summary The integration of optimization algorithms and building performance simulation tools make it possible to carry out performa- tive design or performance-driven design, which aims to guide the de- sign synthesis process of the simulation results to continuously im- prove the design. However, the associated research work of wind- related building performance is still deficient, resulting from lack of applicable interface and the time consumption. Meanwhile, in the in- dustrial design realm, the aero-dynamics or fluid-dynamics behaviour of the production under development has been vastly analysed and op- timized based on the multi-discipline optimization (MDO) techniques. Owing to offering numerous built-in interface and integrated optimi- zation algorithm, MDO application software has begun to be used in building optimization design with the complex relationship between various objectives. With the advantage of MDO tools and aimed to provide an efficient optimization approach from the perspective of ar- chitect, this paper proposes a wind-related building performance op- timization design system integrating Rhinoceros and Fluent based on iSIGHT - a MDO application software. In addition, the lighting per- formance is considered in this research as well for implementing the multi-objective optimization. Two case studies of tall building optimi- zation design based on varied generative approaches are introduced to investigate the effect and efficiency of this system.

summary For several years great effort has been devoted to the study of Architectural Design Optimization (ADO). However, although in the recent years ADO has attracted much attention from academia, optimization methods and tools have had a limited influence on the architectural profession. The aim of the study is to reveal users' expectations from the optimization tools and define limitations preventing wide-spread adaptation of the optimization solvers in the architectural practice. The paper presents the results of the survey "Optimization in the architectural practice" conducted between December 2015 and February 2016 on 165 architectural trainees and practising architects from 34 countries. The results show that there is a need for an interactive multi-objective optimization tool, as 78% respondents declared that a multi-objective optimization is more necessary in their practice than a single objective one and 91% of them acknowledged the need for choice of promising solutions during optimization process. Finally, it has been found that daylight, structure and geometry are three top factors which architects are interested in optimizing.

summary The Egyptian government resorts to prototype housing for low-income citizens to meet the growing demand of the housing market. The problem with the prototype is that it does not meet specific needs. Consequently, users make modifications to the prototype without professional intervention because of the high cost. This paper discusses an automatic multi-stories space planning tool that helps low-income citizens to modify their prototype housing provided by the government. Social, spatial and functional design aspects were set in the original design prototype by an architect. The proposed tool simulates spaces spatial locations in the original design by simulating the analogy of mechanical springs through an interactive simulation of a parametric model. The authors developed the used algorithm in the generative design tool Grasshopper and the live physics engine Kangaroo, both working within the Rhino 3D environment. The algorithm has two versions, one-floor level version and two floors version targeting the wealthier users. Results indicate that this tool integrates with the exploratory nature of the design process even for non-professional users. The authors designed a tool that will help the users to study the effect of the desired modifications against the originally provided prototype, it also makes it easier for users to express their requirements to a professional designer, conserving time and financial cost.

summary For contemporary design practices, there still remains a disconnect between design tools used for early stage design exploration and performance analysis, and those used for fabrication and construction of complex tectonic architectural systems. The research brings forward downstream fabrication constraints into the up-stream design exploration and design decision making. This paper addresses the issues of developing an integrated digital design work-flow and details a research framework for the incorporation of environmental performance into a robotic fabrication for early stage design exploration and generation of intricate and complex alternative façade designs. The method allows the user to import a design surface, define design parameters, set a number of environmental performance objectives, and then simulate and select a robotic construction strategy. Based on these inputs, design alternatives are generated and evaluated in terms of their performance criteria in consideration of their robotically simulated constructability. In order to validate the proposed framework, an experimental case study of office building façade designs that are generatively created from a multi-agent system for design methodology is design explored and evaluated. Initial results define a heuristic function for improving simulated robotic constructability and illustrate the functionality of our prototype. Project limitations and future research steps are then discussed.

summary Strategies for optimisation in design normatively assume an artefact end-point, disallowing continuous architecture that engages living systems, dynamic behaviour, and complex systems. In our Flora Robotica investigations of symbiotic plant-robot bio-hybrids, we re- quire computational tools and strategies that help us evaluate designed behaviours, rather than discrete ‘things’. In this paper, we present our strategy of using embodied interaction to facilitate engagement with a scenario’s full scope of possible states and their continuous changes over time. We detail the ways in which this approach to time- continuous optimisation can be broadly impactful for decision- making, especially in architectural systems that aspire to effective dealings with control flows and lifecycle management.

title Design optimization and robotic fabrication of tensile mesh structures: The development and simulation of a custom-made end-effector tool

summary This article presents an ongoing research, aiming to introduce a fabrication procedure for the development of tensile mesh systems. The purpose of current methodology is to establish an integrated approach that combines digital form- finding and robotic manufacturing processes by extracting data and information derived through elastic material behavior for physical implementation. This aspires to extend the capacity of robotically driven mechanisms to the fabrication of complex tensile structures and, at the same time, to reduce the defects that might occur due to the deformation of the elastic material. In this article, emphasis is given to the development of a custom-made end-effector tool, which is responsible to add elastic threads and create connections in the form of nodes. Based on additive fabrication logic, this process suggests the development of physical prototypes through a design optimization and tool-path verification.

summary This article focuses on the use of computational tools to provide dynamic assessment and optimized arrangements while planning and discussing interventions in urban areas. The objective is to address the use of algorithmic systems for generating and evaluating urban morphologies guided by Transit-Oriented Development principles. Transit- Oriented Development is an urban development model that considers geometric and measurable parameters for designing sustainable cities. It advocates compact mixed-use neighborhoods within walking distance to a variety of transportation options and amenities, seeking to result in optimized infrastructure provision and energy-efficient low- carbon districts. This article presents algorithmic experiments for the optimization of a rapid transit district, through its urban morphology and services’ location, providing an accurate Transit-Oriented Development modeling. The main findings of this study highlight that the combination of Transit-Oriented Development and algorithmic–parametric tools has the potential to significantly contribute to a process of responsible planning and, ultimately, to mitigate global warming.

summary Weather data plays an important role for energy perfor- mance assessment in the design of buildings and urban environments. Many researches have been carried out to generate and analyse vari- ous weather files for different simulation platforms. However, investi- gations have been lacking in the development of weather files that ac- count for urban heat island (UHI) problems. As a result of global warming and the complexity of the urban environment, the weather file for a modern city cannot be simply based on climate information from 20 years ago. The objective of this research is to demonstrate a method for creating different micro-scale typical meteorological year (TMY) weather files based on different urban texture values. This re- search includes three steps: 1) Recent years weather data is obtained. 2) Considering the UHI impact, a series of new TMY weather files are generated for different micro-scale areas in Singapore based on rele- vant urban texture variables. 3) A comparison of the results shows that there is a big difference between the new and the old TMY. The tem- perature of the new TMY is 1-2°C higher, while the solar radiation is lower than the original TMY data. Hence the new weather files will be more credible than the original TMY for energy performance simula- tion in the design process.

summary A building façade plays an important role of reducing artificial lighting by introducing natural light into the interior space. A majority of research and current technology heavily focuses on the optimization of window properties such as the size, location, and glazing with the consideration of external shading device as well as the building wall in order to obtain appropriate natural lit space. In the present work, we propose a 3-dimensional approach that can explore the trade-offs between two objectives, daylight performance and electricity generation, by means of paramedic modeling and multi-objective optimization algorithm. The case study was simulated under the environmental setting of the geographical location of Incheon, Korea without any urban context. Using the proposed methods, 50 pareto-front optimal solutions were derived and investigated based on the achieved daylighting and generated electricity.

summary This article describes the methods of an inclusive design project developed by FACAMP’s NIEDA , as demanded by the UNICAMP Science Museum (Brazil). The objective was to create a multi-sensorial interface that would be capable of describing the process of energy generation and distribution in a hydro-power plant. It began with a scheme based on images and a narration was built out of audible and tactile systems so that it would be comprehensible for the blind public as well, without compromising the aesthetic and informative aspects. It also reveals the challenge of combining the use of multiple technological resources, such as 3D printing and laser cutting.

summary Black-box optimization methods play an important role in automated design space exploration, but to-date have not been sys- tematically compared on problems from architectural design optimiza- tion. This paper presents a quantitative comparison of the three major types of black-box optimization: metaheuristics, direct search, and model-based methods. We compare the performance of one repre- sentative algorithm of each type (including a genetic algorithm) on four performance-based design problems of varying complexity and characteristics. Our results show that metaheuristics are greatly out- performed whenever evaluating tens of thousands of design candi- dates is not an option, and suggest direct search and model-based methods as viable and more efficient alternatives.

summary Though robotic 3D printing technology is currently undergoing rapid development, most of the research and experiments are still based on a bottom up layering process. This paper addresses long term research into a robotic 3D printed polygon mesh whose struts are directly built up and joined together as rapidly generated physical wireframes. This paper presents a novel “multi-threaded” robotic extruder, as well as a technical strategy to create a “printable” polygon mesh that is collision-free during robotic operation. Compared to standard 3D printing, architectural applications demand much larger dimensions at human scale, geometrically lower resolution and faster production speed. Taking these features into consideration, 3D printed frameworks have huge potential in the building industry by combining robot arm technology together with FDM 3D printing technology. Currently, this methodology of rapid prototyping could potentially be applied on pre-fabricated building components, especially ones with uniform parabolic features. Owing to the mechanical features of the robot arm, the most crucial challenge of this research is the consistency of non-stop automated control. Here, an algorithm is employed not only to predict and solve problems, but also to optimize for a highly efficient construction process in coordination of the robotic 3D printing system. Since every stroke of the wireframe contains many parameters and calculations in order to reflect its native organization and structure, this robotic 3D printing process requires processing an intensive amount of data in the back stage.

summary This paper investigates the potential of a digital geometry system to integrate structural performance-based design and robotic fabrication in the scenario of building a large-scale non-uniform timber shell. It argues that a synthesis of multi-objective optimization, design and construction phases is required in the realization of timber shell construction in architecture practice in order to fulfill the demands of building regulation. Confronting the structural challenge of the non-uniform shell, a digital geometry system correlates all the three phases by translating geometrical information between them. First, a series of structural simulations and experimentations with different objectives are executed to inform the particular shape and tectonic details of each shell component based on its local condition in the geometrical system. Then, controlled by the geometrical system, a hybrid process of different digital fabrication technologies, including a customized robotic timber mill, is established to enable the manufacture of the heterogeneous shell components. Ultimately, the Timber Structure Enterprise Pavilion as the demonstration and evaluation of this method is fabricated and assembled on site through a notational system to indicate the applicability of this research in practical scenarios.

summary This paper describes the process of designing a prototype for a soft responsive system for a kinetic building facade. The prototype uses lightweight materials and mechanisms to generate a building facade skin that is both soft (less dependent on hard mechanical systems) and responsive (dynamically and simultaneously adapting to spatial and environmental conditions). By combining concepts stemming from both tensegrity structures and folding mechanisms, we develop a prototype that changes dynamically to produce varying facade patterns and perforations based on sensor-network data and feedback. We use radiation sensors and shape memory alloys to control the prototype mechanism and allow for the required parametric adaptation. Based on the data from the radiation sensors, the lengths of the shape memory alloys are altered using electric wires and are parametrically linked to the input data. The transformation in the resulting overall surface is directly linked to the desired levels of daylighting and solar exposure. We conclude with directions for future research, including full scale testing, advanced simulation, and multi-objective optimization.

summary The current concept of architectural design education in most schools of architecture in Jordan is a blend between manual pen drafting and digital approaches. However, the disconnection between these two methods has resulted in the students' failure to transfer skills learnt through traditional methods to the digital method of CAD. The objective of this study is twofold: to first compare students’ attitudes toward using both methods and to then assess the impact of CAD use on the quality of architectural design. An open-ended questionnaire was designed to measure variables related to students’ preferences toward CAD and traditional methods. The quality of sixty graduation projects at three Jordanian universities was investigated. The results appear to support the assumption that CAD tools are used largely as visual means and thereby cause a marked decline in design quality. These findings call for a reconsideration of the status quo and a rethinking of perhaps the entire architectural educational model.

summary The research presented here tests the capacity of artificial-neural-network (ANN) based multi-agent systems to be implemented in architectural design processes. Artificial Intelligence algorithms allow for a new approach to design, taking advantage of its generic functioning to produce meaningful outcomes. Experimentation within this project is based on Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs) and takes advantage of its behavior in topology to produce architectural geometry. SOMs as full stochastic processes involve randomness, uncertainty and unpredictability as key features to deal with during the design process. Following this behavior, SOMs are used to transmit information, which, instead of being copied, is reproduced after a learning (training) process. Pre-existent architectural objects are taken as learning models as they have been considered masterpieces. In this context, by defining the SOM input set, masterpieces become measurement elements and can be used to set a distance to the new element position in a comparatistic space. The characteristics of masterpieces get embedded within the code and are transmitted to 3D objects. SOM produced objects from a population with shared characteristics where the masterpiece position is its probabilistic center point.

summary Building Performance simulation is escalating towards design optimization worldwide utilizing computational and advanced tools. Egypt has its plan and agenda to adopt new technologies to mitigate energy consumption through various sectors. Energy consumption includes electricity, crude oil, it encompasses renewable and non-renewable energy consumption. Egypt Electricity (EE) consumption by sector percentages is residential (47%), industrial (25%) and commercial (12%), with the remainder used by government, agriculture, public lighting and public utilities (4%). Electricity building consumption has many divisions includes HVAC systems, lighting, Computers and Electronics and others. Lighting share of electricity consumption can vary from 11 to 15 percent in mixed buildings as in our case study which definitely less that the amount used for HVAC loads. This research aims at utilizing shape morphogenesis on facades using geometric shape grammar to enhance daylighting while blocking longwave radiations causing heat stress. Mixed-use building operates in daytime more than night which emphasizes the objective of this study. Results evaluation is referenced to LEED v4.1 and ASHRAE 90.1-2016 window-to-wall ratio calibration and massive wall description. Enhancing Geo-morph rule is to guarantee flexibility due to the rotation of sun path annually with different azimuth and altitude angles and follow LEED V4.1 enhancements of opaque wall percent for building envelope.

summary Complex forms and structures have always been highly valued in architecture, even much before the development of computers. Many architects and engineers have strived to develop structures that look very complex but at the same time are relatively simple to understand, calculate and build. A good example of this approach is the Beijing National Aquatics Centre design for the 2008 Olympic Games, also known as the Water Cube. This paper presents a proposal for a structural variance-producing engine using cellular automata (CA) techniques to produce complex structures based on Weaire-Phelan geometry. In other words, this research evaluates how generative and parametric design can be integrated with structural performance in order to enhance design flexibility and control in different stages of the design process. The method we propose was built in three groups of procedures: 1) we developed a method to generate several fits for the two Weaire-Phelan polyhedrons using CA computation techniques; 2) through the finite elements method, we codify the structural analysis outcomes to use them as inputs for the CA algorithm; 3) evaluation: we propose a framework to compare how the final outcomes deviate for the good solutions in terms of structural performance and rationalization of components. We are interested in knowing how the combination of the procedures could contribute to produce complex structures that are at the same time certain rational. The system developed allows the structural analysis of structured automatically generated by a generative system. However, some efficient solutions from the structural performance point of view do not necessarily represent a rational solution from the feasibility aspects.

summary This study investigates the relationships of field observa- tion, multi-agent simulation and space-syntax theory in spatial config- uration for developing design strategy for a case study, a tourist hub area in Musi Riverside, Palembang. Having such potential advantage and to tackle existing social and urban issues, our study developed a design approach based on multi-agent simulation enhanced by space syntax theory. The goal of this study is a deep understanding of multi agent simulation through mechanism of validation using field obser- vation and by taking into account the existing urban features. The purpose is to develop design strategy of pedestrian-centric urban space to be functioned as a tourist hub based on computational modelling. Following the paths result of pedestrian flow by multi-agents simula- tion, we elaborated the analysis of facility programming by means of Space Syntax theory. It shows the ranking of facility programs based on their relative connectivity and integration. By merging this result, it assembles programs and their circulation spaces by means of compu- tational simulation. Experimenting in both fields show a novel ap- proach for pedestrian-centric design in urban scale, particularly since behavioural models rarely used in early stage of design process. It shows that multi-agent simulation should be coupled with field obser- vation.

summary Urban planning projects usually comprise a complex set of objectives that needs to be addressed by developing a number of proposals. This requires a lot of repetitive steps resulting in fewer and slowly-developed design alternatives. To address the limitations of the existing system, this research introduces the merge of associative parametric design tools with the conceptual design phase of urban planning process to propose a Parameterized Conceptual Design Phase. The developed Associative Algorithm within the proposed phase represents a computational approach that translates a site’s settings into local attractors to define urban fabric, and provide the designer with variations for optimal solutions. The Informal Settlement of Ezbet El Matar, Alexandria, is selected as the case study of this approach.
