summary The paper focuses on possibilities of already known engineering procedures such as Finite Element Method or Topology Optimisation for effective implementation in architectural design process. The existing attempts of complex engineering algorithms implementation, as a form finding approach will be discussed. The review of architectural approaches utilising engineering methods will be supplemented by the author's own solution for that particular problem. By intersecting architectural form evaluation with engineering analysis complemented by optimisation algorithms, the new quality of contemporary architecture design process may appears.

summary The update in the design process associated with a constant search for efficient construction methods, budgets and actual schedules, passes through common terms the planning engineering and constructability, rationalization and integration. This article is based on literature review on the topic and interview with the experience of BIM core of a company in Brazil. BIM involves more than just 3D modeling and is also commonly defined into more dimensions, such as 4D (time), 5D (cost), 6D (the built - operation) and 7D (sustainability). The use of BIM can now be considered a reality that will promote changes to Construction.

summary This paper is part of a body of research developing an exploratory dialogue between the built form and the environment, via experimentation with performative geometry and material. Here, geometry is considered a design material with the specific capacity to contribute to the performative aspects and kinetic capabilities of building skins.This work opens with a review of emerging opportunities for architects to design materials. It then discusses the concept of Material Active Geometry (MAG) as a means of designing new properties for existing materials. This is followed by a discussion of MAG principles that inform the concepts of flexibility and rigidity in a 3D-printed textile called Flexible Textile Structure (FTS). This research characterizes two FTS types and discusses their potential to be employed in building skins; it also considers combinatory approaches to computational models and physical prototyping. The work concludes with a discussion of the advantages of using FTS, and provides a trajectory for future research in the field of responsive materials and systems.

summary The timber industry is expanding, including construction wood product applications such as glue-laminated wood products (R. Sikkema et al., 2023). To boost further utilisation of engineered wood products in architecture, further development and optimisation of related tectonic systems is required. Integration of digital design technologies in this endeavour presents opportunities for a more performative and spatially diverse architecture production, even in construction contexts typified by limited means and/or resources. This paper reports on historic precedent case study research that informs an ongoing larger study focussing on novel algorithmic methods for the design and production of lightweight, large-span, catenary glulam roof structures. Given their structural operation in full tension, catenary-based roof structures substantially reduce material needs when compared with those relying on straight beams (Wong and Crolla, 2019). Yet, the manufacture of their non-standard geometries typically requires costly bespoke hardware setups, having resulted in recent projects trending away from the more spatially engaging geometric experiments of the second half of the 20th century. The study hypothesis that the evolutionary design optimisation of this tectonic system has the potential to re-open and expand its practically available design solution space. This paper covers the review of a range of built projects employing catenary glulam roof system, starting from seminal historic precedents like the Festival Hall for the Swiss National Exhibition EXPO 1964 (A. Lozeron, Swiss, 1964) and the Wilkhahn Pavilions (Frei Otto, Germany, 1987), to contemporary examples, including the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre (HCMA Architecture + Design, Canada, 2016). It analysis their structural concept, geometric and spatial complexity, fabrication and assembly protocols, applied construction detailing solutions, and more, with as aim to identify methods, tools, techniques, and construction details that can be taken forward in future research aimed at minimising construction complexity. Findings from this precedent study form the basis for the evolutionary-algorithmic design and construction method development that is part of the larger study. By expanding the tectonic system’s practically applicable architecture design solution space and facilitating architects’ access to a low-tech producible, spatially versatile, lightweight, eco-friendly, wooden roof structure typology, this study contributes to environmentally sustainable building.

summary This article analyses the possibilities of expansion of the museum's exhibition space for the urban environment and the new relationships through the development of digital maps and augmented reality geolocated layers. The case study is the Guide of Nomadic Monuments (Guia dos Monumentos Nômades) organized for the exhibition Memory of Amnesia (Memória da Amnésia) that discussed the movement and displacement of statues through the last decades in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The experience of the project is presented from the point of view of the methodological design research, thinking the interface of the city as a backdrop for several experimentations with art collections.

summary Timber joinery for furniture and architectural purpose has always been identified as a skill or craft. The craft is the demonstration of hand machined skill and precision which is passed down or developed through the iteration of creation and refined reflection. Using digital fabrication techniques provides new, typically unexplored ways of creating and designing joints. It is as if these limitations which bind the ratio of complexity and use are stretched. This means that these joints, from a technical standpoint, can be more advanced than historically hand-made joints as digital machines are not bound by the limitations of the human. The research investigated in this paper explores the ability to create sets of joints in a parametric environment that will be produced with CNC machines, thus redefining the idea of the joint through contemporary tools of creation and fabrication. The research also aims to provide a seamless, digital workflow from the flexible, parametric creation of the joint to the final physical fabrication of it. Traditional joints, more simple in shape and assembly, were first digitally created to ease the educational challenges of learning a computational workflow that entailed the creation and fabrication of geometrically programmed joints. Following the programming and manufacturing of these traditional joints, more advanced and complex joints were created as the understanding of the capabilities of the software and CNC machines developed. The more complex and varied joints were taken from a CAD virtual environment and tested on a 3-axis CNC machine and 3D printer. The transformation from the virtual environment to the physical highlighted areas that required further research and testing. The programmed joint was then refined using the feedback from the digital to physical process creating a more robust joint that was informed by reality.

summary New advances in 3D modelling and visualization tools for large-scale landscape and construction projects have been achieved recently. The introduction of the new 3D digital modelling and visualization tools, e.g. CAD, VR, GIS and BIM initiated a huge shift in the way planners and designers develop, communicate and present project scenarios. This paper outlines the challenges, new trends and workflows connected to the use of new tools and how it’s been practiced and experienced by professionals and stakeholders as observed in Norway. The observation shows that the latest developments are providing new potentials for performing better communication and collaboration. Planners could now demonstrate many aspects of a project which exceed the usual minimum requirements. An important functionality is the capability to work with huge amount of data-sets for large-scale projects which were previously almost impossible to work with.

summary Fibre composites are synthetic in their composition, but structured similarly to biological materials, as fibre and matrix. While the fibre constituent in Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is mostly used under the form of fabrics, its standard fabrication processes do not rely on its inherent textile attributes. Embedding the fabric qualities in the fabrication of architectural FRP can potentially introduce concepts and properties of biological materials into engineered fibre composites; it can promote and enable the generation of an architectural complexity of a biological nature. The paper presents Fabric Materiality as a framework for a new design and fabrication process and demonstrates through a case study its integration in the fabrication of architectural FRP elements to achieve a complex structure with bio-inspired properties.

summary MeasureIt-ARCH is A GNU GPL licensed, dimension, annotation, and drawing tool for use in the open source software Blender. By providing free and open tools for the reading and editing of architectural drawings, MeasurIt-ARCH allows works of architecture to be shared, read, and modified by anyone. The digitization of architectural practice over the last 3 decades has brought with it a new set of inter-disciplinary discourses for the profession. An attempt to utilise 'Open-Source' methodologies, co-opted from the world of software development, in order to make high quality design more affordable, participatory and responsible has emerged. The most prominent of these discussions are embodied in Carlo Raitti and Mathew Claudel's manifesto 'Open-Source Architecture' (Ratti 2015) and affordable housing initiatives like the Wikihouse project (Parvin 2016). MeasurIt-ARCH aims to be the first step towards creating a completely Open-Source design pipeline, by augmenting Blender to a level where it can be used produce small scale architectural works without the need for any proprietary software, serving as an exploratory critique on the user experience and implementations of industry standard dimensioning tools that exist on the market today.

summary This paper illustrates a fabrication methodology through which the inherent form of large non-linear timber components was exploited in the Wood Chip Barn project by the students of Design + Make at the Architectural Association’s Hooke Park campus. Twenty distinct Y-shaped forks are employed with minimal machining in the construction of a structural truss for the building. Through this workflow, low-value branched sections of trees are transformed into complex and valuable building components using non-standard technologies. Computational techniques, including parametric algorithms and robotic fabrication methods, were used for execution of the project. The paper addresses the various challenges encountered while processing irregular material, as well as limitations of the robotic tools. Custom algorithms, codes, and post-processors were developed and integrated with existing software packages to compensate for drawbacks of industrial and parametric platforms. The project demonstrates and proves a new methodology for working with complex, large geometries which still results in a low cost, time- and quality-efficient process.

summary Cultural heritage is traditionally mediated through institu- tional bodies that are authorised to broadcast heritage information, whereas new media technologies such as social media platforms con- tinue to enforce individual storytelling and information sharing. Therefore GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) have to cope with a shift of public interest from their services to more ac- cessible, entertaining and democratic engagements available as ‘liv- ing’ media. Unmediated cultural heritage is the paramount aim of this work and, in a theoretical sense, a utopia for generation of authenticity or meaning-making. Within the realm of digital heritage, this study explores the nature of engagement with cultural heritage using an in- novative means. In this phase of the research, a photogrammetric model of Kashgar’s narrow alleys is deployed in a system, called Hy- brid Virtual Environment 3D (Hyve-3D). Via its 3D cursor technolo- gy, the concept of unmediated cultural heritage is unfolded through active participation, collaboration and interaction. Thus, in the context of heritage, this research explores a hitherto undocumented frontier of Hyve-3D designated to immersive collaborative 3D sketching.

summary Architectural offices have been using rendered images in their electronic portfolios. What are the characteristics of these images? Is there any prevalent technique? Has a standard presentation already been established? This article presents a research that analyzed the rendered images found on the website of Jacobsen Arquitetura, one of the 25 offices elected in 2010 as the "new generation of Brazilian architecture". This study is part of the authors' research, which aims to identify how Brazilian contemporary architectural offices, which stand out in the architectural field, deal with these issues. The results provide subsidies for reflection on Brazilian architectural field, consequently, on architects and urban planners' education.

summary A thin line lies between reality and fiction; what is mentally imagined and what is visualized. It all depends on how ideas and images are perceived or what neurological activity is triggered in the user’s brain. Architects and designers spare no effort or tools in presenting buildings, architecture or designs in all forms or ways that would augment users’ experience whether on the perceptual or the cognitive level and in both the digital or the physical environments. In a progressive tendency they, the designers, tend to rely more and more on digitizing their vision and mission, which subsequently give them, impressive and expressive superiority, that would influence the users conscious on the one hand and manipulate their subconscious on the other. Within that process designers work hard to break any mental firewall that would prevent their ideas from pervading the space of any mental environment the user, build or visualize. In that context, to what extent such ways of mental entertainments used by architects, legitimize deception in design? What distinguishes employing the rhythmic simulation of the narrative fictional inceptions (virtual reality) from deploying the adaptive stimulation of the experience modeling conceptions. The difference between planting an idea and constructing an idea. It is not the intention of the paper to prove the failure of the computer aided design neither to stand against the digital architectural design media and applications development. It is rather to present a different way of understanding of how architectural design whether virtual, digital, or real can stimulates and induces codes and messages that is correlated to the brainwave cognitive attributes and can generate a narrative brain environment where the brain can construct and simulate its own fictional design. Doing so, the paper will review certain experimental architectural events and activities which integrate sound and sight elements and effects within some electronic, technical and digital environments.

summary To be presented, digital books usually require portable reading devices. Given this relationship, understanding their technology is necessary for the proper design of the digital book. So, this article aims to identify the technological characteristics of portable reading devices that influence the digital book design. The study was developed from a literature research and a systematic review. After these procedures, it was inferred that the choice of the technology relies on the main focus of the publication, whether it is interactivity or continuous reading. Furthermore, the technology influences the choice of the digital book format which determines its design possibilities.

summary This paper presents an integrated workflow for interactive design of shell structures, which couples structural and environmental analysis through a multi-agent systems (MAS) for design. The work lies at the intersection of architecture, engineering and computer science research, incorporating generative design with analytical techniques. A brief review on architectural shell structures and the structural logic of reciprocal frames is described. Through the morphological study of reciprocal frames locally we seek to inform the behavior of a MAS, which integrates form-finding techniques, with daylight factor analysis (DFA) and finite element analysis (FEA) on a global configuration. An experimental design is developed in order to explore the solution space of large span free form shells with varying topologies and boundary conditions, as well as identify the relationships between local design parameters of the reciprocal frames (i.e. number of elements, profile) and the analyses (i.e. stress distribution, solar radiation) for enabling the generation of different global design alternatives. The research improves upon design decision-making latency and certainty through harnessing geometric complexity and structural form finding for early stage design. Additionally, the research improves upon design outcomes by establishing a feedback loop between design generation, analysis and performance.

Whereas the first two value the control and accuracy in the processing of information, the third values the uncertainties in the processing of materials. Whereas the first two rely on final product and prior knowledge, the third relies on the processes of formation and flows of matter, and thus is key to a dynamic and sustainable model for design.

summary The research presented here reports on current advances in tying simulation and analysis of environmental building performance to design authoring software. A brief review of developments leading up to the convergence between design authoring and environmental performance testing helps to explain the current status-quo. Many of the applications available today are rooted in early research efforts that date back to the early days of Personal Computers (or even before). A small case study complements the historic review and offers some perspectives about tool selection in an educational design-studio setting.

summary According to eCAADe's mission, the exchange and collaboration within the area of computer aided architectural design education and research, while respecting the pedagogical approaches in the different schools and countries, can be regarded as a core activity. The current session follows up on the first Contextualised Digital Heritage Workshop (CDHW) held on the occasion of eCAADe 2016 in Oulu (D. di Mascio et.al.) This event was thought to represent the first of a series of future contextualized digital heritage workshops and hence, the name Oulu interchangeable with the name of any other city or place. The second CDHW took place in the framework of CAADRIA 2017 in Suzhou (D. di Mascio & M.A. Schnabel) and focussed on sharing and dissemination of heritage information and personal experiences, such as narratives.The primary objective for the 2018 digital heritage session is to engage participants in an active discussion, not the longer format presentation of prepared positions. The round table itself is limited to short opening statements so as to ensure time is allowed for viewpoints to be exchanged and for the conference attendees to join in on the issues discussed. The panel will review past practices with the potential for guiding future direction.

summary The countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council have, in recent years, undertaken several initiatives to make sustainability central to their urban agendas. This research aims to operationalize the concept of sustainable development – environmental, economic and socio-cultural – in the region, and develop parameters that define it. Using native neighborhoods in Abu Dhabi as a case study, it focuses on the development process of a computational toolkit which has two major components – a quantitative toolkit which contains modules for simulation of aspects of environmental and economic sustainability, and a spatial toolkit which contains modules for simulation of socio-spatial practices associated with the specific social and cultural context. One of the primary needs of these communities, identified through an extensive review of literature and through conversations with Emiratis, is that of visual and acoustical privacy. Privacy from neighbors and passers-by, externally, and between genders, internally within the house. Using this as a starting point, this paper describes the development process of a module that aims to measure levels of external visual privacy of surfaces at a housing plot level, from neighbors and passers-by. The first section of the paper establishes the context of the research. The second section focuses on describing the process of modeling built form and testing it for visibility and thus, privacy.
