summary As one of the most important areas in the Palace Museum, Beijing, China, the Hall of Mental Cultivation had suffered from overcrowding of visitors before it was closed in 2016 for conservation. Preparing for the reopening in 2020, the Palace Museum decided to take the chance and initiate finer-grained tourism management in the Hall. This research intends to provide an audio-guided touring program by dynamically evaluating the Tourism Carrying Capacity (TCC) with the highlight spots in the Hall, to operate the touring program spatiotemporally. Framing an optimization problem for the touring program, an agent-based simulator, Thunderhead Pathfinder, originally developed for evacuation in the emergency, is utilized to verify the performance of the touring system. The simulation shows that the proposed touring program could precisely fit all the key requirements to improve the visitors' experience, to guarantee heritage safety, and to ensure more efficient management.

summary Modern modular constructions can consist of highly indi- vidualised elements that are produced at nearly the same efficiency as serial manufacturing. This paper focuses on the project “WoodWaves” an Info-Point for the conference World Congress of Timber Engineer- ing, which was designed with this new conception of modularity. The process utilises a robotically operated milling cutter to form block- board panels out of spruce, which make up the multifunctional infor- mation point. The entire object is produced with only sliding dovetail joints. Parametric design methods were developed to automatically adjust each joint to fit the individual conditions. New CAD/CAM in- terfaces, linking design directly with fabrication, enabled the serial production of 108 different shaped elements with a 6-axis robotic arm.

summary The timber industry is expanding, including construction wood product applications such as glue-laminated wood products (R. Sikkema et al., 2023). To boost further utilisation of engineered wood products in architecture, further development and optimisation of related tectonic systems is required. Integration of digital design technologies in this endeavour presents opportunities for a more performative and spatially diverse architecture production, even in construction contexts typified by limited means and/or resources. This paper reports on historic precedent case study research that informs an ongoing larger study focussing on novel algorithmic methods for the design and production of lightweight, large-span, catenary glulam roof structures. Given their structural operation in full tension, catenary-based roof structures substantially reduce material needs when compared with those relying on straight beams (Wong and Crolla, 2019). Yet, the manufacture of their non-standard geometries typically requires costly bespoke hardware setups, having resulted in recent projects trending away from the more spatially engaging geometric experiments of the second half of the 20th century. The study hypothesis that the evolutionary design optimisation of this tectonic system has the potential to re-open and expand its practically available design solution space. This paper covers the review of a range of built projects employing catenary glulam roof system, starting from seminal historic precedents like the Festival Hall for the Swiss National Exhibition EXPO 1964 (A. Lozeron, Swiss, 1964) and the Wilkhahn Pavilions (Frei Otto, Germany, 1987), to contemporary examples, including the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre (HCMA Architecture + Design, Canada, 2016). It analysis their structural concept, geometric and spatial complexity, fabrication and assembly protocols, applied construction detailing solutions, and more, with as aim to identify methods, tools, techniques, and construction details that can be taken forward in future research aimed at minimising construction complexity. Findings from this precedent study form the basis for the evolutionary-algorithmic design and construction method development that is part of the larger study. By expanding the tectonic system’s practically applicable architecture design solution space and facilitating architects’ access to a low-tech producible, spatially versatile, lightweight, eco-friendly, wooden roof structure typology, this study contributes to environmentally sustainable building.

summary We present our research on the use of immersive stereo- scopic visualisation in interaction with collections of architectural rep- resentations. We investigate the processing and visualisation of multi- ple model representations from architectural datasets. We develop two models for locating collections of datasets in spatial contexts, namely a realistic gallery and a synthetic landscape. We evaluate and report the qualitative interactive experience with two forms of contextual in- teraction within a novel stereoscopic immersive visualisation (cylin- drical projection) environment. The use of immersive stereoscopic visualisation conveys aspects and dimensions of the collections that would not be possible without the forms of contextual interaction, the gallery metaphor and the synthetic landscape to interact with the ar- chitectural collections. The combination of abstract representations with realistic sense of scale and interaction provide the user with an immersive experience to convey the collective form.

summary Alongside shifts in the technological landscape, the origin of creativity in architectural design has been consistently evolving. According to French philosopher Bernard Stiegler, the architectural design process is never individualistic but rather shaped by the complex interaction between human creativity and what he terms the “pre-individual milieu”, the synthesis of various factors such as cultural heritage, technological innovation (Stiegler, 2016). Over the last three decades, the emergence of digital technologies such as the Internet of Things, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence has significantly enhanced the dynamism and diversity of human–machine communication. With the advancement of digital technologies in the field of architecture, artificial intelligence, machine intelligence, and material intelligence are increasingly integrated into the creative process. In the form of hybrid intelligence, this shift expands the scope of architectural creativity and creative agency beyond the mere intelligent landscape of the human mind. As suggested by architectural theorist Antoine Picon, “another possibility is to consider the pairing of man and machine as a new composite subject……This proposition is suggested by various contemporary reflections on computer technologies and their anthropological dimension” (Picon, 2011).

summary The architecture has been greatly expanded in its complexity by the resources of computing. Thus, most intense experiences are achieved through visual metaphors. As a way of understanding digital cases increasingly present in the design of everyday life, this work aims to illustrate an application of the semiotic method of Charles W. Morris: a study on digital design created by Kokkugia Architects, the building Babiy Yar Memorial. A syntactic analysis of the digital process (presenting the concepts and key elements within the process) is performed; the understanding of that expression in the semantic context and, finally, their contextual pragmatic aspects.

summary The idea of the Creative City has encouraged planners to develop cultural policies to support creative economies, city branding, urban identity and urban quality. On the other side, the concept of Smart City introduced the possibility to create, collect and analyse data to inform decisions on cities. The two city agendas overlap in different ways, creating a Smart cultural city nexus, that propose similar goals and mixed methodologies, like the possibility to inform planning processes with big data-based technologies. In line with this direction, we introduced conceptual and methodological tools: the first tool is the definition of Hybrid Art Spaces, the second tool is the Singapore Art Maps (SAM), which uses social media data to locate art venues in cities (Tomarchio et al. 2016); the third tool is the Social Media Art Model, which establishes a relationship between social media production and art venues features. While these tools have already shown interesting analytics outcomes (Tomarchio et al. 2016), it is important to validate their utility among practitioners and to set protocols of practices. This paper presents results from semi-structured interviews and a focus group, as a first step towards assessing the usefulness of our three tools for cultural planning practice.
