summary Being located in a hot, humid and arid bioregion, as well as having a unique religious and social context, the Gulf Cooperation Council cities pose significant challenges to the achievement of sustainable urban development. Using native neighborhoods in Abu Dhabi as a case study, this ongoing research aims to develop a design methodology which utilizes both qualitative and quantitative analysis towards the holistic, feedback driven design of new neighborhood typologies for the native population. This paper focuses on the methodology and application of a water use module which measures neighborhood scale indoor and outdoor water use, an area of simulation critical to developing sustainable neighborhoods for Arab cities, yet underrepresented within the literature. The water module comprises one part of a larger toolkit that aims to measure both environmental sustainability as well as social and cultural factors unique to the context of Abu Dhabi and the gulf region.

summary This paper presents a first critical framing of 3D digital reconstructions of lost buildings, hence focusing on reconstructions using 3D models. This critical framing is constituted by reflections on definitions, concepts, methodologies and digital technologies. Much experimentation in the digital reconstruction of lost buildings has produced valuable results during the last twenty years, but the variety of methods, software types, and purposes should be reorganized into clear operational protocols to allow sharing of information and collaboration across disciplines. We have therefore investigated the diverse approaches towards digital reconstructions of lost buildings and found that digital reconstructions are not typically aimed at simple visualizations: they are often further developed in virtual environments, information systems and tools for simulations and analysis. In this sense they are not products but instruments for further research and/or heritage conservation. Counter the large number of theoretical positions, methods and tools specific to different disciplines, such as architecture and archaeology, we can find the almost total absence of a comprehensive critical assessment. This paper, which is part of a larger project, intends to open and articulate a debate on how to define, analyze and critically systematize the methodologies for the digital reconstruction of lost buildings.

summary In Brazil, the application of wood in contemporary constructions is concentrated in the south and southeast. However, the entire country has area for cultivation and forest management, which is favorable for expansion in such applications. Wood is capable of absorbing CO2 and consumes little energy in production and manufacturing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the deficiencies of the building typologies became evident. This research aims to analyze digitally executed prefabricated houses such as Instant House (1), Digitally Fabricated House (2) by Sass, and WikiHouse (3) by Parvin; under the categories of Cardoso (2016): modulation, reversibility, and flexibility. The deductive method was used to investigate assumptions among the three case studies; and grounded in scientific literature to analyze and collect data. In general, the solutions studied enabled customizable systems allied to wood panels, modules, and fittings as generators of architectural form.

title Parametrizing Indian Karnata-Dravida Temple Using Geometry

summary The Karnata-Dravida temple tradition flourished and evolved for 700 years. The evolution of the typology was demonstrated through the structure. However, as the Shastras or ancient texts proclaim, the underlying principles of geometry remain unchanged. Geometry and the unchanging principles of construction made the architects experiment with form, material and ornamentation. Geometry does not only mean shapes or two dimensional diagrams but it is a rule to amalgamate all the elements to form a dynamic form of a temple. The paper validates the use of geometry through an evolving sequence of Karnata-Dravida temples with the help of an analytical model created using the grasshopper software. The components of the model are based on the geometric rule (the basis for parametrizing) and parameters of the algorithm – plan forms, organizational compositions, vimana or superstructure composition – which result in a geometry. Even though building science is an old tradition, the use of computational procedures reveals the predictable nature of temples in the Dravidian clan and enables the analysis of existing temples, development of new possibilities or evolution of interpreted forms. Hence, enriching the existing understandings of previous scholarships in the field of temple architecture with an entirely new system of interpretation. In the age of technology where analytics plays a crucial role in almost all sectors, ancient temple architecture in India unfortunately falls behind when it comes to computational methods of restoration or reconstruction. This research questions the applicability of computational technology as a facilitator in preserving or reconstructing existing temples while maintaining its creative liberty.

It proposes a purpose and context fit approach towards the automation of urban data generation based on GIS tools and New Urbanism typologies. Then, selected examples from literature are described and discussed. Finally, the research study is presented and the outcomes compared with more traditional methodology.

summary Soil contamination poses a series of important health issues, following years of neglect, constant industrialization, and unsustainable agriculture. It is estimated that 30% of the total cultivated soil in the world will convert to degraded land by 2020 (Rashid et al. 2016). Finding suitable treatment technologies to clean up contaminated water and soil is not trivial, and although technological solutions are sought, many are both resource-expensive and potentially equally unsustainable in long term. Bacteria and fungi have proved efficient in contributing to the bioavailability of nutrients and in aggregating formation in degraded soils (Rashid et al. 2016). Our research aims to explore the possible implementation of physical computing, computational analysis, and digital fabrication techniques in the design and optimization of an efficient soil remediation strategy using mycelium. The study presented here is a first step towards an overarching methodology for the development of an automated soil decontamination process, using an optimized bio-cell fungus seed that can be remotely populated using aerial transportation. The presented study focuses on the development of a methodology for capturing and modeling the growth of the mycelium fungus using photogrammetry-based 3D scanning and computational analysis techniques.

summary In recent years, a growing research agenda on the subject of additive manufacturing for architectural design has been established on the basis of jetting and extrusion technology. While jetting pro- vides enough flexibility to print multiple digital materials in a single run, extrusion has proven to be the most viable technique for large- scale and on-site manufacturing. Because major contributions of both research lines cannot be combined due to technological differences, special attention has been devoted towards the development of print- ing strategies that could approximate similar material flexibility of jet- ting by means of extrusion techniques. In this context, this paper pre- sents a computational design methodology for architectural components that enables grading weight-strength ratio of cement based materials through extrusion. Built upon the integration of mod- elling, analysis and fabrication, such methodology allows to optimize material distribution and geometric definition on the basis of physical and fabrication constraints. A case study is presented for describing the design processes of a circular column and the fabrication of a sec- tion it.

summary This paper provides an overview on the relation between computational ontologies and shape grammars regarding the development and production of multi-purpose Semantic Design Systems. The objective of the author's ongoing research is to assist the creation of generative design systems, applicable to design processes in general. Shape grammar rules and ontologies in these systems will be focusing on abstract, generic rules and generic descriptions. When combined through contextually specified relations, these assume semantic expressions and should be able to produce meaningful results.We collect here a short state of the art of the research developed in the fields of architecture, urbanism and computer science in the past ten years regarding the use of knowledge bases (ontologies) combined with generative design systems (with a particular focus on shape grammars). We expect to provide both insight about architectural and urban typologies and the production of meaningful designs using automated generative design systems.

summary The study of Interactive Architecture (IA) spans over several decades and appears to be gaining increasing momentum in recent years. Yet, inhabitant-centered approaches towards research and design in the field still have a long way ahead to explore. Particularly, we observed that the examination of IA’s social relevance in literature is still incipient and ill supported by evidence. The study discussed in this paper is attempting to remediate this gap by exploring one of the first socio-political arguments around the relevance of IA, namely inhabitant empowerment and agency. It investigates whether an inhabitant’s relation and experience with interactive spaces, conceived according to different interaction strategies, increases the participants’ perception of their own agency in the space. In this paper, we briefly explain the prototyping of an interactive space-plan designed to emulate the behavior of four basic models of interaction. Finally, the paper presents an experimental study set to test inhabitant agency in IA. It concludes that IA has the potential to increase inhabitant agency, but that this is very dependable on the system’s design regarding behavior and interaction.

summary The countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council have, in recent years, undertaken several initiatives to make sustainability central to their urban agendas. This research aims to operationalize the concept of sustainable development – environmental, economic and socio-cultural – in the region, and develop parameters that define it. Using native neighborhoods in Abu Dhabi as a case study, it focuses on the development process of a computational toolkit which has two major components – a quantitative toolkit which contains modules for simulation of aspects of environmental and economic sustainability, and a spatial toolkit which contains modules for simulation of socio-spatial practices associated with the specific social and cultural context. One of the primary needs of these communities, identified through an extensive review of literature and through conversations with Emiratis, is that of visual and acoustical privacy. Privacy from neighbors and passers-by, externally, and between genders, internally within the house. Using this as a starting point, this paper describes the development process of a module that aims to measure levels of external visual privacy of surfaces at a housing plot level, from neighbors and passers-by. The first section of the paper establishes the context of the research. The second section focuses on describing the process of modeling built form and testing it for visibility and thus, privacy.

summary In continuation to Generative Design Methods, this paper investigates the implementation of Biomorphic Design, supported by computational techniques in undergraduate, architectural studio education. After reviewing the main definitions of biomorphism, organicism and biomimicry synoptically, we will assess the application of a modified biomorphic method on a final year, undergraduate design studio, in order to evaluate its potential and its suitability within the framework of a research led design studio, leading to an RIBA accredited Part I degree. Our research findings based on analysis of design outputs, student performance as well as moderators and external examiners reports initiate a constructive debate about accomplishments and failures of a design methodology which still remains alien to many undergraduate curricula.

summary Digital fabrication processes and technologies are becom- ing an essential part of the modern product manufacturing. As the use of 3D printing grows, potential applications into large scale processes are emerging. The combined methods of computational design and robotic fabrication have demonstrated potential to expand architectur- al design. However, factors such as material use, energy demands, du- rability, GHG emissions and waste production must be recognized as the priorities over the entire life of any architectural project. Given the recent developments at architecture scale, this study aims to investi- gate the environmental consequences and opportunities of digital fab- rication in construction. This paper presents two case studies of classic building elements digitally fabricated. In each case study, the projects were assessed according to the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) frame- work and compared with conventional construction with similar func- tion. The analysis highlighted the importance of material-efficient de- sign to achieve high environmental benefits in digitally fabricated architecture. The knowledge established in this research should be di- rected to the development of guidelines that help designers to make more sustainable choices in the implementation of digital fabrication in architecture and construction.

summary This paper reports an investigation into the degree of con- sistency between three different methods of sound performance evalu- ation through studying the performance of a built project as a case study. The non-controlled office environment with natural human speech as a source was selected for the subjective experiment and ODEON room acoustics modelling software was applied for digital simulation. The results indicate that although each participant may in- terpret and perceive sound in a particular way, the simulation can pre- dict this complexity to some extent to help architects in designing acoustically better spaces. Also the results imply that architects can make valid comparative evaluations of their designs in an architectur- ally intuitive way, using architectural language. The research acknowledges that complicated engineering approaches to subjective analysis and to controlling the test environment and participants is dif- ficult for architects to comprehend and implement.

summary This paper details a pedagogical project which calls for an improved design performance of the existing built environment through the use of smart technology and data-driven design. The project is an investigation into ways in which to improve the performance of a ‘pre-selected university building’ through the use of a media facade that allows for interactive experiences. Existing problems of the selected building have been identified through observation and research using a rich picture and agile approach. An underutilised staircase was selected as the focus site for a series of computational design and interactive design studies. The brief of this mini-research project aims to encourage more people to use the stairs and create a memorable experience with a technological approach through the application of a site specific interactive media installation. The project is an interactive staircase which utilises LED strips and generative sound. The project features a series of light boxes which are connected to the existing staircase balustrade. Arduino, passive infra-red sensors, and other motion detection sensors were used to allow for light and generative sound interaction with users using visual scripting tools and a generative design platform. Sensing technology was used as a real-time data-gathering device during the site analysis phase as well as an input device for the designed prototype to allow the testing of the data-driven design. This paper details the study and resultant interactive prototypes. It also discusses the exploration of performance based design ideas into design workflows and the integration of sensing tools into the design process. It concludes by identifying possible implications on using the Internet of Things concepts to facilitate the design of interactive architecture.

summary Complex forms and structures have always been highly valued in architecture, even much before the development of computers. Many architects and engineers have strived to develop structures that look very complex but at the same time are relatively simple to understand, calculate and build. A good example of this approach is the Beijing National Aquatics Centre design for the 2008 Olympic Games, also known as the Water Cube. This paper presents a proposal for a structural variance-producing engine using cellular automata (CA) techniques to produce complex structures based on Weaire-Phelan geometry. In other words, this research evaluates how generative and parametric design can be integrated with structural performance in order to enhance design flexibility and control in different stages of the design process. The method we propose was built in three groups of procedures: 1) we developed a method to generate several fits for the two Weaire-Phelan polyhedrons using CA computation techniques; 2) through the finite elements method, we codify the structural analysis outcomes to use them as inputs for the CA algorithm; 3) evaluation: we propose a framework to compare how the final outcomes deviate for the good solutions in terms of structural performance and rationalization of components. We are interested in knowing how the combination of the procedures could contribute to produce complex structures that are at the same time certain rational. The system developed allows the structural analysis of structured automatically generated by a generative system. However, some efficient solutions from the structural performance point of view do not necessarily represent a rational solution from the feasibility aspects.

summary The increasing population size of cities makes the urban fabric ever more complex and more disintegrated into smaller areas, called neighbourhoods. This project applies methods from geoscience and software engineering to the process of identification of those neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods, by nature, are defined by connec- tivity, centrality and similarity. Transport and geospatial datasets are used to detect the characteristics of places. An unsupervised learning algorithm is then applied to sort places according to their characteris- tics and detect areas with similar make up: the neighbourhood. The at- tributes can be static like land use or space syntax attributes as well as dynamic like transportation patterns over the course of a day. An un- supervised learning algorithm called Self Organizing Map is applied to project this high dimensional space constituting of places and their attributes to a two dimensional space where proximity is similarity and patterns can be detected – the neighbourhoods. To summarize, the proposed approach yields interesting insights into the structure of the urban fabric generated by human movement, interactions and the built environment. The approach represents a quantitative approach to ur- ban analysis. It reveals that the city is not a polychotomy of neigh- bourhoods but that neighbourhoods overlap and don’t have a sharp edge.

summary This study investigates the relationships of field observa- tion, multi-agent simulation and space-syntax theory in spatial config- uration for developing design strategy for a case study, a tourist hub area in Musi Riverside, Palembang. Having such potential advantage and to tackle existing social and urban issues, our study developed a design approach based on multi-agent simulation enhanced by space syntax theory. The goal of this study is a deep understanding of multi agent simulation through mechanism of validation using field obser- vation and by taking into account the existing urban features. The purpose is to develop design strategy of pedestrian-centric urban space to be functioned as a tourist hub based on computational modelling. Following the paths result of pedestrian flow by multi-agents simula- tion, we elaborated the analysis of facility programming by means of Space Syntax theory. It shows the ranking of facility programs based on their relative connectivity and integration. By merging this result, it assembles programs and their circulation spaces by means of compu- tational simulation. Experimenting in both fields show a novel ap- proach for pedestrian-centric design in urban scale, particularly since behavioural models rarely used in early stage of design process. It shows that multi-agent simulation should be coupled with field obser- vation.
