summary Since the emergence of the concept of user-generated content websites – Web 2.0, Internet communications have developed as a powerful personal and social phenomenon. Many Internet applications have become partially or entirely related to the concept of social network; and cyberspace has become a space about ‘us’ not ‘where’ we are. This paper investigates the theoretical grounds of the effect of cyber experience on changing the individuals’ uses of the public spaces, and sustaining this change through maintaining the ties and reciprocal influence between actions in physical and cyber spaces. It aims at examining the impact of cyber territories on the perception, definition and effectiveness of personal space within different circumstances; and its role in changing the uses of spaces where people used to act habitually. The personal space, here, will be represented as the core of both: change and consistency – the space of bridging the reciprocal effect of cyber and physical counterparts, which is transformed through the experience of physical events mediated into the cyberspace. The paper is part of a study which looks at the case of Tahrir Square during the Egyptian political movement in 2011. We will compare the activists’ actions and practices in the Square during different events of non-routine use of the square and its surroundings. The case study will show the level of consistency in the features of the produced personal space within different waves of the revolutionary actions for all that different circumstances, motivations and results.

summary The paper describes an iterated system, which explores the concept of a surveying, deploying, self-assembling robotic swarm system within an extreme environment, in a virtual robotics platform named VREP. The pure geometries that are the basis of this species, through study of locomotion in Fauna and energy transformations, produce several iterations of the proposed robot. The created species are used to generate a process in which the robotic swarms are able to make initial scans of landscapes using a series of visual and proximity sensors attached to each exposed face, in order to determine proper deployment zones for the making of a research facility. The explorations in locomotion and transfer of potential to kinetic energy would allow the geometrically pure robot to hop, flap, walk, flip or turn in order to move to achieve the desired location.

summary The countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council have, in recent years, undertaken several initiatives to make sustainability central to their urban agendas. This research aims to operationalize the concept of sustainable development – environmental, economic and socio-cultural – in the region, and develop parameters that define it. Using native neighborhoods in Abu Dhabi as a case study, it focuses on the development process of a computational toolkit which has two major components – a quantitative toolkit which contains modules for simulation of aspects of environmental and economic sustainability, and a spatial toolkit which contains modules for simulation of socio-spatial practices associated with the specific social and cultural context. One of the primary needs of these communities, identified through an extensive review of literature and through conversations with Emiratis, is that of visual and acoustical privacy. Privacy from neighbors and passers-by, externally, and between genders, internally within the house. Using this as a starting point, this paper describes the development process of a module that aims to measure levels of external visual privacy of surfaces at a housing plot level, from neighbors and passers-by. The first section of the paper establishes the context of the research. The second section focuses on describing the process of modeling built form and testing it for visibility and thus, privacy.

summary This study presents preliminary results of an experiment of production and use of tactile models to explain the form of an architectural space for visually impaired people. As part of a literature review, it explores the digital manufacturing technologies such as laser cutting and 3D printing to generate representations. The review uses a case study representing a house-museum and the experiments are based on a partnership with a school for a visually impaired people. The collaborative process has contributed to learning and explanation of multi-sensory characteristics of the constructed spaces and reinforced the need for a revision of educational processes for the architectural project regarding the habit of prioritizing essentially the aesthetic and visual aspects. The universal design concept gives grounds for each action.

summary This paper describes the development of an Intelligent Adaptive Control (IAC) framework that uses machine learning to integrate responsive passive conditioning at the envelope into a building’s comprehensive conventional environmental control system. Initial results show that by leveraging adaptive computational control to orchestrate the building’s mechanical and passive systems together, there exists a demonstrably greater potential to maximize energy efficiency than can be gained by focusing on either system individually, while the addition of more passive conditioning strategies significantly increase human comfort, health and wellness building-wide. Implicitly, this project suggests that, given the development and ever increasing adoption of building automation systems, a significant new site for computational design in architecture is expanding within the post-occupancy operation of a building, in contrast to architects’ traditional focus on the building’s initial design. Through the development of an experimental framework that includes physical material testing linked to computational simulation, this project begins to describe a set of tools and procedures by which architects might better conceptualize, visualize, and experiment with the design of adaptive building envelopes. This process allows designers to ultimately engage in the opportunities presented by active systems that govern the daily interactions between a building, its inhabitants, and their environment long after construction is completed. Adaptive material assemblies at the envelope are given special attention since it is here that a building’s performance and urban expression are most closely intertwined.

summary The Mesopotamian Marshlands form one of the first landscapes where people started to transform and manipulate the natural environment in order to sustain human habitation. For thousands of years, people have transformed natural ecosystems into agricultural fields, residential clusters and other agglomerated environments to sustain long-term settlement. In this way, the development of human society has been intricately linked to the extraction, processing and consumption of natural resources. The Mesopotamian Marshlands, located in one of the hottest and most arid areas on the planet, formed a unique wetlands ecosystem, which apart from millions of people, sustained a very high number of wildlife and endemic species. Several historical, political, social and climatic changes, which densely occurred during the past century, completely destroyed the unique civilisation of the area, made all the wild flora and fauna disappear and forced hundreds of thousands of people to migrate. During the last decade, many efforts have been made to restore the marshlands. However, these efforts are lacking a comprehensive design strategy, coherent goals and deep understanding of the complex current geopolitical situation, making the restoration process an extremely difficult task. This work aims at providing strategies for recovering the Mesopotamian Marshlands, organising productive functions in order to sustain the local population and design a new inhabitation model, using advanced computational tools while taking into account the extreme climatic conditions and several unique cultural aspects. Part of the aim of this work is to advance the use of computation and explore the opportunities that digital tools afford in helping find solutions to complex design problems where various design variables need to be coordinated to satisfy the design goals. Today, advanced computation enables designers to use population consumption demands, ecological processes and environmental inputs as design parameters to develop more robust and resilient regional planning strategies. This work has the double aim of first, presenting a framework for re-inhabiting the Marshlands of Mesopotamia. Second, the work suggests a design methodology based on computer-aided design for developing and organising productive functions and patterns of human occupation in wetland environments.

summary The current concept of architectural design education in most schools of architecture in Jordan is a blend between manual pen drafting and digital approaches. However, the disconnection between these two methods has resulted in the students' failure to transfer skills learnt through traditional methods to the digital method of CAD. The objective of this study is twofold: to first compare students’ attitudes toward using both methods and to then assess the impact of CAD use on the quality of architectural design. An open-ended questionnaire was designed to measure variables related to students’ preferences toward CAD and traditional methods. The quality of sixty graduation projects at three Jordanian universities was investigated. The results appear to support the assumption that CAD tools are used largely as visual means and thereby cause a marked decline in design quality. These findings call for a reconsideration of the status quo and a rethinking of perhaps the entire architectural educational model.

summary Through space we can read the acts and the daily activities of human being and, we can also understand different interactions within any social unit. This paper explain how specially the space type can interpret why the human being derives to a negative behavior like "Crime". So, in this study we adopt the visibility approach which is developed by the laboratory of space syntax (UCL), and which makes a sense for the link between the space design and its use and its positive or negative social consequences in the future. Then, the purpose of this paper is to present the importance of the use of visibility map which can also be an outlook approach for detecting potential hot-spots in urban planning designs specially of new cities, for avoiding the negative using of urban spaces like "Crime" in the future. The case of study is the new city of Ali Mendjeli (Constantine - Algeria), the capital of the East of Algeria known by a very fast demographic and urban growth. After analyzing a central urban neighborhood of this city using Depthmap, we found thirty-four hot-spots which can be appropriate spaces for the exercise of crime in the future, and we found that this point was downplayed in the urban planning designs before the realization of Ali Mendjeli new city.

summary Every city has under utilized spaces that create a series of serious negative effects. Waiting for major interventions, those spaces can be reactivated and revitalized with soft temporary projects: micro interventions that light up the attention, give new meaning and add a new reading to abandoned spaces. We can call this kind of operations "plug-in design", inheriting the term from computer architecture: interventions which aim to involve the citizens and activate the environment, engage multiple catalyst processes and civil actions. Plug-in design interventions are by all meanings experimental, they seek for interaction with the users, locally and globally. Information Technology - with its parametric and site-specific capabilities and interactive features - can be instrumental to create such designs and generate a new consciousness of the existing environment. With this paper we will illustrate how two low-budget interventions have re-activated a forgotten public space. Parametric design with a specific script allowing site-specific design, materials and structure optimization and a series of interactive features, will be presented through Reciprocal 1.0 and Reciprocal 2.0 projects which have been built in 2016 in Italy by the nITro group.

summary This research documents our initial experiences of using a new type of collaborative, industrial robot in the area of architecture, design, and construction. The KUKA LBR-iiwa differs from common robotic configurations in that it uses seven axes with integrated force-torque sensors and can be programmed in the Java programming language. Its force-sensitivity makes it safe to interact with, but also enables entirely new applications that use hand-guiding and utilize the force-sensors to compensate for high tolerances on building sites, similar to how we manually approach assembly tasks. Especially for the creative industry, the Java programming opens up completely new applications that would have previously required complex bus systems or industrial data interfaces. We will present a series of realized projects that showcase some of the potential of this new type of collaborative, safe robot, and discuss the advantages and limitations of the robotic system.

summary The term "Parametricism" widespread mainly by Patrick Schumacher (Schumacher, 2008) is worthy of study. Developing the concept of Human Oriented Parametric Architecture, the need of implementing time as the lost parameter in current adaptive design techniques will be discussed. Morphogenetic processes ideas will be discussed through the principle of an adaptable membrane as a case study. A model implementing a unique Arduino[i] on the façade will control its patterns performance through an Artificial Neural Network that will understand the kind of scenario the building is in, activating a Genetic Algorithm that will optimize the insulation performance of the ETFE pillows. The system will work with a global behavior for façade pattern performance and with a local one for each pillow, giving the option of individual sun-shading control. Machine learning implementation will give the façade the possibility to learn from the efficacy of its decisions through time, eliminating the need of a general on-off behavior.

summary This article delineates the process of developing the project "Urbanimals" - an interactive installation designed and realised in Bristol, UK, in 2015. As the case study research, it draws attention to the difficulties in designing interactive structures in urban spaces - from an architects' idea to a construction stage. There are four areas that are being investigated: (1) Modelling interactions, (2) Negotiating locations and logistics, (3) Developing hardware and (4) Performing the on-site observations. The project draws from the idea of Smart City (SC) as the concept of the urban environment with a certain level of responsiveness through implementing a technology-driven matter that expands city offer perceivable, but gentle and not hindering way. It highlights the possible applications of projection technology and the utilisation of the 3D modelling software which provides complex tools for creating animations, movements and interactions with future users. The article gives clues how to design more engaging interactions and how to deal with implementing them in public realm.

summary The Egyptian government resorts to prototype housing for low-income citizens to meet the growing demand of the housing market. The problem with the prototype is that it does not meet specific needs. Consequently, users make modifications to the prototype without professional intervention because of the high cost. This paper discusses an automatic multi-stories space planning tool that helps low-income citizens to modify their prototype housing provided by the government. Social, spatial and functional design aspects were set in the original design prototype by an architect. The proposed tool simulates spaces spatial locations in the original design by simulating the analogy of mechanical springs through an interactive simulation of a parametric model. The authors developed the used algorithm in the generative design tool Grasshopper and the live physics engine Kangaroo, both working within the Rhino 3D environment. The algorithm has two versions, one-floor level version and two floors version targeting the wealthier users. Results indicate that this tool integrates with the exploratory nature of the design process even for non-professional users. The authors designed a tool that will help the users to study the effect of the desired modifications against the originally provided prototype, it also makes it easier for users to express their requirements to a professional designer, conserving time and financial cost.

summary The objective of this research project is to simulate and evaluate the effect of movement velocity and cognitive abilities on the visual perception of three groups of urban users: pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers.The simulation and analysis is based on the 3D Dynamic Visual Analysis (DVA) (Fisher-Gewirtzman, 2017). This visibility analysis model was developed in the Rhinoceros and Grasshopper software environments and is based on the conceptual model presented in Fisher-Gewirtzman (2016): a 3D Line of Sight (LOS) visibility analysis, taking into account the integrated effect of the 3D geometry of the environment and the variant elements of the view (such as the sky, trees and vegetation, buildings and building types, roads, water etc.). In this paper, the current advancement of the existing model considers the visual perception of human users employing three types of movement in the urban environment--pedestrians, cyclists and drivers--is explored.We expect this research project to exemplify the contribution of such a quantification and evaluation model to evaluating existing urban structures, and for supporting future human perception-based urban design processes.

summary The task of geography is to establish a critical system which embraces the phenomenology of space in order to grasp all of its meaning in the varied terrestrial scene (Sauer 1925). Brownfields are a global geographic concern that have been considerably researched within the universal discourse. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and its tools have been widely used to enhance and optimize urban plans during both design and implementation phases. Nonetheless, the connection between the two is often broken. While greenfield development enjoys the employment and implementation of a wide array of CAD tools, brownfield redevelopment projects are still struggling with traditional planning and management methods. Looking at the association between sustainable brownfield redevelopment and the optimization of CAD tools and software in the city of Amman, Jordan, the paper attempts to shed light on the unfulfilled potentials of advancement the spatial tools have to offer to the ongoing quest for sustainable urban development on the local scale and the global debate around the urban paradox on the wider scheme. Using empirical data collected and processed in response to the problem posed, the results indicate a CAD-based model could streamline sustainable brownfield development and save substantial time and resources which would otherwise be required using traditional methods. The paper therefore argues that the need for a comprehensive computer aided intervention for the development and management of marginal and overlooked geographies of brownfields in the city of Amman is long overdue.

summary Evolutionary methods with artificial selection have been shown to be an effective human-computer technique for exploring design spaces with unknown goals. This paper investigates an interactive evolution of visual programs currently used in popular parametric modelling software. Although parametric models provide a useful cognitive artifact for designers to interact with, they are often bound by their topological structure with the designer left to adjusting (or optimising) metric variables as part of a design search. By allowing the topological structure of the graph to be evolved as well as the parameters, artificial selection can be employed to explore a wider design space more suited to the early design stage.

summary While education programs are generally defined in terms of learning outcomes known as knowledge, skills and attitudes, it is not always obvious how attitudes are to be gained. This study focuses on the formation of attitudes of accountability and sharing of knowledge in computational approaches to basic design education. We posit that computational thinking, even without computers, is supportive of both the reflective practice and the learning of such values in design education. We report on comparatively observed collaborative design processes of first year architecture students who externalized their thought processes through visual rules. While a reflection-in-action stage helps in learning the know-how, a second reflection on reflection-in-action deepens the understanding and initiates habits for how to think and act within and beyond the design domain, leading to attitude formation.

summary Over the last 5 years, large-scale ‘data dumps’ of architectural production have been made available online through project-specific websites (mainly competitions) and architectural aggregation/dissemination sites like Architizer, Suckerpunch, and Archinect. This reinforces the broader context of Ubiquitous Simultaneity, in which large amounts of data are continuously updated and easily accessed through a dizzying array of mobile devices. This condition is being exploited by sports leagues and financial speculators through the development of tools that collect, visualize, and analyze historical data for the purpose of producing speculative predictive simulations that could lead to strategies for enhanced performance. We explore the development of a workflow for deploying computer vision, SIFT algorithms, image aggregation, and heteromorphic deformation as a design strategy. These techniques have all been developed separately for various applications and here we combine them in such a way as to allow for the embedding of the historical and speculative artifacts of architectural production into newly formed three-dimensional architectural bodies. This work builds on past research, which resulted in a more two-dimensional image-based mapping and translation process found in existing imaging protocols for projects like Google Earth, and transitions towards the production of data-rich formal assemblies. Outliers and concentrations of visual data are exploited as a means to encourage innovation within the production of architecture.

summary The use of computational formats and digital tools includ- ing machine fabrication by indigenous people worldwide to augment traditional practices and material culture is becoming more and more commonplace. However within the practice of architecture while there are indigenous architectural practitioners utilizing digital tools, it is unclear as to whether there is motivation to implement traditional in- digenous knowledge in conjunction with these computational instru- ments and methodologies. This paper explores how the tools might be used to investigate the potential for indigenous development, cultural empowerment and innovation. It also describes a general methodology whereby capacity can be shared between academia and indigenous groups to foster new knowledge through a recently implemented in- digenous focused design research entity, SITUA. The importance and significant research potential of what we term 'domain based research' is reinforced through the exploration of emergent materials and build- ing systems located within specific tribal domains. A recent project employing 3D clay extrusion printing is used to illustrate this ap- proach.
