summary This article analyses some of the proposals produced in the late 1970´s by the American contemporary artist Dan Graham, in which he uses technical means to investigate the audience´s perception and behavior. The questions raised highlight reciprocity phenomena and identity constructions – factors that affect our experience and behavior in contemporary cities daily life. All of these issues derive from Graham´s investigations of the main information and communication technologies (media) produced at that time, and which continue to offer reflections on current relationship between technical means and the subject – that is, his/her condition as audience, observer, spectator or user.

summary This paper presents and discusses the relationship between the concepts of Smart Cities and City Information Modeling (CIM). It conveys the notion that these are complementary and not competing concepts, as one might think at first glance. On the other hand, the paper demonstrates the importance of these concepts to overcome the challenges to the cities of the 21st century, from findings contained in official documents published by the United Nations (UN), to analyze the growth of world population and the emergence of new cities to house population groups. Finally, this paper argues that the CIM with an inducing factor for the Smart City is an important resource to help improve the quality of life in cities.

summary The increasing population size of cities makes the urban fabric ever more complex and more disintegrated into smaller areas, called neighbourhoods. This project applies methods from geoscience and software engineering to the process of identification of those neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods, by nature, are defined by connec- tivity, centrality and similarity. Transport and geospatial datasets are used to detect the characteristics of places. An unsupervised learning algorithm is then applied to sort places according to their characteris- tics and detect areas with similar make up: the neighbourhood. The at- tributes can be static like land use or space syntax attributes as well as dynamic like transportation patterns over the course of a day. An un- supervised learning algorithm called Self Organizing Map is applied to project this high dimensional space constituting of places and their attributes to a two dimensional space where proximity is similarity and patterns can be detected – the neighbourhoods. To summarize, the proposed approach yields interesting insights into the structure of the urban fabric generated by human movement, interactions and the built environment. The approach represents a quantitative approach to ur- ban analysis. It reveals that the city is not a polychotomy of neigh- bourhoods but that neighbourhoods overlap and don’t have a sharp edge.

summary In this study, a visualization tool that maps outdoor physical activity such as runs on a map by specifying time, location, activity, gender, age group, etc. is created. This tool reveals the usage patterns of streets within a city for outdoor physical activity. This tool is created within a larger research project that investigates the influence of streets on the leisure walking activity within cities. For this purpose, the tool is capable of presenting the collected multi-modal data that includes personal fitness data, weather data, spatial data, and crime data. Moreover, the tool creates new analysis capabilities such as displaying usage of streets by urban joggers. The research project in which this tool will be used is aimed for designers/planners to improve streets for 'runnability'.

summary Being located in a hot, humid and arid bioregion, as well as having a unique religious and social context, the Gulf Cooperation Council cities pose significant challenges to the achievement of sustainable urban development. Using native neighborhoods in Abu Dhabi as a case study, this ongoing research aims to develop a design methodology which utilizes both qualitative and quantitative analysis towards the holistic, feedback driven design of new neighborhood typologies for the native population. This paper focuses on the methodology and application of a water use module which measures neighborhood scale indoor and outdoor water use, an area of simulation critical to developing sustainable neighborhoods for Arab cities, yet underrepresented within the literature. The water module comprises one part of a larger toolkit that aims to measure both environmental sustainability as well as social and cultural factors unique to the context of Abu Dhabi and the gulf region.

summary Considering the variety of digital tools available nowadays and the growth of their possible uses in architecture and urbanism,, we propose to study their potential as auxiliary tools in the process of urban design, based on their ability to help understand and take part in complex projects that are currently out of reach, technically or literally, to the general population. This article analyzes the origins and the theoretical framework behind urban planning in the Brazilian contemporary cities, currently based on Euclidean Zoning, and the processes of connecting contributions from participatory process and digital tools into city-planning level decisions. attempting to have a closer look into the questions behind a new proposal of planning, on a non-euclidean way, where the urban parameters could be evaluated and defined individually for each plot, based on a set of parameters that vary gradually and are dynamic in nature.

summary High tech industries are playing an important role in the economic development in the United States. While some cities are shrinking, the "innovation" cities are growing. The attributes that cause some cities to successfully become innovative is a very relevant 21st century topic and will be investigated here.Previous work conduct city analysis through conventional government GIS or census data but such analyses do not answer questions about the perception of citizens inhabiting the city, and the activities they conduct. The novelty of this current project is to make use of large-scale bottom-up data available from social media. Several social media sources-CrunchBase, Twitter, Yelp, and Flickr- were data mined pertaining to four innovation districts in Boston. We found that the success of innovation districts in Boston were correlated with several important variables: the most successful districts tended to occur near research institutions, in very "mixed use" areas, and were unexpectedly not correlated with land and labor prices, unlike technology districts in the past. Based on our study, we make recommendations for the urban design that cities should put in place to increase the potential for "innovation".

summary Cities are continuously produced through entropic processes that mediate between complex networked systems and the immediacy urban life. Emergent media technologies inform new relationships between information and matter, code and space to redefine new urban ecosystems. Modes of perceiving, experiencing and inhabiting cities are radically changing along with a radical transformation of the tools that we use to design. Cities as complex and systemic organisms require approaches that engage new multi-scalar strategies to connect the physical layer with the system of networked ecologies. This paper aims at investigating emerging and novel forms of reading and producing urban spaces reimagining the physical city through intelligent and mediated processes. Through data agency and responsive urban processes, the design methodology explored the materialization of a temporary pneumatic structure and membrane that tested material performance through fabrication and sensing practices through the pneuSENSE project developed in July 2016 in New York at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the 'HyperCities' IaaC- Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia - Global Summer School.

summary This article delineates the process of developing the project "Urbanimals" - an interactive installation designed and realised in Bristol, UK, in 2015. As the case study research, it draws attention to the difficulties in designing interactive structures in urban spaces - from an architects' idea to a construction stage. There are four areas that are being investigated: (1) Modelling interactions, (2) Negotiating locations and logistics, (3) Developing hardware and (4) Performing the on-site observations. The project draws from the idea of Smart City (SC) as the concept of the urban environment with a certain level of responsiveness through implementing a technology-driven matter that expands city offer perceivable, but gentle and not hindering way. It highlights the possible applications of projection technology and the utilisation of the 3D modelling software which provides complex tools for creating animations, movements and interactions with future users. The article gives clues how to design more engaging interactions and how to deal with implementing them in public realm.

summary The cultural heritage landscape (CHL) of the urban space in cities is the result of multiple layers of complexity, encompassing both the tangible built environment and intangible cultural values that together influence the living heritage that forms the spirit of place. This paper explores the gap in the intangible and living heritage documentation of CHLs by using a section of public space in the medieval historic centre of Bologna, Italy. Digital technology is used to propose a new paradigm in the study of the complex link between the tangible, intangible and living cultural heritage, co-existing in public spaces of a city’s cultural heritage landscape.

summary The aim of this paper is to present the partial results of the project "La ciudad inteligente; un palimpsesto digital", which is currently being developed. The project focuses into the emerging paradigm of Smart cities from a regional perspective, transcending the timeless notion of urban-rural dichotomy, to focus on the territory as an integral cultural landscape. Reflection, but also experimentation on specific social-based technological applications applied to territory studies, constitute an essential tool in building the reality of a smart city. From the design and implementation of a strategic action plan designed to be completed in four years, this paper shows objectives, theoretical basis, used tools and partial results of the experiment carried out in the Paisaje Industrial Fray Bentos, recently declared "World Heritage" by UNESCO.

summary When considering architectural and urban responses to autonomous mobility, it becomes evident that the future strategies will have to include a significant transformation to the built environment, particularly the ways it operates and interacts with inhabitants. Designers will not only need to rethink formal and functional arrangements but also, and perhaps primarily, consider the environment--buildings and cities--as active and equal actors with adaptive and autonomous behaviors similarly to those people or self-driving cars manifest. This paper discusses initial planning and design strategies for the integration of autonomous vehicles and other forms of autonomous mobility into the built environment. Specifically, it looks into necessary steps required to develop infrastructure to a level of autonomy that can facilitate a next generation of wayfinding and mobility. A growing research area into smaller personal mobility vehicles that would revolutionize elderly and disabled mobility brings to the light the major technical challenges present in current building infrastructure.

summary The topic "Crowdthinking" reveals the inquiries of researchers about collaborative work, distributed intelligence and collective research. The call focuses on transdisciplinary thinking as a construct based on multiplicity and diversity. All these topics are essential not only in the field of design and architecture, but also in emerging areas of human sciences and arts . Currently, the collaborative design is considered one of the key bases for change in the city and society. In its genesis, it manifests the notion that the world around us is inadequate for many of the needs of the society and from that design can be collectively improved. Such collective research, by combining distributed intelligence, sustainable social development, design cutting edge research, theories and computational strategies, generates a research partnership based on participation and distributed cognition of complex problems. This call proposes an approach in which the results of the experiences can build a model, define or apply axioms and lead to applications. It also looks for emerging conjectures about the process, the creation of computer models and the behaviour of the resulting designs. On the other hand, the need to find solutions that improve the quality of life for the community and sustainable development includes concerns about the integration of the physical and cultural context of cities, mass education and the inclusion of parametric design, digital manufacturing and digital prototyping, and BIM as a system that organizes and ensures the correspondence between the physical urban design and sustainable archetypes. These are some of the concerns in which technology has been contributing to improve the design process by integrating information. This integration optimizes resources and enables the various project professionals to work on the same model, run simulations, improve materializations and evaluate massive amount of data. Projects with greater social and environmental responsibility can be achieved adopting into the teaching and practice this new way of design that anticipates an extensive exchange that wilt foster self-evaluation and reformulation of educational paradigms.

summary The paper analyses the emerging senses from the Smart Cities phenomenon, using as background Lemos (2017), Maia (2013), Rozestraten (2016), Söderström, Paache & Klauser (2014) and evaluating the speeches found in the SmartCity Expo Curitiba. We identified three basic senses: the binary utopia/ficcion, business and informational city, discussed by philosophers such as Foucault (2017), Lévy (2011) e Harvey (2014). The results outline the importance of political role of technology and adverts that it must not be controlled by business. Finally, the paper concludes that the smartest technology is one that opens space to the inclusion of greater human expressivity and subjectivity, not inducing a space of control.

summary A cost-driven design optimisation is introduced through two case studies: 1) a design prototype of a large scale housing com- munity for social mix of its tenants in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and 2) the one of a luxurious high-rise condominium with maintaining a de- cent level of its maintenance fee in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. For both cases, the computation of the optimisation was performed with re- gards to targeted financial concerns which are as following: 1) mar- keting value, construction cost, and government subsidy (incentives) for the case in Addis Ababa and 2) maintenance fee and construction cost for the case in Honolulu. Design factors are employed as a guide for computational outcomes in the optimisation of both architectural problems. The computational outcomes become the basis for project- ing three-dimensional forms as design alternatives. Its application process is delineated within the integrated environment of parametric modelling applications.

summary Within the contemporary condition, turbulence that confronts architecture is no longer unpredictable weather patterns or wild beasts, but the unintended forces of a constantly connected digital infrastructure that demands constant attention. If, as Mark Wigley puts it, “architecture is always constructed in and against a storm” it is time for architecture to reevaluate its ability to separate us from a new storm-one that situates technology, global connectivity, human, non-human and composite users, and algorithmic architecture itself as new weather systems. Toward this end, this paper explores architecture’s ability to mediate and produce algorithmic turbulence generated through image-based sensing of the built environment. Through a close reading of Le Corbusier’s Urbanisme, we argue that for much of the 20th and the early part of the 21st century, cities have been designed to produce diagrams of smooth and homogenous flows. However, distributed personal technologies produce virtual layers that unevenly map onto the city, resulting in turbulent forces that computational platforms aim to conceal behind a visual narrative of accuracy, cohesion, anticipation, and order. By focusing on SIFT algorithms and their ability to extract n-dimensional vectors from two-dimensional images, this research explores computational workflows that mobilize turbulence towards the production of indeterminate form. These forms demarcate a new kind of challenge for both architecture and the city, whereby a cultural appetite to deploy algorithms that produce a smooth and seamless image of the world comes hand in hand with the turbulent and disruptive autonomy of those very same algorithms. By revisiting Urbanisme, a new set of architectural objectives are established that contextualize SIFTS within an urban agenda.

summary The more complex our cities become, the more difficult it is for designers to use traditional tools for understanding and analyzing the inner essence of an eco-system such as the contemporary urban environment. Even many of the recently crafted digital tools fail to address the necessity for a more holistic design approach which captures the virtual and the physical, the immaterial and the material. Handling of massive chunks of information and classification and assessment of diverse data are nowadays more crucial than ever before. We see a significant potential in combining the fields of composition in music and architecture through the use of information technology. Merging the two fields has the intense potential to release new, innovative tools for urban designers. This article describes an innovative tool developed at the Technical University of Crete, through which an urban designer can work on the music transcription of a specific urban environment applying music compositional rules and filters in order to identify discordant entities, highlight imbalanced parts, and make design corrections. summary New operation frameworks and user-oriented design methods are needed to make better use of new innovative technologies within smart city contexts. This paper addresses the design and research of intelligent lighting and user-oriented services for smart city environments. It presents the problem setting and research and development methods of the SenCity project. The project will pilot smart lighting solutions in six Finnish cities in different kinds of urban environments. In the pilots, the target is to employ lighting infrastructure as a service platform - an Internet of Things backbone - in the intelligent city. Together, separate pilots in different cities around Finland will create a living lab ecosystem for developing and testing innovative solutions. The specific objective of this paper is to present the concept of a platform as defined and applied in SenCity project. The presented framework forms an operational model for creating intelligent lighting and digital services in smart cities by integrating relevant technologies, users' needs, and business into an interactive system. In the paper, the framework is applied to a selection of pilot cases with specific themes to introduce its usability in real world implementations.

summary People have started spending time with digital tools and virtual worlds to escape reality's horrors. However, designed spaces are more than the players' needs, especially those digital games that their stories involve urban environments. This inefficiency causes spending futile efforts both in time and cost for the digital games' productions; The urban environments in these digital games are replicas of real-world cities. Some companies use some techniques for downgrading replicas. Therefore, this study aims to uncover the used techniques for designing Tom Clancy's The Division (2016). By using reverse engineering methodology and qualitative comparative analysis, the in-game map compared with the real-world map. Based on the results, the used techniques allowed the designers to scale down the game environment to be 2.5 times smaller than the actual city. Rather, verisimilitude is achieved by combining sufficiently accurate elements to give the impression of complete accuracy. By implementing the results of this research, designers can develop smaller replicas to be perceived as more extensive.
