summary Throughout Latin America urban cable-cars are fast becoming a normal sight with urban transport systems, taking residents and tourists to and from previously isolated locations and providing a new form of accessibility that was not possible before. As its popularity grows, it is important to understand the role that improved spatial connectivity plays in transforming these communities and discuss how this can be best measured. This is because the spatial conditions of informal settlements are often forgotten about when planning large scale upgrading programs. Therefore, the aim of this article is to explore ways to interpret the role of spatial connectivity in the transformation process of informal settlements, through the case of Medellin's Urban Cable-car and the exploration of 'speed' as a measurable variable.

summary This paper reports our current research on automatic generation of houses layouts according to future inhabitant's requirements. For that generation we propose the use of a design method based on shape grammars that encodes light wood frame construction guidelines. Two different implementations for the design system are presently under development. One based on shape grammars supplemented with procedural knowledge and another using a genetic algorithm. Both implementations allow the generation of house layouts that fulfill both the user requirements and the design language.

title Sensory material architectures: Concepts and methodologies for spatial tectonics and tactile responsivity in knitted textile hybrid structures

summary As the knowledge of material computation advances, continuing the seamless integration of design and fabrication, questions beyond materialization can be addressed with a focus on sensing, feedback, and engagement as critical factors of design exploration. This article will discuss a series of prototypes, design methodologies, and technologies that articulate a textile’s micro-architecture, at the scale of fibers and stitches, to instrumentalize simultaneous structural, spatial, and sensory-responsive qualities. The progression of research displays an ever-deepening instrumentalization of fiber structure and its implications to form definition and responsivity, in creating form- and bending-active structures. The research results in a more refined definition of material behavior as the innate phenomena which emerge at the moment of textile fabrication. Ultimately, the architecture, in its materiality and physical, visual, and auditory responsivity, is designed to address specific challenges for children in filtering multiple sensory inputs, an underlying factor of autism spectrum disorder.

summary This paper describes an on-going research that unites two distinct and seemingly unrelated interests. One is Arabic calligraphy and the other is parametric architecture. The effort is to integrate these interests and, in doing so, balance cultural issues with technological ones, traditional with contemporary and spiritual with material. Moreover, this paper is inspired by Arabic calligraphy and its influence on Zaha Hadid’s designs; it is invigorated by parametric systems and their capacity as a source of architectural forms. This paper will observe the rising importance of computation technologies to architecture, which has always been a form of negotiation between ‘function and fiction’ and ‘force and form’. The paper proposes a Parametric Calligraphic Machine that simultaneously produces, connects and separates calligraphic surfaces, calligraphic images and calligraphic reality. Therefore, the goal is to examine this hypothesis in order to produce a set of techniques, tools and methods that inform the three-dimensional design process of Arabic calligraphy’s contemporary possibilities by addressing a process description rather than a state description of creating calligraphic images and calligraphic surfaces. The theoretical approach highlights issues pertaining to calligraphy, spatiality, translation, generative systems, parametric design, visual structure, force and form.

summary Parametric design is a computational-based approach used for understanding the logic and the language embedded in the design process algorithmically and mathematically. Currently, the main focus of computational models, such as shape grammar and space syntax, is primarily limited to formal and spatial requirements of the design problem. Yet, qualitative factors, such as social, cultural and contextual aspects, are also important dimensions in solving architectural design problems. In this paper, an overview of the advantages and implications of the current methods is presented. It also puts forward a ‘structured analytical system’ that combines the formal and geometric properties of the design, with descriptions that reflect the spatial, social and environmental patterns. This syntactic-discursive model is applied for encoding vernacular courtyard houses in the hot-arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa, and utilising the potentials of these cases in reflecting the lifestyle and the cultural values of the society, such as privacy, human-spatial behaviour, the social life inside the house, the hierarchy of spaces, the segregation and seclusion of family members from visitors and the orientation of spaces. The output of this analytical phase prepares the groundwork for the development of socio-spatial grammar for contemporary tall residential buildings that gives the designer the ability to reveal logical spatial topologies based on socio-environmental restrictions, and to produce alternatives that have an identity while also respecting the context, place and needs of users.

summary Building Performance simulation is escalating towards design optimization worldwide utilizing computational and advanced tools. Egypt has its plan and agenda to adopt new technologies to mitigate energy consumption through various sectors. Energy consumption includes electricity, crude oil, it encompasses renewable and non-renewable energy consumption. Egypt Electricity (EE) consumption by sector percentages is residential (47%), industrial (25%) and commercial (12%), with the remainder used by government, agriculture, public lighting and public utilities (4%). Electricity building consumption has many divisions includes HVAC systems, lighting, Computers and Electronics and others. Lighting share of electricity consumption can vary from 11 to 15 percent in mixed buildings as in our case study which definitely less that the amount used for HVAC loads. This research aims at utilizing shape morphogenesis on facades using geometric shape grammar to enhance daylighting while blocking longwave radiations causing heat stress. Mixed-use building operates in daytime more than night which emphasizes the objective of this study. Results evaluation is referenced to LEED v4.1 and ASHRAE 90.1-2016 window-to-wall ratio calibration and massive wall description. Geometric morphogenesis relies on three main parameters; Pattern (Geometry Shape Grammar: R1, R2, and R3), a reference surface to map from, and a target surface to map to which is the south-western façade of the case study. Enhancing Geo-morph rule is to guarantee flexibility due to the rotation of sun path annually with different azimuth and altitude angles and follow LEED V4.1 enhancements of opaque wall percent for building envelope.

All of these issues derive from Graham´s investigations of the main information and communication technologies (media) produced at that time, and which continue to offer reflections on current relationship between technical means and the subject – that is, his/her condition as audience, observer, spectator or user.

It also uses dialogue and game Vilém Flusser’s concepts to support this argument. summary A thin line lies between reality and fiction; what is mentally imagined and what is visualized. It all depends on how ideas and images are perceived or what neurological activity is triggered in the user’s brain. Architects and designers spare no effort or tools in presenting buildings, architecture or designs in all forms or ways that would augment users’ experience whether on the perceptual or the cognitive level and in both the digital or the physical environments. In a progressive tendency they, the designers, tend to rely more and more on digitizing their vision and mission, which subsequently give them, impressive and expressive superiority, that would influence the users conscious on the one hand and manipulate their subconscious on the other. Within that process designers work hard to break any mental firewall that would prevent their ideas from pervading the space of any mental environment the user, build or visualize. In that context, to what extent such ways of mental entertainments used by architects, legitimize deception in design? What distinguishes employing the rhythmic simulation of the narrative fictional inceptions (virtual reality) from deploying the adaptive stimulation of the experience modeling conceptions. The difference between planting an idea and constructing an idea. It is not the intention of the paper to prove the failure of the computer aided design neither to stand against the digital architectural design media and applications development. It is rather to present a different way of understanding of how architectural design whether virtual, digital, or real can stimulates and induces codes and messages that is correlated to the brainwave cognitive attributes and can generate a narrative brain environment where the brain can construct and simulate its own fictional design. Doing so, the paper will review certain experimental architectural events and activities which integrate sound and sight elements and effects within some electronic, technical and digital environments.

summary The methodology presented in this paper is grounded on the analysis and relational relocation of attributes of the urban body, deriving from the reconstruction of the urban body as a network configuration. In contrast to the hierarchical constructions, network constructions allow for multiple connections between elements, therefore being closer to the complexity of the associative forces found in the structure of the urban body.Similarity function is applied in an attempt to restructure those attributes of the urban body which emerge from the position of each element (node) in relation to other elements of the network and not from the Cartesian topology. Being able to represent material elements as nodes, counter-bodies deriving from autopoietic -network functions emerge, allowing for an inquiry in what concerns the autopoietic features of the urban body in general, focusing on the application of autopoietic functions which generate the urban body parts and components and on the multiplicity of elements' structure, in terms of association of crowds of elements and sets of attributes' values, aiming at the redefinition of proximity as similarity and of remoteness as difference.

summary Today, 98% of megaprojects face cost overruns or delays. The average cost increase is 80% and the average slippage is 20 months behind schedule (McKinsey 2015). It is becoming increasingly challenging to efficiently support the scale, complexity and ambition of these projects. Simultaneously, project data is being captured at growing rates. We continue to capture more data on a project than ever before. Total data captured back in 2009 in the construction industry reached over 51 petabytes, or 51 million gigabytes (Mckinsey 2016). It is becoming increasingly necessary to develop new ways to leverage our project data to better manage the complexity on our projects and allow the many stakeholders to make better more informed decisions. This paper focuses on utilizing advances in data mining, data analytics and data visualization as means to extract project information from massive datasets in a timely fashion to assist in making key informed decisions for project delivery. As part of this paper, we present an innovative new use of these technologies as applied to a large-scale infrastructural megaproject, to deliver a set of over 4,000 construction documents in a six-month period that has the potential to dramatically transform our industry and the way we deliver projects in the future. This paper describes a framework used to measure production performance as part of any project’s set of project controls for accelerated project delivery.

summary This paper describes the development of a workflow for the production of a net zero off-grid research cabin.  The workflow deploys a number of affiliated parametric software packages as a form finding tool for the exterior envelope of this structure, with a focus on passive solar design as a generative formal driver. The design was required to incorporate the spatial and programmatic needs of the users in a compact, barrier free, net zero building. Simultaneously, the research question asked the designers to harness the potential of digital design in the consideration of future fabrication techniques, in order to optimize the building’s performance and the speed and quality of assembly once the project moves into construction. Parameters considered include solar exposure, external surface area, cost, fabrication, functionality, and aesthetic criteria. This project was developed by a multidisciplinary team of graduate students at the University of Calgary.

summary This paper investigates the role of spatial parameters in relation to the economic dynamic embedded in the urban fabric. The key element explored in this study is the role of the urban configuration and accessibility on the success of different business sectors in Switzerland.The underlying hypothesis is that economic markets are constant forces of change influencing the development of cities and functions on all scales. Markets are institutions that reduce people's choices based on a myriad of factors to a single number, the price. Accessibility is a resource for each business that yields multiple values of benefits and transactions in terms of economic properties. This project explores the interaction of multiple measures of accessibility, calculated by Space Syntax analysis, with the success of different markets represented by employment by business sector. 828548 business locations and 44 spatial measures were used to derive associations between them. The results show that the measure of 'Choice' correlates highly for smaller radii and 'Integration' for larger radii with the total number of jobs. The result also shows each sector has a specific set of accessibility measures that allows them to thrive.

summary This paper expounds the teaching strategies used to introduce architecture students in the craft of design in the course Taller de Proyecto 1. These strategies are based on experiential mappings constructed from different digital resources allowing constantly confront design with real life, in order to maintain, throughout the process, a sensitive and precise relationship between reality and experience. It concludes that these methodologies strengthen the autonomy of students, developing a valuable reconnection with the way they look and transform the world, validating the premise that the act of design is an innate human act and not necessarily an erudite one.

summary The representational and visual aspects of architectural de- sign education cause certain pedagogical stresses in student’s capaci- ties to learn how to code, and this paper will serve as a critique of the current state of algorithmic pedagogy in architectural education. The paper will suggest that algorithmic curriculum should not frame code as ‘a design tool’, but as something to be designed in its own right; the writing of the code is the ‘design brief’ itself and not something addi- tional to an architectural design brief. The paper will argue for an ar- chitecture-less educational environment that focuses on computational competencies such as logic, loops and lists along with building a strong analytical basis for students’ understanding of programming and digital geometries.

summary Urban planning projects usually comprise a complex set of objectives that needs to be addressed by developing a number of proposals. This requires a lot of repetitive steps resulting in fewer and slowly-developed design alternatives. To address the limitations of the existing system, this research introduces the merge of associative parametric design tools with the conceptual design phase of urban planning process to propose a Parameterized Conceptual Design Phase. The developed Associative Algorithm within the proposed phase represents a computational approach that translates a site’s settings into local attractors to define urban fabric, and provide the designer with variations for optimal solutions. The Informal Settlement of Ezbet El Matar, Alexandria, is selected as the case study of this approach.

summary This paper investigates an agency of materials through a design methodology that follows Martin Heidegger’s process of “Entbergen” or “unconcealing” as a non-instrumentalist understanding of tools and materials. This investigation takes place through the de- sign of a children’s theatre in South Africa where material innovation for architectural components is needed. The research studies vernacu- lar African patterns and their inherent behaviour when transferred to materials. The transference of pattern systems to architectural proto- types is discussed alongside the discussion of their technical and ar- chitectural performance criteria. Following Heidegger’s theory of “Entbergen” (“unconcealing”) the paper will demonstrate how making in this methodology becomes an “unconcealing”, which includes both digital and analogue means, linking the four causalities - causa mate- rialis, causa formalis, causa finalis, and causa efficiens – through the agency of material within an integrated process between all four caus- es. Making becomes a process in which form is generated through in- terventions within fields of forces and currents of materials, taking cause and agency into account, and standing in opposition to methods that are defined by a premeditated notion of an ideal outcome.

summary Every city has under utilized spaces that create a series of serious negative effects. Waiting for major interventions, those spaces can be reactivated and revitalized with soft temporary projects: micro interventions that light up the attention, give new meaning and add a new reading to abandoned spaces. We can call this kind of operations "plug-in design", inheriting the term from computer architecture: interventions which aim to involve the citizens and activate the environment, engage multiple catalyst processes and civil actions. Plug-in design interventions are by all meanings experimental, they seek for interaction with the users, locally and globally. Information Technology - with its parametric and site-specific capabilities and interactive features - can be instrumental to create such designs and generate a new consciousness of the existing environment. With this paper we will illustrate how two low-budget interventions have re-activated a forgotten public space. Parametric design with a specific script allowing site-specific design, materials and structure optimization and a series of interactive features, will be presented through Reciprocal 1.0 and Reciprocal 2.0 projects which have been built in 2016 in Italy by the nITro group.
