summary This paper illustrates a fabrication methodology through which the inherent form of large non-linear timber components was exploited in the Wood Chip Barn project by the students of Design + Make at the Architectural Association’s Hooke Park campus. Twenty distinct Y-shaped forks are employed with minimal machining in the construction of a structural truss for the building. Through this workflow, low-value branched sections of trees are transformed into complex and valuable building components using non-standard technologies. Computational techniques, including parametric algorithms and robotic fabrication methods, were used for execution of the project. The paper addresses the various challenges encountered while processing irregular material, as well as limitations of the robotic tools. Custom algorithms, codes, and post-processors were developed and integrated with existing software packages to compensate for drawbacks of industrial and parametric platforms. The project demonstrates and proves a new methodology for working with complex, large geometries which still results in a low cost, time- and quality-efficient process.

summary A cost-driven design optimisation is introduced through two case studies: 1) a design prototype of a large scale housing com- munity for social mix of its tenants in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and 2) the one of a luxurious high-rise condominium with maintaining a de- cent level of its maintenance fee in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. For both cases, the computation of the optimisation was performed with re- gards to targeted financial concerns which are as following: 1) mar- keting value, construction cost, and government subsidy (incentives) for the case in Addis Ababa and 2) maintenance fee and construction cost for the case in Honolulu. Design factors are employed as a guide for computational outcomes in the optimisation of both architectural problems. The computational outcomes become the basis for project- ing three-dimensional forms as design alternatives. Its application process is delineated within the integrated environment of parametric modelling applications.

summary Responsive architecture is often considered as one that merely adapts to change. This reflects its limited and still incipient application in architecture. Due to the current resource crisis, systemic building management is essential. This article argues that there are no established processes for creating and managing responsive architecture. To establish a foundation in this area, it claims that it is necessary to deepen knowledge about systems, computation, mathematics, biology and robotics. Despite being a vast subject, it proposes a state of the art of the systems, investigating how to operate them. A method for generating responsive systems is tested and implemented in a practical case. Two methods of adaptation are proposed and tested: static and dynamic adaptation. These methods reinforce the point that responsive architecture can use not only active mechanisms, but also passive methods embedded in its form as information. The research concludes that information management is critical to define what is designated in software engineering as architecture of the system. Thus, it suggests that it is necessary to define meta-systems and to define their methods to support the generation, fabrication, construction and operation of responsive systems.

title Environmental footprint design tool: Exchanging geographical information system and computer-aided design data in real time

summary The pairing of computer-aided design and geographical information system data creates an opportunity to connect an architectural design process with a robust analysis of its environmental constraints. Yet, the geographical information system data may be too overwhelmingly complex to be fully used in computer-aided design without computer-assisted methods of filtering relevant information. This article reports on the implementation of an integrated environment for three-dimensional computer-aided design and environmental impact. The project focused on a two-way data exchange between geographical information system and computer-aided design in building design. While the two different technologies may rely on separate representational models, in combination they can provide a more complete view of the natural and built environment. The challenge in integration is that of bridging the differences in analytical methods and database formats. Our approach is rooted in part in constraint-based design methods, well established in computer-aided design (e.g. Sketchpad, Generative Components, and computer-aided three-dimensional interactive application). Within such computer-aided design systems, geometrical transformations may be intentionally constrained to help enforce a set of design determinants. Although this current implementation modestly relates to geometrical constraints, the use of probabilistic risk values is more central to its methodology.

summary While nonlinear concepts are widely applied in analysis and generative design in architecture, they have not yet convincingly translated into the material realm of fabrication and construction. As the gap between digital design model, shop drawing, and fabricated result continues to diminish, we seek to learn from fabrication models and natural systems that do not separate code, geometry, pattern, material compliance, communication, and form, but rather operate within dynamic loops of feedback, reciprocity, and generative fabrication. Three distinct, but connected problems: 1) Robotic ink drawing; 2) Robotic wine pouring and object detection; and 3) Dynamically Adjusted Extrusion; were addressed to develop a toolkit including software, custom digital design tools, and hardware for robotic fabrication and user interaction in cyber-physical contexts. Our primary aim is to simplify and consolidate the multiple platforms necessary to construct feedback networks for robotic fabrication into a central and intuitive programming environment for both the advanced to novice user. Our experimentation in prototyping feedback networks for use with robotics in design practice suggests that the application of this knowledge often follows a remarkably consistent profile. By exploiting these redundancies, we developed a support toolkit of data structures and routines that provide simple integrated software for the user-friendly programming of commonly used roles and functionalities in dynamic robotic fabrication, thus promoting a methodology of feedback-oriented design processes.

summary Unlike any other building material, timber has seen numerous innovations in design, manufacturing, and assembly processes in recent years. Currently available technology not only allows architects to freely shape building elements but also to define their micro- or macroscopic material make-up and therefore the material itself. At the same time, timber shells have become a focus of research in wood architecture by rethinking both construction typologies and material application. Their main advantage, however, also poses a challenge to its construction: As the shell is both the load-bearing structure as well as enclosure, its segmentation and the individual segment’s connections become increasingly important. Their complex and often differentiated geometries do not allow for standardized timber joints, and with decreasing material thickness, conventional connection techniques become less feasible. The research presented in this paper investigates textile strategies for the fabrication of ultra-lightweight timber shells in architecture. Specifically, a robotic sewing method is developed in conjunction with a computational design method for the development of a new construction system that was evaluated through a large-scale prototype building.

summary The concept of parametric design combines software and 3D modeling application that provides to designers, architects and engineers a new method for design development. This article aims to create a device for bicycle parking aided by a parametrization process using Grasshopper plug-in. Thus, we develop an algorithm in which its parameters can be modified accordingly to the esthetic-formal configuration required by the project. In order to evaluate the effect of a parametric value over the structure and resulting form, a rendering is created with each parameter change to visualize the resulting design interactively.

summary Fibre composites are synthetic in their composition, but structured similarly to biological materials, as fibre and matrix. While the fibre constituent in Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is mostly used under the form of fabrics, its standard fabrication processes do not rely on its inherent textile attributes. Embedding the fabric qualities in the fabrication of architectural FRP can potentially introduce concepts and properties of biological materials into engineered fibre composites; it can promote and enable the generation of an architectural complexity of a biological nature. The paper presents Fabric Materiality as a framework for a new design and fabrication process and demonstrates through a case study its integration in the fabrication of architectural FRP elements to achieve a complex structure with bio-inspired properties.

summary Bamboo is a high potential alternative solution for substi- tuting industrial material with its natural characteristics, economical and environmental aspects. However, one of the biggest challenges for natural materials to be used in computational designed is the control- lability due to its unevenness nature. The other gap is the lack of ma- terial parameters that might be bridged by analysing data acquired from conventional tests. This research studied the raw bamboo strip and its natural forming from bending, by using sampling points and curvature reconstruction. The parametric models of bamboo strips were then constructed to represent its material behaviours for form prediction, material selection, and simulation in parametric design. It also serves as an assistive method for material selection when crafting with bamboo bend.

summary The timber industry is expanding, including construction wood product applications such as glue-laminated wood products (R. Sikkema et al., 2023). To boost further utilisation of engineered wood products in architecture, further development and optimisation of related tectonic systems is required. Integration of digital design technologies in this endeavour presents opportunities for a more performative and spatially diverse architecture production, even in construction contexts typified by limited means and/or resources. This paper reports on historic precedent case study research that informs an ongoing larger study focussing on novel algorithmic methods for the design and production of lightweight, large-span, catenary glulam roof structures. Given their structural operation in full tension, catenary-based roof structures substantially reduce material needs when compared with those relying on straight beams (Wong and Crolla, 2019). Yet, the manufacture of their non-standard geometries typically requires costly bespoke hardware setups, having resulted in recent projects trending away from the more spatially engaging geometric experiments of the second half of the 20th century. The study hypothesis that the evolutionary design optimisation of this tectonic system has the potential to re-open and expand its practically available design solution space. This paper covers the review of a range of built projects employing catenary glulam roof system, starting from seminal historic precedents like the Festival Hall for the Swiss National Exhibition EXPO 1964 (A. Lozeron, Swiss, 1964) and the Wilkhahn Pavilions (Frei Otto, Germany, 1987), to contemporary examples, including the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre (HCMA Architecture + Design, Canada, 2016). It analysis their structural concept, geometric and spatial complexity, fabrication and assembly protocols, applied construction detailing solutions, and more, with as aim to identify methods, tools, techniques, and construction details that can be taken forward in future research aimed at minimising construction complexity. Findings from this precedent study form the basis for the evolutionary-algorithmic design and construction method development that is part of the larger study. By expanding the tectonic system’s practically applicable architecture design solution space and facilitating architects’ access to a low-tech producible, spatially versatile, lightweight, eco-friendly, wooden roof structure typology, this study contributes to environmentally sustainable building.

summary Most progress in designing mycelium-based material to date has been made by using petri dish and 3d printed geometries. In this study, reshaping capabilities of mycelium-based materials using fabric formwork is being discussed. This ongoing study is the result of a series of experiments about mycelium-based material that aims to investigate its potentials as free- form geometry. In this paper, we aim to make a comparison between initial and end shapes by implementing digital and analogue tools based on mycelium-based fabric formwork experiment. The physical experiment setup consists of different initial geometry alternatives and the deformation will be observed and measured numerically by time-based recording on top and section views. With the help of digital tools, experiments will be documented as a process of formation. We aim to discuss the potential of the usage of mycelium as a binding agent in free form geometry since mycelium acts as natural self-assembling glue. By doing so, structural potentials of the material, which is strengthened by mycelium hyphae, were examined. This study aims to contribute to the design research studies and scientific knowledge together to integrate living systems into the material design as encouraging collaborative interdisciplinary research, thereby positioning designer as a decision-maker from the very beginning of material design process.

summary Tree planting in design practice is considered simply as void fillers or view blockers. However, for a sustainable design, creat- ing places using trees need to be reconsidered. Going beyond tradi- tional tree plantings in urban environments, an application of compu- tational methods in landscape architecture for the management of the complex system is needed. While computational methods have been extensively applied to buildings, less has been applied to trees. The goal of this paper is to investigate how the presence of trees affects human movement and find out if computational methods can be used for recommending tree planting patterns. We analysed the tree plant- ing patterns in renowned theme parks as an initial research categoriz- ing tree planting patterns, using an agent-based analysis for simula- tion, and comparing the results of the average agent counts in theme park plans without trees and those with trees. We noticed there was a clear distinction between tree planting pattern types and the change in agent counts supporting the qualitative theory in landscape architec- ture. The result of this research can guide theme park designers as well as urban park designers when deciding which tree planting pat- terns to implement for the purpose of controlling pedestrian move- ments.

summary This paper aims to define the syntax of KBimCode Lan- guage as a domain-specific computer language to represent Korea Building Act sentences. KBimCode Language represents building permit requirements in Korea Building Act as explicit computable rules. KBimCode aims to accomplish the neutral and standardized way of rule-making in an easy-to-use syntax. This paper introduces the approach of language design and definition. The main concerns handled in the paper are: 1) features of building permit-related regula- tions in Korea Building Act are reflected in the strategy for the lexical and syntactic design of KBimCode Language; 2) specification of KBimCode based on the context-free EBNF notation is introduced; and evaluation of the language definition is performed. KBimCode is an ongoing project. Together with newly developed rule checking ap- plications, KBimCode will establish automated design quality assess- ment system in Korea.

summary In continuation to Generative Design Methods, this paper investigates the implementation of Biomorphic Design, supported by computational techniques in undergraduate, architectural studio education. After reviewing the main definitions of biomorphism, organicism and biomimicry synoptically, we will assess the application of a modified biomorphic method on a final year, undergraduate design studio, in order to evaluate its potential and its suitability within the framework of a research led design studio, leading to an RIBA accredited Part I degree. Our research findings based on analysis of design outputs, student performance as well as moderators and external examiners reports initiate a constructive debate about accomplishments and failures of a design methodology which still remains alien to many undergraduate curricula.

summary Megalithic civilizations held tremendous knowledge surrounding the deceivingly simple task of moving heavy objects. Much of this knowledge has been lost to us from the past. This paper mines, extracts, and experiments with this knowledge to test what applications and resonance it holds with contemporary digital practice. As an experiment, a sixteen-foot tall megalith is designed, computed, and constructed to walk horizontally and stand vertically with little effort. Testing this prototype raises many questions about the relationship between form and physics. In addition, it projects practical application of such reciprocity between architectural desires and the computation of an object’s center of mass. This research contributes to ongoing efforts around the integration of physics-based solvers into the design process. It goes beyond the assumption of statics as a solution in order to ask questions about what potentials mass can contribute to the assembly and erecting of architectures to come. It engages a megalithic way of thinking which requires an intimate relationship between designer and center of mass. In doing so, it questions conventional disciplinary notions of stasis and efficiency.

summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary This paper includes a brief history about the beginning of the practical application of real genetics to architecture and design. Genetics introduces a privileged point-of-view for both biology and the digital realm, and these two are the main characters (the protagonists) in our posthuman society. With all of its positive and negative aspects, the study of genetics is becoming the cornerstone of our posthuman future precisely because it is at the intersection of both fields, nature and computation, and because it is a science that can command both of them from within—one practically and the other one theoretically. Meanwhile, through genetics and biodigital architecture and design, we are searching at the frontiers of knowledge for planetary benefit. In order to enlighten us about these issues, the hero image (Figure 1) has been created within the framework of scanning electron microscope (SEM) research on the genesic level, where masses of cells organize themselves into primigenic structures. Microscope study was carried out at the same time as the aforementioned genetic research in order to find structures and to learn typologies that could be of interest for architecture, here illustrated as an alternative landscape of the future. summary Generative Design (GD) is a valuable asset for architecture because it provides opportunities for innovation and improvement in the design process. Despite its availability for Computer-Aided De- sign (CAD), there are few applications of GD within the Building In- formation Modelling (BIM) paradigm, and those that exist suffer from portability issues. A portable program is one that will not only work in the application it was originally written for, but also in others with equivalent results. This paper proposes a solution that explores porta- ble GD in the context of BIM. We also propose a set of guidelines for a programming methodology for GD, adapted to the BIM paradigm. In the end, we evaluate our solution using a practical example.

summary In Brazil, the application of wood in contemporary constructions is concentrated in the south and southeast. However, the entire country has area for cultivation and forest management, which is favorable for expansion in such applications. Wood is capable of absorbing CO2 and consumes little energy in production and manufacturing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the deficiencies of the building typologies became evident. This research aims to analyze digitally executed prefabricated houses such as Instant House (1), Digitally Fabricated House (2) by Sass, and WikiHouse (3) by Parvin; under the categories of Cardoso (2016): modulation, reversibility, and flexibility. The deductive method was used to investigate assumptions among the three case studies; and grounded in scientific literature to analyze and collect data. In general, the solutions studied enabled customizable systems allied to wood panels, modules, and fittings as generators of architectural form.
