Apps are changing the habits and the ways that their inhabitants use the city. Through the development of different apps, a new way of represent and live the city has been created, taking the advantage of the data that is produced by their inhabitants.

summary The paper addresses the issue of spatial mismatch of jobs and the accessibility to job locations based on different age, income and industry group. Taking Atlanta as a case study, we developed a geospatial analysis tool enabling developers, the city planning bureau and the residents to identify potential sites of redevelopment with better economic development opportunities. It also aids to find potential location to live with respect to user’s choices for transit options, walkability, job location and proximity to chosen land use. We built our model on a block level in the city, imparting them a score, visualizing the data as a heat map. The metrics to compute the score included proximity to job, proximity to worker’s residence, transit availability, walkability and number of landmark elements near the site. We worked with Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) Data along with residence area characteristics (RAC) and work place area characteristic (WAC) data sets, where the total number of data-points was over 3 million. It was challenging for us to optimize computation such that the prototype performs statistical analysis and updates visualization in real time. The research further is prototyped as a web application leveraging Leaflet’s Open Street Maps API and D3 visualization plugin. The research showed that there is a high degree of spatial mismatch between home and job locations with very few jobs with driving distance within 5 -10 miles with limited transit options in Atlanta. Further, it showed that low-earning workers need to travel significantly larger distance for work compared to higher class.

title Architectural Space Planning Using Parametric Modeling - Egyptian National Housing Project

summary The Egyptian government resorts to prototype housing for low-income citizens to meet the growing demand of the housing market. The problem with the prototype is that it does not meet specific needs. Consequently, users make modifications to the prototype without professional intervention because of the high cost. This paper discusses an automatic multi-stories space planning tool that helps low-income citizens to modify their prototype housing provided by the government. Social, spatial and functional design aspects were set in the original design prototype by an architect. The proposed tool simulates spaces spatial locations in the original design by simulating the analogy of mechanical springs through an interactive simulation of a parametric model. The authors developed the used algorithm in the generative design tool Grasshopper and the live physics engine Kangaroo, both working within the Rhino 3D environment. The algorithm has two versions, one-floor level version and two floors version targeting the wealthier users. Results indicate that this tool integrates with the exploratory nature of the design process even for non-professional users. The authors designed a tool that will help the users to study the effect of the desired modifications against the originally provided prototype, it also makes it easier for users to express their requirements to a professional designer, conserving time and financial cost.

summary Throughout Latin America urban cable-cars are fast becoming a normal sight with urban transport systems, taking residents and tourists to and from previously isolated locations and providing a new form of accessibility that was not possible before. As its popularity grows, it is important to understand the role that improved spatial connectivity plays in transforming these communities and discuss how this can be best measured. This is because the spatial conditions of informal settlements are often forgotten about when planning large scale upgrading programs. Therefore, the aim of this article is to explore ways to interpret the role of spatial connectivity in the transformation process of informal settlements, through the case of Medellin's Urban Cable-car and the exploration of 'speed' as a measurable variable.

summary Within the contemporary condition, turbulence that confronts architecture is no longer unpredictable weather patterns or wild beasts, but the unintended forces of a constantly connected digital infrastructure that demands constant attention. If, as Mark Wigley puts it, “architecture is always constructed in and against a storm” it is time for architecture to reevaluate its ability to separate us from a new storm-one that situates technology, global connectivity, human, non-human and composite users, and algorithmic architecture itself as new weather systems. Toward this end, this paper explores architecture’s ability to mediate and produce algorithmic turbulence generated through image-based sensing of the built environment. Through a close reading of Le Corbusier’s Urbanisme, we argue that for much of the 20th and the early part of the 21st century, cities have been designed to produce diagrams of smooth and homogenous flows. However, distributed personal technologies produce virtual layers that unevenly map onto the city, resulting in turbulent forces that computational platforms aim to conceal behind a visual narrative of accuracy, cohesion, anticipation, and order. By focusing on SIFT algorithms and their ability to extract n-dimensional vectors from two-dimensional images, this research explores computational workflows that mobilize turbulence towards the production of indeterminate form. These forms demarcate a new kind of challenge for both architecture and the city, whereby a cultural appetite to deploy algorithms that produce a smooth and seamless image of the world comes hand in hand with the turbulent and disruptive autonomy of those very same algorithms. By revisiting Urbanisme, a new set of architectural objectives are established that contextualize SIFTS within an urban agenda.

In this context interest of this paper is to see how can an image of book in the world of data be different than Kevin Lynch's systemic image of the city (Lynch 1960). Lynch has abstracted from the physical city. He is representing cities on the level of text, grammars and structures. What if one takes his exercise seriously and starts to play with text on the level on information, data, lists and indexes? What is an image of a book, its character, mood, how many faces does it have? This is a going to be a drama.

title Reality is interface: Two motion capture case studies of human–machine collaboration in high-skill domains

summary This article explores hybrid digital/physical workflows in the building trades, a high-skill domain where human dexterity and craft can be augmented by the precision and repeatability of digital design and fabrication tools. In particular, the article highlights two projects where historic construction techniques were extended through live motion capture of human gesture, information-rich visualization projected in the space of fabrication and custom robotic tooling to generate free-form running moulds. The first case study explores decorative plastering techniques and an augmented workflow where designers and craftspeople can quickly explore patterns through freehand sketch, test ideas with shaded previews and seamlessly produce physical parts using robotic collaborators. The second case study reimagines a roman vaulting technique that used terracotta bottles as part of an interlocking masonry system. Motion capture is used to place building elements precisely in material arrays with real-time visual feedback guiding the hand-held placement of each bottle. These case studies serve to underscore the emerging importance of reality capture in the design and construction of the built environment. Increasingly, the algorithmic power of computational tools and the nuances of human skill can be combined in hybrid design and fabrication workflows.

summary Houses are essentially one-of-a-kind products that should reflect individualized differences of inhabitants who live in them. Homebuyers and homebuilders alike are thus captivated by the difficulties of housing customization. Achieving customer satisfaction depends on the flexibility of customized solutions, though the challenge of flexibility lies in the complexity of design validation. Constraints may be seen as design limitations, but they could provide for the efficiency of design validation. This paper addresses the complexities in the adoption of mass customization in the housing industry, and presents a dimensional customization system which would effectively use building information modeling (BIM) software, parametric design, and automatic verification of dimensional constraints to merge customization and validation.

summary In this paper, we describe an interdisciplinary project and live-exhibit that investigated whether untrained humans and robots could work together collaboratively towards the common goal of building a large-scale structure composed out of robotically fabricated modules using a filament winding process. We describe the fabrication system and exhibition setup, including a custom end effector and tension control mechanism, as well as a collaborative fabrication process in which instructions delivered via wearable devices enable the trade-off of production and assembly tasks between human and robot. We describe the necessary robotic developments that facilitated a live fabrication process, including a generic robot inverse kinematic solver engine for non-spherical wrist robots, and wireless network communication connecting hardware and software. In addition, we discuss computational strategies for the fiber syntax generation and robotic motion planning which mitigated constraints such as reachability, axis limitations, and collisions, and ensured predictable and therefore safe motion in a live exhibition setting. We discuss the larger implications of this project as a case study for handling deviations due to non-standardized materials or human error, as well as a means to reconsider the fundamental separation of human and robotic tasks in a production workflow. Most significantly, the project exemplifies a hybrid domain of human and robot collaboration in which coordination and communication between robots, people, and devices can enhance the integration of robotic processes and computational control into the characteristic processes of construction.

The aim is to study the impact of using physical models for second year architecture students in design studios learning. summary When thinking about the future vision of a city, having in mind recent development in digital technologies and digital design tools we are inclined to expect new building structures which incorporate this technology to better help us manage the complexity of life, and to simplify our daily lives and tasks. The idea behind this research paper lies in design of such structures, which could be put inside an urban context and engage in creating a built environment that can add more to the quality of life. For us Interactive architecture is architecture that is responsive, flexible, changing, always moving and adapting to the needs of today. The world is becoming more dynamic, society is constantly changing and the new needs it develops need to be accommodated. As a result architecture has to follow. Spaces have to become more adaptive, responsive and nature concerned, while having the ability for metamorphosis, flexibility and interactivity. Taken as a starting point of this idea is a specific module from graduation project in 2014 "The Unexpected city", where it was possible to test out first ideas about interactive and flexible objects in an urban environment.

summary Here we discuss the technological and theoretical issues that conform the restructuring proposal of the Computer Laboratory of Escola de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da UFMG, reconfiguring it in what we call “Meta-Lab”: a space composed of programmable modules that make up the so called Sistema Hidra(!), a system structured in three levels (sensory, processor and actuator level) which receives environmental information via sensors, processes these information and changes the environment using actuators. We will address in more detail the processing level, a fundamental layer for enabling the implementation of “interactive permanency” through continuous reprogramming of interactions in Meta-Lab.

summary The paper surveys and discusses the current state of teaching BIM in departments of architecture in Egypt. It also connects it to the increasing professional market demand for technologically qualified architects. In specific, the paper explores the reasons behind the fact that the local BIM curriculum is lagging behind its international counterpart. It also explores the need to utilise BIM software capabilities. A further comparative survey is carried out between local case studies and international cases through identifying several stages of BIM implementation in both teaching and design. The advantages and disadvantages of the current method of teaching are explored in an effort to improve performance of BIM curriculum.

summary Collaboration within Building Information Modeling process is mainly based on file transfer while BIM data being exchanged in either vendor specific file formats or neutral format using Industry Foundation Classes (IFC). However, since the Web enables Cloud-based BIM services, it provides an opportunity to exchange data via Web transfer services. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to investigate what features of Cloud interoperability can assist a network-based BIM data transmission for a collaborative work flow in the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (AEC) industry. This study indicates that Cloud-BIM interoperability needs to deploy major components such as APIs, data transfer protocols, data formats, and standardization to redefine BIM data flow in the Cloud and to reshape the collaboration process.

summary The effect of scale on different parameters of the 3D printing of concrete is explored through the design and fabrication of a 3D concrete printed pavilion. This study shows a significant gap exists between what can be generated through computer aided design (CAD) and subsequent computer aided manufacturing (generally based on CNC technology). In reality, the 3D concrete printing on the one hand poses manufacturing constraints (e.g. minimum curvature radii) due to material behaviour that is not included in current CAD/CAM software. On the other hand, the process also takes advantage of material behaviour and thus allows the creation of shapes and geometries that, too, can’t be modelled and predicted by CAD/CAM software. Particularly in the 3D printing of concrete, there is not a 1:1 relation between toolpath and printed product, as is the case with CNC milling. Material deposition is dependent on system pressure, robot speed, nozzle section, layer stacking, curvature and more – all of which are scale dependent. This paper will discuss the design and manufacturing decisions based on the effects of scale on the structural design, printed and layered geometry, robot kinematics, material behaviour, assembly joints and logistical problems. Finally, by analysing a case study pavilion, it will be explore how 3D concrete printing structures can be extended and multiplied across scales and functional domains ranging from structural to architectural elements, so that we can understand how to address questions of scale in their design.

summary This paper describes an on-going research that unites two distinct and seemingly unrelated interests. One is Arabic calligraphy and the other is parametric architecture. The effort is to integrate these interests and, in doing so, balance cultural issues with technological ones, traditional with contemporary and spiritual with material. Moreover, this paper is inspired by Arabic calligraphy and its influence on Zaha Hadid’s designs; it is invigorated by parametric systems and their capacity as a source of architectural forms. This paper will observe the rising importance of computation technologies to architecture, which has always been a form of negotiation between ‘function and fiction’ and ‘force and form’. The paper proposes a Parametric Calligraphic Machine that simultaneously produces, connects and separates calligraphic surfaces, calligraphic images and calligraphic reality. Therefore, the goal is to examine this hypothesis in order to produce a set of techniques, tools and methods that inform the three-dimensional design process of Arabic calligraphy’s contemporary possibilities by addressing a process description rather than a state description of creating calligraphic images and calligraphic surfaces. The theoretical approach highlights issues pertaining to calligraphy, spatiality, translation, generative systems, parametric design, visual structure, force and form.

summary Parametric design is a computational-based approach used for understanding the logic and the language embedded in the design process algorithmically and mathematically. Currently, the main focus of computational models, such as shape grammar and space syntax, is primarily limited to formal and spatial requirements of the design problem. Yet, qualitative factors, such as social, cultural and contextual aspects, are also important dimensions in solving architectural design problems. In this paper, an overview of the advantages and implications of the current methods is presented. It also puts forward a ‘structured analytical system’ that combines the formal and geometric properties of the design, with descriptions that reflect the spatial, social and environmental patterns. This syntactic-discursive model is applied for encoding vernacular courtyard houses in the hot-arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa, and utilising the potentials of these cases in reflecting the lifestyle and the cultural values of the society, such as privacy, human-spatial behaviour, the social life inside the house, the hierarchy of spaces, the segregation and seclusion of family members from visitors and the orientation of spaces. The output of this analytical phase prepares the groundwork for the development of socio-spatial grammar for contemporary tall residential buildings that gives the designer the ability to reveal logical spatial topologies based on socio-environmental restrictions, and to produce alternatives that have an identity while also respecting the context, place and needs of users.

summary Since the emergence of the concept of user-generated content websites – Web 2.0, Internet communications have developed as a powerful personal and social phenomenon. Many Internet applications have become partially or entirely related to the concept of social network; and cyberspace has become a space about ‘us’ not ‘where’ we are. This paper investigates the theoretical grounds of the effect of cyber experience on changing the individuals’ uses of the public spaces, and sustaining this change through maintaining the ties and reciprocal influence between actions in physical and cyber spaces. It aims at examining the impact of cyber territories on the perception, definition and effectiveness of personal space within different circumstances; and its role in changing the uses of spaces where people used to act habitually. The personal space, here, will be represented as the core of both: change and consistency – the space of bridging the reciprocal effect of cyber and physical counterparts, which is transformed through the experience of physical events mediated into the cyberspace. The paper is part of a study which looks at the case of Tahrir Square during the Egyptian political movement in 2011. We will compare the activists’ actions and practices in the Square during different events of non-routine use of the square and its surroundings. The case study will show the level of consistency in the features of the produced personal space within different waves of the revolutionary actions for all that different circumstances, motivations and results.
