summary Most progress in designing mycelium-based material to date has been made by using petri dish and 3d printed geometries. In this study, reshaping capabilities of mycelium-based materials using fabric formwork is being discussed. This ongoing study is the result of a series of experiments about mycelium-based material that aims to investigate its potentials as free- form geometry. In this paper, we aim to make a comparison between initial and end shapes by implementing digital and analogue tools based on mycelium-based fabric formwork experiment. The physical experiment setup consists of different initial geometry alternatives and the deformation will be observed and measured numerically by time-based recording on top and section views. With the help of digital tools, experiments will be documented as a process of formation. We aim to discuss the potential of the usage of mycelium as a binding agent in free form geometry since mycelium acts as natural self-assembling glue. By doing so, structural potentials of the material, which is strengthened by mycelium hyphae, were examined. This study aims to contribute to the design research studies and scientific knowledge together to integrate living systems into the material design as encouraging collaborative interdisciplinary research, thereby positioning designer as a decision-maker from the very beginning of material design process.

summary This paper includes a brief history about the beginning of the practical application of real genetics to architecture and design. Genetics introduces a privileged point-of-view for both biology and the digital realm, and these two are the main characters (the protagonists) in our posthuman society. With all of its positive and negative aspects, the study of genetics is becoming the cornerstone of our posthuman future precisely because it is at the intersection of both fields, nature and computation, and because it is a science that can command both of them from within—one practically and the other one theoretically. Meanwhile, through genetics and biodigital architecture and design, we are searching at the frontiers of knowledge for planetary benefit. In order to enlighten us about these issues, the hero image (Figure 1) has been created within the framework of scanning electron microscope (SEM) research on the genesic level, where masses of cells organize themselves into primigenic structures. Microscope study was carried out at the same time as the aforementioned genetic research in order to find structures and to learn typologies that could be of interest for architecture, here illustrated as an alternative landscape of the future. summary In moments when the artisanship tradition seems to disappear because of industrial production, we analyze cases where digital fabrication and visual programming were used in Latin American craft, encouraged by architects with skills in digital tools. The situations confront artisans with access to digital platforms and internet, use of learned skills, and the need to modify the technological level in their products and processes. Regional initiatives, which could change contemporary design history in the region with the establishing of a trans-disciplinary systematized synergy, show that traditional materials are used and unique components maintain their originality, from a region that attempts to enter into new global markets.

summary The Colors We Share is the winning proposal for a permanent public art installation that will be built in Los Angeles’s Little Tokyo (Figure 1). Selected through a rigorous open Request for Proposals (RFP) process organized by the city, the project honors the community’s rich and multivalent history and celebrates the voices of its next generation. In collaboration with the Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC), the installation will feature a digital archive and will incorporate imagery gathered through social media to connect with other Nihonmachi (Japanese-descendant) communities across the globe in real time (Densho, n.d.). The vision for the project is two-fold: 1) to construct a vertical gateway that connects with the adjacent neighborhood, and 2) to create a dynamic display that allows community members to see themselves in the structure and connect with other Nihonmachi through locally, nationally, and internationally collected images and colors (Figure 2). In reference to the conference theme, this digital interface draws upon Dana Cuff and Jennifer Wolch’s Urban Humanities framework and creates a physical landmark that parses through an abundance of information to reveal the scarce voices and stories of a minority population (Cuff and Wolch 2016).

summary Brick has been used in construction since ancient times and has been respected among other tectonic materials through out the history. Novel technologies recently have opened new horizons in using brick in architectural design. This paper investigates innovative implementation of bricks in kinetic architecture. Kinetic structures usually employ complex and high-cost mechanisms to come into force and their movements might be limited to some conditions. By the use of magnet in digital design, this research examines new methods for performing simple and affordable kinetic structures so as to create interactive relations between architecture and human being. Magnetic energy is applied in two ways to move a roof made of brick which is considered a heavy and masonry material. Consequently, it represents the hidden potentials of magnet as a renewable source of energy.

summary Scientific output has well-established methods for comparing and scoring the quality and quantity of the work. For artistic output this matter is not settled at all and a subject of much debate. We present a method which has been developed in Czech republic since 2011. This method is used to compare and score the artistic output of all schools of arts in the country (for example, music, performative arts, architecture, literature, sculpture, painting). The system presented in this paper is based on the Saaty-method (also known as Analytic Hierarchy Process). After almost eight years of development and use, the system has proven as a valuable asset to assess in an objective way output between many different forms of artistic works. In 2016 the system was incorporated in the Higher Education Act. In the paper we present a brief history of the development and the principles of AHP applied in the system. In particular, we will focus on the findings in architecture derived from the system. Finally, we will discuss possible implications for architectural education in general.

summary This paper presents the progress of a pilot classroom, which uses mobile devices to enhance instructor-student classroom interac- tions and students’ learning of the History of Art and Architecture. The main objective of this research was to find a way of improving classroom activities, for the coming year, by making the best possible use of technology to enable students to learn more successfully and improve their understanding of the lesson content. In this paper, class- room activities during 2014 and 2015 are analysed using the SAMR Model coupled with Bloom’s revised taxonomy and the EdTech Quin- tet Model. In addition, a plan for the redesign and improvement of ac- tivities in 2016 is proposed, the effectiveness of the SAMR model at improving in class activities is discussed and a perspective on how to develop the classroom using the “SAMR ladder” is included. The re- sults show that in 2015, 25% of the students in the class achieved an A grade, and less than 5% were graded F compared to 26% in 2012.

summary This paper examines the parametric model in algorithmic design processes, using the outcome of an educational digital design and fabrication course as a case study. In its long history, algorithmic design as a form-finding method, allowed designers to manage complex non-standard associative geometries, suggesting a shift from the digital representation of form, to its systematic representation into a parametric model through code. Rather than a style or a tool, the parametric model is best defined in mathematical terms; in practice it incorporates the organizational logic of the form and the topological associations of its parts, so that a change in its constitutive parameters will invoke a concerted update of the entire model, and, iteratively, formal and structural variations. In a series of design experiments that took place at the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete in the spring of 2015, we used parametric models represented into visual code, from the initial conceptual stage to fabrication. From the experience and outcome of this course, we deduced that, compared to other digital formation methods, parametric models allow the designer to constantly interact with the model through the code, producing discreet variations without losing control of the design intentions, by “searching” into a wide range (albeit finite) of virtual results. This suggested a shift in culturally embedded patterns of modernist design thinking.

summary Effectively communicating the history of a complex building site using only conventional presentation techniques can be limiting. It is a challenge to present temporal changes in the site simultaneously within a spatial framework. Whereas 2D drawings typically used in architectural historical scholarship are many times cleaned abstractions, 3D models might create an illusion of "recreated reality." Both representation types distance the reader from the primary sources rather than being a mechanism to bring the reader closer to the sources. This paper reports on an interactive simulation of a fin-de-siecle Ottoman insane asylum in Istanbul. Our response to these challenges incorporates to the simulation both the temporal aspect (spanning the life of the asylum and the daily life within) and primary documents by using temporally aware 3D models and keyed descriptive markers for building programming.

summary The increasing population size of cities makes the urban fabric ever more complex and more disintegrated into smaller areas, called neighbourhoods. This project applies methods from geoscience and software engineering to the process of identification of those neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods, by nature, are defined by connec- tivity, centrality and similarity. Transport and geospatial datasets are used to detect the characteristics of places. An unsupervised learning algorithm is then applied to sort places according to their characteris- tics and detect areas with similar make up: the neighbourhood. The at- tributes can be static like land use or space syntax attributes as well as dynamic like transportation patterns over the course of a day. An un- supervised learning algorithm called Self Organizing Map is applied to project this high dimensional space constituting of places and their attributes to a two dimensional space where proximity is similarity and patterns can be detected – the neighbourhoods. To summarize, the proposed approach yields interesting insights into the structure of the urban fabric generated by human movement, interactions and the built environment. The approach represents a quantitative approach to ur- ban analysis. It reveals that the city is not a polychotomy of neigh- bourhoods but that neighbourhoods overlap and don’t have a sharp edge.

summary This paper investigates the role of spatial parameters in relation to the economic dynamic embedded in the urban fabric. The key element explored in this study is the role of the urban configuration and accessibility on the success of different business sectors in Switzerland.The underlying hypothesis is that economic markets are constant forces of change influencing the development of cities and functions on all scales. Markets are institutions that reduce people's choices based on a myriad of factors to a single number, the price. Accessibility is a resource for each business that yields multiple values of benefits and transactions in terms of economic properties. This project explores the interaction of multiple measures of accessibility, calculated by Space Syntax analysis, with the success of different markets represented by employment by business sector. 828548 business locations and 44 spatial measures were used to derive associations between them. The results show that the measure of 'Choice' correlates highly for smaller radii and 'Integration' for larger radii with the total number of jobs. The result also shows each sector has a specific set of accessibility measures that allows them to thrive.

summary Urban planning projects usually comprise a complex set of objectives that needs to be addressed by developing a number of proposals. This requires a lot of repetitive steps resulting in fewer and slowly-developed design alternatives. To address the limitations of the existing system, this research introduces the merge of associative parametric design tools with the conceptual design phase of urban planning process to propose a Parameterized Conceptual Design Phase. The developed Associative Algorithm within the proposed phase represents a computational approach that translates a site’s settings into local attractors to define urban fabric, and provide the designer with variations for optimal solutions. The Informal Settlement of Ezbet El Matar, Alexandria, is selected as the case study of this approach.

summary This proceeding presents the process and outputs of a collaborative workshop which was held between Yaºar University in Turkey and Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. The aim of the workshop was to observe the educational potentials of a custom-made formwork device towards teaching CAD/CAM to architecture students. This flexible formwork, which we call FlexiMold, is a hybrid device that is used manually by following computerized numeric information. The students designed an architectural object which has a complex shape and used this formwork to fabricate it in actual scale. We present the workshop objectives, process and outcomes in this proceeding.

summary Fibre composites are synthetic in their composition, but structured similarly to biological materials, as fibre and matrix. While the fibre constituent in Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is mostly used under the form of fabrics, its standard fabrication processes do not rely on its inherent textile attributes. Embedding the fabric qualities in the fabrication of architectural FRP can potentially introduce concepts and properties of biological materials into engineered fibre composites; it can promote and enable the generation of an architectural complexity of a biological nature. The paper presents Fabric Materiality as a framework for a new design and fabrication process and demonstrates through a case study its integration in the fabrication of architectural FRP elements to achieve a complex structure with bio-inspired properties.

summary The complex nature of architecture requires often planning teams with specialists from multiple disciplines. Architectural education however, addresses this interdisciplinary modus operandi rarely. This paper presents the design and production process of a real world solar façade installation realized at the University of Kassel to illustrating the potentials of such an approach. Interdisciplinary teamwork allowed students not only to solve complex problems, but also to produce knowledge and to advance into design research. Student exploration resulted in a unique fabrication technique, combining tensile fabric and resin to facilitate the fabrication of multifunctional, monocoque shells; combining all necessary technical components in a single building element. This paper discusses the success of student collaboration and teaching strategies for key parts of the design process at different scales. Moreover, it highlights the importance of physical form-finding models and an analogue - digital workflow for collaborative communication. The Free Skin project offers both insight into applied use of interdisciplinary teamwork, and a proposal for incorporating such collaboration into architectural education.

summary Aristotle in his treatise, On the Soul, defined memory as knowledge of the past, obtained through seeing, sensing, observing, listening and learning. Memory can be envisaged as the mental imprint of an image that can be recalled through the experience of existing objects and places. How is cultural heritage related to the experience and knowledge called memory? Why do memories appear to have a strong influence in unconscious spatial perception? How can visualisation techniques activate heritage-memory? Buildings, as tangible elements of the historic city, disclose the memories of the past into the present, and direct us to an experience of time through matter. Buildings serve as a link bridging the past with the present, and eventually, the future sites of memory. Their fabric is constantly altered with engraved layers of historical change, a sequence of past events which emerge from the remnants of their structure. The past, imprinted on the city’s artefacts, manifests its tangible form, and through a new reading of heritage, as ‘heritage-memory’, immaterial qualities of previous eras can perhaps be revealed. This paper, part of an ongoing research situated in between theory and practice, argues that the immaterial elements of cultural heritage emerging from historic urban spaces, can be critically explored in a new way through the use of digital technology, as a tool to revisualise the memory of a locus. Taking Chambers Street in the Old Town of Edinburgh as a site of focus, this presentation demonstrates several steps towards visualising the heritage-memory of the site. The paper poses the question of how the site might serve as a memorial itself, revealing to the observer the knowledge of past events engraved on its locus. Chambers Street serves as a paradigm of constructing a virtual narrative of heritage-memory, examining the site in parts and whole.

summary Working with CNC routers and robots is widely used in architecture and fabrication. Our paper describes ways to use these tools more intuitively yet accurately and without a profound knowledge. We have developed a workshop format, in which even inexperienced participants are able to quickly start working with these tools by shaping the non-rigid material sand. Various production methods and tools are incorporated such as "manual", "gestural", "CNC" and "robotic" to create various 3D forms which are captured by methods like 3D scanning, vacuum forming or glueing.

summary The application of optimization processes in architectural design has gained significant attention among architects and recently has become a driving force towards more robust, reliable as well as flexible design investigations. Such application, require handling of multiple parameters, aiming at finding the range of possible solutions in morphological or topological problems of optimization, mostly during the design decision-making process and under the influence of functional, environmental, structural, or other design criteria. This ongoing research investigation puts forward the hypothesis that optimization processes might be equally applied during the construction decision-making process where architectural systems are examined in terms of their ability to be statically efficient and easily manufactured through the use of robotic machines. This is important to exist within a bidirectional platform of communication where the design decision-making will inform decision taken during pre-construction stage and vise versa. In order to test our hypothesis, two case studies are developed that implements genetic algorithms to examine the geometric and static behavior as well as the construction ability of proposed flexible three-dimensional modular formworks and overall systems for concrete casting, aiming to be robotically manufactured in actual scale.

summary The production of concrete structure components is often a backbreaking process due to the inconvenient and time-consuming process of producing the formwork. Depending on the geometry, this can be a very time-consuming activity. A trial will be made to solve these problems within the manufacturing process using adapted binder jetting technology. First of all, the research will deal with the behavior of concrete as well as the bond between the cement paste and the aggregate. Various additives and grain sizes will be determined to find an appropriate result. On the other hand, different spray and drop systems will be analyzed to compare the new method and the common binder jetting setup. After fabricating some geometrical shapes manually the study is going to be continued using computer-aided manufacturing.
