summary The notion of globalisation has become widely spread in various fields, and accordingly, it is increasingly more important to take account of indigenous culture characteristics in each field. An as- pect of achieving globalisation, globalization with local consideration, is to consider the difference of colour usage between distinct cultures. This study suggests an approach to investigate the colour difference between eastern and western cultures with the case analysis of build- ing fac?ade colours in Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland. We an- alysed cultural colour usage characteristics and derived tendencies for both Paris and Tokyo Disneyland building fac?ade colours. To do this, we use image based k-means clustering algorithm and CIELAB colour space distances to explore colour characteristics. Our analysis indi- cates an overall colour usage tendency that Paris uses more green and bluish colours and Tokyo uses more red and yellowish colours for building fac?ades, based on CIELAB colour space values. The major motivation of this paper was to reflect the atmosphere and the mood of the space that can be easily felt but not readily expressible into a cultural colour palette. Eventually, by finding the characteristics of perceived colours, we hope to create a colour recommendation system for different cultures based on cultural clues.

summary Mesh segmentation has become an important and well-researched topic in computational geometry in recent years (Agathos et al. 2008). As a result, a number of new approaches have been developed that have led to innovations in a diverse set of problems in computer graphics (CG) (Sharmir 2008). Specifically, a range of effective methods for the division of a mesh have recently been proposed, including by K-means (Shlafman et al. 2002), graph cuts (Golovinskiy and Funkhouser 2008; Katz and Tal 2003), hierarchical clustering (Garland et al. 2001; Gelfand and Guibas 2004; Golovinskiy and Funkhouser 2008), primitive fitting (Athene et al. 2004), random walks (Lai et al.), core extraction (Katz et al.) tubular multi-scale analysis (Mortara et al. 2004), spectral clustering (Liu and Zhang 2004), and critical point analysis (Lin et al. 20070, all of which depend upon a weighted graph representation, typically the dual of a given mesh (Sharmir 2008). While these approaches have been proven effective within the narrowly defined domains of application for which they have been developed (Chen 2009), they have not been brought to bear on wider classes of problems in fields outside of CG, specifically on problems relevant to generative architectural design. Given the widespread use of meshes and the utility of segmentation in GAD, by surveying the relevant and recently matured approaches to mesh segmentation in CG that share a common representation of the mesh dual, this paper identifies and takes steps to address a heretofore unrealized transfer of technology that would resolve a missed opportunity for both subject areas. Meshes are often employed by architectural designers for purposes that are distinct from and present a unique set of requirements in relation to similar applications that have enjoyed more focused study in computer science. This paper presents a survey of similar applications, including thin-sheet fabrication (Mitani and Suzuki 2004), rendering optimization (Garland et al. 2001), 3D mesh compression (Taubin et al. 1998), morphin (Shapira et al. 2008) and mesh simplification (Kalvin and Taylor 1996), and distinguish the requirements of these applications from those presented by GAD, including non-refinement in advance of the constraining of mesh geometry to planar-quad faces, and the ability to address a diversity of mesh features that may or may not be preserved. Following this survey of existing approaches and unmet needs, the authors assert that if a generalized framework for working with graph representations of meshes is developed, allowing for the interactive adjustment of edge weights, then the recent developments in mesh segmentation may be better brought to bear on GAD problems. This paper presents work toward the development of just such a framework, implemented as a plug-in for the visual programming environment Grasshopper.

summary The paper surveys and discusses the current state of teaching BIM in departments of architecture in Egypt. It also connects it to the increasing professional market demand for technologically qualified architects. In specific, the paper explores the reasons behind the fact that the local BIM curriculum is lagging behind its international counterpart. It also explores the need to utilise BIM software capabilities. A further comparative survey is carried out between local case studies and international cases through identifying several stages of BIM implementation in both teaching and design. The advantages and disadvantages of the current method of teaching are explored in an effort to improve performance of BIM curriculum.

summary This paper investigates an agency of materials through a design methodology that follows Martin Heidegger’s process of “Entbergen” or “unconcealing” as a non-instrumentalist understanding of tools and materials. This investigation takes place through the de- sign of a children’s theatre in South Africa where material innovation for architectural components is needed. The research studies vernacu- lar African patterns and their inherent behaviour when transferred to materials. The transference of pattern systems to architectural proto- types is discussed alongside the discussion of their technical and ar- chitectural performance criteria. Following Heidegger’s theory of “Entbergen” (“unconcealing”) the paper will demonstrate how making in this methodology becomes an “unconcealing”, which includes both digital and analogue means, linking the four causalities - causa mate- rialis, causa formalis, causa finalis, and causa efficiens – through the agency of material within an integrated process between all four caus- es. Making becomes a process in which form is generated through in- terventions within fields of forces and currents of materials, taking cause and agency into account, and standing in opposition to methods that are defined by a premeditated notion of an ideal outcome.

summary This paper describes an experiment that took place as the last day of the elective course "De Humani Corporis Fabrica - Fabricating Emotions through Architecture". The goal of the Experiment was to evaluate the emotional experience of 1:1 scale architectural settings. The Experiment was part of the research for a PhD thesis which describes the relationship between architecture and the body since Vitruvius until the current theories of embodiment. The referred to thesis proposes the incorporation of the corporeal practices of performance art in the teaching of Architecture and combines these with the use of emotion measurement methodologies in order to evaluate the experience of architectural space and design objects during the design process. Psycho-physiological changes in the body's sensory perception during the performances were evaluated through the combined use of biometric technology (e-health platform), a Presence Questionnaire and a SAM chart. The course was attended by 4 students who participated as subjects in the Experiment. The Experiment had the technical support of the DFKI - Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz, which provided the machinery necessary to collect the biometric data during the Experiment and the knowledge needed to process them.

summary The 2016 US Environmental Protection Agency reported that 23.1 million tons of broken pieces of concrete waste are annually discarded from new construction sites (EPA -2) and in example states in the north american context only 6.6% of C&D concrete is recycled; the rest is thrown out in landfills as it is labeled “contaminated or too hard to process on a large scale.” (CT DOE 25) Relatively little investigation has occurred in how this material could reappear in the architectural project that might honor its intrinsic broken quality as a part of its materiality within a life-cycle of continual usage. This project speaks towards a problematic Habit of the Anthropocene in how we construct buildings placing intrinsic cultural value on new parts over the broken and old due to economic efficiencies.

summary True adaptability in architecture necessitates both dynamic hardware and software with the potential for continually renewable forms capable of all possible variations necessary for changing de- mands and conditions, without having to resort to one theoretically optimal solution. PA consists of both autonomous and subservient systems that maintain a constant homeostasis within its contained en- vironment. The information flow between the Genetic Algorithms (GA) and user input prompts this hybrid system to generate the conse- quent, ever-changing physical form, while continuously optimizing it for environmental stimuli. This paper proposes a smart strategy for a human interactive-cybernetic architecture in the context of K. Hotta’s Programmable Architecture (PA), aimed at enhancing GA’s capabili- ties in continuous self-modelling and facilitating human-computer in- terface.

summary Generative design based on symbolic grammars is oriented on individual artists. Team work is not supported since single scripts produced by various artists have to be linked and maintained manually with a lot of effort. The main motivation for a collaborative modeling framework was to reduce the script management required for large projects. We achieved even more by extending the design paradigm to a cloud environment where everyone is part of a huge virtual team. The main contribution of the presented work is a web-based modeling system with a specialized variant of a symbolic shape grammar.

summary This article presents the new results of a work originally prepared by undergraduate students of the Federal University of Pernambuco that developed a functional physical prototype of a responsive façade. At first, the system only changed itself accordingly to the modifications of the environmental parameters, such as temperature, humidity and luminosity. In this new research stage, a simplified version of the façade was developed to make the system responsive to the behaviour of those who are using the indoor spaces of buildings. The physical prototype was built with LEDs that represent the actuators responsible for modifying the position of the responsive façade parts, and the Kinect’s motion sensor was used to capture the human behaviour. The prototype here presented was developed with simple, easy to acquire materials, making it an element that can be easily reproduced and employed as an educational tool of automation applied to architecture.

summary This paper presents a design computation system support- ing scientific computing methods relevant to architectural and engi- neering design under the paradigm of visual programming. The objec- tive of this research work is to expand and advance the palette of methods employed in academic and professional design environments. The tools contain methods for linear algebra, non-linear solvers, net- work analysis and algorithms for classical operational research prob- lems such as cutting and packing, clustering and routing. A few dec- ades ago the idea that computing would become so pervasive in the realm of architecture and engineering as it is today was confronted with deep scepticism. The thesis of this paper is that while it may be equally implausible that such methods are relevant today it may be the next natural evolution in the direction of design computation. The cur- rent state of the presented software package is still in early alpha ver- sion and it is available online for evaluation.

summary Grouping spatial entities according to any kind of parameters has always been important both for practical and for theoretical purposes in architecture. For a long time, classification according to traditional reference systems was considered the only method to fulfil this purpose. However, in recent years, information technology has led to the hybridization and spread of design outputs, challenging the limits of applicability of these traditional reference systems and making it meaningless to refer to classification. This paper suggests the method of clustering spatial entities using user-defined reference systems. The method is demonstrated with a case study where 64 single rooms are clustered according to user-defined parameters with the use of the Self-Organizing Map. This method gives the power to the user to define and determine reference systems for the clustering of architectural projects according to their needs.

summary We propose a method for relatively small space that can optimize the size and shape of the neighborhood of an event occurrence spot on a grid space to minimize the classification error using classification by aggregating emerging patterns based on the concept of semi-supervised learning. We apply this method to data of waiting people in the Umeda Underground Mall and show that the proposed method can improve classification accuracy and understandability of classification rules.

summary The research presented in this paper describes the develop- ment of an Instagram-based multidimensional clustering algorithm. The algorithm analyses large datasets of Instagram images to establish new metrics that qualitatively assess proximity relations in a given geographical area —i.e. negotiates multiple acceptations of proximity. Influenced by Qualitative Spatial Reasoning, Lewis Mumford’s geo- graphic plexus and Kevin Lynch’s perceptual mapping, a graphic GUI-based application has been developed to produce real-time visu- alizations —maps, network graphs, and charts— by means of brows- ing, downloading and post-processing Instagram feeds. First, the ap- plication’s functioning will be described; second, several graphic visualizations will demonstrate the capabilities of the software; third, limitations and further development will be discussed.
