summary Aristotle in his treatise, On the Soul, defined memory as knowledge of the past, obtained through seeing, sensing, observing, listening and learning. Memory can be envisaged as the mental imprint of an image that can be recalled through the experience of existing objects and places. How is cultural heritage related to the experience and knowledge called memory? Why do memories appear to have a strong influence in unconscious spatial perception? How can visualisation techniques activate heritage-memory? Buildings, as tangible elements of the historic city, disclose the memories of the past into the present, and direct us to an experience of time through matter. Buildings serve as a link bridging the past with the present, and eventually, the future sites of memory. Their fabric is constantly altered with engraved layers of historical change, a sequence of past events which emerge from the remnants of their structure. The past, imprinted on the city’s artefacts, manifests its tangible form, and through a new reading of heritage, as ‘heritage-memory’, immaterial qualities of previous eras can perhaps be revealed. This paper, part of an ongoing research situated in between theory and practice, argues that the immaterial elements of cultural heritage emerging from historic urban spaces, can be critically explored in a new way through the use of digital technology, as a tool to revisualise the memory of a locus. Taking Chambers Street in the Old Town of Edinburgh as a site of focus, this presentation demonstrates several steps towards visualising the heritage-memory of the site. The paper poses the question of how the site might serve as a memorial itself, revealing to the observer the knowledge of past events engraved on its locus. Chambers Street serves as a paradigm of constructing a virtual narrative of heritage-memory, examining the site in parts and whole.

summary This paper describes some of the challenges of using a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) framework system with a variety of digital content. Situated in the 'efficiency' paradigm of digital design methods and Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) education, we allow participants to set their own schedules, meet demands that are appropriate for their abilities, and determine their own path. The content within this framework motivates students through life-like tasks and examples. This paper shares our experiences in CAAD education through a course curriculum developed by applying a variety of digital content. We have focused on resolving the problem of inefficient teaching of CAAD systems by developing a blended learning curriculum.

summary This paper aims to highlight the educational potential of the association between the architectural typology of temporary pavilions and digital fabrication process for architecture and urban planning courses. The pavilion theme is being increasingly exploited in various universities in the world, in order to work new paradigms of computational algorithmic architecture and new construction process, through digital fabrication labs. In this sense, these exercises can become a privileged and highly effective learning tool, due the impact of the integrated experience between creating (design), construction (to build) and experience (to appropriate the spaces).

summary The topic of this paper is about a technique to turn pictures into an intuitively modifiable 3D model. The research employs an analytical method using algorithms to conceptualise and digital- ise architectural spaces in order to highlight parametric shapes. Usual- ly, from one group of digital photos, photogrammetry techniques pro- duce a 3D-model mesh through a high-density 3D point cloud. This discordance between our intuitive partitioning of the mesh and its bare polygonal structure makes it interact poorly compared to the af- fordance of shape and component in our daily experience. Through a capture device, a visualisation of architecture in a digital data form is produced. They are processed by computer vision algorithms and ma- chine learning systems in order to be refined into a parametric model. Parametric elements can be described as a compound of formulas and parameters. By keeping the formula and changing the parameters, the- se elements can be easily modified in a range of likenesses. After be- ing detected during scans, these shapes can be adapted to fit the inten- tion of the designer during the design phase.

summary This paper describes the challenges and approaches to introduce computational thinking to a large and diverse group of architecture students during an international workshop with 300 students from different cultural backgrounds and educational levels, also integrating a diverse group of tutors whose computational expertise varied extremely. The approach suggested articulating a design task which enforced computational thinking but enabled different levels of engagement with the computer as a tool. Hypothetically this would allow all participants to engage with the computational thinking agenda regardless their computational affinity even whilst applying analogue methods. Besides the intercultural experience the workshop was successful in exposing a large group of students and tutors to the concepts of computational design whilst accommodating different learning preferences and engagement with the computer as a device.

summary Since the emergence of the concept of user-generated content websites – Web 2.0, Internet communications have developed as a powerful personal and social phenomenon. Many Internet applications have become partially or entirely related to the concept of social network; and cyberspace has become a space about ‘us’ not ‘where’ we are. This paper investigates the theoretical grounds of the effect of cyber experience on changing the individuals’ uses of the public spaces, and sustaining this change through maintaining the ties and reciprocal influence between actions in physical and cyber spaces. It aims at examining the impact of cyber territories on the perception, definition and effectiveness of personal space within different circumstances; and its role in changing the uses of spaces where people used to act habitually. The personal space, here, will be represented as the core of both: change and consistency – the space of bridging the reciprocal effect of cyber and physical counterparts, which is transformed through the experience of physical events mediated into the cyberspace. The paper is part of a study which looks at the case of Tahrir Square during the Egyptian political movement in 2011. We will compare the activists’ actions and practices in the Square during different events of non-routine use of the square and its surroundings. The case study will show the level of consistency in the features of the produced personal space within different waves of the revolutionary actions for all that different circumstances, motivations and results.

summary This paper details a pedagogical project which calls for an improved design performance of the existing built environment through the use of smart technology and data-driven design. The project is an investigation into ways in which to improve the performance of a ‘pre-selected university building’ through the use of a media facade that allows for interactive experiences. Existing problems of the selected building have been identified through observation and research using a rich picture and agile approach. An underutilised staircase was selected as the focus site for a series of computational design and interactive design studies. The brief of this mini-research project aims to encourage more people to use the stairs and create a memorable experience with a technological approach through the application of a site specific interactive media installation. The project is an interactive staircase which utilises LED strips and generative sound. The project features a series of light boxes which are connected to the existing staircase balustrade. Arduino, passive infra-red sensors, and other motion detection sensors were used to allow for light and generative sound interaction with users using visual scripting tools and a generative design platform. Sensing technology was used as a real-time data-gathering device during the site analysis phase as well as an input device for the designed prototype to allow the testing of the data-driven design. This paper details the study and resultant interactive prototypes. It also discusses the exploration of performance based design ideas into design workflows and the integration of sensing tools into the design process. It concludes by identifying possible implications on using the Internet of Things concepts to facilitate the design of interactive architecture.

summary This article analyses some of the proposals produced in the late 1970´s by the American contemporary artist Dan Graham, in which he uses technical means to investigate the audience´s perception and behavior. The questions raised highlight reciprocity phenomena and identity constructions – factors that affect our experience and behavior in contemporary cities daily life. All of these issues derive from Graham´s investigations of the main information and communication technologies (media) produced at that time, and which continue to offer reflections on current relationship between technical means and the subject – that is, his/her condition as audience, observer, spectator or user.

summary A thin line lies between reality and fiction; what is mentally imagined and what is visualized. It all depends on how ideas and images are perceived or what neurological activity is triggered in the user’s brain. Architects and designers spare no effort or tools in presenting buildings, architecture or designs in all forms or ways that would augment users’ experience whether on the perceptual or the cognitive level and in both the digital or the physical environments. In a progressive tendency they, the designers, tend to rely more and more on digitizing their vision and mission, which subsequently give them, impressive and expressive superiority, that would influence the users conscious on the one hand and manipulate their subconscious on the other. Within that process designers work hard to break any mental firewall that would prevent their ideas from pervading the space of any mental environment the user, build or visualize. In that context, to what extent such ways of mental entertainments used by architects, legitimize deception in design? What distinguishes employing the rhythmic simulation of the narrative fictional inceptions (virtual reality) from deploying the adaptive stimulation of the experience modeling conceptions. The difference between planting an idea and constructing an idea. It is not the intention of the paper to prove the failure of the computer aided design neither to stand against the digital architectural design media and applications development. It is rather to present a different way of understanding of how architectural design whether virtual, digital, or real can stimulates and induces codes and messages that is correlated to the brainwave cognitive attributes and can generate a narrative brain environment where the brain can construct and simulate its own fictional design. Doing so, the paper will review certain experimental architectural events and activities which integrate sound and sight elements and effects within some electronic, technical and digital environments.

summary In this paper the evolution of architectural composition teaching will be presented and discussed. The main point of these deliberations is to consider how digital methods and technologies have influenced the teaching methods and the understanding of compositional rules/principles by students. Another important factor which will be analysed, is the difficulties faced by teachers in the evaluation of students' work. The paper is divided into four parts, each of which concerns different approaches to architectural composition teaching. In the first part the historical background of architectural composition teaching is presented. In the second part traditional teaching methods is described, the third concerns teaching of digital architectural composition, and the fourth - digital architectural composition in virtual space. At the end of each section, the advantages and disadvantages of the discussed methods are presented. These disadvantages were a stimulus for changes in the teaching process, which was enabled thanks to the development of digital technologies (software and hardware) during the last 20 years. These strategies are based on experiential mappings constructed from different digital resources allowing constantly confront design with real life, in order to maintain, throughout the process, a sensitive and precise relationship between reality and experience. It concludes that these methodologies strengthen the autonomy of students, developing a valuable reconnection with the way they look and transform the world, validating the premise that the act of design is an innate human act and not necessarily an erudite one.

summary As one of the most important areas in the Palace Museum, Beijing, China, the Hall of Mental Cultivation had suffered from overcrowding of visitors before it was closed in 2016 for conservation. Preparing for the reopening in 2020, the Palace Museum decided to take the chance and initiate finer-grained tourism management in the Hall. This research intends to provide an audio-guided touring program by dynamically evaluating the Tourism Carrying Capacity (TCC) with the highlight spots in the Hall, to operate the touring program spatiotemporally. Framing an optimization problem for the touring program, an agent-based simulator, Thunderhead Pathfinder, originally developed for evacuation in the emergency, is utilized to verify the performance of the touring system. The simulation shows that the proposed touring program could precisely fit all the key requirements to improve the visitors' experience, to guarantee heritage safety, and to ensure more efficient management.

summary Every city has under utilized spaces that create a series of serious negative effects. Waiting for major interventions, those spaces can be reactivated and revitalized with soft temporary projects: micro interventions that light up the attention, give new meaning and add a new reading to abandoned spaces. We can call this kind of operations "plug-in design", inheriting the term from computer architecture: interventions which aim to involve the citizens and activate the environment, engage multiple catalyst processes and civil actions. Plug-in design interventions are by all meanings experimental, they seek for interaction with the users, locally and globally. Information Technology - with its parametric and site-specific capabilities and interactive features - can be instrumental to create such designs and generate a new consciousness of the existing environment. With this paper we will illustrate how two low-budget interventions have re-activated a forgotten public space. Parametric design with a specific script allowing site-specific design, materials and structure optimization and a series of interactive features, will be presented through Reciprocal 1.0 and Reciprocal 2.0 projects which have been built in 2016 in Italy by the nITro group.

summary The update in the design process associated with a constant search for efficient construction methods, budgets and actual schedules, passes through common terms the planning engineering and constructability, rationalization and integration. This article is based on literature review on the topic and interview with the experience of BIM core of a company in Brazil. BIM involves more than just 3D modeling and is also commonly defined into more dimensions, such as 4D (time), 5D (cost), 6D (the built - operation) and 7D (sustainability). The use of BIM can now be considered a reality that will promote changes to Construction.

summary This article proposes a reflection on the possibilities of using building blocks games as educational tool applied to the universe of Architecture and Urbanism design, from literature search and empirical data gathered in a workshop coordinated by the Research Group of Languages and Expressions in Architecture, Urbanism and Design – LEAUD (Brasil). The goal is to highlight the possibilities and limitations of using projetual world of building blocks as an academic material for Architecture and Urbanism, especially after the experience with LEGO Digital Designer software.
