summary A thin line lies between reality and fiction; what is mentally imagined and what is visualized. It all depends on how ideas and images are perceived or what neurological activity is triggered in the user’s brain. Architects and designers spare no effort or tools in presenting buildings, architecture or designs in all forms or ways that would augment users’ experience whether on the perceptual or the cognitive level and in both the digital or the physical environments. In a progressive tendency they, the designers, tend to rely more and more on digitizing their vision and mission, which subsequently give them, impressive and expressive superiority, that would influence the users conscious on the one hand and manipulate their subconscious on the other. Within that process designers work hard to break any mental firewall that would prevent their ideas from pervading the space of any mental environment the user, build or visualize. In that context, to what extent such ways of mental entertainments used by architects, legitimize deception in design? What distinguishes employing the rhythmic simulation of the narrative fictional inceptions (virtual reality) from deploying the adaptive stimulation of the experience modeling conceptions. The difference between planting an idea and constructing an idea. It is not the intention of the paper to prove the failure of the computer aided design neither to stand against the digital architectural design media and applications development. It is rather to present a different way of understanding of how architectural design whether virtual, digital, or real can stimulates and induces codes and messages that is correlated to the brainwave cognitive attributes and can generate a narrative brain environment where the brain can construct and simulate its own fictional design. Doing so, the paper will review certain experimental architectural events and activities which integrate sound and sight elements and effects within some electronic, technical and digital environments.

summary In this paper the evolution of architectural composition teaching will be presented and discussed. The main point of these deliberations is to consider how digital methods and technologies have influenced the teaching methods and the understanding of compositional rules/principles by students. Another important factor which will be analysed, is the difficulties faced by teachers in the evaluation of students' work. The paper is divided into four parts, each of which concerns different approaches to architectural composition teaching. In the first part the historical background of architectural composition teaching is presented. In the second part traditional teaching methods is described, the third concerns teaching of digital architectural composition, and the fourth - digital architectural composition in virtual space. At the end of each section, the advantages and disadvantages of the discussed methods are presented. These disadvantages were a stimulus for changes in the teaching process, which was enabled thanks to the development of digital technologies (software and hardware) during the last 20 years. summary Active experimentation during intertranslations between digital and physical modelling allow designers to explore new geometrical possibilities. Particularly, while changing the strength of the material, cut operations augment bending performance of the planar surfaces. Keeping in mind the potentiality of bending behavior as a generative tool for computational process, this paper presents the findings of three phased experimentation: implication of cut patterns to 2D planar material, mapping 2D patterns onto 3D surfaces and exploring new 3D free-form surfaces.

summary The use of computational formats and digital tools includ- ing machine fabrication by indigenous people worldwide to augment traditional practices and material culture is becoming more and more commonplace. However within the practice of architecture while there are indigenous architectural practitioners utilizing digital tools, it is unclear as to whether there is motivation to implement traditional in- digenous knowledge in conjunction with these computational instru- ments and methodologies. This paper explores how the tools might be used to investigate the potential for indigenous development, cultural empowerment and innovation. It also describes a general methodology whereby capacity can be shared between academia and indigenous groups to foster new knowledge through a recently implemented in- digenous focused design research entity, SITUA. The importance and significant research potential of what we term 'domain based research' is reinforced through the exploration of emergent materials and build- ing systems located within specific tribal domains. A recent project employing 3D clay extrusion printing is used to illustrate this ap- proach.

summary Digital workflows in architectural design have upended traditional models of collaboration. As digitally networked tools further permeate the project delivery process, information and knowledge are increasingly distributed seamlessly across decentralized networks. While the seamless flow of information across digital networks can serve to augment traditional hierarchies of production, it can also change fundamentally the process by which architecture is produced, enabling modes of collaboration in which creation and production occur as decentralizing acts. This paper examines current models, methods and theories of decentralized collaboration in digitally networked architectural production, towards the goal of establishing a framework for understanding the meta-controls and standards that structure it. Particular emphasis is given to the emerging process of crowdsourcing, in which design intelligence emerges collectively from a decentralized network of actors and agents. This study serves as the foundation for a proposed model of ‘adaptive collaboration,’ in which an adaptive set of meta-controls and standards change in response to the evolving roles and scopes among individual actors and agents. An experiment in Adaptive Collaboration is described, taking place in a Solar Decathlon project at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

summary Recent trends in architectural education and practice have encouraged the use of computational tools and methods for solving complex design problems. Newer technology can augment the design process by applying progressively more-advanced computational tools. However, the complex nature of these tools can lead to students getting lost at the skill-building stage, they can become trapped in computational design terminology, leading to designs of limited spatial quality. This paper introduces a pilot study from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) for the integration of computational design technology in the undergraduate architectural curricula, based on a workshop series using a top-down teaching strategy.

summary Through the use of algorithmic design methods and an ever growing variety of digital fabrication tools the complexity of process in the architectural discipline seems to be increasing. As this statement might apply to a variety of different areas of computational design and process management, this perceived growing complexity does not have to be viewed as unnecessary complication of design processes, if palpable and justifiable benefits occur. This paper intends to analyse and investigate the potential arising from digital tools of fabrication, specifically robots and 3D printers, and from open source platforms on exploring and managing complexity while enabling both simplicity of process and simplicity of implementation through emerging open source cultures. Building on this assumptions, this paper explores the professional possibilities generated the implementation of robotics as part of the academic curriculum. The theoretical concept of Machinecraft will be introduced and showcased on two research project, both focussing on advanced digital tools, additive manufacturing and machine engineering. summary The effect of scale on different parameters of the 3D printing of concrete is explored through the design and fabrication of a 3D concrete printed pavilion. This study shows a significant gap exists between what can be generated through computer aided design (CAD) and subsequent computer aided manufacturing (generally based on CNC technology). In reality, the 3D concrete printing on the one hand poses manufacturing constraints (e.g. minimum curvature radii) due to material behaviour that is not included in current CAD/CAM software. On the other hand, the process also takes advantage of material behaviour and thus allows the creation of shapes and geometries that, too, can’t be modelled and predicted by CAD/CAM software. Particularly in the 3D printing of concrete, there is not a 1:1 relation between toolpath and printed product, as is the case with CNC milling. Material deposition is dependent on system pressure, robot speed, nozzle section, layer stacking, curvature and more – all of which are scale dependent. This paper will discuss the design and manufacturing decisions based on the effects of scale on the structural design, printed and layered geometry, robot kinematics, material behaviour, assembly joints and logistical problems. Finally, by analysing a case study pavilion, it will be explore how 3D concrete printing structures can be extended and multiplied across scales and functional domains ranging from structural to architectural elements, so that we can understand how to address questions of scale in their design.

summary This paper describes an on-going research that unites two distinct and seemingly unrelated interests. One is Arabic calligraphy and the other is parametric architecture. The effort is to integrate these interests and, in doing so, balance cultural issues with technological ones, traditional with contemporary and spiritual with material. Moreover, this paper is inspired by Arabic calligraphy and its influence on Zaha Hadid’s designs; it is invigorated by parametric systems and their capacity as a source of architectural forms. This paper will observe the rising importance of computation technologies to architecture, which has always been a form of negotiation between ‘function and fiction’ and ‘force and form’. The paper proposes a Parametric Calligraphic Machine that simultaneously produces, connects and separates calligraphic surfaces, calligraphic images and calligraphic reality. Therefore, the goal is to examine this hypothesis in order to produce a set of techniques, tools and methods that inform the three-dimensional design process of Arabic calligraphy’s contemporary possibilities by addressing a process description rather than a state description of creating calligraphic images and calligraphic surfaces. The theoretical approach highlights issues pertaining to calligraphy, spatiality, translation, generative systems, parametric design, visual structure, force and form.

summary This paper expounds the teaching strategies used to introduce architecture students in the craft of design in the course Taller de Proyecto 1. These strategies are based on experiential mappings constructed from different digital resources allowing constantly confront design with real life, in order to maintain, throughout the process, a sensitive and precise relationship between reality and experience. It concludes that these methodologies strengthen the autonomy of students, developing a valuable reconnection with the way they look and transform the world, validating the premise that the act of design is an innate human act and not necessarily an erudite one.

title Reality is interface: Two motion capture case studies of human–machine collaboration in high-skill domains

summary This article explores hybrid digital/physical workflows in the building trades, a high-skill domain where human dexterity and craft can be augmented by the precision and repeatability of digital design and fabrication tools. In particular, the article highlights two projects where historic construction techniques were extended through live motion capture of human gesture, information-rich visualization projected in the space of fabrication and custom robotic tooling to generate free-form running moulds. The first case study explores decorative plastering techniques and an augmented workflow where designers and craftspeople can quickly explore patterns through freehand sketch, test ideas with shaded previews and seamlessly produce physical parts using robotic collaborators. The second case study reimagines a roman vaulting technique that used terracotta bottles as part of an interlocking masonry system. Motion capture is used to place building elements precisely in material arrays with real-time visual feedback guiding the hand-held placement of each bottle. These case studies serve to underscore the emerging importance of reality capture in the design and construction of the built environment. Increasingly, the algorithmic power of computational tools and the nuances of human skill can be combined in hybrid design and fabrication workflows.

summary Timber joinery for furniture and architectural purpose has always been identified as a skill or craft. The craft is the demonstration of hand machined skill and precision which is passed down or developed through the iteration of creation and refined reflection. Using digital fabrication techniques provides new, typically unexplored ways of creating and designing joints. It is as if these limitations which bind the ratio of complexity and use are stretched. This means that these joints, from a technical standpoint, can be more advanced than historically hand-made joints as digital machines are not bound by the limitations of the human. The research investigated in this paper explores the ability to create sets of joints in a parametric environment that will be produced with CNC machines, thus redefining the idea of the joint through contemporary tools of creation and fabrication. The research also aims to provide a seamless, digital workflow from the flexible, parametric creation of the joint to the final physical fabrication of it. Traditional joints, more simple in shape and assembly, were first digitally created to ease the educational challenges of learning a computational workflow that entailed the creation and fabrication of geometrically programmed joints. Following the programming and manufacturing of these traditional joints, more advanced and complex joints were created as the understanding of the capabilities of the software and CNC machines developed. The more complex and varied joints were taken from a CAD virtual environment and tested on a 3-axis CNC machine and 3D printer. The transformation from the virtual environment to the physical highlighted areas that required further research and testing. The programmed joint was then refined using the feedback from the digital to physical process creating a more robust joint that was informed by reality.

summary Greening has been promoted to improve the living condi- tions in urban environments. Quantification of greenery is an im- portant issue to identify the criteria for stakeholders in the process of greening. This research focuses on the quantification of visible green- ery ratio which is defined as the amount of greenery in the field of vi- sion. Some measurement methods of visible greenery ratio have been already proposed. However, the quantification process is usually time consuming and prone to human errors due to manual operations by us- ing an image processing software. Therefore, in this research, the au- thors developed an automated measurement system based on image processing technology for the efficient visible greenery ratio meas- urement. In the verification experiment, the proposed method achieved similar results for extracted pixels of green areas as the tradi- tional manual method, with decreased calculation time. Furthermore, in addition to measuring the current ratio of greenery, this system can visualize possible future changes in visible greenery by adding plant- ing (landscape) design models in an Augmented Reality (AR) envi- ronment. Using the proposed method, an ideal greening environment can be designed and evaluated by end-users, more intuitively. The de- veloped design system is expected to eventually result in increasing the amount of greenery in the urban environment.

summary Virtual Reality (VR) software has developed to the point where, for the architect who is averagely technically adept, it can be incorporated into the design process with reasonable effort and costs. For VR to be an effective design tool, it must add value to the design process and should give insights and opportunities not available by other methods.Previous research by the authors reported on the results of an international student workshop which focused both on the workflow (to prepare the architectural models for the new VR systems) and the spatial perception that users experienced. In this paper, we continue to explore the question: "Can low cost VR be an effective addition to the architects' design toolbox, or does it still remain a "far-fetched, high-tech expensive folly?"To do this we are working with a larger group of students, a more developed workflow and we are also expanding this to architects in practice. We will be assessing both the practicality of integrating VR into the design workflow and the spatial perception of the designer when interacting with the model. We are experimenting with additional interface tools.
