summary The subject of this paper describes a proposal on processes and strategies that a community should inherit towards a collective effort for the improvement of public space, in order to evaluate, preserve or cancel actions towards this scope of their personal, and extended, scenery. This project, within the spectrum of what an era, underlined by (financial) crisis, represents, is an experiment on the active cooperation of the citizens for their own benefit. That affects, amongst others, the social and public management of space, by creating and activating a community’s feeling of “ownership and responsibility” within its neighborhood. It is expected to achieve an intense caring environment both for the public space, and the extended private scenery. Identifying the tools for actions as such, there comes the necessity for them to be able to make the interested parties feel comfortable with the main artifact and challenge them for collaboration. The digital era, the social media power, as well as the need of the individuals towards networking and belonging, shall perform the main attraction to the subject, leading to the creation of a digital tool linking the people actively to the changes they want to see. This paper debates on the development of an application that enables citizens to take part on the well-being of the(ir) public space.

summary Human capabilities in architecture-scaled fabrication have the potential of being a driving force in both design and construction processes. However, while intuitive and flexible, humans are still often seen as being relatively slow, weak, and lacking the exacting precision necessary for structurally stable large-scale outputs—thus, hands-on involvement in on-site fabrication is typically kept at a minimum. Moreover, with increasingly advanced computational tools and robots in architectural contexts, the perfection and speed of production cannot be rivaled. Yet, these methods are generally non-engaging and do not necessarily require a skilled labor workforce, bringing to question the role of the craftsman in the digital age. This paper was developed with the focus of leveraging human adaptability and tendencies in the design and fabrication process, while using computational tools as a means of support. The presented setup consists of (i) a networked scanning and application of human movements and human on-site positioning, (ii) a lightweight and fast-drying extruded composite material, (iii) a handheld “smart” tool, and (iv) a structurally optimized generative form via an iterative feedback system. By redistributing the roles and interactions of humans and machines, the hybridized method makes use of the inherently intuitive yet imprecise qualities of humans, while maximizing the precision and optimization capabilities afforded by computational tools—thus incorporating what is traditionally seen as “human error” into a dynamically engaging and evolving design and fabrication process. The interdisciplinary approach was realized through the collaboration of structural engineering, architecture, and computer science laboratories.

Therefore, in this paper, was developed digital models that represent five possible circulations within an art gallery. These models were converting a model with the possibility of interaction and visualization in the third person. The software used in this conversion was chosen because generate a models with easy processing for rendering in real-time and having a viewer freeware, which allowed the intended use.

summary Reviewing the current research trends in robotic fabrication around the world, the trajectory promises new opportunities for innovation in Architecture and the possible redefinition of the role of the Architect in the industry itself. New entrepreneurial, innovative start-ups are popping up everywhere challenging the traditional model of the architect. However, it also poses new questions and challenges in the education of the architect today. What are the appropriate pedagogical methods to instill enthusiasm for new technologies, materials, and craft? How do we avoid the pure application of pre-set tools, such as the use of the laser cutter has become, which in many schools around the world has caused problems rather than solving problems? How do we teach students to invent their tools especially in a society that doesn't have a strong background in the making? The primary focus of this paper is on how architectural CAAD/ CAM education through the use of robotic fabrication can enhance student's understanding, passion and knowledge of materiality, technology, and craftsmanship. The paper is based on the pedagogical set-up and method of an M. Arch I studio that was taught by the author in fall 2016 with the focus on robotic fabrication, materiality, traditional timber construction systems, tool design and digital and physical craftsmanship.

summary In the context of environmental consideration and im- provement of living standards, design of high performance buildings that are both comfortable and energy saving is important. Simulation tools (such as CFD) enables analysing and visualizing environmental factors (such as temperature and airflow) based on the design proper- ties and can be used to improve the building design for better perfor- mance. However, these tools have limitations in providing interactivi- ty with users for creating multiple CFD visualization results to be used for analysing design options. This research presents an integrated de- sign tool which consists of CFD and VR technologies. The proposed system visualizes CFD results in a VR environment together with ar- chitectural design. Additionally, it enables configuring CFD parame- ters within the VR environment and allows repeatedly executing simu- lation and visualizing updated results. The proposed system enables visualizing information in relationship with the actual architectural design, space configuration and thermal environment, and provides ef- ficient design feedbacks.

summary According to the dictionary ambient architecture should be kind of object or space that relies to its surrounding or spontaneously reacts on the presence of human. Ambient architecture can also be musically expressed [1] or painted [2]. We developed special architectural building units that offer space for incorporation of intelligence and media for human interaction and for ambience.We are introducing an object called PET(ch)air made of PET(b)rick [3], a hollow transparent bottle-brick. The first intention was to generate new building unit from recycled PET material. Now that we observe its qualities, we can see it is well prepared for ambient intelligence application, especially in combination with light. For the purpose of a brick we are transforming old recycled plastic into new bottle-bricks. Using the bottle-brick as building unit we build interior objects that are ready to turn spaces into ambient rooms, places that can be customized by their visitors or spontaneously react on them. Together with this, we opened a design studio, where students were asked to develop ambient interior pieces for a special event using the method of learning by doing.

It is about infusing, narrating, doping, context, information and masterful articulations. Concepts become spectrums; they live like the memory or traces of things that have been; they are not documents - they are animate. In this context interest of this paper is to see how can an image of book in the world of data be different than Kevin Lynch's systemic image of the city (Lynch 1960). Lynch has abstracted from the physical city. He is representing cities on the level of text, grammars and structures. What if one takes his exercise seriously and starts to play with text on the level on information, data, lists and indexes? What is an image of a book, its character, mood, how many faces does it have? This is a going to be a drama.

summary In this study, Augmented Reality (AR) system is proposed to be used for outdoor renovation and maintenance projects of build- ings. The research proposes an outdoor marker-less AR system that considers the mobility of users and their long relative distance to tar- get buildings where 3D virtual objects should be augmented on. The proposed system uses local feature-based image registration technolo- gy and Structure from Motion (SfM) which reconstructs 3DCG mod- els using photographs from multiple viewpoints. A case study has been performed for a research building renovation scenario at Osaka University. The case study verified the performance of image registra- tion and tracking, and confirmed the applicability of the method.

summary The notion of globalisation has become widely spread in various fields, and accordingly, it is increasingly more important to take account of indigenous culture characteristics in each field. An as- pect of achieving globalisation, globalization with local consideration, is to consider the difference of colour usage between distinct cultures. This study suggests an approach to investigate the colour difference between eastern and western cultures with the case analysis of build- ing fac?ade colours in Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland. We an- alysed cultural colour usage characteristics and derived tendencies for both Paris and Tokyo Disneyland building fac?ade colours. To do this, we use image based k-means clustering algorithm and CIELAB colour space distances to explore colour characteristics. Our analysis indi- cates an overall colour usage tendency that Paris uses more green and bluish colours and Tokyo uses more red and yellowish colours for building fac?ades, based on CIELAB colour space values. The major motivation of this paper was to reflect the atmosphere and the mood of the space that can be easily felt but not readily expressible into a cultural colour palette. Eventually, by finding the characteristics of perceived colours, we hope to create a colour recommendation system for different cultures based on cultural clues.

summary This study presents preliminary results of an experiment of production and use of tactile models to explain the form of an architectural space for visually impaired people. As part of a literature review, it explores the digital manufacturing technologies such as laser cutting and 3D printing to generate representations. The review uses a case study representing a house-museum and the experiments are based on a partnership with a school for a visually impaired people. The collaborative process has contributed to learning and explanation of multi-sensory characteristics of the constructed spaces and reinforced the need for a revision of educational processes for the architectural project regarding the habit of prioritizing essentially the aesthetic and visual aspects. The universal design concept gives grounds for each action.

summary With Information Technology such as smart phones we use public urban space differently. For example prior to cell phones people would meet in a public space by agreeing on a specific meeting location and time. Using cell phones people meet more spontaneous. Cell phones also allow people to be engaged in a very private phone conversation in the middle of a public space. In spite of information technology creating new uses for public space urban planners are still relying on old paradigms in designing and constructing it. A workshop was formulated around the question: How can we design urban spaces for a digital culture? The achieved outcome of the workshop was the design and realization of a public space that addresses this challenge. To do that students were asked to come up with new functions for public spaces, test materials, help seeking for funding and creating partnerships with the city, the industry and nonprofit organizations. During the duration of a one-semester timeframe the studio was facing a series of challenges dealing with the design, fabrication and realization of an urban space. This paper will describe the challenges of designing urban spaces for a digital culture, the structure of the workshop, the interventions made during the process and the final project, an urban landscape titled “Urban Blanket” that was build in Midtown Atlanta.

summary This paper presents a methodology to collect and visualize social media data about art, in order to map art locations in cities using geo-localized data, and comparing planning decisions with the actual use of spaces. As various social networks have penetrated into the daily life of people, these become one important and effective data source to understand how people perform 'arts' around the city [Shah, 2015]. The case study for this methodology is Singapore, a vibrant city where art and culture are being promoted in the light of an emerging creative economy. The Singapore government promotes art and creates 'art clusters', such as art districts, galleries, fairs and museums in the city. Additionally, artists, creative entrepreneurs, consumers, and critics seek and explore alternative spaces. Understanding where art and creativity are discussed, broadcasted and consumed in Singapore is a key point to have better insights into art space planning, and study its effects on the city.The paper will try to answer the following research question:Is it possible to discover, through social network data, spaces where art is produced, discussed, and broadcasted to an audience in Singapore? summary In previous efforts, the foundation of a general theory that searches for finding lightest manmade structures using the Delaunay diagram or its dual the Voronoi diagram was set (Ezzat, 2016). That foundation rests on using a simple and computationally cheap Centroid method. The simple Centroid method is expected to play a crucial role in the more sophisticated general theory. The Centroid method was simply about classifying a cloud of points that represents specific load case/s stresses on any object. That classification keeps changing using mathematical functions until optimal structures are found. The point cloud then is classified into different smaller points' groups; each of these groups was represented by a single positional point that is related to the points' group mean. Those representational points were used to generate the Delaunay or Voronoi diagrams, which are tested structurally to prove or disprove the optimality of the classification. There was not a single optimized classification out of that process but rather a family of them. The point cloud was the input to the centroid structural optimization, and the family of the optimized centroid method is the input to our proposed implementation of the general theory (see Figure 1). The centroid method produced promising optimized structures that performed from five to ten times better than the other tested variations. The centroid method was implemented using the two structural plugins of Millipede and Karmaba, which run under the environment of the Grasshopper plugin. The optimization itself is done using the grasshopper's component of Galapagos.

summary The Colors We Share is the winning proposal for a permanent public art installation that will be built in Los Angeles’s Little Tokyo (Figure 1). Selected through a rigorous open Request for Proposals (RFP) process organized by the city, the project honors the community’s rich and multivalent history and celebrates the voices of its next generation. In collaboration with the Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC), the installation will feature a digital archive and will incorporate imagery gathered through social media to connect with other Nihonmachi (Japanese-descendant) communities across the globe in real time (Densho, n.d.). The vision for the project is two-fold: 1) to construct a vertical gateway that connects with the adjacent neighborhood, and 2) to create a dynamic display that allows community members to see themselves in the structure and connect with other Nihonmachi through locally, nationally, and internationally collected images and colors (Figure 2). In reference to the conference theme, this digital interface draws upon Dana Cuff and Jennifer Wolch’s Urban Humanities framework and creates a physical landmark that parses through an abundance of information to reveal the scarce voices and stories of a minority population (Cuff and Wolch 2016).

title Reciprocal transformations between music and architecture as a real-time supporting mechanism in urban design

summary The more complex our cities become, the more difficult it is for designers to use traditional tools for understanding and analyzing the inner essence of an eco-system such as the contemporary urban environment. Even many of the recently crafted digital tools fail to address the necessity for a more holistic design approach which captures the virtual and the physical, the immaterial and the material. Handling of massive chunks of information and classification and assessment of diverse data are nowadays more crucial than ever before. We see a significant potential in combining the fields of composition in music and architecture through the use of information technology. Merging the two fields has the intense potential to release new, innovative tools for urban designers. This article describes an innovative tool developed at the Technical University of Crete, through which an urban designer can work on the music transcription of a specific urban environment applying music compositional rules and filters in order to identify discordant entities, highlight imbalanced parts, and make design corrections. Our cities can be tuned.

summary Collaboration within Building Information Modeling process is mainly based on file transfer while BIM data being exchanged in either vendor specific file formats or neutral format using Industry Foundation Classes (IFC). However, since the Web enables Cloud-based BIM services, it provides an opportunity to exchange data via Web transfer services. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to investigate what features of Cloud interoperability can assist a network-based BIM data transmission for a collaborative work flow in the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (AEC) industry. This study indicates that Cloud-BIM interoperability needs to deploy major components such as APIs, data transfer protocols, data formats, and standardization to redefine BIM data flow in the Cloud and to reshape the collaboration process.
