summary The design process of a building often involves many dif- ferent actors and people with different experiences, level of knowledge and ability to interpret information. The most common in- formation media in these processes are 2D-drawings, documents and 3D images of design. These media can be difficult to interpret and un- derstand and could cause communication difficulties and design er- rors. However, in this context, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Virtual Reality (VR) have been shown to offer an efficient com- munication platform. In this paper we present and evaluate a portable immersive visualisation system that uses the BIMs directly from the design tools. The system is validated in a real construction project, where the different disciplines in the design process used the system. The result was collected through interviews and observation during usage of the system. All the participants expressed that this type of visual interface helped them to get another level of understanding and perception of space, which lead to better decision-making process and resolving of design issues.

summary This paper follows our evaluation and research into designing tangible physical media for the purposes of teaching building physics to undergraduate architecture students. These media interfaces make use of a virtual environment to promote an understanding of the cycles, which govern architectural and urban projects (for example solar studies, the flow of heat, air and water). This project aims to create an ecology of devices which can be used by students to self-direct themselves and harbour critical making in their research methods (with the explicit intent of dissolving the barrier between design and research). The basic premise of this research, is that in light of growing student numbers, more students lacking confidence in numeracy skills as well as the desire to have self-directed or group-directed learning, tangible media has a promising role to play. There are several reasons for this optimism. The first is that a better sense of intuition is gained from an interactive model over reading notes from a lecture or textbook. The second is that tangible media engages in other modes of learning, being valuable to students who have an aptitude for kinesthetic and spatial learning over text-dominant learning.

title Hyve-3D and the 3D Cursor: Architectural co-design with freedom in Virtual Reality

summary Hybrid Virtual Environment 3D (Hyve-3D) is a system that allows architectural co-design inside Virtual Reality by a new model of interaction through a 3D cursor. It augments the concept of the cursor to better interact with three- dimensional virtual spaces, rethinking it as a drawing/control plane and viewpoints inside the virtual world. Handheld tablets intuitively manipulate 3D cursors. Users can simultaneously access their individual complementary views on the tablets as personal windows into the shared immersive display. They can concurrently sketch in three dimensions, transform, and manipulate three-dimensional objects using the tablets as tangible props and collectively navigate the scene using the tablet as a 3D trackpad. The system implementation and co-design assessments of different settings are presented.

summary It has been proposed that, after the internet age, we are now entering a new era of the '/Augmented Age/' (King, 2016). Physician Michio Kaku imagined the future of architects will be relying heavily on Augmented Reality technology (Kaku, 2015). Augmented reality technology is not a new technology and has been evolving rapidly. In the last three years, the technology has been applied in mainstream consumer devices (Coppens, 2017). This opened up possibilities in every aspect of our daily lives and it is expected that this will have a great impact on every field of consumer's technology in near future, including design and fabrication. What is the future of design and making? What kind of new digital fabrication paradigm will emerge from inevitable technological development? What kind of impact will this have on the built environment and industry? FlowMorph is a research project developed in the Bartlett School of Architecture, B-Pro AD with the collaboration of the authors and students as a 12 month MArch programme, we developed a unique design project trying to answer these questions which will be introduced in this paper.

summary How might 21st-century computational technologies enhance lighting functionality in architecture? The Groove Light provokes relationships between light and shadow, adding a new dimension to future lighting. A series of distinctive and complex 3D-printed lanterns, which cast identical patterns of geometric shadows, creates the optical illusion that they are floating above a continuous, geometric carpet of shadows. The authors tested this concept in three steps: 1. 3D printability, 2. a lighting test and 3. interactivity. The paper also reports the effectiveness of a selective and custom support strategy for printing overhanging geometries with fused deposition modelling (FDM) 3D printers and further highlights differences between the computational models and physical prototypes in the quest for 'point' light sources.

The result is a personalised real time way finding system, incorporating embodied physical architectural elements and virtual simulation pro- jections with a supporting mobile application. The developed spaces are immersive and ever changing, representing live data inputs and movement of users in space specific to location, through the develop- ment of a data representing software.

summary In the cold space of information objects drift in the void. All is abandoned in junk space or fiercely organized. The difference between an object as a form and formations - or interacting populations of elements in an environment - is still disregarded. In Cartesian space objects are preconceived by an external observer, in static and timeless space. In parametric space Euclidian geometries persist as preconfigured objects. The flux of information between physical and digital realities is still archaic: is done with effort, demanding physical strength and time. There is low interaction between physical and digital realities. Seems like a dystopian reality in a past?future. The theory of relativity asserts that space and time are interdependent, being modified and modifying us. In organic and synthetic biology, form results from the dynamic interaction of elements. This Research argues that form and environment are interdependent in physical and digital dimensions. A two-part applied research method is proposed: preliminary research and further development via workshop. Preliminary research identified the knowledge areas involved, defined problem search space and tested methods and techniques to solve it. The successfully developed design methodology - combining the preliminary research and workshop - can be used to solve future design problems.

summary Contemporary knowledge working environments are rapidly evolving alongside the digital and virtual technologies used for knowledge work. Contemporary offices range from cellular offices with assigned desks to activity-based offices with shared-desk policies and location independent blended working. Furthermore, advanced technologies, such as intelligent and adaptive lighting, are being implemented in our everyday surroundings, including working environments. The changes require adaptation from both knowledge workers and architectural elements of the environments. We propose that knowledge work environments should be explored from user-centric point of view and we aim to elucidate how the physical design of the workplace enhances well-being, creativity and innovation of their users. The various parameters of knowledge work environments should be specified through architectural design process but also through ethnographic methods, which enable us to retrieve the parameters of knowledge work environments users deem important. Using both spatial design and functional design approach we will challenge the multidimensional problem field of designing collaborative knowledge work environments.

summary Virtual modelling enables the testing of conceptual, constructional and environmental aspects, prior to embarking on the in situ construction process. This is being gradually implemented in architectural heritage, particularly with monuments that are at risk. Various international heritage conventions have emphasised the great role that virtual reconstruction plays in building a comprehensive repository of the selected case studies. This repository would be used for educational and professional purposes as well as raising community awareness of heritage values and conservation. On the other hand, only few genuine attempts have been made to develop a virtual reconstruction approach in a conservation project to integrate concept, materiality or spatial quality of the conservation proposal into the perception of the heritage cultural values.

title HiGame: Improving elderly well-being through horticultural interaction

summary Family support is the key to the well-being problems of elderly. Unlike health problem, mental problem often depends on the social network of elderly. How to enhance elderly well-being problems will become how to increase the interaction between elderly and their family. Horticultural interaction proves to be an effective but smooth impact on improving well-being problems of elderly. By designing a horticultural interaction game for motivating or invoking the communication between elderly and their family members, the prototype is developed based on the framework of behavior setting and semi-fixed features. Three groups of games, physical games, virtual games, and spatial interaction games, are analyzed and 14 cases are studied and evaluated for the features required. Particularly, spatial interaction games with both physical and virtual games are brought into scope, and HiGame (Horticultural Interaction Game, hi game) is developed. Five scenarios using sensor network and mobile interface are unleashed and tested in an experiment with two sets of elderly family participants. HiGame has connection to both physical and virtual spaces for elderly and their family. Elderly interact with distant family through physical watering, weeding, and fertilizing. And distant family use virtual game to support elderly. The interaction process can be further enhanced with the following: (1) separating the tasks for elderly and family ends individually and then cooperating together might enforce the intergenerational interaction and reflection on cooperation in the gaming process; (2) the connection among each scenario can be further developed into a different process, such as competition of different members for helping the elderly to complete certain task might motivate the game experience further.

summary A thin line lies between reality and fiction; what is mentally imagined and what is visualized. It all depends on how ideas and images are perceived or what neurological activity is triggered in the user’s brain. Architects and designers spare no effort or tools in presenting buildings, architecture or designs in all forms or ways that would augment users’ experience whether on the perceptual or the cognitive level and in both the digital or the physical environments. In a progressive tendency they, the designers, tend to rely more and more on digitizing their vision and mission, which subsequently give them, impressive and expressive superiority, that would influence the users conscious on the one hand and manipulate their subconscious on the other. Within that process designers work hard to break any mental firewall that would prevent their ideas from pervading the space of any mental environment the user, build or visualize. In that context, to what extent such ways of mental entertainments used by architects, legitimize deception in design? What distinguishes employing the rhythmic simulation of the narrative fictional inceptions (virtual reality) from deploying the adaptive stimulation of the experience modeling conceptions. The difference between planting an idea and constructing an idea. It is not the intention of the paper to prove the failure of the computer aided design neither to stand against the digital architectural design media and applications development. It is rather to present a different way of understanding of how architectural design whether virtual, digital, or real can stimulates and induces codes and messages that is correlated to the brainwave cognitive attributes and can generate a narrative brain environment where the brain can construct and simulate its own fictional design. Doing so, the paper will review certain experimental architectural events and activities which integrate sound and sight elements and effects within some electronic, technical and digital environments.

summary In this paper the evolution of architectural composition teaching will be presented and discussed. The main point of these deliberations is to consider how digital methods and technologies have influenced the teaching methods and the understanding of compositional rules/principles by students. Another important factor which will be analysed, is the difficulties faced by teachers in the evaluation of students' work. The paper is divided into four parts, each of which concerns different approaches to architectural composition teaching. In the first part the historical background of architectural composition teaching is presented. In the second part traditional teaching methods is described, the third concerns teaching of digital architectural composition, and the fourth - digital architectural composition in virtual space. At the end of each section, the advantages and disadvantages of the discussed methods are presented. These disadvantages were a stimulus for changes in the teaching process, which was enabled thanks to the development of digital technologies (software and hardware) during the last 20 years.
