summary Ruin has a bad name. Despite the obvious complications, failure provides a rich opportunity—how better to understand a building’s physicality than to watch it collapse? This paper offers a novel method to exploit failure through physical simulation and iterative machine learning. Using technology traditionally relegated to special effects, we can now understand collapse on a granular level: since modern-day physics engines track object-object collisions, they enable a close reading of the spatial preferences that underpin ruin. In the case of bricks, that preference is relatively simple—to fall. By idealizing bricks as rigid bodies, one can understand the effects of gravitational force on each individual brick in a masonry structure. These structures are sometimes able to ‘settle,’ resulting in a stable equilibrium state; in many cases, it means that they will simply collapse. Analyzing ruin in this way is informative, to be sure, but it proves most useful when applied in series. The evolutionary solver described in this paper closely monitors the performance of constituent bricks and ensures that the most successful structures are emulated by later generations. The tool consists of two parts: a user interface for design and the solver itself. Once the architect produces a potential design, the solver performs an evolutionary optimization; after a few hundred iterations, the end result is a structurally sound version of the unstable original. It is hoped that this hybrid of top-down and bottom-up design strategies offers an architecture that is ultimately strengthened by its contingencies.

summary The complex nature of architecture requires often planning teams with specialists from multiple disciplines. Architectural education however, addresses this interdisciplinary modus operandi rarely. This paper presents the design and production process of a real world solar façade installation realized at the University of Kassel to illustrating the potentials of such an approach. Interdisciplinary teamwork allowed students not only to solve complex problems, but also to produce knowledge and to advance into design research. Student exploration resulted in a unique fabrication technique, combining tensile fabric and resin to facilitate the fabrication of multifunctional, monocoque shells; combining all necessary technical components in a single building element. This paper discusses the success of student collaboration and teaching strategies for key parts of the design process at different scales. Moreover, it highlights the importance of physical form-finding models and an analogue - digital workflow for collaborative communication. The Free Skin project offers both insight into applied use of interdisciplinary teamwork, and a proposal for incorporating such collaboration into architectural education.

summary The timber industry is expanding, including construction wood product applications such as glue-laminated wood products (R. Sikkema et al., 2023). To boost further utilisation of engineered wood products in architecture, further development and optimisation of related tectonic systems is required. Integration of digital design technologies in this endeavour presents opportunities for a more performative and spatially diverse architecture production, even in construction contexts typified by limited means and/or resources. This paper reports on historic precedent case study research that informs an ongoing larger study focussing on novel algorithmic methods for the design and production of lightweight, large-span, catenary glulam roof structures. Given their structural operation in full tension, catenary-based roof structures substantially reduce material needs when compared with those relying on straight beams (Wong and Crolla, 2019). Yet, the manufacture of their non-standard geometries typically requires costly bespoke hardware setups, having resulted in recent projects trending away from the more spatially engaging geometric experiments of the second half of the 20th century. The study hypothesis that the evolutionary design optimisation of this tectonic system has the potential to re-open and expand its practically available design solution space. This paper covers the review of a range of built projects employing catenary glulam roof system, starting from seminal historic precedents like the Festival Hall for the Swiss National Exhibition EXPO 1964 (A. Lozeron, Swiss, 1964) and the Wilkhahn Pavilions (Frei Otto, Germany, 1987), to contemporary examples, including the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre (HCMA Architecture + Design, Canada, 2016). It analysis their structural concept, geometric and spatial complexity, fabrication and assembly protocols, applied construction detailing solutions, and more, with as aim to identify methods, tools, techniques, and construction details that can be taken forward in future research aimed at minimising construction complexity. Findings from this precedent study form the basis for the evolutionary-algorithmic design and construction method development that is part of the larger study. By expanding the tectonic system’s practically applicable architecture design solution space and facilitating architects’ access to a low-tech producible, spatially versatile, lightweight, eco-friendly, wooden roof structure typology, this study contributes to environmentally sustainable building.

summary Self-assembling manufacturing for natural polymers is still in its infancy, despite the urgent need for alternatives to fuel-based products. Non-fuel based products, specifically bio-polymers, possess exceptional mechanical properties and biodegradability. Bacterial cellulose has proven to be a remarkably versatile bio-polymer, gaining attention in a wide variety of applied scientific applications such as electronics, biomedical devices, and tissue-engineering. In order to introduce bacterial cellulose as a building material, it is important to develop bio-fabrication methodologies linked to material-informed computational modeling and material science. This paper emphasizes the development of three-dimensionally grown bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes for large-scale applications, and introduces new manufacturing technologies that combine the fields of bio-materials science, digital fabrication, and material-informed computational modeling. This paper demonstrates a novel method for bacterial cellulose bio-synthesis as well as in-situ self-assembly fabrication and scaffolding techniques that are able to control three-dimensional shapes and material behavior of BC. Furthermore, it clarifies the factors affecting the bio-synthetic pathway of bacterial cellulose—such as bacteria, environmental conditions, nutrients, and growth medium—by altering the mechanical properties, tensile strength, and thickness of bacterial cellulose. The transformation of the bio-synthesis of bacterial cellulose into BC-based bio-composite leads to the creation of new materials with additional functionality and properties. Potential applications range from small architectural components to large structures, thus linking formation and materialization, and achieving a material with specified ranges and gradient conditions, such as hydrophobic or hydrophilic capacity, graded mechanical properties over time, material responsiveness, and biodegradability.

summary The aim of this paper is to present the partial results of the project "La ciudad inteligente; un palimpsesto digital", which is currently being developed. The project focuses into the emerging paradigm of Smart cities from a regional perspective, transcending the timeless notion of urban-rural dichotomy, to focus on the territory as an integral cultural landscape. Reflection, but also experimentation on specific social-based technological applications applied to territory studies, constitute an essential tool in building the reality of a smart city. From the design and implementation of a strategic action plan designed to be completed in four years, this paper shows objectives, theoretical basis, used tools and partial results of the experiment carried out in the Paisaje Industrial Fray Bentos, recently declared "World Heritage" by UNESCO.

Recent advances in Additive Manufacturing (AM) have exponentially increased the mechanical properties of 3D printed parts, opening new opportunities for this technology to be directly applied to functional architectural components at an increasingly larger scale. Thus, this paper examines the design, structural and aesthetic implications, as well as the feasibility of advanced 3D printing technologies in the production of functional architectural components through the design and prototyping of a customized, non-regular spatial frame system.

summary The research project Spatial Wire Cutting (SWC) investi- gates a multi-robotic cutting technique that allows for an efficient production of geometrically complex architectural components. Being pursued by the group of Gramazio Kohler Research at ETH Zurich, this approach involves a spatially coordinated movement of two six- axis robotic arms that control the curvature of a hot-wire, which adopts itself against the resistance of the processed material (e.g. pol- ystyrene). In contrast to standard CNC hot-wire cutting processes, in which the cutting medium remains linear, it allows the automated fab- rication of non-ruled, doubly curved surfaces. This pursuit includes the development of a custom digital design and robotic control framework that combines computational simulation and manufactur- ing feedback information. Ultimately, SWC enables a considerably expanded design and fabrication space for complex architectural ge- ometries and their construction through automated robotic technology. This paper addresses the applied workflow and technology 1) such as computational design and simulation, robotic control and adaptive fabrication, 2) results of application within a two-week design and building workshop, and 3) will conclude with further steps of future research.

summary Since the time architecture and construction began embracing robotics, the pre-fab movement has grown rapidly. As the possibilities for new design and fabrication emerge from creativity and need, the application and use of new robotic technologies becomes vital. This movement has been largely focused on the deployment of industrial-type robots used in the (automobile) manufacturing industry for decades, as well as trying to apply these technologies into off-site building construction. Beyond the pre-fab (off-site) conditions, on-site fabrication offers a valuable next step to implement new construction methods and reduce human work-related injuries. The main challenge in introducing on-site robotic fabrication/construction is the difficulty in calibrating robot navigation (localization) in an unstructured and constantly changing environment. Additionally, advances in robotic technology, similar to the revolution of at-home 3D printing, shift the ownership of modes of production from large industrial entities to individuals, allowing for greater levels of design and construction customization. This paper demonstrates a low-cost humanoid robot as highly customizable technology for floor tiling. A novel end-effector design to pick up tiles was developed, along with a localization system that can be applied to a wide variety of robots.

summary This project applies techniques in machine learning, specifically generative adversarial networks (or GANs), to produce synthetic images intended to capture the predominant visual properties of urban places. We propose that imaging cities in this manner represents the first computational approach to documenting the Genius Loci of a city (Norberg-Schulz, 1980), which is understood to include those forms, textures, colors, and qualities of light that exemplify a particular urban location and that set it apart from similar places. Presented here are methods for the collection of urban image data, for the necessary processing and formatting of this data, and for the training of two known computational statistical models (StyleGAN (Karras et al., 2018) and Pix2Pix (Isola et al., 2016)) that identify visual patterns distinct to a given site and that reproduce these patterns to generate new images. These methods have been applied to image nine distinct urban contexts across six cities in the US and Europe, the results of which are presented here. While the product of this work is not a tool for the design of cities or building forms, but rather a method for the synthetic imaging of existing places, we nevertheless seek to situate the work in terms of computer-assisted design (CAD). In this regard, the project is demonstrative of a new approach to CAD tools. In contrast with existing tools that seek to capture the explicit intention of their user (Aish, Glynn, Sheil 2017), in applying computational statistical methods to the production of images that speak to the implicit qualities that constitute a place, this project demonstrates the unique advantages offered by such methods in capturing and expressing the tacit.

summary Participatory design is not new, various design projects have included public opinions, ideas, and suggestions to help architects to produce designs that fit the desires and needs of the users or community. In the context of mass housing, participation is seldom applied as the primary focus is on efficiency. Designs are generated mainly based on architects' experiences or through data from developers or government sectors that claim to reflect the needs and desires of the occupants. In this workshop a digital platform called 'ModRule' is introduced to provide a means for a participatory process in the connection with a virtual environment software, 'Fuzor'. ModRule plays the role of a collaborative design platform while Fuzor provides real-time visualisation and building information. The aim of this workshop is to explore how a user participatory design set-up allows for an active participation of stakeholders in the initial design phase of mass housing.

summary Though robotic 3D printing technology is currently undergoing rapid development, most of the research and experiments are still based on a bottom up layering process. This paper addresses long term research into a robotic 3D printed polygon mesh whose struts are directly built up and joined together as rapidly generated physical wireframes. This paper presents a novel “multi-threaded” robotic extruder, as well as a technical strategy to create a “printable” polygon mesh that is collision-free during robotic operation. Compared to standard 3D printing, architectural applications demand much larger dimensions at human scale, geometrically lower resolution and faster production speed. Taking these features into consideration, 3D printed frameworks have huge potential in the building industry by combining robot arm technology together with FDM 3D printing technology. Currently, this methodology of rapid prototyping could potentially be applied on pre-fabricated building components, especially ones with uniform parabolic features. Owing to the mechanical features of the robot arm, the most crucial challenge of this research is the consistency of non-stop automated control. Here, an algorithm is employed not only to predict and solve problems, but also to optimize for a highly efficient construction process in coordination of the robotic 3D printing system. Since every stroke of the wireframe contains many parameters and calculations in order to reflect its native organization and structure, this robotic 3D printing process requires processing an intensive amount of data in the back stage.

summary This paper advocates alternative methods to overcome the impossibility of realising ‘perfect’ digital designs. It discusses Hong Kong’s 2015 ‘ZCB Bamboo Pavilion’ as a methodological case study for the design and construction of architecture from unprocessed natu- ral bamboo. The paper critically evaluates protocols set up to deal with errors resulting from precise digital design systems merging with inconsistent natural resources and onsite craftsmanship. The paper starts with the geometric and tectonic description of the project, illus- trating a complex and restrictive construction context. Bamboo’s unique growth pattern, structural build-up and suitability as a bending- active material are discussed and Cantonese bamboo scaffolding craftsmanship is addressed as a starting point for the project. The pa- per covers protocols, construction drawings and assembly methods developed to allow for the incorporation and of large building toler- ances and dimensional variation of bamboo. The final as-built 3d scanned structure is compared with the original digital model. The pa- per concludes by discussing the necessity of computational architec- tural design to proactively operate within a field of real-world inde- terminacy, to focus on the development of protocols that deal with imperfections, and to redirect design from the virtual world towards the latent opportunities of the physical.

summary This paper presents the design, fabrication, and construc- tion of CorkVault Aarhus, which was designed using parametric and physics simulation software and realized from ECA cork sheets cut using a CNC waterjet cutter. We recount the lessons learned through the intensive two-week workshop that explored the limits of the mate- rials and tools through prototypes and culminated with the assembly of the final free-form vault structure. Various vaults and arch proto- types provided pedagogical and research value, building up knowledge essential to the final structure built, a human scale pavilion designed and built in three days and made of a thin shell of cork pan- els working only in compression. Three driving concepts were crucial to the experience: stereotomy as a supporting theory, expanded cork agglomerate (ECA) as the main material and water jet cutting as the principal means of fabrication. The complex vault shape called for precise 5-axis cuts supporting a new paradigm in building stereotomic components for architecture.

summary This paper follows our evaluation and research into designing tangible physical media for the purposes of teaching building physics to undergraduate architecture students. These media interfaces make use of a virtual environment to promote an understanding of the cycles, which govern architectural and urban projects (for example solar studies, the flow of heat, air and water). This project aims to create an ecology of devices which can be used by students to self-direct themselves and harbour critical making in their research methods (with the explicit intent of dissolving the barrier between design and research). The basic premise of this research, is that in light of growing student numbers, more students lacking confidence in numeracy skills as well as the desire to have self-directed or group-directed learning, tangible media has a promising role to play. There are several reasons for this optimism. The first is that a better sense of intuition is gained from an interactive model over reading notes from a lecture or textbook. The second is that tangible media engages in other modes of learning, being valuable to students who have an aptitude for kinesthetic and spatial learning over text-dominant learning.

summary Parametric design is a computational-based approach used for understanding the logic and the language embedded in the design process algorithmically and mathematically. Currently, the main focus of computational models, such as shape grammar and space syntax, is primarily limited to formal and spatial requirements of the design problem. Yet, qualitative factors, such as social, cultural and contextual aspects, are also important dimensions in solving architectural design problems. In this paper, an overview of the advantages and implications of the current methods is presented. It also puts forward a ‘structured analytical system’ that combines the formal and geometric properties of the design, with descriptions that reflect the spatial, social and environmental patterns. This syntactic-discursive model is applied for encoding vernacular courtyard houses in the hot-arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa, and utilising the potentials of these cases in reflecting the lifestyle and the cultural values of the society, such as privacy, human-spatial behaviour, the social life inside the house, the hierarchy of spaces, the segregation and seclusion of family members from visitors and the orientation of spaces. The output of this analytical phase prepares the groundwork for the development of socio-spatial grammar for contemporary tall residential buildings that gives the designer the ability to reveal logical spatial topologies based on socio-environmental restrictions, and to produce alternatives that have an identity while also respecting the context, place and needs of users.

summary This paper reports an investigation into the degree of con- sistency between three different methods of sound performance evalu- ation through studying the performance of a built project as a case study. The non-controlled office environment with natural human speech as a source was selected for the subjective experiment and ODEON room acoustics modelling software was applied for digital simulation. The results indicate that although each participant may in- terpret and perceive sound in a particular way, the simulation can pre- dict this complexity to some extent to help architects in designing acoustically better spaces. Also the results imply that architects can make valid comparative evaluations of their designs in an architectur- ally intuitive way, using architectural language. The research acknowledges that complicated engineering approaches to subjective analysis and to controlling the test environment and participants is dif- ficult for architects to comprehend and implement.

summary The methodology presented in this paper is grounded on the analysis and relational relocation of attributes of the urban body, deriving from the reconstruction of the urban body as a network configuration. In contrast to the hierarchical constructions, network constructions allow for multiple connections between elements, therefore being closer to the complexity of the associative forces found in the structure of the urban body.Similarity function is applied in an attempt to restructure those attributes of the urban body which emerge from the position of each element (node) in relation to other elements of the network and not from the Cartesian topology. Being able to represent material elements as nodes, counter-bodies deriving from autopoietic -network functions emerge, allowing for an inquiry in what concerns the autopoietic features of the urban body in general, focusing on the application of autopoietic functions which generate the urban body parts and components and on the multiplicity of elements' structure, in terms of association of crowds of elements and sets of attributes' values, aiming at the redefinition of proximity as similarity and of remoteness as difference.
