title CorkVault Aarhus: exploring stereotomic design space of cork and 5-axis CNC waterjet cutting
source Living Systems and Micro-Utopias: Towards Continuous Designing, Proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2016) / Melbourne 30 March–2 April 2016, pp. 767-776
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2016.767
summary This paper presents the design, fabrication, and construc- tion of CorkVault Aarhus, which was designed using parametric and physics simulation software and realized from ECA cork sheets cut using a CNC waterjet cutter. We recount the lessons learned through the intensive two-week workshop that explored the limits of the mate- rials and tools through prototypes and culminated with the assembly of the final free-form vault structure. Various vaults and arch proto- types provided pedagogical and research value, building up knowledge essential to the final structure built, a human scale pavilion designed and built in three days and made of a thin shell of cork pan- els working only in compression. Three driving concepts were crucial to the experience: stereotomy as a supporting theory, expanded cork agglomerate (ECA) as the main material and water jet cutting as the principal means of fabrication. The complex vault shape called for precise 5-axis cuts supporting a new paradigm in building stereotomic components for architecture.

title Integrating Physical and Digital Prototypes Using Parametric Bim in the Pursuit of Kinetic Façade
source Parametricism Vs. Materialism: Evolution of Digital Technologies for Development [8th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings ISBN 978-0-9955691-0-2] London (United Kingdom) 7-8 November 2016, pp. 155-168
summary Architectural facades are designed to respond to environmental, social and functional considerations among others. Advancements in Digital Design Computation (DDC) emerged as an essential support for exploring and creating contemporary architectural facades. Current research into responsive kinetic facade suggests different methods of integrating kinetics into physical facade. However, research indicates that physical façades struggle to achieve the anticipated kinetic responses. In addition, the process is formal, prescribed, lacks flexibility and mostly assists the designer in the visualization of design. Consequently, the challenges in understanding the creative process that mediates between digital/physical kinetics are important to address in the early design stage. Digital and physical façade prototypes would allow designers to test the qualities of such system before constructing full size mock-ups and discover new modes of parametric design thinking in architecture.

title Humanising the Computational Design Process - Integrating Parametric Models with Qualitative Dimensions
source Parametricism Vs. Materialism: Evolution of Digital Technologies for Development [8th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings ISBN 978-0-9955691-0-2] London (United Kingdom) 7-8 November 2016, pp. 9-18
summary Parametric design is a computational-based approach used for understanding the logic and the language embedded in the design process algorithmically and mathematically. Currently, the main focus of computational models, such as shape grammar and space syntax, is primarily limited to formal and spatial requirements of the design problem. Yet, qualitative factors, such as social, cultural and contextual aspects, are also important dimensions in solving architectural design problems. In this paper, an overview of the advantages and implications of the current methods is presented. It also puts forward a ‘structured analytical system’ that combines the formal and geometric properties of the design, with descriptions that reflect the spatial, social and environmental patterns. This syntactic-discursive model is applied for encoding vernacular courtyard houses in the hot-arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa, and utilising the potentials of these cases in reflecting the lifestyle and the cultural values of the society, such as privacy, human-spatial behaviour, the social life inside the house, the hierarchy of spaces, the segregation and seclusion of family members from visitors and the orientation of spaces. The output of this analytical phase prepares the groundwork for the development of socio-spatial grammar for contemporary tall residential buildings that gives the designer the ability to reveal logical spatial topologies based on socio-environmental restrictions, and to produce alternatives that have an identity while also respecting the context, place and needs of users.

summary This paper reports the responsive environments and the Theory of Ludification towards the interaction design using the structure of games on feedback process. It presents an interaction classification that can be reactive, responsive and dialogical based on authors related to cybernetics studies. It exposes the need for rationality in environments as an intrinsic and necessary condition for achieving the interaction. It also uses dialogue and game Vilém Flusser’s concepts to support this argument. Thus, it broadens the contemporary architectural discussion that encompassing communication processes that do not recognize the physical boundaries of the buildings.

title Associative Parametric Urbanism - A computational approach to parameterization of conceptual design phase
source Parametricism Vs. Materialism: Evolution of Digital Technologies for Development [8th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings ISBN 978-0-9955691-0-2] London (United Kingdom) 7-8 November 2016, pp. 207-216
summary Urban planning projects usually comprise a complex set of objectives that needs to be addressed by developing a number of proposals. This requires a lot of repetitive steps resulting in fewer and slowly-developed design alternatives. To address the limitations of the existing system, this research introduces the merge of associative parametric design tools with the conceptual design phase of urban planning process to propose a Parameterized Conceptual Design Phase. The developed Associative Algorithm within the proposed phase represents a computational approach that translates a site’s settings into local attractors to define urban fabric, and provide the designer with variations for optimal solutions. The Informal Settlement of Ezbet El Matar, Alexandria, is selected as the case study of this approach.

title Performative Agency of Materials: Matter agency of vernacular African pattern systems
source Living Systems and Micro-Utopias: Towards Continuous Designing, Proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2016) / Melbourne 30 March–2 April 2016, pp. 641-650
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2016.641
summary This paper investigates an agency of materials through a design methodology that follows Martin Heidegger’s process of “Entbergen” or “unconcealing” as a non-instrumentalist understanding of tools and materials. This investigation takes place through the de- sign of a children’s theatre in South Africa where material innovation for architectural components is needed. The research studies vernacu- lar African patterns and their inherent behaviour when transferred to materials. The transference of pattern systems to architectural proto- types is discussed alongside the discussion of their technical and ar- chitectural performance criteria. Following Heidegger’s theory of “Entbergen” (“unconcealing”) the paper will demonstrate how making in this methodology becomes an “unconcealing”, which includes both digital and analogue means, linking the four causalities - causa mate- rialis, causa formalis, causa finalis, and causa efficiens – through the agency of material within an integrated process between all four caus- es. Making becomes a process in which form is generated through in- terventions within fields of forces and currents of materials, taking cause and agency into account, and standing in opposition to methods that are defined by a premeditated notion of an ideal outcome.

source SIGraDi 2016 [Proceedings of the 20th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Argentina, Buenos Aires 9 - 11 November 2016, pp.290-296
summary This paper analyzes the possibilities brought by new digital technologies, architectural design and production for a paradigm shift in the construction sector. The methodology proposes to use evolutionary economy theory, that puts innovation as a key agent for change paradigms, to see connections between existing firms in the current paradigm and the connections that could be established for a new production paradigm through digital fabrication. For this, the role of the university and its potential for innovation, will also be analyzed, both to develop product technology, and to contextualize the technology being imported into a regional context.

summary Architecture has always followed the times and their innovations and, currently, an architecture based on digital technologies has been emerging and has increasingly explored architectural facades. In this paper we use DrAFT, a computational framework for the generation and exploration of facade designs, to explore a set of different examples of building skins. DrAFT includes a classification of facades that helps in the identification of algorithms that best suits each design intent. After combining the algorithms provided by this framework, the designer can more easily explore the solution space of the intended design.

summary Megalithic civilizations held tremendous knowledge surrounding the deceivingly simple task of moving heavy objects. Much of this knowledge has been lost to us from the past. This paper mines, extracts, and experiments with this knowledge to test what applications and resonance it holds with contemporary digital practice. As an experiment, a sixteen-foot tall megalith is designed, computed, and constructed to walk horizontally and stand vertically with little effort. Testing this prototype raises many questions about the relationship between form and physics. In addition, it projects practical application of such reciprocity between architectural desires and the computation of an object’s center of mass. This research contributes to ongoing efforts around the integration of physics-based solvers into the design process. It goes beyond the assumption of statics as a solution in order to ask questions about what potentials mass can contribute to the assembly and erecting of architectures to come. It engages a megalithic way of thinking which requires an intimate relationship between designer and center of mass. In doing so, it questions conventional disciplinary notions of stasis and efficiency.

title The Four F's of Architecture - A conceptual framework for understanding architectural works
source Parametricism Vs. Materialism: Evolution of Digital Technologies for Development [8th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings ISBN 978-0-9955691-0-2] London (United Kingdom) 7-8 November 2016, pp. 439-450
summary This paper presents a conceptual framework for understanding architectural works. This framework provides an understanding of an architectural building through qualitatively discerning the complexity of issues involved in its design and enabling their systematic integration into a theoretical construct. The premise behind this framework is that in design a better understanding of ‘what’ to design leads to a more informed base to ‘how’ to design. Using a grounded theory method, the paper postulates an ontological framework that recasts the Vitruvian triad of utilitas, venustas, and firmitas into spatial, intellectual, and structural forms respectively, and more importantly expands the triad to include context and architectural thinking as formative ideas, as integral components in any architectural work, thus closing a gap that existed in many frameworks dealing with architecture. The paper concluded that this framework offers a level of robust understanding of architecture that can be used in structuring the generation of architectural form as well as the description and analysis of existing works of architecture. Its value exceeds theory framing and extends towards architectural pedagogy as a theoretical framework in teaching design studio.

title VR or not VR – an eeZee question?
source SIGraDi 2016 [Proceedings of the 20th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Argentina, Buenos Aires 9 - 11 November 2016, pp.831-837
summary Virtual Reality (VR) software has developed to the point where, for the architect who is averagely technically adept, it can be incorporated into the design process with reasonable effort and costs. For VR to be an effective design tool, it must add value to the design process and should give insights and opportunities not available by other methods. Previous research by the authors reported on the results of an international student workshop, which focused on both the workflow, and the spatial perception that users experienced. In this paper, we continue to explore the question: “Can low cost VR be an effective addition to the architects’ design toolbox, or does it still remain a “far-fetched, high-tech expensive folly?” We will be assessing both the practicality of integrating VR into the design workflow and the spatial perception of the designer when interacting with the model. We are experimenting with additional interface tools for the new low cost Head Mounted Displays.

title An Investigation on Growth Behaviour of Mycelium in a Fabric Formwork
source Parametricism Vs. Materialism: Evolution of Digital Technologies for Development [8th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings ISBN 978-0-9955691-0-2] London (United Kingdom) 7-8 November 2016, pp. 65-74
summary Most progress in designing mycelium-based material to date has been made by using petri dish and 3d printed geometries. In this study, reshaping capabilities of mycelium-based materials using fabric formwork is being discussed. This ongoing study is the result of a series of experiments about mycelium-based material that aims to investigate its potentials as free- form geometry. In this paper, we aim to make a comparison between initial and end shapes by implementing digital and analogue tools based on mycelium-based fabric formwork experiment. The physical experiment setup consists of different initial geometry alternatives and the deformation will be observed and measured numerically by time-based recording on top and section views. With the help of digital tools, experiments will be documented as a process of formation. We aim to discuss the potential of the usage of mycelium as a binding agent in free form geometry since mycelium acts as natural self-assembling glue. By doing so, structural potentials of the material, which is strengthened by mycelium hyphae, were examined. This study aims to contribute to the design research studies and scientific knowledge together to integrate living systems into the material design as encouraging collaborative interdisciplinary research, thereby positioning designer as a decision-maker from the very beginning of material design process.

summary The Egyptian government resorts to prototype housing for low-income citizens to meet the growing demand of the housing market. The problem with the prototype is that it does not meet specific needs. Consequently, users make modifications to the prototype without professional intervention because of the high cost. This paper discusses an automatic multi-stories space planning tool that helps low-income citizens to modify their prototype housing provided by the government. Social, spatial and functional design aspects were set in the original design prototype by an architect. The proposed tool simulates spaces spatial locations in the original design by simulating the analogy of mechanical springs through an interactive simulation of a parametric model. The authors developed the used algorithm in the generative design tool Grasshopper and the live physics engine Kangaroo, both working within the Rhino 3D environment. The algorithm has two versions, one-floor level version and two floors version targeting the wealthier users. Results indicate that this tool integrates with the exploratory nature of the design process even for non-professional users. The authors designed a tool that will help the users to study the effect of the desired modifications against the originally provided prototype, it also makes it easier for users to express their requirements to a professional designer, conserving time and financial cost.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2016.819
summary This paper aims to provide a critical understanding of the discipline of architectural education, exploring how digital technology forms part of two Australian architecture schools. Generally accepted as the unbroken and consistent existence or operation of something over a period of time, continuity represents stability without interrup- tion. In the context of architectural design education, continuity aligns almost symbiotically with the design process; a system that facilitates a continuous loop of input, output and feedback for the designer— from defining the brief, collecting information, synthesising and pre- senting a design proposal. Preliminary findings of a larger research study that investigates the role of technology in architecture educa- tion, suggest that cultural patterns of technology adoption and valua- tion exist, valorising particular tools and establishing a framework for design teaching and practice that might disrupt the continuity of stu- dents’ design process. Moreover, the study shows evidence of a dis- ruption of continuity in design school narratives, emphasising the need to rethink design pedagogy and the place of technology herein. Reflecting on these observations, this paper explores the question: when the tools of digital technology challenge the established design process paradigm of an architectural school, how do educators re- spond to such a disruption in continuity?

summary Montevideo has a new visitor. In the heritage building of the german architect Karl Trambauer, located in the Old City, a new presence was installed filling the vacuum left by its former collapsed dome, seeking to restore a message, adding a new vision and recovering the lost dialogue between the architecture, the city and its inhabitants. This paper summarizes and explains the experience of the workshop Adaptation 2015, held on September 2015 at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Exposing the theoretical framework, design strategies, morphogenetic development, digital manufacturing experimentations, conclusions and open questions from the experience made. We will go through this temporary intervention on Trambauer’s building, being a rare but symbiotic object, with parametric genes, digital and handcrafted manufacture, and also looking for the impact of theory and academic practices in the city.

title Computational Weaving Grammar of Traditional Woven Pattern
source Parametricism Vs. Materialism: Evolution of Digital Technologies for Development [8th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings ISBN 978-0-9955691-0-2] London (United Kingdom) 7-8 November 2016, pp. 75-84
summary Weaving technique is one of the indigenous craftsmanship practices that are common in most of ethnic groups in Indonesia. Generally, it uses thin strips of organic material such as bamboo or rattan to make plane of surface that further can be developed into daily utensils or as a traditional architectural building components such as partition wall and floor. The research of weaving grammar as a system and process had been introduced and explored using Shape Grammar theory and principles. Having the potential implementation and to preserve the traditional weaving method, the grammar can be explored as a method of exploration in architectural design by extending the computation method based on the visual embedding of its pattern languages. The aim of the study is to discover the geometrical configuration underlied traditional weaving grammar by reconfiguring and elaborating procedures and further develop generative method using computational approach. We focused on the exploration of single and dual patterns of biaxial types of West Java woven pattern by using shape grammar principles. The result shows computational method is constructed by several rules which are defined as generative procedure. The result advised that traditional woven pattern has similarity according to its ruled-based system of generative algorithm.
