summary This paper describes development and test of a prototype Virtual Reality system aimed at user involvement in hospital design. User needs and functional requirements are captured by interviews and observations in three case studies of ongoing projects in Denmark. Based on the identified requirements, a prototype is developed based on a multitouch display for manipulating room layout in a floor plan view and a set of Oculus Rift glasses for experiencing the design in Virtual Reality. Together with users from the studied cases, test scenarios were performed to identify possible benefits, challenges and further requirements to the system.

summary A thin line lies between reality and fiction; what is mentally imagined and what is visualized. It all depends on how ideas and images are perceived or what neurological activity is triggered in the user’s brain. Architects and designers spare no effort or tools in presenting buildings, architecture or designs in all forms or ways that would augment users’ experience whether on the perceptual or the cognitive level and in both the digital or the physical environments. In a progressive tendency they, the designers, tend to rely more and more on digitizing their vision and mission, which subsequently give them, impressive and expressive superiority, that would influence the users conscious on the one hand and manipulate their subconscious on the other. Within that process designers work hard to break any mental firewall that would prevent their ideas from pervading the space of any mental environment the user, build or visualize. In that context, to what extent such ways of mental entertainments used by architects, legitimize deception in design? What distinguishes employing the rhythmic simulation of the narrative fictional inceptions (virtual reality) from deploying the adaptive stimulation of the experience modeling conceptions. The difference between planting an idea and constructing an idea. It is not the intention of the paper to prove the failure of the computer aided design neither to stand against the digital architectural design media and applications development. It is rather to present a different way of understanding of how architectural design whether virtual, digital, or real can stimulates and induces codes and messages that is correlated to the brainwave cognitive attributes and can generate a narrative brain environment where the brain can construct and simulate its own fictional design. Doing so, the paper will review certain experimental architectural events and activities which integrate sound and sight elements and effects within some electronic, technical and digital environments.

summary In this paper the evolution of architectural composition teaching will be presented and discussed. The main point of these deliberations is to consider how digital methods and technologies have influenced the teaching methods and the understanding of compositional rules/principles by students. Another important factor which will be analysed, is the difficulties faced by teachers in the evaluation of students' work. The paper is divided into four parts, each of which concerns different approaches to architectural composition teaching. In the first part the historical background of architectural composition teaching is presented. In the second part traditional teaching methods is described, the third concerns teaching of digital architectural composition, and the fourth - digital architectural composition in virtual space. At the end of each section, the advantages and disadvantages of the discussed methods are presented. These disadvantages were a stimulus for changes in the teaching process, which was enabled thanks to the development of digital technologies (software and hardware) during the last 20 years. summary The use of models is one of the oldest media for creating, communicating and representing ideas throughout the ages. An investigation into the nature and characteristics of two modelling techniques in architectural design, i.e. physical and digital modeling, was conducted in the educational and professional domains in two countries. The aim of this study was to establish: (a) the degree of tangibility in model making as opposed to conventional and computational design approach; and (b) the iconic limitation of both types of modelling in design. To this end a survey was carried out among practising architects and students of architecture to establish their preferences and practices with respect to physical and virtual modelling. Some face-to-face interviews were conducted and an online questionnaire was distributed to both the aspiring and established architects. Data gathered through the questionnaire survey, interviews and photographs of the modelling process was analysed to come to tangible conclusions. Hence, this paper presents an insight into the merits and demerits of both the physical and virtual modeling techniques as seen through the eyes of professional and training architects.

summary Through the lens of participatory mass housing the paper explores the conference theme of simplicity and complexity. A suitable home is a deep rooted desire in the heart of people, and everyone has their own vision of what is a suitable home. Yet the multi-faceted social needs of housing and how they are being designed and developed in mass housing buildings appear too complex and appear too costly that the process would involve direct user participations. The authors have developed a Computer Aided Participatory Housing Design System (CAPHDS) to allow end users (future occupants) become active stakeholders in the design process with the aid of computational design instruments. These tools allow end users to actively engage in the process. The paper describes how a mass housing design process can be broken down into a set of simple tasks that encourage the active engagement and joint development of end users and architects with the proposed design.

title Project anywhere: An interface for virtual architecture

summary Virtual and augmented realities open a new world of great potential for spatial research and experimentation by allowing new forms of unbuilt sensible architectural space. This article starts with a sketch of the current context in virtual reality and continues by outlining the development and structure of the research ‘project Anywhere’. The project is an easily deployable, wireless, multi-user, augmented reality app system that offers full body immersion through body, head and hands tracking. It can host multiple concurrent users, able to move freely in the virtual space, by moving in the real and also perform actions through a gesture interface to affect their shared environment. In conclusion, we describe the inherent properties of such a space, which we propose as a novel spatio-temporal medium for architecture that suggests an enriched notion of space for exploration and experimentation, through an example of a potential application.

summary This paper follows our evaluation and research into designing tangible physical media for the purposes of teaching building physics to undergraduate architecture students. These media interfaces make use of a virtual environment to promote an understanding of the cycles, which govern architectural and urban projects (for example solar studies, the flow of heat, air and water). This project aims to create an ecology of devices which can be used by students to self-direct themselves and harbour critical making in their research methods (with the explicit intent of dissolving the barrier between design and research). The basic premise of this research, is that in light of growing student numbers, more students lacking confidence in numeracy skills as well as the desire to have self-directed or group-directed learning, tangible media has a promising role to play. There are several reasons for this optimism. The first is that a better sense of intuition is gained from an interactive model over reading notes from a lecture or textbook. The second is that tangible media engages in other modes of learning, being valuable to students who have an aptitude for kinesthetic and spatial learning over text-dominant learning.

summary The effect of scale on different parameters of the 3D printing of concrete is explored through the design and fabrication of a 3D concrete printed pavilion. This study shows a significant gap exists between what can be generated through computer aided design (CAD) and subsequent computer aided manufacturing (generally based on CNC technology). In reality, the 3D concrete printing on the one hand poses manufacturing constraints (e.g. minimum curvature radii) due to material behaviour that is not included in current CAD/CAM software. On the other hand, the process also takes advantage of material behaviour and thus allows the creation of shapes and geometries that, too, can’t be modelled and predicted by CAD/CAM software. Particularly in the 3D printing of concrete, there is not a 1:1 relation between toolpath and printed product, as is the case with CNC milling. Material deposition is dependent on system pressure, robot speed, nozzle section, layer stacking, curvature and more – all of which are scale dependent. This paper will discuss the design and manufacturing decisions based on the effects of scale on the structural design, printed and layered geometry, robot kinematics, material behaviour, assembly joints and logistical problems. Finally, by analysing a case study pavilion, it will be explore how 3D concrete printing structures can be extended and multiplied across scales and functional domains ranging from structural to architectural elements, so that we can understand how to address questions of scale in their design.

summary This paper describes an on-going research that unites two distinct and seemingly unrelated interests. One is Arabic calligraphy and the other is parametric architecture. The effort is to integrate these interests and, in doing so, balance cultural issues with technological ones, traditional with contemporary and spiritual with material. Moreover, this paper is inspired by Arabic calligraphy and its influence on Zaha Hadid’s designs; it is invigorated by parametric systems and their capacity as a source of architectural forms. This paper will observe the rising importance of computation technologies to architecture, which has always been a form of negotiation between ‘function and fiction’ and ‘force and form’. The paper proposes a Parametric Calligraphic Machine that simultaneously produces, connects and separates calligraphic surfaces, calligraphic images and calligraphic reality. Therefore, the goal is to examine this hypothesis in order to produce a set of techniques, tools and methods that inform the three-dimensional design process of Arabic calligraphy’s contemporary possibilities by addressing a process description rather than a state description of creating calligraphic images and calligraphic surfaces. The theoretical approach highlights issues pertaining to calligraphy, spatiality, translation, generative systems, parametric design, visual structure, force and form.

summary We build on previous technological developments in CAAD by looking into parametric design exploration and the development of the concept of parametricism. We use the phenomenological backdrop to account for our physical experiences and encounters as well as our mental ones; both evident in the link between parametric design as a process and an outcome. In specific, we previously examined two particular metaphors. The first metaphor addressed aspects of virtual environments that resemble our physical world; In other words, computer model as physical model and digital world as material world. In this volume, we extend the exploration into aspects of virtual environments and their resemblance to physical environments by looking at ‘performance’ aspects: the way in which environments are sensed, measured, tracked and visualised. Moreover, we reflect on matters and materiality in both virtual and physical space philosophically, theoretically, practically and reflectively. The second metaphor looked into the modes and means of interaction between our bodies and such virtual environment. Here we extend the investigation to look at the ways in which measures of environmental performance influence human interaction in real environments. The exploration takes us further to look into the area of design fabrication of the built environment, and methods in which developed processes meet environmental performance requirements, and the innovative outcomes that lead to disruptive technologies getting introduced into design and we revisit parametric design under this focus area.

summary This paper discusses the development of an interactive and a responsive Tangible User-Interface (TUI) for parametric and Building Information Modeling (BIM) applications. The prototypes presented in this paper utilizes physical computing systems to establish a flexible and intuitive method to engage digital design processes.The prototypes are hybrid UIs that consist of a digital modeling tool and an artifact. The artifact consists of a control system (sensors, actuators, and microcontrollers) and physical objects (architectural elements). The link between both environments associates physical objects with their digital design information to assist users in the digital design process. The integration of physical computing systems will enable the objects to physically respond to analog input and provide real-time feedback to users. The research aims to foster tangible computing methods to extend the capabilities of digital design tools. The prototypes demonstrate a method that allows architects to simultaneously interact with complex architectural systems digitally and physically.

summary Complex forms and structures have always been highly valued in architecture, even much before the development of computers. Many architects and engineers have strived to develop structures that look very complex but at the same time are relatively simple to understand, calculate and build. A good example of this approach is the Beijing National Aquatics Centre design for the 2008 Olympic Games, also known as the Water Cube. This paper presents a proposal for a structural variance-producing engine using cellular automata (CA) techniques to produce complex structures based on Weaire-Phelan geometry. In other words, this research evaluates how generative and parametric design can be integrated with structural performance in order to enhance design flexibility and control in different stages of the design process. The method we propose was built in three groups of procedures: 1) we developed a method to generate several fits for the two Weaire-Phelan polyhedrons using CA computation techniques; 2) through the finite elements method, we codify the structural analysis outcomes to use them as inputs for the CA algorithm; 3) evaluation: we propose a framework to compare how the final outcomes deviate for the good solutions in terms of structural performance and rationalization of components. We are interested in knowing how the combination of the procedures could contribute to produce complex structures that are at the same time certain rational. The system developed allows the structural analysis of structured automatically generated by a generative system. However, some efficient solutions from the structural performance point of view do not necessarily represent a rational solution from the feasibility aspects.

summary This paper investigates the potential of behavioral construction strategies for architectural production through the design and robotic fabrication of three-dimensional woven structures inspired by the behavioral fabrication logic used by the weaverbird during the construction of its nest. Initial research development led to the design of an adaptive robotic fabrication framework composed of an online agent-based system, a custom weaving end-effector and a coordinated sensing strategy utilizing 3D scanning.The outcome of the behavioral weaving process could not be predetermined a priori in a digital model, but rather emerged out of the negotiation among design intentions, fabrication constraints, performance criteria, material behaviors and specific site conditions. The key components of the system and their role in the fabrication process are presented both theoretically and technically, while the project serves as a case study of a robotic production method envisioned as a soft system: a flexible and adaptable framework in which the moment of design unfolds simultaneously with fabrication, informed by a constant flow of sensory information.

summary This article analyses the possibilities of expansion of the museum's exhibition space for the urban environment and the new relationships through the development of digital maps and augmented reality geolocated layers. The case study is the Guide of Nomadic Monuments (Guia dos Monumentos Nômades) organized for the exhibition Memory of Amnesia (Memória da Amnésia) that discussed the movement and displacement of statues through the last decades in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. summary MeasureIt-ARCH is A GNU GPL licensed, dimension, annotation, and drawing tool for use in the open source software Blender. By providing free and open tools for the reading and editing of architectural drawings, MeasurIt-ARCH allows works of architecture to be shared, read, and modified by anyone. The digitization of architectural practice over the last 3 decades has brought with it a new set of inter-disciplinary discourses for the profession. An attempt to utilise 'Open-Source' methodologies, co-opted from the world of software development, in order to make high quality design more affordable, participatory and responsible has emerged. The most prominent of these discussions are embodied in Carlo Raitti and Mathew Claudel's manifesto 'Open-Source Architecture' (Ratti 2015) and affordable housing initiatives like the Wikihouse project (Parvin 2016). MeasurIt-ARCH aims to be the first step towards creating a completely Open-Source design pipeline, by augmenting Blender to a level where it can be used produce small scale architectural works without the need for any proprietary software, serving as an exploratory critique on the user experience and implementations of industry standard dimensioning tools that exist on the market today.

summary This paper advocates alternative methods to overcome the impossibility of realising ‘perfect’ digital designs. It discusses Hong Kong’s 2015 ‘ZCB Bamboo Pavilion’ as a methodological case study for the design and construction of architecture from unprocessed natu- ral bamboo. The paper critically evaluates protocols set up to deal with errors resulting from precise digital design systems merging with inconsistent natural resources and onsite craftsmanship. The paper starts with the geometric and tectonic description of the project, illus- trating a complex and restrictive construction context. Bamboo’s unique growth pattern, structural build-up and suitability as a bending- active material are discussed and Cantonese bamboo scaffolding craftsmanship is addressed as a starting point for the project. The pa- per covers protocols, construction drawings and assembly methods developed to allow for the incorporation and of large building toler- ances and dimensional variation of bamboo. The final as-built 3d scanned structure is compared with the original digital model. The pa- per concludes by discussing the necessity of computational architec- tural design to proactively operate within a field of real-world inde- terminacy, to focus on the development of protocols that deal with imperfections, and to redirect design from the virtual world towards the latent opportunities of the physical.

summary The timber industry is expanding, including construction wood product applications such as glue-laminated wood products (R. Sikkema et al., 2023). To boost further utilisation of engineered wood products in architecture, further development and optimisation of related tectonic systems is required. Integration of digital design technologies in this endeavour presents opportunities for a more performative and spatially diverse architecture production, even in construction contexts typified by limited means and/or resources. This paper reports on historic precedent case study research that informs an ongoing larger study focussing on novel algorithmic methods for the design and production of lightweight, large-span, catenary glulam roof structures. Given their structural operation in full tension, catenary-based roof structures substantially reduce material needs when compared with those relying on straight beams (Wong and Crolla, 2019). Yet, the manufacture of their non-standard geometries typically requires costly bespoke hardware setups, having resulted in recent projects trending away from the more spatially engaging geometric experiments of the second half of the 20th century. The study hypothesis that the evolutionary design optimisation of this tectonic system has the potential to re-open and expand its practically available design solution space. This paper covers the review of a range of built projects employing catenary glulam roof system, starting from seminal historic precedents like the Festival Hall for the Swiss National Exhibition EXPO 1964 (A. Lozeron, Swiss, 1964) and the Wilkhahn Pavilions (Frei Otto, Germany, 1987), to contemporary examples, including the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre (HCMA Architecture + Design, Canada, 2016). It analysis their structural concept, geometric and spatial complexity, fabrication and assembly protocols, applied construction detailing solutions, and more, with as aim to identify methods, tools, techniques, and construction details that can be taken forward in future research aimed at minimising construction complexity. Findings from this precedent study form the basis for the evolutionary-algorithmic design and construction method development that is part of the larger study. By expanding the tectonic system’s practically applicable architecture design solution space and facilitating architects’ access to a low-tech producible, spatially versatile, lightweight, eco-friendly, wooden roof structure typology, this study contributes to environmentally sustainable building.

summary The paper addresses the issue of spatial mismatch of jobs and the accessibility to job locations based on different age, income and industry group. Taking Atlanta as a case study, we developed a geospatial analysis tool enabling developers, the city planning bureau and the residents to identify potential sites of redevelopment with better economic development opportunities. It also aids to find potential location to live with respect to user’s choices for transit options, walkability, job location and proximity to chosen land use. We built our model on a block level in the city, imparting them a score, visualizing the data as a heat map. The metrics to compute the score included proximity to job, proximity to worker’s residence, transit availability, walkability and number of landmark elements near the site. We worked with Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) Data along with residence area characteristics (RAC) and work place area characteristic (WAC) data sets, where the total number of data-points was over 3 million. It was challenging for us to optimize computation such that the prototype performs statistical analysis and updates visualization in real time. The research further is prototyped as a web application leveraging Leaflet’s Open Street Maps API and D3 visualization plugin. The research showed that there is a high degree of spatial mismatch between home and job locations with very few jobs with driving distance within 5 -10 miles with limited transit options in Atlanta. Further, it showed that low-earning workers need to travel significantly larger distance for work compared to higher class.

summary Most progress in designing mycelium-based material to date has been made by using petri dish and 3d printed geometries. In this study, reshaping capabilities of mycelium-based materials using fabric formwork is being discussed. This ongoing study is the result of a series of experiments about mycelium-based material that aims to investigate its potentials as free- form geometry. In this paper, we aim to make a comparison between initial and end shapes by implementing digital and analogue tools based on mycelium-based fabric formwork experiment. The physical experiment setup consists of different initial geometry alternatives and the deformation will be observed and measured numerically by time-based recording on top and section views. With the help of digital tools, experiments will be documented as a process of formation. We aim to discuss the potential of the usage of mycelium as a binding agent in free form geometry since mycelium acts as natural self-assembling glue. By doing so, structural potentials of the material, which is strengthened by mycelium hyphae, were examined. This study aims to contribute to the design research studies and scientific knowledge together to integrate living systems into the material design as encouraging collaborative interdisciplinary research, thereby positioning designer as a decision-maker from the very beginning of material design process.
