summary This paper includes a brief history about the beginning of the practical application of real genetics to architecture and design. Genetics introduces a privileged point-of-view for both biology and the digital realm, and these two are the main characters (the protagonists) in our posthuman society. With all of its positive and negative aspects, the study of genetics is becoming the cornerstone of our posthuman future precisely because it is at the intersection of both fields, nature and computation, and because it is a science that can command both of them from within—one practically and the other one theoretically. Meanwhile, through genetics and biodigital architecture and design, we are searching at the frontiers of knowledge for planetary benefit. In order to enlighten us about these issues, the hero image (Figure 1) has been created within the framework of scanning electron microscope (SEM) research on the genesic level, where masses of cells organize themselves into primigenic structures. Microscope study was carried out at the same time as the aforementioned genetic research in order to find structures and to learn typologies that could be of interest for architecture, here illustrated as an alternative landscape of the future. summary Scientific output has well-established methods for comparing and scoring the quality and quantity of the work. For artistic output this matter is not settled at all and a subject of much debate. We present a method which has been developed in Czech republic since 2011. This method is used to compare and score the artistic output of all schools of arts in the country (for example, music, performative arts, architecture, literature, sculpture, painting). The system presented in this paper is based on the Saaty-method (also known as Analytic Hierarchy Process). After almost eight years of development and use, the system has proven as a valuable asset to assess in an objective way output between many different forms of artistic works. In 2016 the system was incorporated in the Higher Education Act. In the paper we present a brief history of the development and the principles of AHP applied in the system. In particular, we will focus on the findings in architecture derived from the system. Finally, we will discuss possible implications for architectural education in general.

summary This paper details a pedagogical project which calls for an improved design performance of the existing built environment through the use of smart technology and data-driven design. The project is an investigation into ways in which to improve the performance of a ‘pre-selected university building’ through the use of a media facade that allows for interactive experiences. Existing problems of the selected building have been identified through observation and research using a rich picture and agile approach. An underutilised staircase was selected as the focus site for a series of computational design and interactive design studies. The brief of this mini-research project aims to encourage more people to use the stairs and create a memorable experience with a technological approach through the application of a site specific interactive media installation. The project is an interactive staircase which utilises LED strips and generative sound. The project features a series of light boxes which are connected to the existing staircase balustrade. Arduino, passive infra-red sensors, and other motion detection sensors were used to allow for light and generative sound interaction with users using visual scripting tools and a generative design platform. Sensing technology was used as a real-time data-gathering device during the site analysis phase as well as an input device for the designed prototype to allow the testing of the data-driven design. This paper details the study and resultant interactive prototypes. It also discusses the exploration of performance based design ideas into design workflows and the integration of sensing tools into the design process. It concludes by identifying possible implications on using the Internet of Things concepts to facilitate the design of interactive architecture.

summary The representational and visual aspects of architectural de- sign education cause certain pedagogical stresses in student’s capaci- ties to learn how to code, and this paper will serve as a critique of the current state of algorithmic pedagogy in architectural education. The paper will suggest that algorithmic curriculum should not frame code as ‘a design tool’, but as something to be designed in its own right; the writing of the code is the ‘design brief’ itself and not something addi- tional to an architectural design brief. The paper will argue for an ar- chitecture-less educational environment that focuses on computational competencies such as logic, loops and lists along with building a strong analytical basis for students’ understanding of programming and digital geometries.

summary CumInCAD is a cumulative index of publications related to 'Computer Aided Architectural Design' (CAAD). It includes bibliographic data of approximately 12K records, which were predominantly derived from CAAD-related conferences, such as ACADIA, ASCAAD, CAADRIA, eCAADe, SiGraDi and CAAD futures. A brief historical overview of almost two decades of collaboration between the University of Ljubljana and the above-mentioned CAAD-associations is provided. After years of successful operation the previous interface became gradually outdated, which called for new developments to assure continuous support to open access to scientific knowledge. In this contribution, we explain the existing status of the systems, its use, and the transition process to a cloud deployment.

summary Advances in 3D printing technology have reached architectural scales with 3D concrete printing, a digitally controlled fabrication process in which fibre-reinforced concrete is deposited layer-by-layer to fabricate building elements. In this paper we present a brief overview of key concrete 3D printing related research development efforts, followed by a report on a research project into the parametric online customisation and fabrication of small 3D concrete printed pavilions. The research project is set in, and addresses possibilities and constraints of, the developing local Chinese construction context.

summary The objective of this research project is to simulate and evaluate the effect of movement velocity and cognitive abilities on the visual perception of three groups of urban users: pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers.The simulation and analysis is based on the 3D Dynamic Visual Analysis (DVA) (Fisher-Gewirtzman, 2017). This visibility analysis model was developed in the Rhinoceros and Grasshopper software environments and is based on the conceptual model presented in Fisher-Gewirtzman (2016): a 3D Line of Sight (LOS) visibility analysis, taking into account the integrated effect of the 3D geometry of the environment and the variant elements of the view (such as the sky, trees and vegetation, buildings and building types, roads, water etc.). In this paper, the current advancement of the existing model considers the visual perception of human users employing three types of movement in the urban environment--pedestrians, cyclists and drivers--is explored.We expect this research project to exemplify the contribution of such a quantification and evaluation model to evaluating existing urban structures, and for supporting future human perception-based urban design processes.

summary This paper aims to provide a critical understanding of the discipline of architectural education, exploring how digital technology forms part of two Australian architecture schools. Generally accepted as the unbroken and consistent existence or operation of something over a period of time, continuity represents stability without interrup- tion. In the context of architectural design education, continuity aligns almost symbiotically with the design process; a system that facilitates a continuous loop of input, output and feedback for the designer— from defining the brief, collecting information, synthesising and pre- senting a design proposal. Preliminary findings of a larger research study that investigates the role of technology in architecture educa- tion, suggest that cultural patterns of technology adoption and valua- tion exist, valorising particular tools and establishing a framework for design teaching and practice that might disrupt the continuity of stu- dents’ design process. Moreover, the study shows evidence of a dis- ruption of continuity in design school narratives, emphasising the need to rethink design pedagogy and the place of technology herein. Reflecting on these observations, this paper explores the question: when the tools of digital technology challenge the established design process paradigm of an architectural school, how do educators re- spond to such a disruption in continuity?

summary This paper presents an integrated workflow for interactive design of shell structures, which couples structural and environmental analysis through a multi-agent systems (MAS) for design. The work lies at the intersection of architecture, engineering and computer science research, incorporating generative design with analytical techniques. A brief review on architectural shell structures and the structural logic of reciprocal frames is described. Through the morphological study of reciprocal frames locally we seek to inform the behavior of a MAS, which integrates form-finding techniques, with daylight factor analysis (DFA) and finite element analysis (FEA) on a global configuration. An experimental design is developed in order to explore the solution space of large span free form shells with varying topologies and boundary conditions, as well as identify the relationships between local design parameters of the reciprocal frames (i.e. number of elements, profile) and the analyses (i.e. stress distribution, solar radiation) for enabling the generation of different global design alternatives. The research improves upon design decision-making latency and certainty through harnessing geometric complexity and structural form finding for early stage design. Additionally, the research improves upon design outcomes by establishing a feedback loop between design generation, analysis and performance.

summary In moments when the artisanship tradition seems to disappear because of industrial production, we analyze cases where digital fabrication and visual programming were used in Latin American craft, encouraged by architects with skills in digital tools. The situations confront artisans with access to digital platforms and internet, use of learned skills, and the need to modify the technological level in their products and processes. Regional initiatives, which could change contemporary design history in the region with the establishing of a trans-disciplinary systematized synergy, show that traditional materials are used and unique components maintain their originality, from a region that attempts to enter into new global markets.

summary The research presented here reports on current advances in tying simulation and analysis of environmental building performance to design authoring software. A brief review of developments leading up to the convergence between design authoring and environmental performance testing helps to explain the current status-quo. Many of the applications available today are rooted in early research efforts that date back to the early days of Personal Computers (or even before). A small case study complements the historic review and offers some perspectives about tool selection in an educational design-studio setting.

summary The Colors We Share is the winning proposal for a permanent public art installation that will be built in Los Angeles’s Little Tokyo (Figure 1). Selected through a rigorous open Request for Proposals (RFP) process organized by the city, the project honors the community’s rich and multivalent history and celebrates the voices of its next generation. In collaboration with the Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC), the installation will feature a digital archive and will incorporate imagery gathered through social media to connect with other Nihonmachi (Japanese-descendant) communities across the globe in real time (Densho, n.d.). The vision for the project is two-fold: 1) to construct a vertical gateway that connects with the adjacent neighborhood, and 2) to create a dynamic display that allows community members to see themselves in the structure and connect with other Nihonmachi through locally, nationally, and internationally collected images and colors (Figure 2). In reference to the conference theme, this digital interface draws upon Dana Cuff and Jennifer Wolch’s Urban Humanities framework and creates a physical landmark that parses through an abundance of information to reveal the scarce voices and stories of a minority population (Cuff and Wolch 2016).

summary According to eCAADe's mission, the exchange and collaboration within the area of computer aided architectural design education and research, while respecting the pedagogical approaches in the different schools and countries, can be regarded as a core activity. The current session follows up on the first Contextualised Digital Heritage Workshop (CDHW) held on the occasion of eCAADe 2016 in Oulu (D. di Mascio et.al.) This event was thought to represent the first of a series of future contextualized digital heritage workshops and hence, the name Oulu interchangeable with the name of any other city or place. The second CDHW took place in the framework of CAADRIA 2017 in Suzhou (D. di Mascio & M.A. Schnabel) and focussed on sharing and dissemination of heritage information and personal experiences, such as narratives.The primary objective for the 2018 digital heritage session is to engage participants in an active discussion, not the longer format presentation of prepared positions. The round table itself is limited to short opening statements so as to ensure time is allowed for viewpoints to be exchanged and for the conference attendees to join in on the issues discussed. The panel will review past practices with the potential for guiding future direction.

summary Brick has been used in construction since ancient times and has been respected among other tectonic materials through out the history. Novel technologies recently have opened new horizons in using brick in architectural design. This paper investigates innovative implementation of bricks in kinetic architecture. Kinetic structures usually employ complex and high-cost mechanisms to come into force and their movements might be limited to some conditions. By the use of magnet in digital design, this research examines new methods for performing simple and affordable kinetic structures so as to create interactive relations between architecture and human being. Magnetic energy is applied in two ways to move a roof made of brick which is considered a heavy and masonry material. Consequently, it represents the hidden potentials of magnet as a renewable source of energy.

summary This paper presents the progress of a pilot classroom, which uses mobile devices to enhance instructor-student classroom interac- tions and students’ learning of the History of Art and Architecture. The main objective of this research was to find a way of improving classroom activities, for the coming year, by making the best possible use of technology to enable students to learn more successfully and improve their understanding of the lesson content. In this paper, class- room activities during 2014 and 2015 are analysed using the SAMR Model coupled with Bloom’s revised taxonomy and the EdTech Quin- tet Model. In addition, a plan for the redesign and improvement of ac- tivities in 2016 is proposed, the effectiveness of the SAMR model at improving in class activities is discussed and a perspective on how to develop the classroom using the “SAMR ladder” is included. The re- sults show that in 2015, 25% of the students in the class achieved an A grade, and less than 5% were graded F compared to 26% in 2012.

summary This paper examines the parametric model in algorithmic design processes, using the outcome of an educational digital design and fabrication course as a case study. In its long history, algorithmic design as a form-finding method, allowed designers to manage complex non-standard associative geometries, suggesting a shift from the digital representation of form, to its systematic representation into a parametric model through code. Rather than a style or a tool, the parametric model is best defined in mathematical terms; in practice it incorporates the organizational logic of the form and the topological associations of its parts, so that a change in its constitutive parameters will invoke a concerted update of the entire model, and, iteratively, formal and structural variations. In a series of design experiments that took place at the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete in the spring of 2015, we used parametric models represented into visual code, from the initial conceptual stage to fabrication. From the experience and outcome of this course, we deduced that, compared to other digital formation methods, parametric models allow the designer to constantly interact with the model through the code, producing discreet variations without losing control of the design intentions, by “searching” into a wide range (albeit finite) of virtual results. This suggested a shift in culturally embedded patterns of modernist design thinking.

summary Packaging design usually focus on the sale of the product, and leave other functions aside, such as the communication of information to the consumer. This article discusses how the changes in the visual language of the grid indicates that non-linear graphical features, such as data visualization, can improve the presentation of information in packages. A brief retrospective of the grid use in graphic design was made, wich were then related to examples of labels in the wine segment. The spatial dimension of data visualization proved to be relevant to information design in packaging.

summary The paper describes the application of a standardised teaching method of digital fabrication in architecture. The introduction formulates a pedagogical problem and addresses both methodological and praxiological aspects of the teaching process based on design research. Next, the process is illustrated with a description of three digital fabrication courses where the teaching method was used. The initial implementation took place in 2016 at Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology. The author outlines the translation of theoretical work frame into teaching method, presents the course outcomes and provides a critical analysis of results. In 2017, a revised teaching method has been used two times, again at Faculty of Architecture at WUT and at Monash Art Design and Architecture. Both courses are described in a way analogous to the initial exploration. In consequence, the results of the same course conducted in different teaching, conditions are compared. In conclusion, the developed method is evaluated in relation to teaching outcomes.
