summary In this study, Augmented Reality (AR) system is proposed to be used for outdoor renovation and maintenance projects of build- ings. The research proposes an outdoor marker-less AR system that considers the mobility of users and their long relative distance to tar- get buildings where 3D virtual objects should be augmented on. The proposed system uses local feature-based image registration technolo- gy and Structure from Motion (SfM) which reconstructs 3DCG mod- els using photographs from multiple viewpoints. A case study has been performed for a research building renovation scenario at Osaka University. The case study verified the performance of image registra- tion and tracking, and confirmed the applicability of the method.

This article is based on literature review on the topic and interview with the experience of BIM core of a company in Brazil. BIM involves more than just 3D modeling and is also commonly defined into more dimensions, such as 4D (time), 5D (cost), 6D (the built - operation) and 7D (sustainability). The use of BIM can now be considered a reality that will promote changes to Construction.

The knowledge of these projects bring contributions to the graphic design in an expanded context in which graphic-visual messages are transmitted in different media and environments and hypermedia platform where sound participate actively such as applications for mobile devices, projections on walls, installations in augmented reality, websites and vignettes. Another issue to consider is the possibility of involvement of other players in real time or acting for the co- edition of message.

summary Greening has been promoted to improve the living condi- tions in urban environments. Quantification of greenery is an im- portant issue to identify the criteria for stakeholders in the process of greening. This research focuses on the quantification of visible green- ery ratio which is defined as the amount of greenery in the field of vi- sion. Some measurement methods of visible greenery ratio have been already proposed. However, the quantification process is usually time consuming and prone to human errors due to manual operations by us- ing an image processing software. Therefore, in this research, the au- thors developed an automated measurement system based on image processing technology for the efficient visible greenery ratio meas- urement. In the verification experiment, the proposed method achieved similar results for extracted pixels of green areas as the tradi- tional manual method, with decreased calculation time. Furthermore, in addition to measuring the current ratio of greenery, this system can visualize possible future changes in visible greenery by adding plant- ing (landscape) design models in an Augmented Reality (AR) envi- ronment. Using the proposed method, an ideal greening environment can be designed and evaluated by end-users, more intuitively. The de- veloped design system is expected to eventually result in increasing the amount of greenery in the urban environment.

summary In early design process, designers employ several media for externalizations of their design ideas which facilitate decision making, discussion and evaluation. Especially models are the most common representation tools and are used generally to understand and make spatial reasoning on the design ideas. Besides the traditional methods, today, the technological developments bring new ways for collaboration and design in 3D; the mobile augmented reality (MAR) technology is one of them. MAR is augmented reality technology which is provided by mobile devices. This study focuses on the early design process of collaborative designers' communication when they are working with the MAR technology. We developed a MAR environment for designers, and conducted an experiment to understand the key elements of the interaction of the designers with the interface. The communication and interaction of the designers are analyzed using the protocol analysis method. The results show that the MAR technology supports the co-design activities encouraging the designers to manipulate the created artefact. The results of the study would be indicative for future studies.

summary Researchers attempt to offer new design tools and technologies to support design process facilitating alternative visualization and representation techniques. This paper describes a comparison study that took place in the Department of Architecture, at the Istanbul Technical University between 2016-2017. We compare when architects designed mass volumes of buildings in an marker-based mobile Augmented Reality (AR) application with that of when they used a collaborative 3D Virtual World. The massing strategy in the AR environment was an additive approach that is to collaboratively design the small parts to make the whole. Alignment and arrangement of the parts were not the main concerns of the designers in AR, instead the functional development of the design proposal, bodily engagements with the design representation, framing and re-framing of the given context and parameters become the discussion topics.

summary Collaboration within Building Information Modeling process is mainly based on file transfer while BIM data being exchanged in either vendor specific file formats or neutral format using Industry Foundation Classes (IFC). However, since the Web enables Cloud-based BIM services, it provides an opportunity to exchange data via Web transfer services. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to investigate what features of Cloud interoperability can assist a network-based BIM data transmission for a collaborative work flow in the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (AEC) industry. This study indicates that Cloud-BIM interoperability needs to deploy major components such as APIs, data transfer protocols, data formats, and standardization to redefine BIM data flow in the Cloud and to reshape the collaboration process.

summary Cost estimate in architectural projects is an important factor for decision-making and financing the project in both early design phase and detailed design phase. In Korea, estimate work based on 2D drawing has generated problems of difference form QTO according to worker’s mistake and know-how. In addition, 2D-based estimation are obtained uncertainty factors of estimation depending on lack of infor- mation due to becoming larger and more complex than any other pro- ject of the architectural project. In order to solve limitations, this study is to suggest an open BIM-based schematic estimation process and a prototype system within the building frame through linking QTO and cost information. This study consists of the following steps: 1) Ana- lysing Level of Detail (LoD) to apply to the process and system, 2) BIM modelling for open BIM-based QTO, 3) Verifying the quality of the BIM model, 4) Developing a schematic estimation prototype sys- tem. This study is expected to improve work efficiency as well as reli- ability of construction cost.

summary There is a common expectation of technology to better help us manage the complexity of life and to simplify our daily tasks. However, these developments also raise a question of whether design technologies encourage complexity at the expense of simplicity in the design process. Does computation cause complexity? Or does it enable simplicity? This paper aims to answer these key questions, posed as the main focus of the eCAADe 2016 Conference, by confronting different approaches to teaching Building Information Modelling (BIM) in schools of Architecture. The scope of the paper is based on both the author's knowledge of recent BIM implementations in the academic curricula and experiments conducted at Lodz University of Technology. Necessary prerequisites enabling understanding the complex knowledge are discussed. What is more, the scheme for the integrated BIM pedagogy is proposed.

summary In building information modelling (BIM), the amount of in- formation increased and architectural design processes became more complex as projects expand. This is because while a collaboration en- vironment is important for smooth communication among experts, this has not been realised because of unclassified file synchronisation and permission settings among team members. Therefore, this study aims to support cooperation in BIM modelling projects by synchronising BIM data from different computers and rendering BIM project man- agement easier by providing a BIM model viewer and data through the Web. The proposed technology, which is a construction project- type, purpose-tailored browsing technology, provides BIM infor- mation related to construction environments and planning processes only to the relevant experts.

summary Common problems tend to surface during the restoration and maintenance of wooden structures for architectural heritage: (1) recording and communicating geometric and non-geometric infor- mation, (2) integrating and managing the multiple phases of construc- tion and (3) the structural damage that can be incurred during the dis- mantling process. This leads to less confidence in the quality of restoration and maintenance. This study considers the traditional wooden structures in Taiwan as a basis to discuss the issues faced dur- ing restoration and the gap in communication between designers and builders. Using new techniques, resources and the concept of BIM, a plugin is developed for guiding restoration. It serves as a BIM-based communication platform for designers and builders, enabling the real- time exchange of information to minimise any gaps that may exist be- tween the designers’ information and that of the builders. This allows information related to the restoration to be more accurate and offers the assurance that the traditional architecture retains its original struc- ture and value.

summary The topic "Crowdthinking" reveals the inquiries of researchers about collaborative work, distributed intelligence and collective research. The call focuses on transdisciplinary thinking as a construct based on multiplicity and diversity. All these topics are essential not only in the field of design and architecture, but also in emerging areas of human sciences and arts . Currently, the collaborative design is considered one of the key bases for change in the city and society. In its genesis, it manifests the notion that the world around us is inadequate for many of the needs of the society and from that design can be collectively improved. Such collective research, by combining distributed intelligence, sustainable social development, design cutting edge research, theories and computational strategies, generates a research partnership based on participation and distributed cognition of complex problems. This call proposes an approach in which the results of the experiences can build a model, define or apply axioms and lead to applications. It also looks for emerging conjectures about the process, the creation of computer models and the behaviour of the resulting designs. On the other hand, the need to find solutions that improve the quality of life for the community and sustainable development includes concerns about the integration of the physical and cultural context of cities, mass education and the inclusion of parametric design, digital manufacturing and digital prototyping, and BIM as a system that organizes and ensures the correspondence between the physical urban design and sustainable archetypes. These are some of the concerns in which technology has been contributing to improve the design process by integrating information. This integration optimizes resources and enables the various project professionals to work on the same model, run simulations, improve materializations and evaluate massive amount of data. Projects with greater social and environmental responsibility can be achieved adopting into the teaching and practice this new way of design that anticipates an extensive exchange that wilt foster self-evaluation and reformulation of educational paradigms.

summary TopoBIM is a 3D web-based viewer for BIM data that facilitates the capture of stakeholder knowledge related to project requirements and constraints in early design. The software provides an interface for viewing 3D models and data for selected room types and adding topological annotations. The use of topological representation is proposed as a method for facilitating knowledge capture, allowing decisions about the details of plan layout to be deferred and widening the potential for participation in the early stage design process. Topological representation is widely employed in the engineering disciplines, but is not commonly used as a means of capturing schematic information in early design. TopoBIM is proposed as a methodology and workflow for the introduction of topology in early design, and as an example of lightweight, bespoke software that informs design by allowing stakeholders to perform specific tasks using BIM data, without the constraints and limiting complexity of BIM authoring environments.

summary This study elaborates on recent efforts in applying Digital Prototyping strategies to realize a prefabricated construction system that allows for significant flexibility and adaptability in housing design. The rational of the described model is based on combining advanced BIM modeling with structural analysis, towards achieving high accuracy in the design phase, leading to subsequent precision in fabrication and assembly of a specific building system; the BONE Structure. Such an application aims at delivering significant levels of detailing in design and production of the system's components, thus supporting the intention of pre-defined assembly on jobsites, leveraging quality, and reducing waste. The paper represents a phase from a continuous research endeavor that aims at exploring technological enablers for mass customization in the housing realm, based on advanced levels of digitization of the design and production processes.

summary MOLIT authorised Indoor Spatial Information as Basic spa- tial information in 2013. It became a legal evidence for constructing and managing Indoor Spatial Information. Although it has a little ad- vantage to utilise as service level that Indoor Spatial Information by laser scan or measurement, it has a lot of problems such as consuming many resources, requiring additional progresses for inputting Object Information. In conclusion, it is inefficient to utilise for the mainte- nance and domestic AEC/FM field. The purposes of this study is to output Indoor Spatial Information by operating IFC model which based on open BIM and to improve availability of Indoor Spatial In- formation with data visualisation. The open-sources of IFC Exporter, an inner program of Revit, is used to output Indoor Spatial Infor- mation. Directs 3D Library is also operated to visualise Indoor Spatial Information. It is possible to inter-operate between XML format and the objects of Indoor Spatial Information. It can be utilised in various field as well. For example COBie linkage in facility management, construction of geo-database using air-photogrammetry of UA V , the simulation of large-scale military operations and the simulation of large-scale evacuation. The method that is purposed in this study has outstanding advantages such as conformance with national spatial in- formation policy, high level of interoperability as indoor spatial in- formation objects based on IFC, convenience of editing information, light level of data and simplifying progress of producing information.

summary This paper proposes a novel concept and practice to engage the BIM model as a control system of building energy performance service. This issue can be divided into two sub-issues including the development of more eco-friendly fac?ade which can interact with its local environment, and the related active control system which can process the environmental parameters for eco-friendly actions. This research designs the Parametric Adaptive Skin System (PASS) to en- gage the adaption of natural sunlight use for higher building perfor- mance. PASS consists of kinetic fac?ade components dominated by the BIM-based parametric engine called Dynamo. The PASS prototype demonstrates that the workflows is successful in using a real light sen- sor plus simulated solar terms to drive the interaction of virtual Revit model and physical PASS model.

summary With the growing responsibility for the environmental load of building, the demand for sustainable building is increasing. Sus- tainable design requires an enormous amount of information, and most of this information can be captured by Building Information Modelling (BIM). In this context, the management of information in a BIM object as a container for exchanging information is necessary for analyzing a building’s sustainability. However, there are problems in generating a reliable sustainability simulation model from BIM, such as the inefficiency of required information and low accessibility to a proper BIM object. In order to provide a new approach for generating a reliable sustainability simulation model in a BIM-based design pro- cess, this study suggests the integrated management environment of the property information of a BIM object.

summary This paper presents a system for simulating human behaviour in built heritage artefacts aimed at supporting the decision-making processes for their possible re-use.Its goal is to predict the mutual influence between the occupancy phenomena and the architectural heritage environment, in order to optimise the balance between efficiency requirements of spaces and preservation needs of the heritage artefact. The proposed system is based on the integration of a BIM environment with a game engine that allows the modelling of the built environment and the simulation of its use phenomena at the same time. A central role in the systems is played by the distribution of Artificial Intelligence among Virtual Users, process entities (the activities) and the building components, ensuring the coherent representation of the use processes and the direct measurement of their impact on the artefact.
