summary Just as Einstein's own Relativity Theory led Einstein to reject time, Feynman’s Sum over histories theory led him to describe time simply as a direction in space. Many artists tried to visualize time as Étienne-Jules Marey when he invented the chronophotography. While the wheel of development of chronophotography in the Victorian era had ended in inventing the motion picture, a lot of research is still in its earlier stages regarding the time as a shaping media for the architectural form. Using computer animation now enables us to use time as a flexible tool to be stretched and contracted to visualize the time dilation of the Einstein's special relativity. The presented work suggests using time as a sustainable tool to shape the generated form in response to the sun movement to control the amount of daylighting entering the space by stretching the time duration and contracting time frames at certain locations of the sun trajectory along a summer day to control the amount of daylighting in the morning and afternoon versus the noon time.

summary This paper presents a methodology to collect and visualize social media data about art, in order to map art locations in cities using geo-localized data, and comparing planning decisions with the actual use of spaces. As various social networks have penetrated into the daily life of people, these become one important and effective data source to understand how people perform 'arts' around the city [Shah, 2015]. The case study for this methodology is Singapore, a vibrant city where art and culture are being promoted in the light of an emerging creative economy. The Singapore government promotes art and creates 'art clusters', such as art districts, galleries, fairs and museums in the city. Additionally, artists, creative entrepreneurs, consumers, and critics seek and explore alternative spaces. Understanding where art and creativity are discussed, broadcasted and consumed in Singapore is a key point to have better insights into art space planning, and study its effects on the city.The paper will try to answer the following research question:Is it possible to discover, through social network data, spaces where art is produced, discussed, and broadcasted to an audience in Singapore? How?

summary The current paper presents the experience of mapping pre-war Jewish communities in central Poland during a period of intensive social and cultural transformations. The initial analytical framework, provided thanks to the GIS database and concatenation of attributes coming from various sources, makes some initial observations and conclusions possible. It confirms the thesis that Jewish communities in pre-war Poland may be considered an example of a self-organising society, one which could be considered a prototype of contemporary postmodern cultural complexity. The current study provides the initial framework to map the morphology and spatial distribution of the complexity of everyday culture of use of space proper to this extremely diverse group.

summary With Information Technology such as smart phones we use public urban space differently. For example prior to cell phones people would meet in a public space by agreeing on a specific meeting location and time. Using cell phones people meet more spontaneous. Cell phones also allow people to be engaged in a very private phone conversation in the middle of a public space. In spite of information technology creating new uses for public space urban planners are still relying on old paradigms in designing and constructing it. A workshop was formulated around the question: How can we design urban spaces for a digital culture? The achieved outcome of the workshop was the design and realization of a public space that addresses this challenge. To do that students were asked to come up with new functions for public spaces, test materials, help seeking for funding and creating partnerships with the city, the industry and nonprofit organizations. During the duration of a one-semester timeframe the studio was facing a series of challenges dealing with the design, fabrication and realization of an urban space. This paper will describe the challenges of designing urban spaces for a digital culture, the structure of the workshop, the interventions made during the process and the final project, an urban landscape titled “Urban Blanket” that was build in Midtown Atlanta.

summary We present here the first results of an academic field of research, developed by a working group of GEPTC, Landscape Study Group, Land and Culture, which brings together teachers and students from UNITAU (Universidade de Taubaté) and Centro Universitário Belas Artes de Sao Paulo. Combine traditional activities of research, collective and community, involving students of Architecture and Urban Planning courses (UNITAU and Belas Artes), to generate and test the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to produce public shapefiles. From these shapefiles expected to generate three-dimensional modeling of Vila Edmundo and Vila Mariana to be the basis for exercise of urban intervention projects, aided by algorithms using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper, activity planned for the second stage of propositional character. The shapefiles made cooperatively and for public use, constitute a didactic and pedagogical experience of great interest to teaching, research and extension.

summary The idea of the Creative City has encouraged planners to develop cultural policies to support creative economies, city branding, urban identity and urban quality. On the other side, the concept of Smart City introduced the possibility to create, collect and analyse data to inform decisions on cities. The two city agendas overlap in different ways, creating a Smart cultural city nexus, that propose similar goals and mixed methodologies, like the possibility to inform planning processes with big data-based technologies. In line with this direction, we introduced conceptual and methodological tools: the first tool is the definition of Hybrid Art Spaces, the second tool is the Singapore Art Maps (SAM), which uses social media data to locate art venues in cities (Tomarchio et al. 2016); the third tool is the Social Media Art Model, which establishes a relationship between social media production and art venues features. While these tools have already shown interesting analytics outcomes (Tomarchio et al. 2016), it is important to validate their utility among practitioners and to set protocols of practices. This paper presents results from semi-structured interviews and a focus group, as a first step towards assessing the usefulness of our three tools for cultural planning practice.

summary This paper presents a specific aspect of PhD research in progress titled “Hybrid dimensions of public space: from participatory city to collaborative city”. By studying two urban interventions in the older railway complex in Campo Grande / MS, one using the video mapping and other digital graffiti techniques, the paper brings the discussion of the hybrid condition of public spaces as a locus of conflict and social interactions in cities, which allow a collective and continued construction, proposing to imagine a pluralistic and inclusive society. The technological support strengthens the connection relations, giving new meanings to the local architecture through the images projected and open space for communication, emerging the cultural resistance.

summary Generative design based on symbolic grammars is oriented on individual artists. Team work is not supported since single scripts produced by various artists have to be linked and maintained manually with a lot of effort. The main motivation for a collaborative modeling framework was to reduce the script management required for large projects. We achieved even more by extending the design paradigm to a cloud environment where everyone is part of a huge virtual team. The main contribution of the presented work is a web-based modeling system with a specialized variant of a symbolic shape grammar.

summary We are introducing a new teaching tool to show designers, architects, and artists procedural ways of constructing objects and space. Computational algorithms have been used in design for quite some time, but not all tools are very accessible to novice programmers, especially undergraduate students. ‘Beetle Blocks’ (beetleblocks.com) is a software environment that combines an easy-to-use graphical programming language with a generative model for 3D space, drawing on ‘turtle geometry,’ a geometry paradigm introduced by Abelson and Disessa, that uses a relative as opposed to an absolute coordinate system. With Beetle Blocks, designers are able to learn computational concepts and use them for their designs with more ease, as individual computational steps are made visually explicit. The beetle, the relative coordinate system, follows instructions as it moves about in 3D space. Anecdotal evidence from studio teaching in undergraduate programs shows that despite the early introduction of digital media and tools, architecture students still struggle with learning formal languages today. Beetle Blocks can significantly simplify the teaching of complex geometric ideas and we explain how this can be achieved via several examples. The blocks-based programming language can also be used to teach fundamental concepts of manufacturing and digital fabrication and we elucidate in this paper which possibilities are conducive for 2D and 3D designs. This project was previously implemented in other languages such as Flash, Processing and Scratch, but is now developed on top of Berkeley’s ‘Snap!’

summary A composite system, made from layers of perforated plywood and latex film, together with ropes and rubber seals, performs as a flexible concrete formwork. In our research we investigated whether such a system could yield more than only one single repetitive concrete form. We sought to reduce the amount of material consumed by conventional formwork and we conceived formwork as part of the design process rather than a technical means during construction. We worked as a team of architects, structural engineers and artists and through the confluence of computational design, digital fabrication, material simulation and prototyping.

summary When thinking about the future vision of a city, having in mind recent development in digital technologies and digital design tools we are inclined to expect new building structures which incorporate this technology to better help us manage the complexity of life, and to simplify our daily lives and tasks. The idea behind this research paper lies in design of such structures, which could be put inside an urban context and engage in creating a built environment that can add more to the quality of life. For us Interactive architecture is architecture that is responsive, flexible, changing, always moving and adapting to the needs of today. The world is becoming more dynamic, society is constantly changing and the new needs it develops need to be accommodated. As a result architecture has to follow. Spaces have to become more adaptive, responsive and nature concerned, while having the ability for metamorphosis, flexibility and interactivity. Taken as a starting point of this idea is a specific module from graduation project in 2014 "The Unexpected city", where it was possible to test out first ideas about interactive and flexible objects in an urban environment.

summary In continuation to Generative Design Methods, this paper investigates the implementation of Biomorphic Design, supported by computational techniques in undergraduate, architectural studio education. After reviewing the main definitions of biomorphism, organicism and biomimicry synoptically, we will assess the application of a modified biomorphic method on a final year, undergraduate design studio, in order to evaluate its potential and its suitability within the framework of a research led design studio, leading to an RIBA accredited Part I degree. Our research findings based on analysis of design outputs, student performance as well as moderators and external examiners reports initiate a constructive debate about accomplishments and failures of a design methodology which still remains alien to many undergraduate curricula.

summary This paper details a pedagogical project which calls for an improved design performance of the existing built environment through the use of smart technology and data-driven design. The project is an investigation into ways in which to improve the performance of a ‘pre-selected university building’ through the use of a media facade that allows for interactive experiences. Existing problems of the selected building have been identified through observation and research using a rich picture and agile approach. An underutilised staircase was selected as the focus site for a series of computational design and interactive design studies. The brief of this mini-research project aims to encourage more people to use the stairs and create a memorable experience with a technological approach through the application of a site specific interactive media installation. The project is an interactive staircase which utilises LED strips and generative sound. The project features a series of light boxes which are connected to the existing staircase balustrade. Arduino, passive infra-red sensors, and other motion detection sensors were used to allow for light and generative sound interaction with users using visual scripting tools and a generative design platform. Sensing technology was used as a real-time data-gathering device during the site analysis phase as well as an input device for the designed prototype to allow the testing of the data-driven design. This paper details the study and resultant interactive prototypes. It also discusses the exploration of performance based design ideas into design workflows and the integration of sensing tools into the design process. It concludes by identifying possible implications on using the Internet of Things concepts to facilitate the design of interactive architecture.

summary The methodology presented in this paper is grounded on the analysis and relational relocation of attributes of the urban body, deriving from the reconstruction of the urban body as a network configuration. In contrast to the hierarchical constructions, network constructions allow for multiple connections between elements, therefore being closer to the complexity of the associative forces found in the structure of the urban body.Similarity function is applied in an attempt to restructure those attributes of the urban body which emerge from the position of each element (node) in relation to other elements of the network and not from the Cartesian topology. Being able to represent material elements as nodes, counter-bodies deriving from autopoietic -network functions emerge, allowing for an inquiry in what concerns the autopoietic features of the urban body in general, focusing on the application of autopoietic functions which generate the urban body parts and components and on the multiplicity of elements' structure, in terms of association of crowds of elements and sets of attributes' values, aiming at the redefinition of proximity as similarity and of remoteness as difference.

summary The increasing population size of cities makes the urban fabric ever more complex and more disintegrated into smaller areas, called neighbourhoods. This project applies methods from geoscience and software engineering to the process of identification of those neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods, by nature, are defined by connec- tivity, centrality and similarity. Transport and geospatial datasets are used to detect the characteristics of places. An unsupervised learning algorithm is then applied to sort places according to their characteris- tics and detect areas with similar make up: the neighbourhood. The at- tributes can be static like land use or space syntax attributes as well as dynamic like transportation patterns over the course of a day. An un- supervised learning algorithm called Self Organizing Map is applied to project this high dimensional space constituting of places and their attributes to a two dimensional space where proximity is similarity and patterns can be detected – the neighbourhoods. To summarize, the proposed approach yields interesting insights into the structure of the urban fabric generated by human movement, interactions and the built environment. The approach represents a quantitative approach to ur- ban analysis. It reveals that the city is not a polychotomy of neigh- bourhoods but that neighbourhoods overlap and don’t have a sharp edge.

summary This paper investigates the role of spatial parameters in relation to the economic dynamic embedded in the urban fabric. The key element explored in this study is the role of the urban configuration and accessibility on the success of different business sectors in Switzerland.The underlying hypothesis is that economic markets are constant forces of change influencing the development of cities and functions on all scales. Markets are institutions that reduce people's choices based on a myriad of factors to a single number, the price. Accessibility is a resource for each business that yields multiple values of benefits and transactions in terms of economic properties. This project explores the interaction of multiple measures of accessibility, calculated by Space Syntax analysis, with the success of different markets represented by employment by business sector. 828548 business locations and 44 spatial measures were used to derive associations between them. The results show that the measure of 'Choice' correlates highly for smaller radii and 'Integration' for larger radii with the total number of jobs. The result also shows each sector has a specific set of accessibility measures that allows them to thrive.

summary This study investigates the relationships of field observa- tion, multi-agent simulation and space-syntax theory in spatial config- uration for developing design strategy for a case study, a tourist hub area in Musi Riverside, Palembang. Having such potential advantage and to tackle existing social and urban issues, our study developed a design approach based on multi-agent simulation enhanced by space syntax theory. The goal of this study is a deep understanding of multi agent simulation through mechanism of validation using field obser- vation and by taking into account the existing urban features. The purpose is to develop design strategy of pedestrian-centric urban space to be functioned as a tourist hub based on computational modelling. Following the paths result of pedestrian flow by multi-agents simula- tion, we elaborated the analysis of facility programming by means of Space Syntax theory. It shows the ranking of facility programs based on their relative connectivity and integration. By merging this result, it assembles programs and their circulation spaces by means of compu- tational simulation. Experimenting in both fields show a novel ap- proach for pedestrian-centric design in urban scale, particularly since behavioural models rarely used in early stage of design process. It shows that multi-agent simulation should be coupled with field obser- vation.

summary Through space we can read the acts and the daily activities of human being and, we can also understand different interactions within any social unit. This paper explain how specially the space type can interpret why the human being derives to a negative behavior like "Crime". So, in this study we adopt the visibility approach which is developed by the laboratory of space syntax (UCL), and which makes a sense for the link between the space design and its use and its positive or negative social consequences in the future. Then, the purpose of this paper is to present the importance of the use of visibility map which can also be an outlook approach for detecting potential hot-spots in urban planning designs specially of new cities, for avoiding the negative using of urban spaces like "Crime" in the future. The case of study is the new city of Ali Mendjeli (Constantine - Algeria), the capital of the East of Algeria known by a very fast demographic and urban growth. After analyzing a central urban neighborhood of this city using Depthmap, we found thirty-four hot-spots which can be appropriate spaces for the exercise of crime in the future, and we found that this point was downplayed in the urban planning designs before the realization of Ali Mendjeli new city.
