary This paper presents and discusses the relationship between the concepts of Smart Cities and City Information Modeling (CIM). It conveys the notion that these are complementary and not competing concepts, as one might think at first glance. On the other hand, the paper demonstrates the importance of these concepts to overcome the challenges to the cities of the 21st century, from findings contained in official documents published by the United Nations (UN), to analyze the growth of world population and the emergence of new cities to house population groups. Finally, this paper argues that the CIM with an inducing factor for the Smart City is an important resource to help improve the quality of life in cities.

summary The gradual rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing visibility among many research disciplines affected Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). Architectural deep learning (DL) approaches are being developed and published on a regular basis, such as retrieval (Sharma et al. 2017) or design style manipulation (Newton 2019; Silvestre et al. 2016). However, there seems to be no method to evaluate highly constrained spatial configurations for specific architectural domains (such as housing or office buildings) based on basic architectural principles and everyday practices. This paper introduces an automatic constraint-based consistency checker to evaluate the coherency of semantic spatial configurations of housing construction using a small set of design principles to evaluate our DL approaches. The consistency checker informs about the overall performance of a spatial configuration followed by whether it is open/closed and the constraints it didn't satisfy. This paper deals with the relation of spaces processed as mathematically formalized graphs contrary to existing model checking software like Solibri.

summary This paper expounds the teaching strategies used to introduce architecture students in the craft of design in the course Taller de Proyecto 1. These strategies are based on experiential mappings constructed from different digital resources allowing constantly confront design with real life, in order to maintain, throughout the process, a sensitive and precise relationship between reality and experience. It concludes that these methodologies strengthen the autonomy of students, developing a valuable reconnection with the way they look and transform the world, validating the premise that the act of design is an innate human act and not necessarily an erudite one.

summary The representational and visual aspects of architectural de- sign education cause certain pedagogical stresses in student’s capaci- ties to learn how to code, and this paper will serve as a critique of the current state of algorithmic pedagogy in architectural education. The paper will suggest that algorithmic curriculum should not frame code as ‘a design tool’, but as something to be designed in its own right; the writing of the code is the ‘design brief’ itself and not something addi- tional to an architectural design brief. The paper will argue for an ar- chitecture-less educational environment that focuses on computational competencies such as logic, loops and lists along with building a strong analytical basis for students’ understanding of programming and digital geometries.
