summary The use of digital tools in the early, creative design process is the focus of an interdisciplinary teaching and research project. Starting from the question of how a seamless connection between physical and digital tools could be made possible, the proposed method tries to bridge the gap between both methodologies and provide intuitive, visual and collaborative design coupled with advanced, real time computer simulations. A design platform has been developed which supports a seamless connection between freely shaped physical models, GIS data and Grasshopper3D. The environment combines the reconstructed physical models with the digital one (surrounding buildings) and passes the information to a custom Grasshopper3D plug-in which serves as a link to existing and custom developed simulative tools. All simulations are performed and visualized in real time to support the intuitive and iterative design process.

summary This paper discusses the development of an interactive and a responsive Tangible User-Interface (TUI) for parametric and Building Information Modeling (BIM) applications. The prototypes presented in this paper utilizes physical computing systems to establish a flexible and intuitive method to engage digital design processes.The prototypes are hybrid UIs that consist of a digital modeling tool and an artifact. The artifact consists of a control system (sensors, actuators, and microcontrollers) and physical objects (architectural elements). The link between both environments associates physical objects with their digital design information to assist users in the digital design process. The integration of physical computing systems will enable the objects to physically respond to analog input and provide real-time feedback to users. The research aims to foster tangible computing methods to extend the capabilities of digital design tools. The prototypes demonstrate a method that allows architects to simultaneously interact with complex architectural systems digitally and physically.

title Printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic Multi-Bias Additive Manufacturing

summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary The implications of architectural design decisions are in many cases hard to predict and envisage. As architectural tasks grow more complex and the design of architecture shifts away from the de- sign of end products towards the steering of dynamic processes, new ways of coping with complexity in the design and planning process are needed. Taking this as its starting point, as well as the need for ar- chitects to use familiar, established design tools, the CDP research group is working on new ways of supporting the design decision- making process with objective information so that designers are better able to manage these complexities. The focus of the group lies on di- rectly coupling interactive simulations and analyses with established design tools. This paper discusses a central problem in this context: how to present complex calculation results directly within a physical 3D-model. The approach described, as evidenced by the realized pro- totype, shows clearly that directly coupling real and digital infor- mation using interactive augmented visualization presents immense possibilities for managing the complexity of planning processes.

This article aims to create a device for bicycle parking aided by a parametrization process using Grasshopper plug-in. Thus, we develop an algorithm in which its parameters can be modified accordingly to the esthetic-formal configuration required by the project. In order to evaluate the effect of a parametric value over the structure and resulting form, a rendering is created with each parameter change to visualize the resulting design interactively.

summary The objective of the project is to design a reproducible clay sculpting process with an industrial robotic arm using parametric con- trol to directly translate mesh geometry from Computer Aided Design (CAD) environment into a lump of clay. This is accomplished through an algorithmic design process developed in Grasshopper using the C# programming language. The design process is enabled by our robotics modelling and simulation library which provides tools for kinematics modelling, motion planning, visual simulation and networked com- munication with the robotic system. Our process generates robot joint axis angle instructions through inverse kinematics which results into linear tool paths realised in physical space. Unlike common subtrac- tive processes such as Computer Numeric Control (CNC) milling where solid material is often pulverised during machining operations, our process employs a carving technique to remove material by dis- placement and deposition due to the soft and self-adhesive nature of the clay material. Optimisation of self-cleaning paths are implemented and integrated into the sculpting process to increase pathing efficiency and end product quality. This paper documents the process developed, the obstacles faced in motion planning of the robotic system and dis- cusses the potential for creative applications in digital fabrication us- ing advanced machines that in certain terms exceed human capability yet in others are unable to reach the quality of handmade works of art.

summary Lighting analysis tools have proven their ability in helping designers provide functional lighting, increase comfort levels and reduce energy consumption in buildings. Consequently, the number of lighting analysis software is increasing and all are competing to provide credible and rigorous analysis. The rapid adoption of parametric design in architecture, however, has resulted in complex forms that make the evaluation of the accuracy of digital analysis more challenging. This study aims to evaluate and compare the performance of daylighting analysis in two industry standard software (Autodesk Revit and 3ds Max) when analysing the daylighting of complex parametric façade patterns. The study has shown that, generally, both Revit and 3ds Max underestimate illuminance values when compared to physical scaled models. 3ds Max was found to outperform Revit when simulating complex parametric patterns, while Revit was found to outperform 3ds Max when simulating simple fenestration geometries. As a general conclusion, the rapid progress of parametric modelling, integrated with fabrication technologies, has made daylighting analysis of complex geometries more challenging. There is a need for more sophisticated algorithms that can handle the increased level of complexity as well as further verification studies to evaluate the accuracy claims made by software vendors.

summary Reviewing the current research trends in robotic fabrication around the world, the trajectory promises new opportunities for innovation in Architecture and the possible redefinition of the role of the Architect in the industry itself. New entrepreneurial, innovative start-ups are popping up everywhere challenging the traditional model of the architect. However, it also poses new questions and challenges in the education of the architect today. What are the appropriate pedagogical methods to instill enthusiasm for new technologies, materials, and craft? How do we avoid the pure application of pre-set tools, such as the use of the laser cutter has become, which in many schools around the world has caused problems rather than solving problems? How do we teach students to invent their tools especially in a society that doesn't have a strong background in the making? The primary focus of this paper is on how architectural CAAD/ CAM education through the use of robotic fabrication can enhance student's understanding, passion and knowledge of materiality, technology, and craftsmanship. The paper is based on the pedagogical set-up and method of an M. Arch I studio that was taught by the author in fall 2016 with the focus on robotic fabrication, materiality, traditional timber construction systems, tool design and digital and physical craftsmanship.

summary While nonlinear concepts are widely applied in analysis and generative design in architecture, they have not yet convincingly translated into the material realm of fabrication and construction. As the gap between digital design model, shop drawing, and fabricated result continues to diminish, we seek to learn from fabrication models and natural systems that do not separate code, geometry, pattern, material compliance, communication, and form, but rather operate within dynamic loops of feedback, reciprocity, and generative fabrication. Three distinct, but connected problems: 1) Robotic ink drawing; 2) Robotic wine pouring and object detection; and 3) Dynamically Adjusted Extrusion; were addressed to develop a toolkit including software, custom digital design tools, and hardware for robotic fabrication and user interaction in cyber-physical contexts. Our primary aim is to simplify and consolidate the multiple platforms necessary to construct feedback networks for robotic fabrication into a central and intuitive programming environment for both the advanced to novice user. Our experimentation in prototyping feedback networks for use with robotics in design practice suggests that the application of this knowledge often follows a remarkably consistent profile. By exploiting these redundancies, we developed a support toolkit of data structures and routines that provide simple integrated software for the user-friendly programming of commonly used roles and functionalities in dynamic robotic fabrication, thus promoting a methodology of feedback-oriented design processes.

summary This project applies techniques in machine learning, specifically generative adversarial networks (or GANs), to produce synthetic images intended to capture the predominant visual properties of urban places. We propose that imaging cities in this manner represents the first computational approach to documenting the Genius Loci of a city (Norberg-Schulz, 1980), which is understood to include those forms, textures, colors, and qualities of light that exemplify a particular urban location and that set it apart from similar places. Presented here are methods for the collection of urban image data, for the necessary processing and formatting of this data, and for the training of two known computational statistical models (StyleGAN (Karras et al., 2018) and Pix2Pix (Isola et al., 2016)) that identify visual patterns distinct to a given site and that reproduce these patterns to generate new images. These methods have been applied to image nine distinct urban contexts across six cities in the US and Europe, the results of which are presented here. While the product of this work is not a tool for the design of cities or building forms, but rather a method for the synthetic imaging of existing places, we nevertheless seek to situate the work in terms of computer-assisted design (CAD). In this regard, the project is demonstrative of a new approach to CAD tools. In contrast with existing tools that seek to capture the explicit intention of their user (Aish, Glynn, Sheil 2017), in applying computational statistical methods to the production of images that speak to the implicit qualities that constitute a place, this project demonstrates the unique advantages offered by such methods in capturing and expressing the tacit.

summary The increasing technological advancements nowadays make the integration of digital tools and techniques in architecture pedagogy a must. A course in the department of architecture at Birzeit University in Palestine was proposed as a summer course in order to introduce students to the possibilities of using digital parametric tools and techniques in architecture design and manufacturing. In reflection of the experiment of the course, in which students were asked to design and construct a temporary pavilion, the paper will examine the potentials and challenges of using parametric digital tools in architecture design, and the way students imagine and conceive the performance of their design ideas virtually and practically. Furthermore, the project proposes that form is not constrained to the form-making process, but form must be a response to a material system and its properties, and thus material should be engaged in the design process. Initial design ideas are explored by building a parametric 3D digital model using a visual scripting platform. This virtual model allows for the evaluation of the performance of the design and the assembly method before realization and, moreover, experiments with design alternatives and forms. The final full-detailed digital model will be used in the fabrication phase to construct a one-to-one scale physical model in the real world, which gives students the chance to get sense and interact with the implemented environment and to experience their designs in real world.

summary Environmentally sound and high-performance buildings are contributing towards a sustainable future. With increased density of contemporary urban space and the urgent desire to promote building performance, a better understanding of wind behaviour will positively influence future design explorations. In the traditional sequential ar- chitectural practice, there is a gap between design and performance simulation. This paper presents an experimental and systematic study of the performance-oriented design tools, strategies and workflows utilized in the concept prototyping of a high-rise building. It describes a new approach to incorporate wind tunnel testing, computational flu- id dynamics simulation as well as parametric software, sensors and open-source electronics platform into an accessible, interactive and low-cost form generation kit, rapidly evaluating the performance of potential design options in the early design stage. As indicated in this research, environmental simulation can be a decision-making tool, in- tegrating the concept of continuity into the design process.

summary The use of models is one of the oldest media for creating, communicating and representing ideas throughout the ages. An investigation into the nature and characteristics of two modelling techniques in architectural design, i.e. physical and digital modeling, was conducted in the educational and professional domains in two countries. The aim of this study was to establish: (a) the degree of tangibility in model making as opposed to conventional and computational design approach; and (b) the iconic limitation of both types of modelling in design. To this end a survey was carried out among practising architects and students of architecture to establish their preferences and practices with respect to physical and virtual modelling. Some face-to-face interviews were conducted and an online questionnaire was distributed to both the aspiring and established architects. Data gathered through the questionnaire survey, interviews and photographs of the modelling process was analysed to come to tangible conclusions. Hence, this paper presents an insight into the merits and demerits of both the physical and virtual modeling techniques as seen through the eyes of professional and training architects.

summary The Egyptian government resorts to prototype housing for low-income citizens to meet the growing demand of the housing market. The problem with the prototype is that it does not meet specific needs. Consequently, users make modifications to the prototype without professional intervention because of the high cost. This paper discusses an automatic multi-stories space planning tool that helps low-income citizens to modify their prototype housing provided by the government. Social, spatial and functional design aspects were set in the original design prototype by an architect. The proposed tool simulates spaces spatial locations in the original design by simulating the analogy of mechanical springs through an interactive simulation of a parametric model. The authors developed the used algorithm in the generative design tool Grasshopper and the live physics engine Kangaroo, both working within the Rhino 3D environment. The algorithm has two versions, one-floor level version and two floors version targeting the wealthier users. Results indicate that this tool integrates with the exploratory nature of the design process even for non-professional users. The authors designed a tool that will help the users to study the effect of the desired modifications against the originally provided prototype, it also makes it easier for users to express their requirements to a professional designer, conserving time and financial cost.

summary Since the 80s, several researches have developed the theoretical notions of sound effects, sound proxemy, city sound identities, sound comfort, architectural sound prototypes which were meant to help designers consider sound in their projects. Nevertheless, taking care of the inherent sound dimensions in architectural urban projects remains an unresolved challenge. The researches of the last 30 years have shown how the sound environment qualities are forgotten in favour of visual qualities. This article presents a new method dedicated to generating simple sound sketches for architectural conception while preserving the complexity of acoustic simulation. This paper argues that the Esquis'sons! sound sketch tool reconfigures architectural design by considering an innovative view its the temporality, allowed by numeric designing tools able to intervene and offer a continuous feedback regarding sound environment.

summary This paper presents part of the research on the study of formal operations in Peter Eisenman's design process. The initial hypothesis is the possibility of translating the architect's design process and his formal tools, into a shape grammar, in selected works. In this sense, the research aims to simulate these formal tools through digital models, analyze the variations in the Diagram of Interiority and Exteriority phases; understand the design process using Rhinoceros software and its interaction with grasshopper, in search of the decoding and interpretation of a system of rules implicit in the architect's design process.

summary The purpose of this paper is to reach an optimal Islamic geometric pattern (IGP) shading screen design in terms of daylight and energy performance in an existing educational design studio (EDS) using generative design and simulation techniques. The study was carried out in a hot arid climate, in a typical EDS in 6th October University, located in Cairo, Egypt, and the study focused on the north-east oriented façade. Grasshopper for Rhino was utilized to generate the IGP parametric variations. Diva-For-Rhino which performs daylight analysis using Radiance / DAYSIM, and Design Builder which performs thermal load simulations using EnergyPlus were utilized in simulation. The results of the study achieved the required daylight levels with significant reduction of energy consumption levels of cooling load. This shows the affordance of the parametric IGP shading screens in façade treatment for achieving both efficient daylight and energy performance in educational design studio in hot arid climates.

summary The paper follows research in engaging groups of non-trained individuals in the creation of architectural designs using games and crowdsourcing for human-directed problem-solving. With the proposed method, architectural experts can encode their design knowledge into custom-developed multiplayer gameplay in Minecraft. Non-expert players then are constrained by this gameplay which guides them to create unique architectural results. We describe a method with three components: guiding rules, verification routines and fast feedback. The method employs a real-time link between the game and structural analysis in Grasshopper to verify the designs. To prove the viability of these results, we use robotic fabrication, where the digital results are brought to reality at scale. A major finding of the work is the suite of tools for calibrating the balance of influence on the resulting designs between the Experts and the Players. We believe that this process can create designs which are not limited to parametrically optimal solutions but could also solve real-world problems in new and unexpected ways.

summary Since the turn of the millennium, architects and designers have used greater access to Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) machines to explore links between design and fabrication. This trend is recently manifested in plug-ins for CAD software packages, which enable designers to program industrial robots and additive manufac- turing machines. However, amongst the array of contemporary tools, few connect CAD packages to commercial 5-axis routers and, as a re- sult, designers are forced to use complex CAM software to operate these machines with limited exploration of the interface with design. This paper reports on the development of a CAD plug-in for driving such routers and targeted at designers. It discusses key aspects in the conception of the software libraries for an alpha release of the tool, a plug-in for McNeel Grasshopper named Termite. Primary considera- tions for the development team include the areas and extent of flexi- bility offered in order to enable non-expert users of such machines to use them to in an effective and efficient manner. Key elements of the tools are discussed, including the definition of machining tools, the creation of generic toolpaths and the subsequent writing machine-code files. A set of example pieces are presented to demonstrate the pro- posed approach for flank-milling, patterning and connecting timber components at a furniture scale. These are compared to plug-ins for industrial robot with similar technical knowledge and experience amongst the target audience.

summary This paper investigates the efforts and benefits of the implementation of point clouds into architectural design processes and tools. Based on a study on the principal work processes of designers with point clouds the prototypical plugin/library - Volvox - was developed for the parametric modelling environment Grasshopper in Rhino. The prototype allows us to discuss the necessary technical layer for the task, benchmark the tool, and finally to evaluate the benefits, that this approach has for architectural practice, through a series of use cases.
