summary Cities are continuously produced through entropic processes that mediate between complex networked systems and the immediacy urban life. Emergent media technologies inform new relationships between information and matter, code and space to redefine new urban ecosystems. Modes of perceiving, experiencing and inhabiting cities are radically changing along with a radical transformation of the tools that we use to design. Cities as complex and systemic organisms require approaches that engage new multi-scalar strategies to connect the physical layer with the system of networked ecologies. This paper aims at investigating emerging and novel forms of reading and producing urban spaces reimagining the physical city through intelligent and mediated processes. Through data agency and responsive urban processes, the design methodology explored the materialization of a temporary pneumatic structure and membrane that tested material performance through fabrication and sensing practices through the pneuSENSE project developed in July 2016 in New York at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the 'HyperCities' IaaC- Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia - Global Summer School.

summary The topic "Crowdthinking" reveals the inquiries of researchers about collaborative work, distributed intelligence and collective research. The call focuses on transdisciplinary thinking as a construct based on multiplicity and diversity. All these topics are essential not only in the field of design and architecture, but also in emerging areas of human sciences and arts . Currently, the collaborative design is considered one of the key bases for change in the city and society. In its genesis, it manifests the notion that the world around us is inadequate for many of the needs of the society and from that design can be collectively improved. Such collective research, by combining distributed intelligence, sustainable social development, design cutting edge research, theories and computational strategies, generates a research partnership based on participation and distributed cognition of complex problems. This call proposes an approach in which the results of the experiences can build a model, define or apply axioms and lead to applications. It also looks for emerging conjectures about the process, the creation of computer models and the behaviour of the resulting designs. On the other hand, the need to find solutions that improve the quality of life for the community and sustainable development includes concerns about the integration of the physical and cultural context of cities, mass education and the inclusion of parametric design, digital manufacturing and digital prototyping, and BIM as a system that organizes and ensures the correspondence between the physical urban design and sustainable archetypes. These are some of the concerns in which technology has been contributing to improve the design process by integrating information. This integration optimizes resources and enables the various project professionals to work on the same model, run simulations, improve materializations and evaluate massive amount of data. Projects with greater social and environmental responsibility can be achieved adopting into the teaching and practice this new way of design that anticipates an extensive exchange that wilt foster self-evaluation and reformulation of educational paradigms.

summary Finding an attractive or best-fit neighborhood for a new resident of any city is not only important from the perspective of the resident him or herself, but has larger implications for developers and city planners. The environment or mood of the right neighborhood is not simply created through traditional characteristics such as income, crime, or zoning regulations - more ephemeral traits related to user-perception also have significant weight. Using datasets and tools previously unassociated with real-estate decision-making and neighborhood planning, such as social media and machine learning, we create a non-deterministic and customized way of discovering and understanding neighborhoods. Our project creates a customizable ranking system for the 195 neighborhoods in New York City that helps users find the one that best matches their preferences. Our team has developed a composite weighted score with urban spatial data and social media data to rank all NYC neighborhoods based on a series of questions asked to the user. The project's contribution is to provide a scientific and calibrated understanding of the impact that socially oriented activities and preferences have towards the uses of space.

summary With this paper, the authors aim to contribute to the discourse on bending-active structures by highlighting two different design methods, form-finding and form-conversion. The authors compare the two methods through close analysis of bending-active plate structures, discussing their advantages and disadvantages based on three built case studies. This paper introduces the core ideas behind bending-active structures, a rather new structural system that makes targeted use of large elastic deformations to generate and stabilize complex geometrical forms based on initially planar elements. Previous research has focused mainly on form-finding. As a bottom-up approach, it begins with flat plates and recreates the bending and coupling process digitally to gradually determine the final shape. Form-conversion, conversely, begins with a predefined shape that is then discretized by strategic surface tiling and informed mesh subdivision, and which in turn considers the geometrical and structural constraints given by the plates. The three built case studies exemplify how these methods integrate into the design process. The first case study applies physical and digital form-finding techniques to build a chaise lounge. The latter two convert a desired shape into wide-spanning constructions that either weave multiple strips together or connect distant layers with each other, providing additional rigidity. The presented case studies successfully prove the effectiveness of form-finding and form-conversion methods and render a newly emerging design space for the planning, fabrication, and construction of bending-active structures.

summary This research develops a methodological framework for computational analysis and generation of traditional Chinese private gardens, powered by two well-known algorithms in the field, with Space Syntax for analysis and parametric design for generation. Ap- plying this framework, the paper commences with an analysis of two different categories of Chinese private gardens using selected Space Syntax techniques. Next, mathematical measurements derived from the analysis are used as the basis to capture essential spatial patterns in these two garden types. These quantitative results are then used to di- rect the development of a parametric design system to generate new design instances that share the same spatial patterns of the original traditional Chinese private gardens. The effectiveness of this computa- tional approach is demonstrated through two case studies, Yuyuan Garden and Wangshiyuan Garden, both located in Southeast China and each representing a different category of traditional Chinese pri- vate gardens with a typical planning structure. The outcomes of the paper contribute to potential new insights about these important herit- age sites, and demonstrate a formal approach to their computational analysis and generation.

summary The task of geography is to establish a critical system which embraces the phenomenology of space in order to grasp all of its meaning in the varied terrestrial scene (Sauer 1925). Brownfields are a global geographic concern that have been considerably researched within the universal discourse. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and its tools have been widely used to enhance and optimize urban plans during both design and implementation phases. Nonetheless, the connection between the two is often broken. While greenfield development enjoys the employment and implementation of a wide array of CAD tools, brownfield redevelopment projects are still struggling with traditional planning and management methods. Looking at the association between sustainable brownfield redevelopment and the optimization of CAD tools and software in the city of Amman, Jordan, the paper attempts to shed light on the unfulfilled potentials of advancement the spatial tools have to offer to the ongoing quest for sustainable urban development on the local scale and the global debate around the urban paradox on the wider scheme. Using empirical data collected and processed in response to the problem posed, the results indicate a CAD-based model could streamline sustainable brownfield development and save substantial time and resources which would otherwise be required using traditional methods. The paper therefore argues that the need for a comprehensive computer aided intervention for the development and management of marginal and overlooked geographies of brownfields in the city of Amman is long overdue.

summary Aristotle in his treatise, On the Soul, defined memory as knowledge of the past, obtained through seeing, sensing, observing, listening and learning. Memory can be envisaged as the mental imprint of an image that can be recalled through the experience of existing objects and places. How is cultural heritage related to the experience and knowledge called memory? Why do memories appear to have a strong influence in unconscious spatial perception? How can visualisation techniques activate heritage-memory? Buildings, as tangible elements of the historic city, disclose the memories of the past into the present, and direct us to an experience of time through matter. Buildings serve as a link bridging the past with the present, and eventually, the future sites of memory. Their fabric is constantly altered with engraved layers of historical change, a sequence of past events which emerge from the remnants of their structure. The past, imprinted on the city’s artefacts, manifests its tangible form, and through a new reading of heritage, as ‘heritage-memory’, immaterial qualities of previous eras can perhaps be revealed. This paper, part of an ongoing research situated in between theory and practice, argues that the immaterial elements of cultural heritage emerging from historic urban spaces, can be critically explored in a new way through the use of digital technology, as a tool to revisualise the memory of a locus. Taking Chambers Street in the Old Town of Edinburgh as a site of focus, this presentation demonstrates several steps towards visualising the heritage-memory of the site. The paper poses the question of how the site might serve as a memorial itself, revealing to the observer the knowledge of past events engraved on its locus. Chambers Street serves as a paradigm of constructing a virtual narrative of heritage-memory, examining the site in parts and whole.

summary Within the contemporary condition, turbulence that confronts architecture is no longer unpredictable weather patterns or wild beasts, but the unintended forces of a constantly connected digital infrastructure that demands constant attention. If, as Mark Wigley puts it, “architecture is always constructed in and against a storm” it is time for architecture to reevaluate its ability to separate us from a new storm-one that situates technology, global connectivity, human, non-human and composite users, and algorithmic architecture itself as new weather systems. Toward this end, this paper explores architecture’s ability to mediate and produce algorithmic turbulence generated through image-based sensing of the built environment. Through a close reading of Le Corbusier’s Urbanisme, we argue that for much of the 20th and the early part of the 21st century, cities have been designed to produce diagrams of smooth and homogenous flows. However, distributed personal technologies produce virtual layers that unevenly map onto the city, resulting in turbulent forces that computational platforms aim to conceal behind a visual narrative of accuracy, cohesion, anticipation, and order. By focusing on SIFT algorithms and their ability to extract n-dimensional vectors from two-dimensional images, this research explores computational workflows that mobilize turbulence towards the production of indeterminate form. These forms demarcate a new kind of challenge for both architecture and the city, whereby a cultural appetite to deploy algorithms that produce a smooth and seamless image of the world comes hand in hand with the turbulent and disruptive autonomy of those very same algorithms. By revisiting Urbanisme, a new set of architectural objectives are established that contextualize SIFTS within an urban agenda.

title Reciprocal transformations between music and architecture as a real-time supporting mechanism in urban design

summary The more complex our cities become, the more difficult it is for designers to use traditional tools for understanding and analyzing the inner essence of an eco-system such as the contemporary urban environment. Even many of the recently crafted digital tools fail to address the necessity for a more holistic design approach which captures the virtual and the physical, the immaterial and the material. Handling of massive chunks of information and classification and assessment of diverse data are nowadays more crucial than ever before. We see a significant potential in combining the fields of composition in music and architecture through the use of information technology. Merging the two fields has the intense potential to release new, innovative tools for urban designers. This article describes an innovative tool developed at the Technical University of Crete, through which an urban designer can work on the music transcription of a specific urban environment applying music compositional rules and filters in order to identify discordant entities, highlight imbalanced parts, and make design corrections. Our cities can be tuned.

summary New operation frameworks and user-oriented design methods are needed to make better use of new innovative technologies within smart city contexts. This paper addresses the design and research of intelligent lighting and user-oriented services for smart city environments. It presents the problem setting and research and development methods of the SenCity project. The project will pilot smart lighting solutions in six Finnish cities in different kinds of urban environments. In the pilots, the target is to employ lighting infrastructure as a service platform - an Internet of Things backbone - in the intelligent city. Together, separate pilots in different cities around Finland will create a living lab ecosystem for developing and testing innovative solutions. The specific objective of this paper is to present the concept of a platform as defined and applied in SenCity project. The presented framework forms an operational model for creating intelligent lighting and digital services in smart cities by integrating relevant technologies, users' needs, and business into an interactive system. In the paper, the framework is applied to a selection of pilot cases with specific themes to introduce its usability in real world implementations.

summary This project applies techniques in machine learning, specifically generative adversarial networks (or GANs), to produce synthetic images intended to capture the predominant visual properties of urban places. We propose that imaging cities in this manner represents the first computational approach to documenting the Genius Loci of a city (Norberg-Schulz, 1980), which is understood to include those forms, textures, colors, and qualities of light that exemplify a particular urban location and that set it apart from similar places. Presented here are methods for the collection of urban image data, for the necessary processing and formatting of this data, and for the training of two known computational statistical models (StyleGAN (Karras et al., 2018) and Pix2Pix (Isola et al., 2016)) that identify visual patterns distinct to a given site and that reproduce these patterns to generate new images. These methods have been applied to image nine distinct urban contexts across six cities in the US and Europe, the results of which are presented here. While the product of this work is not a tool for the design of cities or building forms, but rather a method for the synthetic imaging of existing places, we nevertheless seek to situate the work in terms of computer-assisted design (CAD). In this regard, the project is demonstrative of a new approach to CAD tools. In contrast with existing tools that seek to capture the explicit intention of their user (Aish, Glynn, Sheil 2017), in applying computational statistical methods to the production of images that speak to the implicit qualities that constitute a place, this project demonstrates the unique advantages offered by such methods in capturing and expressing the tacit.

summary The idea of the Creative City has encouraged planners to develop cultural policies to support creative economies, city branding, urban identity and urban quality. On the other side, the concept of Smart City introduced the possibility to create, collect and analyse data to inform decisions on cities. The two city agendas overlap in different ways, creating a Smart cultural city nexus, that propose similar goals and mixed methodologies, like the possibility to inform planning processes with big data-based technologies. In line with this direction, we introduced conceptual and methodological tools: the first tool is the definition of Hybrid Art Spaces, the second tool is the Singapore Art Maps (SAM), which uses social media data to locate art venues in cities (Tomarchio et al. 2016); the third tool is the Social Media Art Model, which establishes a relationship between social media production and art venues features. While these tools have already shown interesting analytics outcomes (Tomarchio et al. 2016), it is important to validate their utility among practitioners and to set protocols of practices. This paper presents results from semi-structured interviews and a focus group, as a first step towards assessing the usefulness of our three tools for cultural planning practice.

summary This paper presents a methodology to collect and visualize social media data about art, in order to map art locations in cities using geo-localized data, and comparing planning decisions with the actual use of spaces. As various social networks have penetrated into the daily life of people, these become one important and effective data source to understand how people perform 'arts' around the city [Shah, 2015]. The case study for this methodology is Singapore, a vibrant city where art and culture are being promoted in the light of an emerging creative economy. The Singapore government promotes art and creates 'art clusters', such as art districts, galleries, fairs and museums in the city. Additionally, artists, creative entrepreneurs, consumers, and critics seek and explore alternative spaces. Modular curiosity-based machine learning behaviour is supported by a highly distributed system of microprocessor hardware integrated within interlinked cellular arrays of sound, light, kinetic actuators and proprioreceptive sensors in a resilient physical scaffolding system. The curiosity-based system involves exploration by employing an expert system composed of archives of information from preceding behaviours, calculating potential behaviours together with locations and applications, executing behaviour and comparing result to prediction. Prototype architectural structures entitled Sentient Canopy and Sentient Chamber developed during 2015 and 2016 were developed to support this interactive behaviour, integrating new communications protocols and firmware, and a hybrid proprioreceptive system that configured new electronics with sound, light, and motion sensing capable of internal machine sensing and externally- oriented sensing for human interaction. Proprioreception was implemented by producing custom electronics serving photoresistors, pitch-sensing microphones, and accelerometers for motion and position, coupled to sound, light and motion-based actuators and additional infrared sensors designed for sensing of human gestures. This configuration provided the machine system with the ability to calculate and detect real-time behaviour and to compare this to models of behaviour predicted within scripted routines. Testbeds located at the Living Architecture Systems Group/Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (LASG/PBAI, Waterloo/Toronto), Centre for Information Technology (CITA, Copenhagen) National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in Washington DC are illustrated.

summary This research documents our initial experiences of using a new type of collaborative, industrial robot in the area of architecture, design, and construction. The KUKA LBR-iiwa differs from common robotic configurations in that it uses seven axes with integrated force-torque sensors and can be programmed in the Java programming language. Its force-sensitivity makes it safe to interact with, but also enables entirely new applications that use hand-guiding and utilize the force-sensors to compensate for high tolerances on building sites, similar to how we manually approach assembly tasks. Especially for the creative industry, the Java programming opens up completely new applications that would have previously required complex bus systems or industrial data interfaces. We will present a series of realized projects that showcase some of the potential of this new type of collaborative, safe robot, and discuss the advantages and limitations of the robotic system.

summary We are introducing a new teaching tool to show designers, architects, and artists procedural ways of constructing objects and space. Computational algorithms have been used in design for quite some time, but not all tools are very accessible to novice programmers, especially undergraduate students. ‘Beetle Blocks’ (beetleblocks.com) is a software environment that combines an easy-to-use graphical programming language with a generative model for 3D space, drawing on ‘turtle geometry,’ a geometry paradigm introduced by Abelson and Disessa, that uses a relative as opposed to an absolute coordinate system. With Beetle Blocks, designers are able to learn computational concepts and use them for their designs with more ease, as individual computational steps are made visually explicit. The beetle, the relative coordinate system, follows instructions as it moves about in 3D space. Anecdotal evidence from studio teaching in undergraduate programs shows that despite the early introduction of digital media and tools, architecture students still struggle with learning formal languages today. Beetle Blocks can significantly simplify the teaching of complex geometric ideas and we explain how this can be achieved via several examples. The blocks-based programming language can also be used to teach fundamental concepts of manufacturing and digital fabrication and we elucidate in this paper which possibilities are conducive for 2D and 3D designs. This project was previously implemented in other languages such as Flash, Processing and Scratch, but is now developed on top of Berkeley’s ‘Snap!’

summary Since the time architecture and construction began embracing robotics, the pre-fab movement has grown rapidly. As the possibilities for new design and fabrication emerge from creativity and need, the application and use of new robotic technologies becomes vital. This movement has been largely focused on the deployment of industrial-type robots used in the (automobile) manufacturing industry for decades, as well as trying to apply these technologies into off-site building construction. Beyond the pre-fab (off-site) conditions, on-site fabrication offers a valuable next step to implement new construction methods and reduce human work-related injuries. The main challenge in introducing on-site robotic fabrication/construction is the difficulty in calibrating robot navigation (localization) in an unstructured and constantly changing environment. Additionally, advances in robotic technology, similar to the revolution of at-home 3D printing, shift the ownership of modes of production from large industrial entities to individuals, allowing for greater levels of design and construction customization. This paper demonstrates a low-cost humanoid robot as highly customizable technology for floor tiling. A novel end-effector design to pick up tiles was developed, along with a localization system that can be applied to a wide variety of robots.

summary Unlike any other building material, timber has seen numerous innovations in design, manufacturing, and assembly processes in recent years. Currently available technology not only allows architects to freely shape building elements but also to define their micro- or macroscopic material make-up and therefore the material itself. At the same time, timber shells have become a focus of research in wood architecture by rethinking both construction typologies and material application. Their main advantage, however, also poses a challenge to its construction: As the shell is both the load-bearing structure as well as enclosure, its segmentation and the individual segment’s connections become increasingly important. Their complex and often differentiated geometries do not allow for standardized timber joints, and with decreasing material thickness, conventional connection techniques become less feasible. The research presented in this paper investigates textile strategies for the fabrication of ultra-lightweight timber shells in architecture. Specifically, a robotic sewing method is developed in conjunction with a computational design method for the development of a new construction system that was evaluated through a large-scale prototype building.
