summary While nonlinear concepts are widely applied in analysis and generative design in architecture, they have not yet convincingly translated into the material realm of fabrication and construction. As the gap between digital design model, shop drawing, and fabricated result continues to diminish, we seek to learn from fabrication models and natural systems that do not separate code, geometry, pattern, material compliance, communication, and form, but rather operate within dynamic loops of feedback, reciprocity, and generative fabrication. Three distinct, but connected problems: 1) Robotic ink drawing; 2) Robotic wine pouring and object detection; and 3) Dynamically Adjusted Extrusion; were addressed to develop a toolkit including software, custom digital design tools, and hardware for robotic fabrication and user interaction in cyber-physical contexts. Our primary aim is to simplify and consolidate the multiple platforms necessary to construct feedback networks for robotic fabrication into a central and intuitive programming environment for both the advanced to novice user. Our experimentation in prototyping feedback networks for use with robotics in design practice suggests that the application of this knowledge often follows a remarkably consistent profile. By exploiting these redundancies, we developed a support toolkit of data structures and routines that provide simple integrated software for the user-friendly programming of commonly used roles and functionalities in dynamic robotic fabrication, thus promoting a methodology of feedback-oriented design processes.

summary This paper presents progress in the development of practical applications for graph representations of meshes for a variety of problems relevant to generative architectural design (GAD). In previous work (Nejur and Steinfeld 2016), the authors demonstrated that while approaches to marrying mesh and graph representations drawn from computer graphics (CG) can be effective within the domains of applications for which they have been developed, they have not adequately addressed wider classes of problems in GAD. There, the authors asserted that a generalized framework for working with graph representations of meshes can effectively bring recent advances in mesh segmentation to bear on GAD problems, a utility demonstrated through the development of a plug-in for the visual programming environment Grasshopper. Here, we describe a number of implemented solutions to mesh segmentation and transformation problems, articulated as a series of additional features developed as a part of this same software. Included are problems of mesh segmentation approached through the creation of acyclic connected graphs (trees); problems of mesh transformations, such as those that unfold a segmented mesh in anticipation of fabrication; and problems of geometry generation in relation to a segmented mesh, as demonstrated through a generalized approach to mesh weaving. We present these features in the context of their potential applications in GAD and provide a limited set of examples for their use.

title Design Considerations Due to Scale Effects in 3D Concrete Printing

summary The effect of scale on different parameters of the 3D printing of concrete is explored through the design and fabrication of a 3D concrete printed pavilion. This study shows a significant gap exists between what can be generated through computer aided design (CAD) and subsequent computer aided manufacturing (generally based on CNC technology). In reality, the 3D concrete printing on the one hand poses manufacturing constraints (e.g. minimum curvature radii) due to material behaviour that is not included in current CAD/CAM software. On the other hand, the process also takes advantage of material behaviour and thus allows the creation of shapes and geometries that, too, can’t be modelled and predicted by CAD/CAM software. Particularly in the 3D printing of concrete, there is not a 1:1 relation between toolpath and printed product, as is the case with CNC milling. Material deposition is dependent on system pressure, robot speed, nozzle section, layer stacking, curvature and more – all of which are scale dependent. This paper will discuss the design and manufacturing decisions based on the effects of scale on the structural design, printed and layered geometry, robot kinematics, material behaviour, assembly joints and logistical problems. Finally, by analysing a case study pavilion, it will be explore how 3D concrete printing structures can be extended and multiplied across scales and functional domains ranging from structural to architectural elements, so that we can understand how to address questions of scale in their design.

summary This paper details a pedagogical project which calls for an improved design performance of the existing built environment through the use of smart technology and data-driven design. The project is an investigation into ways in which to improve the performance of a ‘pre-selected university building’ through the use of a media facade that allows for interactive experiences. Existing problems of the selected building have been identified through observation and research using a rich picture and agile approach. An underutilised staircase was selected as the focus site for a series of computational design and interactive design studies. The brief of this mini-research project aims to encourage more people to use the stairs and create a memorable experience with a technological approach through the application of a site specific interactive media installation. The project is an interactive staircase which utilises LED strips and generative sound. The project features a series of light boxes which are connected to the existing staircase balustrade. Arduino, passive infra-red sensors, and other motion detection sensors were used to allow for light and generative sound interaction with users using visual scripting tools and a generative design platform. Sensing technology was used as a real-time data-gathering device during the site analysis phase as well as an input device for the designed prototype to allow the testing of the data-driven design. This paper details the study and resultant interactive prototypes. It also discusses the exploration of performance based design ideas into design workflows and the integration of sensing tools into the design process. It concludes by identifying possible implications on using the Internet of Things concepts to facilitate the design of interactive architecture.

summary New advances in 3D modelling and visualization tools for large-scale landscape and construction projects have been achieved recently. The introduction of the new 3D digital modelling and visualization tools, e.g. CAD, VR, GIS and BIM initiated a huge shift in the way planners and designers develop, communicate and present project scenarios. This paper outlines the challenges, new trends and workflows connected to the use of new tools and how it’s been practiced and experienced by professionals and stakeholders as observed in Norway. The observation shows that the latest developments are providing new potentials for performing better communication and collaboration. Planners could now demonstrate many aspects of a project which exceed the usual minimum requirements. An important functionality is the capability to work with huge amount of data-sets for large-scale projects which were previously almost impossible to work with.

summary Within the contemporary condition, turbulence that confronts architecture is no longer unpredictable weather patterns or wild beasts, but the unintended forces of a constantly connected digital infrastructure that demands constant attention. If, as Mark Wigley puts it, “architecture is always constructed in and against a storm” it is time for architecture to reevaluate its ability to separate us from a new storm-one that situates technology, global connectivity, human, non-human and composite users, and algorithmic architecture itself as new weather systems. Toward this end, this paper explores architecture’s ability to mediate and produce algorithmic turbulence generated through image-based sensing of the built environment. Through a close reading of Le Corbusier’s Urbanisme, we argue that for much of the 20th and the early part of the 21st century, cities have been designed to produce diagrams of smooth and homogenous flows. However, distributed personal technologies produce virtual layers that unevenly map onto the city, resulting in turbulent forces that computational platforms aim to conceal behind a visual narrative of accuracy, cohesion, anticipation, and order. By focusing on SIFT algorithms and their ability to extract n-dimensional vectors from two-dimensional images, this research explores computational workflows that mobilize turbulence towards the production of indeterminate form. These forms demarcate a new kind of challenge for both architecture and the city, whereby a cultural appetite to deploy algorithms that produce a smooth and seamless image of the world comes hand in hand with the turbulent and disruptive autonomy of those very same algorithms. By revisiting Urbanisme, a new set of architectural objectives are established that contextualize SIFTS within an urban agenda.

summary Design is “something that we do” that is related to our unique human condition as creative individuals, so as “making” is related to how we manifest and impress that uniqueness into our surrounding environment. As designers, the way we impress our ideas into the material world is tightly connected to a ‘continuous creative performance’ and with concepts often missing in digital design and fabrication techniques –yet present in analog processes - such as ambiguity, improvisation and imprecision. In this paper, a model of human-machine interaction is proposed, that seeks to transcend the ‘hylomorphic’ model imperative in today’s digital architectural design practice to a more performative and reciprocal form of computational making. By using body gestures and imbuing fabrication machines with behaviour, the research seeks to embrace the concept of ‘performance and error’ as promoters of creativity and cognition about the things we create, installing human as the bond of the interrelations between designing and making.

summary This paper describes a method for estimating pedestrian traffic volume by using video cameras. In the Umeda underground mall in Osaka City, we estimated the traffic volume without tracking technology and while protecting pedestrian's privacy. We developed an original algorithm that roughly estimates the traffic volume of pedestrians from sequential images of video cameras. We focused on a line on each image cut out from video and made a new image which shows the spatiotemporal distribution of pedestrians. We defined this image as 'time historical image of pedestrian spots (THIPS)'. In a THIPS, a pedestrian is regarded as a cluster of connected pixels with the same label. We captured the spatiotemporal distribution of pedestrians by using these images. We found that this algorithm requires a THIPS to estimate the number of pedestrians who passed the spot for a few minutes and plural THIPSs to estimate their traveling directions. Finally, we concluded that this algorithm is an efficient means of estimating pedestrian traffic volume.

summary With the development of advance fabrication, several digi- tal fabrication approaches have been developed. These approaches en- able better form exploration than the conventional manufacturing pro- cess. But, the built examples mostly rely on advance machinery which was not familiar or available in developed country where construction workers are still abundant. Meanwhile, much knowledge gathers in the field practice. This research is aimed to explore an alternative con- struction workflow and method with the combination of mass custom- ization and conventional construction method and to propose the structure system that emphasized this alternative workflow and meth- od. Lattice structure was proposed. The conventional construction method was used in the struts production and mass customization method, laser cutting, and was used for connection production. The algorithmic process was used mainly for data mining, details design, and component production. The backtracking was needed to be pre- dicted and addressed previously. Considerations that will be needed to be tested by further example are on the transition from the digital pro- cess to the manual process. Next research could be for analysing the other engineering aspect for this prototype and suggesting other struc- tural system with more optimal combination of conventional construc- tion and mass customization.

title Sensory material architectures: Concepts and methodologies for spatial tectonics and tactile responsivity in knitted textile hybrid structures

summary As the knowledge of material computation advances, continuing the seamless integration of design and fabrication, questions beyond materialization can be addressed with a focus on sensing, feedback, and engagement as critical factors of design exploration. This article will discuss a series of prototypes, design methodologies, and technologies that articulate a textile’s micro-architecture, at the scale of fibers and stitches, to instrumentalize simultaneous structural, spatial, and sensory-responsive qualities. The progression of research displays an ever-deepening instrumentalization of fiber structure and its implications to form definition and responsivity, in creating form- and bending-active structures. The research results in a more refined definition of material behavior as the innate phenomena which emerge at the moment of textile fabrication. Ultimately, the architecture, in its materiality and physical, visual, and auditory responsivity, is designed to address specific challenges for children in filtering multiple sensory inputs, an underlying factor of autism spectrum disorder.

summary This paper explains a method will be used during a workshop for constructing complex-curved geometry with quad edge panels. In this workshop, we demonstrate that quad-edge mesh data structure can efficiently be used to construct complex large shapes. With hands-on experiments, we will show a vast variety of shapes can be constructed using square, rectangular, parallelogram and extruded-line shaped panels. In addition, using a system we have recently developed to unfold polygonal mesh, we will demonstrate how desired shapes can be constructed by using laser-cut quadrilateral panels. This approach is particularly suitable to construct complicated sculptural and architectural shapes from anisotropic materials that can only be bended in one direction.

summary We build on previous technological developments in CAAD by looking into parametric design exploration and the development of the concept of parametricism. We use the phenomenological backdrop to account for our physical experiences and encounters as well as our mental ones; both evident in the link between parametric design as a process and an outcome. In specific, we previously examined two particular metaphors. The first metaphor addressed aspects of virtual environments that resemble our physical world; In other words, computer model as physical model and digital world as material world. In this volume, we extend the exploration into aspects of virtual environments and their resemblance to physical environments by looking at ‘performance’ aspects: the way in which environments are sensed, measured, tracked and visualised. Moreover, we reflect on matters and materiality in both virtual and physical space philosophically, theoretically, practically and reflectively. The second metaphor looked into the modes and means of interaction between our bodies and such virtual environment. Here we extend the investigation to look at the ways in which measures of environmental performance influence human interaction in real environments. The exploration takes us further to look into the area of design fabrication of the built environment, and methods in which developed processes meet environmental performance requirements, and the innovative outcomes that lead to disruptive technologies getting introduced into design and we revisit parametric design under this focus area.

summary This paper describes the development of a workflow for the production of a net zero off-grid research cabin.  The workflow deploys a number of affiliated parametric software packages as a form finding tool for the exterior envelope of this structure, with a focus on passive solar design as a generative formal driver. The design was required to incorporate the spatial and programmatic needs of the users in a compact, barrier free, net zero building. Simultaneously, the research question asked the designers to harness the potential of digital design in the consideration of future fabrication techniques, in order to optimize the building’s performance and the speed and quality of assembly once the project moves into construction. Parameters considered include solar exposure, external surface area, cost, fabrication, functionality, and aesthetic criteria. This project was developed by a multidisciplinary team of graduate students at the University of Calgary.

summary Fibre composites are synthetic in their composition, but structured similarly to biological materials, as fibre and matrix. While the fibre constituent in Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is mostly used under the form of fabrics, its standard fabrication processes do not rely on its inherent textile attributes. Embedding the fabric qualities in the fabrication of architectural FRP can potentially introduce concepts and properties of biological materials into engineered fibre composites; it can promote and enable the generation of an architectural complexity of a biological nature. The paper presents Fabric Materiality as a framework for a new design and fabrication process and demonstrates through a case study its integration in the fabrication of architectural FRP elements to achieve a complex structure with bio-inspired properties.

summary This paper investigates the potential of behavioral construction strategies for architectural production through the design and robotic fabrication of three-dimensional woven structures inspired by the behavioral fabrication logic used by the weaverbird during the construction of its nest. Initial research development led to the design of an adaptive robotic fabrication framework composed of an online agent-based system, a custom weaving end-effector and a coordinated sensing strategy utilizing 3D scanning.The outcome of the behavioral weaving process could not be predetermined a priori in a digital model, but rather emerged out of the negotiation among design intentions, fabrication constraints, performance criteria, material behaviors and specific site conditions. The key components of the system and their role in the fabrication process are presented both theoretically and technically, while the project serves as a case study of a robotic production method envisioned as a soft system: a flexible and adaptable framework in which the moment of design unfolds simultaneously with fabrication, informed by a constant flow of sensory information.

summary The complex nature of architecture requires often planning teams with specialists from multiple disciplines. Architectural education however, addresses this interdisciplinary modus operandi rarely. This paper presents the design and production process of a real world solar façade installation realized at the University of Kassel to illustrating the potentials of such an approach. Interdisciplinary teamwork allowed students not only to solve complex problems, but also to produce knowledge and to advance into design research. Student exploration resulted in a unique fabrication technique, combining tensile fabric and resin to facilitate the fabrication of multifunctional, monocoque shells; combining all necessary technical components in a single building element. This paper discusses the success of student collaboration and teaching strategies for key parts of the design process at different scales. Moreover, it highlights the importance of physical form-finding models and an analogue - digital workflow for collaborative communication. The Free Skin project offers both insight into applied use of interdisciplinary teamwork, and a proposal for incorporating such collaboration into architectural education.

summary Beaver dams are formed by two main processes. One is that beavers select proper woods for constructing. The other one is that streams aggregate those woods to be assembled. Using this approach to construction structure is suitable for natural environment. In this paper, we attempt to develop a construction process which is suitable for all-terrain construction robot in the future. This construction process is inspired by beavers' construction behavior in nature. Beavers select proper sticks to make the structure stable. We predict that particular properties of sticks contribute gravity-driven assembly of wood structure. Thus, we implement the system with machine learning to find proper properties of sticks to improve selection mechanism of construction process. During this construction process, 3D scanner on robotic arm scans and recognizes sticks on terrain, and then robot will select proper sticks and place them. After placement, the system will scan and record the results for learning mechanism.

summary Megalithic civilizations held tremendous knowledge surrounding the deceivingly simple task of moving heavy objects. Much of this knowledge has been lost to us from the past. This paper mines, extracts, and experiments with this knowledge to test what applications and resonance it holds with contemporary digital practice. As an experiment, a sixteen-foot tall megalith is designed, computed, and constructed to walk horizontally and stand vertically with little effort. Testing this prototype raises many questions about the relationship between form and physics. In addition, it projects practical application of such reciprocity between architectural desires and the computation of an object’s center of mass. This research contributes to ongoing efforts around the integration of physics-based solvers into the design process. It goes beyond the assumption of statics as a solution in order to ask questions about what potentials mass can contribute to the assembly and erecting of architectures to come. It engages a megalithic way of thinking which requires an intimate relationship between designer and center of mass. In doing so, it questions conventional disciplinary notions of stasis and efficiency.
