summary The task of geography is to establish a critical system which embraces the phenomenology of space in order to grasp all of its meaning in the varied terrestrial scene (Sauer 1925). Brownfields are a global geographic concern that have been considerably researched within the universal discourse. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and its tools have been widely used to enhance and optimize urban plans during both design and implementation phases. Nonetheless, the connection between the two is often broken. While greenfield development enjoys the employment and implementation of a wide array of CAD tools, brownfield redevelopment projects are still struggling with traditional planning and management methods. Looking at the association between sustainable brownfield redevelopment and the optimization of CAD tools and software in the city of Amman, Jordan, the paper attempts to shed light on the unfulfilled potentials of advancement the spatial tools have to offer to the ongoing quest for sustainable urban development on the local scale and the global debate around the urban paradox on the wider scheme. Using empirical data collected and processed in response to the problem posed, the results indicate a CAD-based model could streamline sustainable brownfield development and save substantial time and resources which would otherwise be required using traditional methods. The paper therefore argues that the need for a comprehensive computer aided intervention for the development and management of marginal and overlooked geographies of brownfields in the city of Amman is long overdue.

summary The increasing population size of cities makes the urban fabric ever more complex and more disintegrated into smaller areas, called neighbourhoods. This project applies methods from geoscience and software engineering to the process of identification of those neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods, by nature, are defined by connec- tivity, centrality and similarity. Transport and geospatial datasets are used to detect the characteristics of places. An unsupervised learning algorithm is then applied to sort places according to their characteris- tics and detect areas with similar make up: the neighbourhood. The at- tributes can be static like land use or space syntax attributes as well as dynamic like transportation patterns over the course of a day. An un- supervised learning algorithm called Self Organizing Map is applied to project this high dimensional space constituting of places and their attributes to a two dimensional space where proximity is similarity and patterns can be detected – the neighbourhoods. To summarize, the proposed approach yields interesting insights into the structure of the urban fabric generated by human movement, interactions and the built environment. The approach represents a quantitative approach to ur- ban analysis. It reveals that the city is not a polychotomy of neigh- bourhoods but that neighbourhoods overlap and don’t have a sharp edge.

summary Aristotle in his treatise, On the Soul, defined memory as knowledge of the past, obtained through seeing, sensing, observing, listening and learning. Memory can be envisaged as the mental imprint of an image that can be recalled through the experience of existing objects and places. How is cultural heritage related to the experience and knowledge called memory? Why do memories appear to have a strong influence in unconscious spatial perception? How can visualisation techniques activate heritage-memory? Buildings, as tangible elements of the historic city, disclose the memories of the past into the present, and direct us to an experience of time through matter. Buildings serve as a link bridging the past with the present, and eventually, the future sites of memory. Their fabric is constantly altered with engraved layers of historical change, a sequence of past events which emerge from the remnants of their structure. The past, imprinted on the city’s artefacts, manifests its tangible form, and through a new reading of heritage, as ‘heritage-memory’, immaterial qualities of previous eras can perhaps be revealed. This paper, part of an ongoing research situated in between theory and practice, argues that the immaterial elements of cultural heritage emerging from historic urban spaces, can be critically explored in a new way through the use of digital technology, as a tool to revisualise the memory of a locus. Taking Chambers Street in the Old Town of Edinburgh as a site of focus, this presentation demonstrates several steps towards visualising the heritage-memory of the site. The paper poses the question of how the site might serve as a memorial itself, revealing to the observer the knowledge of past events engraved on its locus. Chambers Street serves as a paradigm of constructing a virtual narrative of heritage-memory, examining the site in parts and whole.

summary Finding an attractive or best-fit neighborhood for a new resident of any city is not only important from the perspective of the resident him or herself, but has larger implications for developers and city planners. The environment or mood of the right neighborhood is not simply created through traditional characteristics such as income, crime, or zoning regulations - more ephemeral traits related to user-perception also have significant weight. Using datasets and tools previously unassociated with real-estate decision-making and neighborhood planning, such as social media and machine learning, we create a non-deterministic and customized way of discovering and understanding neighborhoods. Our project creates a customizable ranking system for the 195 neighborhoods in New York City that helps users find the one that best matches their preferences. Our team has developed a composite weighted score with urban spatial data and social media data to rank all NYC neighborhoods based on a series of questions asked to the user. The project's contribution is to provide a scientific and calibrated understanding of the impact that socially oriented activities and preferences have towards the uses of space.

summary This project applies techniques in machine learning, specifically generative adversarial networks (or GANs), to produce synthetic images intended to capture the predominant visual properties of urban places. We propose that imaging cities in this manner represents the first computational approach to documenting the Genius Loci of a city (Norberg-Schulz, 1980), which is understood to include those forms, textures, colors, and qualities of light that exemplify a particular urban location and that set it apart from similar places. Presented here are methods for the collection of urban image data, for the necessary processing and formatting of this data, and for the training of two known computational statistical models (StyleGAN (Karras et al., 2018) and Pix2Pix (Isola et al., 2016)) that identify visual patterns distinct to a given site and that reproduce these patterns to generate new images. These methods have been applied to image nine distinct urban contexts across six cities in the US and Europe, the results of which are presented here. While the product of this work is not a tool for the design of cities or building forms, but rather a method for the synthetic imaging of existing places, we nevertheless seek to situate the work in terms of computer-assisted design (CAD). In this regard, the project is demonstrative of a new approach to CAD tools. In contrast with existing tools that seek to capture the explicit intention of their user (Aish, Glynn, Sheil 2017), in applying computational statistical methods to the production of images that speak to the implicit qualities that constitute a place, this project demonstrates the unique advantages offered by such methods in capturing and expressing the tacit.

summary High tech industries are playing an important role in the economic development in the United States. While some cities are shrinking, the "innovation" cities are growing. The attributes that cause some cities to successfully become innovative is a very relevant 21st century topic and will be investigated here.Previous work conduct city analysis through conventional government GIS or census data but such analyses do not answer questions about the perception of citizens inhabiting the city, and the activities they conduct. The novelty of this current project is to make use of large-scale bottom-up data available from social media. Several social media sources-CrunchBase, Twitter, Yelp, and Flickr- were data mined pertaining to four innovation districts in Boston. We found that the success of innovation districts in Boston were correlated with several important variables: the most successful districts tended to occur near research institutions, in very "mixed use" areas, and were unexpectedly not correlated with land and labor prices, unlike technology districts in the past. Based on our study, we make recommendations for the urban design that cities should put in place to increase the potential for "innovation".

summary Cities are continuously produced through entropic processes that mediate between complex networked systems and the immediacy urban life. Emergent media technologies inform new relationships between information and matter, code and space to redefine new urban ecosystems. Modes of perceiving, experiencing and inhabiting cities are radically changing along with a radical transformation of the tools that we use to design. Cities as complex and systemic organisms require approaches that engage new multi-scalar strategies to connect the physical layer with the system of networked ecologies. This paper aims at investigating emerging and novel forms of reading and producing urban spaces reimagining the physical city through intelligent and mediated processes. Through data agency and responsive urban processes, the design methodology explored the materialization of a temporary pneumatic structure and membrane that tested material performance through fabrication and sensing practices through the pneuSENSE project developed in July 2016 in New York at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the 'HyperCities' IaaC- Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia - Global Summer School.

summary Weather data plays an important role for energy perfor- mance assessment in the design of buildings and urban environments. Many researches have been carried out to generate and analyse vari- ous weather files for different simulation platforms. However, investi- gations have been lacking in the development of weather files that ac- count for urban heat island (UHI) problems. As a result of global warming and the complexity of the urban environment, the weather file for a modern city cannot be simply based on climate information from 20 years ago. The objective of this research is to demonstrate a method for creating different micro-scale typical meteorological year (TMY) weather files based on different urban texture values. This re- search includes three steps: 1) Recent years weather data is obtained. 2) Considering the UHI impact, a series of new TMY weather files are generated for different micro-scale areas in Singapore based on rele- vant urban texture variables. 3) A comparison of the results shows that there is a big difference between the new and the old TMY. The tem- perature of the new TMY is 1-2°C higher, while the solar radiation is lower than the original TMY data. Hence the new weather files will be more credible than the original TMY for energy performance simula- tion in the design process.

summary This study investigates the relationships of field observa- tion, multi-agent simulation and space-syntax theory in spatial config- uration for developing design strategy for a case study, a tourist hub area in Musi Riverside, Palembang. Having such potential advantage and to tackle existing social and urban issues, our study developed a design approach based on multi-agent simulation enhanced by space syntax theory. The goal of this study is a deep understanding of multi agent simulation through mechanism of validation using field obser- vation and by taking into account the existing urban features. The purpose is to develop design strategy of pedestrian-centric urban space to be functioned as a tourist hub based on computational modelling. Following the paths result of pedestrian flow by multi-agents simula- tion, we elaborated the analysis of facility programming by means of Space Syntax theory. It shows the ranking of facility programs based on their relative connectivity and integration. By merging this result, it assembles programs and their circulation spaces by means of compu- tational simulation. Experimenting in both fields show a novel ap- proach for pedestrian-centric design in urban scale, particularly since behavioural models rarely used in early stage of design process. It shows that multi-agent simulation should be coupled with field obser- vation.

summary Ubiquitous computing enables us to decipher the biosphere’s anthropogenic dimension, what we call the Urbansphere (Pasquero and Poletto 2020). This machinic perspective unveils a new postanthropocentric reality, where the impact of artificial systems on the natural biosphere is indeed global, but their agency is no longer entirely human. This paper explores a protocol to design the Urbansphere, or what we may call the urbanization of the nonhuman, titled DeepGreen. With the development of DeepGreen, we are testing the potential to bring the interdependence of digital and biological intelligence to the core of architectural and urban design research. This is achieved by developing a new biocomputational design workflow that enables the pairing of what is algorithmically drawn with what is biologically grown (Pasquero and Poletto 2016). In other words, and more in detail, the paper will illustrate how generative adversarial network (GAN) algorithms (Radford, Metz, and Soumith 2015) can be trained to “behave” like a Physarum polycephalum, a unicellular organism endowed with surprising computational abilities and self-organizing behaviors that have made it popular among scientist and engineers alike (Adamatzky 2010) (Fig. 1). The trained GAN_Physarum is deployed as an urban design technique to test the potential of polycephalum intelligence in solving problems of urban remetabolization and in computing scenarios of urban morphogenesis within a nonhuman conceptual framework.

The response of architecture to the public space needs to consider hybrid spaces that combine digital and physical, representations, allowing urban experiences that are enhanced by virtual data imprinted on existing physical information. The study of these aspects may be the purpose of future city projects or become a form of communication of government proposals to the neighbors, beyond the scope of the discipline.

summary The ascension of social media platforms has transformed our understanding of urban environments, giving rise to nuanced variations in sentiment reaction embedded within human perception and opinion, and challenging existing multidimensional sentiment analysis approaches in urban studies. This study presents novel methodologies for identifying and elucidating sentiment inconsistency, constructing a dataset encompassing 140,750 Baidu and Tencent Street view images to measure perceptions, and 984,024 Weibo social media text posts to measure opinions. A reaction index is developed, integrating object detection and natural language processing techniques to classify sentiment in Beijing Second Ring for 2016 and 2022. Classified sentiment reaction is analysed and visualized using regression analysis, image segmentation, and word frequency based on land-use distribution to discern underlying factors. The perception affective reaction trend map reveals a shift toward more evenly distributed positive sentiment, while the opinion affective reaction trend map shows more extreme changes. Our mismatch map indicates significant disparities between the sentiments of human perception and opinion of urban areas over the years. Changes in sentiment reactions have significant relationships with elements such as dense buildings and pedestrian presence. Our inconsistent maps present perception and opinion sentiments before and after the pandemic and offer potential explanations and directions for environmental management, in formulating strategies for urban renewal.

summary This paper describes the development of an Intelligent Adaptive Control (IAC) framework that uses machine learning to integrate responsive passive conditioning at the envelope into a building’s comprehensive conventional environmental control system. Initial results show that by leveraging adaptive computational control to orchestrate the building’s mechanical and passive systems together, there exists a demonstrably greater potential to maximize energy efficiency than can be gained by focusing on either system individually, while the addition of more passive conditioning strategies significantly increase human comfort, health and wellness building-wide. Implicitly, this project suggests that, given the development and ever increasing adoption of building automation systems, a significant new site for computational design in architecture is expanding within the post-occupancy operation of a building, in contrast to architects’ traditional focus on the building’s initial design. Through the development of an experimental framework that includes physical material testing linked to computational simulation, this project begins to describe a set of tools and procedures by which architects might better conceptualize, visualize, and experiment with the design of adaptive building envelopes. This process allows designers to ultimately engage in the opportunities presented by active systems that govern the daily interactions between a building, its inhabitants, and their environment long after construction is completed. Adaptive material assemblies at the envelope are given special attention since it is here that a building’s performance and urban expression are most closely intertwined.

summary Traditionally, architects express their thoughts on the design of 3D architectural forms via perspective renderings and standardized 2D drawings. However, as architectural design is always multidimensional and intricate, it is difficult to make others understand the design intention, concrete form, and even spatial layout through simple language descriptions. Benefiting from the fast development of machine learning, especially natural language processing and convolutional neural networks, this paper proposes a Linguistics-based Architectural Form Generative Model (LAFGM) that could be trained to make 3D architectural form predictions based simply on language input. Several related works exist that focus on learning text-to-image generation, while others have taken a further step by generating simple shapes from the descriptions. However, the text parsing and output of these works still remain either at the 2D stage or confined to a single geometry. On the basis of these works, this paper used both Stanford Scene Graph Parser (Sebastian et al. 2015) and graph convolutional networks (Kipf and Welling 2016) to compile the analytic semantic structure for the input texts, then generated the 3D architectural form expressed by the language descriptions, which is also aided by several optimization algorithms. To a certain extent, the training results approached the 3D form intended in the textual description, not only indicating the tremendous potential of LAFGM from linguistic input to 3D architectural form, but also innovating design expression and communication regarding 3D spatial information.

summary This article analyses some of the proposals produced in the late 1970´s by the American contemporary artist Dan Graham, in which he uses technical means to investigate the audience´s perception and behavior. The questions raised highlight reciprocity phenomena and identity constructions – factors that affect our experience and behavior in contemporary cities daily life. All of these issues derive from Graham´s investigations of the main information and communication technologies (media) produced at that time, and which continue to offer reflections on current relationship between technical means and the subject – that is, his/her condition as audience, observer, spectator or user.

summary Over the last decade, paradigm shifts in the philosophy of space-time relations, the change from space-time to spatio-temporality, caused significant changes in the design field, and introduced new variations and discourses for parametric approaches in architecture. Among all the discourses, parametricism is likely the most spectacular one. The founder of parametricism, Patrik Schumacher (2009) describes it as “a new style,” which has “the superior capacity to articulate programmatic complexity;” and “aesthetically, it is the elegance of ordered complexity in the sense of seamless fluidity.” In its theoretical background, Schumacher (2011) affiliates this style with the philosophy of autopoiesis, the philosophy that stands between making and becoming. Additionally, parametricism concerns not only the physical geometry in making of form; but also discusses the relational and causal aspects in becoming of form. In other words, it brings the aesthetic qualities in making through the topological intelligence behind becoming. Regarding that, parametricism seems an effective way of managing /creating complex topologies in form-related issues. However, when it comes to practice, there are some challenging points of parametricism in large-scale design studies. Thus, this work underlines that the dominance of elegance for urban planning has the potential of limiting the flexible and dynamic topology of the urban context, and objectifying the whole complex urban form as an over-designed product. For an aesthetic inquiry into urban parametricism, this paper highlights the challenging issues behind the aesthetic premises of parametricism at the urban design scale. For that, Kartal Master Plan Design Proposal by Zaha Hadid Architects (2006) will be discussed as an exemplary work.

summary Montevideo has a new visitor. In the heritage building of the german architect Karl Trambauer, located in the Old City, a new presence was installed filling the vacuum left by its former collapsed dome, seeking to restore a message, adding a new vision and recovering the lost dialogue between the architecture, the city and its inhabitants. This paper summarizes and explains the experience of the workshop Adaptation 2015, held on September 2015 at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Exposing the theoretical framework, design strategies, morphogenetic development, digital manufacturing experimentations, conclusions and open questions from the experience made. We will go through this temporary intervention on Trambauer’s building, being a rare but symbiotic object, with parametric genes, digital and handcrafted manufacture, and also looking for the impact of theory and academic practices in the city.

summary People detection remains a challenging field within computer vision, the focus being placed mainly on the quantification of discreet amount of people. This paper reports on the progress related to the Urban Instant Project and deals specifically with a first attempt at automatically detecting and quantifying the continuous amount of people present in any given video record of the same format taken from a walking observer point of view. In order to do so, we use the optical flow approach to image reading. This yields a first quantification of information in the shape of people within the total field of vision.

summary Existing urban planning and design systems and workflows do not effectively support a fast iterative design process capable of generating and evaluating large-scale urban models. One of the key issues is the lack of flexibility in workflows to support iterative design generation and performance analyses, and easily integrate into design and planning processes. We present and demonstrate a parametric modelling system, Möbius, that can easily be linked to Geographic Information Systems for creating modular workflows, provides a novel approach for visual programming that integrates associative and imperative programming styles, uses a rich topological data structure that allows custom data attributes to be added to geometric entities at any topological level, and is fully web-based. The demonstration consists of five main stages that alternate between QGIS and Möbius, generating and analysing an urban model reflecting on site conditions and using a library of parametric urban typologies, and uses as a case study an urban design studio project in which the students sketched a set of rules that defined site coverage and building heights based on the proximity to various elements in the design.
