summary The Colors We Share is the winning proposal for a permanent public art installation that will be built in Los Angeles’s Little Tokyo (Figure 1). Selected through a rigorous open Request for Proposals (RFP) process organized by the city, the project honors the community’s rich and multivalent history and celebrates the voices of its next generation. In collaboration with the Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC), the installation will feature a digital archive and will incorporate imagery gathered through social media to connect with other Nihonmachi (Japanese-descendant) communities across the globe in real time (Densho, n.d.). The vision for the project is two-fold: 1) to construct a vertical gateway that connects with the adjacent neighborhood, and 2) to create a dynamic display that allows community members to see themselves in the structure and connect with other Nihonmachi through locally, nationally, and internationally collected images and colors (Figure 2). In reference to the conference theme, this digital interface draws upon Dana Cuff and Jennifer Wolch’s Urban Humanities framework and creates a physical landmark that parses through an abundance of information to reveal the scarce voices and stories of a minority population (Cuff and Wolch 2016).

summary This paper includes a brief history about the beginning of the practical application of real genetics to architecture and design. Genetics introduces a privileged point-of-view for both biology and the digital realm, and these two are the main characters (the protagonists) in our posthuman society. With all of its positive and negative aspects, the study of genetics is becoming the cornerstone of our posthuman future precisely because it is at the intersection of both fields, nature and computation, and because it is a science that can command both of them from within—one practically and the other one theoretically. Meanwhile, through genetics and biodigital architecture and design, we are searching at the frontiers of knowledge for planetary benefit. In order to enlighten us about these issues, the hero image (Figure 1) has been created within the framework of scanning electron microscope (SEM) research on the genesic level, where masses of cells organize themselves into primigenic structures. Microscope study was carried out at the same time as the aforementioned genetic research in order to find structures and to learn typologies that could be of interest for architecture, here illustrated as an alternative landscape of the future. summary This paper aims to provide a critical understanding of the discipline of architectural education, exploring how digital technology forms part of two Australian architecture schools. Generally accepted as the unbroken and consistent existence or operation of something over a period of time, continuity represents stability without interrup- tion. In the context of architectural design education, continuity aligns almost symbiotically with the design process; a system that facilitates a continuous loop of input, output and feedback for the designer— from defining the brief, collecting information, synthesising and pre- senting a design proposal. Preliminary findings of a larger research study that investigates the role of technology in architecture educa- tion, suggest that cultural patterns of technology adoption and valua- tion exist, valorising particular tools and establishing a framework for design teaching and practice that might disrupt the continuity of stu- dents’ design process. Moreover, the study shows evidence of a dis- ruption of continuity in design school narratives, emphasising the need to rethink design pedagogy and the place of technology herein. Reflecting on these observations, this paper explores the question: when the tools of digital technology challenge the established design process paradigm of an architectural school, how do educators re- spond to such a disruption in continuity?

summary Daylight simulations are occasionally used as active tools in regards to local governing regulations, which are necessary for providing documentation. Simulation tools have been avoided in the past due to their barriers. Daylight simulation tools are used within documentation design stages as ‘passive tools’, however they do not have a direct impact on the architecture design decisions, as passive tools are used by engineers usually to derive material and glass speci- fications. Recent developments within an online community have pro- vided designers with access to daylight simulation tools within a de- sign platform accessible data can be modified and represented with local governing codes to provide designers with relevant information. The paper aimed to develop an active daylight simulation tool within a design platform. Data is filtered with the Green Star benchmarks to export visual information as well as a voxel matrix instead of 2D lu- minance maps. This paper outlines a workflow of the simulation tool used to evaluate daylight performance of a selected building as a case study in real time. The paper also details potential problems and justi- fied suggestions derived from the analysis for the building to reach the requirements within the Green Star Multi Unit Residential.

summary Finding an attractive or best-fit neighborhood for a new resident of any city is not only important from the perspective of the resident him or herself, but has larger implications for developers and city planners. The environment or mood of the right neighborhood is not simply created through traditional characteristics such as income, crime, or zoning regulations - more ephemeral traits related to user-perception also have significant weight. Using datasets and tools previously unassociated with real-estate decision-making and neighborhood planning, such as social media and machine learning, we create a non-deterministic and customized way of discovering and understanding neighborhoods. Our project creates a customizable ranking system for the 195 neighborhoods in New York City that helps users find the one that best matches their preferences. Our team has developed a composite weighted score with urban spatial data and social media data to rank all NYC neighborhoods based on a series of questions asked to the user. The project's contribution is to provide a scientific and calibrated understanding of the impact that socially oriented activities and preferences have towards the uses of space.

summary Design is “something that we do” that is related to our unique human condition as creative individuals, so as “making” is related to how we manifest and impress that uniqueness into our surrounding environment. As designers, the way we impress our ideas into the material world is tightly connected to a ‘continuous creative performance’ and with concepts often missing in digital design and fabrication techniques –yet present in analog processes - such as ambiguity, improvisation and imprecision. In this paper, a model of human-machine interaction is proposed, that seeks to transcend the ‘hylomorphic’ model imperative in today’s digital architectural design practice to a more performative and reciprocal form of computational making. By using body gestures and imbuing fabrication machines with behaviour, the research seeks to embrace the concept of ‘performance and error’ as promoters of creativity and cognition about the things we create, installing human as the bond of the interrelations between designing and making.

summary This paper details a pedagogical project which calls for an improved design performance of the existing built environment through the use of smart technology and data-driven design. The project is an investigation into ways in which to improve the performance of a ‘pre-selected university building’ through the use of a media facade that allows for interactive experiences. Existing problems of the selected building have been identified through observation and research using a rich picture and agile approach. An underutilised staircase was selected as the focus site for a series of computational design and interactive design studies. The brief of this mini-research project aims to encourage more people to use the stairs and create a memorable experience with a technological approach through the application of a site specific interactive media installation. The project is an interactive staircase which utilises LED strips and generative sound. The project features a series of light boxes which are connected to the existing staircase balustrade. Arduino, passive infra-red sensors, and other motion detection sensors were used to allow for light and generative sound interaction with users using visual scripting tools and a generative design platform. Sensing technology was used as a real-time data-gathering device during the site analysis phase as well as an input device for the designed prototype to allow the testing of the data-driven design. This paper details the study and resultant interactive prototypes. It also discusses the exploration of performance based design ideas into design workflows and the integration of sensing tools into the design process. It concludes by identifying possible implications on using the Internet of Things concepts to facilitate the design of interactive architecture.

summary The nature of the architectural design process can be described along the lines of the following representational devices: the plan and the model. Plans can be considered one of the oldest methods to represent spatial and aesthetic information in an abstract, 2D space. However, to be used in the design process of 3D architectural solutions, these representations are inherently limited by the loss of rich information that occurs when compressing the three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional representation. During the first Digital Turn (Carpo 2013), the sheer amount and availability of models increased dramatically, as it became viable to create vast amounts of model variations to explore project alternatives among a much larger range of different physical and creative dimensions. 3D models show how the design object appears in real life, and can include a wider array of object information that is more easily understandable by nonexperts, as exemplified in techniques such as building information modeling and parametric modeling. Therefore, the ground condition of this paper considers that the inherent nature of architectural design and sensibility lies in the negotiation of 3D space coupled with the organization of voids and spatial components resulting in spatial sequences based on programmatic relationships, resulting in an assemblage (DeLanda 2016). These conditions constitute objects representing a material culture (the built environment) embedded in a symbolic and aesthetic culture (DeLanda 2016) that is created by the designer and captures their sensibilities.

title Printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic Multi-Bias Additive Manufacturing

summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary The article presents a research on real-time shape exploration employing analogue and digital form-finding and concludes with a proposal for a teaching methodology that led to an intensive student workshop which took place at the Institute of Architecture and Media at Graz University of Technology. The aim was to experiment with analogue and digital tools in parallel, counter-informing the design process. The experiments involved physical form-finding following the tradition of Frei Otto at the Institute of Lightweight Structures in Stuttgart as well as computational form- finding employing mainly dynamic relaxation techniques of spring-particle systems. The combination of techniques and methodologies eventually led to a feedback loop across different media that explored both qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the projects at hand. By establishing feedback between digital media and physical prototypes, the creative process is immediately informed by the material characteristics and properties which in turn give rise to a real-time exploration of form. Simulations of physical forces for architectural form generation are increasingly gaining ground in architectural education as there is a broad selection of computational tools readily available that allow quick experiments to be conducted.

summary Architectural and Engineering Communities are interested in the detection of differences between different representations of the same building. These can be the differences between the design and the as-built-state of a building, or the detection of changes that occur over time and that are documented by consecutive 3D scans. Current approaches for the detection of differences between 3D scans and 3D building models are however laborious and work only on the level of a building element. We demonstrate a novel highly automated workflow to detect differences between representations of the same building. We discuss the underlying tools and methods and the ways to communicate deviations and differences in an appropriate manner and evaluate our approach with a rich set of real world datasets.

summary While nonlinear concepts are widely applied in analysis and generative design in architecture, they have not yet convincingly translated into the material realm of fabrication and construction. As the gap between digital design model, shop drawing, and fabricated result continues to diminish, we seek to learn from fabrication models and natural systems that do not separate code, geometry, pattern, material compliance, communication, and form, but rather operate within dynamic loops of feedback, reciprocity, and generative fabrication. Three distinct, but connected problems: 1) Robotic ink drawing; 2) Robotic wine pouring and object detection; and 3) Dynamically Adjusted Extrusion; were addressed to develop a toolkit including software, custom digital design tools, and hardware for robotic fabrication and user interaction in cyber-physical contexts. Our primary aim is to simplify and consolidate the multiple platforms necessary to construct feedback networks for robotic fabrication into a central and intuitive programming environment for both the advanced to novice user. Our experimentation in prototyping feedback networks for use with robotics in design practice suggests that the application of this knowledge often follows a remarkably consistent profile. By exploiting these redundancies, we developed a support toolkit of data structures and routines that provide simple integrated software for the user-friendly programming of commonly used roles and functionalities in dynamic robotic fabrication, thus promoting a methodology of feedback-oriented design processes.

summary This paper follows our evaluation and research into designing tangible physical media for the purposes of teaching building physics to undergraduate architecture students. These media interfaces make use of a virtual environment to promote an understanding of the cycles, which govern architectural and urban projects (for example solar studies, the flow of heat, air and water). This project aims to create an ecology of devices which can be used by students to self-direct themselves and harbour critical making in their research methods (with the explicit intent of dissolving the barrier between design and research). The basic premise of this research, is that in light of growing student numbers, more students lacking confidence in numeracy skills as well as the desire to have self-directed or group-directed learning, tangible media has a promising role to play. There are several reasons for this optimism. The first is that a better sense of intuition is gained from an interactive model over reading notes from a lecture or textbook. The second is that tangible media engages in other modes of learning, being valuable to students who have an aptitude for kinesthetic and spatial learning over text-dominant learning.

summary Finding automated methods to track the presence of hu- mans can help designers understand workplaces. Methods to under- stand the patterns of human movement in workplaces using beacons, badges and sensors are being developed. Whilst the results are promis- ing, they can be costly and may require the manual setup of expensive equipment. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is widely adopted due to its high degree of accuracy, however, is inapplicable in indoor environments due to the physical limitations of satellite attenuation. There is no comparably ubiquitous positioning system that can be used to make device-driven position tracking that is specifically adapted to indoor environments. With the increasing popularity of phones, watches and fitness tracking bands with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, we explore the potential of these wireless radios as a low-cost alternative to monitor human movement. As the costs of technology continue to decrease, the means to build a low-cost tracker through WiFi and Bluetooth enabled devices in an indoor environment become possible. Furthermore, is it possible to develop a low-cost tracking device using only commodity hardware that is able to accu- rately automate and record presence in space with sufficient veracity?

title Teaching Parametric Design in Architecture - A Case Study

summary The increasing technological advancements nowadays make the integration of digital tools and techniques in architecture pedagogy a must. A course in the department of architecture at Birzeit University in Palestine was proposed as a summer course in order to introduce students to the possibilities of using digital parametric tools and techniques in architecture design and manufacturing. In reflection of the experiment of the course, in which students were asked to design and construct a temporary pavilion, the paper will examine the potentials and challenges of using parametric digital tools in architecture design, and the way students imagine and conceive the performance of their design ideas virtually and practically. Furthermore, the project proposes that form is not constrained to the form-making process, but form must be a response to a material system and its properties, and thus material should be engaged in the design process. Initial design ideas are explored by building a parametric 3D digital model using a visual scripting platform. This virtual model allows for the evaluation of the performance of the design and the assembly method before realization and, moreover, experiments with design alternatives and forms. The final full-detailed digital model will be used in the fabrication phase to construct a one-to-one scale physical model in the real world, which gives students the chance to get sense and interact with the implemented environment and to experience their designs in real world.

summary The increasing population size of cities makes the urban fabric ever more complex and more disintegrated into smaller areas, called neighbourhoods. This project applies methods from geoscience and software engineering to the process of identification of those neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods, by nature, are defined by connec- tivity, centrality and similarity. Transport and geospatial datasets are used to detect the characteristics of places. An unsupervised learning algorithm is then applied to sort places according to their characteris- tics and detect areas with similar make up: the neighbourhood. The at- tributes can be static like land use or space syntax attributes as well as dynamic like transportation patterns over the course of a day. An un- supervised learning algorithm called Self Organizing Map is applied to project this high dimensional space constituting of places and their attributes to a two dimensional space where proximity is similarity and patterns can be detected – the neighbourhoods. To summarize, the proposed approach yields interesting insights into the structure of the urban fabric generated by human movement, interactions and the built environment. The approach represents a quantitative approach to ur- ban analysis. It reveals that the city is not a polychotomy of neigh- bourhoods but that neighbourhoods overlap and don’t have a sharp edge.

summary By enabling BIM technology, a building can be represented by a set of objects that carry detailed information about how they are constructed and also capture the relationship with other objects in the building model. Smart BIM objects can be classified as specific com- ponents encapsulating typical building rules and relations that can be predicted and defined by a few parameters and constraints. A frame- work is developed to show how a smart BIM object is developed. This paper presents the method of developing smart BIM object capable of better-informing design decision. To demonstrate the usefulness of smart BIM objects, a cloud BIM object library is developed and tested by academia and industry.

summary Modern modular constructions can consist of highly indi- vidualised elements that are produced at nearly the same efficiency as serial manufacturing. This paper focuses on the project “WoodWaves” an Info-Point for the conference World Congress of Timber Engineer- ing, which was designed with this new conception of modularity. The process utilises a robotically operated milling cutter to form block- board panels out of spruce, which make up the multifunctional infor- mation point. The entire object is produced with only sliding dovetail joints. Parametric design methods were developed to automatically adjust each joint to fit the individual conditions. New CAD/CAM in- terfaces, linking design directly with fabrication, enabled the serial production of 108 different shaped elements with a 6-axis robotic arm.
