summary This paper describes the development of a sentient canopy that interacts with human visitors by using its own internal motivation. Modular curiosity-based machine learning behaviour is supported by a highly distributed system of microprocessor hardware integrated within interlinked cellular arrays of sound, light, kinetic actuators and proprioreceptive sensors in a resilient physical scaffolding system. The curiosity-based system involves exploration by employing an expert system composed of archives of information from preceding behaviours, calculating potential behaviours together with locations and applications, executing behaviour and comparing result to prediction. Prototype architectural structures entitled Sentient Canopy and Sentient Chamber developed during 2015 and 2016 were developed to support this interactive behaviour, integrating new communications protocols and firmware, and a hybrid proprioreceptive system that configured new electronics with sound, light, and motion sensing capable of internal machine sensing and externally- oriented sensing for human interaction. Proprioreception was implemented by producing custom electronics serving photoresistors, pitch-sensing microphones, and accelerometers for motion and position, coupled to sound, light and motion-based actuators and additional infrared sensors designed for sensing of human gestures. This configuration provided the machine system with the ability to calculate and detect real-time behaviour and to compare this to models of behaviour predicted within scripted routines. Testbeds located at the Living Architecture Systems Group/Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (LASG/PBAI, Waterloo/Toronto), Centre for Information Technology (CITA, Copenhagen) National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in Washington DC are illustrated.

summary Building design entails an intuitive and informative exploration of an architect involving iterative refinement of design ideas till client objectives, and priorities are satisfied. Similarly, service cores in a building are designed through the exploration of multifarious design options each with different performative metrics regarding accessibility, efficiency, cost, feasibility, etc. As the current process is labor-intensive, manual & dependent on the expertise of the architect, the search space leading to the selection of an optimal design alternative is very limited. This paper describes Service Core Generator (SCG) library in Autodesk Dynamo enabling automated generation of service core models for varied building shell geometry types (limited to orthogonal profiles). The tool described encodes explicit and implicit domain knowledge into the system facilitating service core models for buildings across varied scale with use type's including offices, hotels or residential buildings.

summary Healthcare design projects require the careful integration of spatial and structural requirements. Today, design teams typically resolve these requirements in two separate, largely sequential steps. In the first step, architects leverage their experience and vision to develop space plans that address program and goals. Next, based on the architect's recommended design, engineers generate and refine a structural design to address structural requirements. This manual process produces a very limited number of non optimal spatial and structural design solutions with unclear decision rationale. This paper presents the Integrated Spatial-Structural Optimization (ISSO) decision making methodology. ISSO supports design teams by helping them generate, analyze, and manage a vast number of integrated spatial and structural solutions. ISSO features a bi-level optimization workflow that has been customized for spatial and structural design of healthcare facilities. The paper describes implementation in the Dynamo parametric modeling platform, and retrospective validation of the algorithm and workflow on an industry case study to demonstrate how ISSO can help design teams generate, analyze, and manage more conceptual design options.

summary Design exploration in architectural space planning is often constrained by tight deadlines and a need to apply necessary expertise at the right time. We hypothesize that a system that can computationally generate vast numbers of design options, respect project constraints, and analyze for client goals, can assist the design team and client to make better decisions. This paper explains a research venture built from insights into space planning from senior planners, architects, and experts in the field, coupled with algorithms for evolutionary systems and computational geometry, to develop an automated computational framework that enables rapid generation and analysis of space plan layouts. The system described below automatically generates hundreds of design options from inputs typically provided by an architect, including a site outline and program document with desired spaces, areas, quantities, and adjacencies to be satisfied. We envision that this workflow can clarify project goals early in the design process, save time, enable better resource allocation, and assist key stakeholders to make informed decisions and deliver better designs. Further, the system is tested on a case study healthcare design project with set goals and objectives.

summary Virtual Reality (VR) software has developed to the point where, for the architect who is averagely technically adept, it can be incorporated into the design process with reasonable effort and costs. For VR to be an effective design tool, it must add value to the design process and should give insights and opportunities not available by other methods.Previous research by the authors reported on the results of an international student workshop which focused both on the workflow (to prepare the architectural models for the new VR systems) and the spatial perception that users experienced. In this paper, we continue to explore the question: "Can low cost VR be an effective addition to the architects' design toolbox, or does it still remain a "far-fetched, high-tech expensive folly?"To do this we are working with a larger group of students, a more developed workflow and we are also expanding this to architects in practice. We will be assessing both the practicality of integrating VR into the design workflow and the spatial perception of the designer when interacting with the model. We are experimenting with additional interface tools.

summary The paper addresses the issue of spatial mismatch of jobs and the accessibility to job locations based on different age, income and industry group. Taking Atlanta as a case study, we developed a geospatial analysis tool enabling developers, the city planning bureau and the residents to identify potential sites of redevelopment with better economic development opportunities. It also aids to find potential location to live with respect to user’s choices for transit options, walkability, job location and proximity to chosen land use. We built our model on a block level in the city, imparting them a score, visualizing the data as a heat map. The metrics to compute the score included proximity to job, proximity to worker’s residence, transit availability, walkability and number of landmark elements near the site. We worked with Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) Data along with residence area characteristics (RAC) and work place area characteristic (WAC) data sets, where the total number of data-points was over 3 million. It was challenging for us to optimize computation such that the prototype performs statistical analysis and updates visualization in real time. The research further is prototyped as a web application leveraging Leaflet’s Open Street Maps API and D3 visualization plugin. The research showed that there is a high degree of spatial mismatch between home and job locations with very few jobs with driving distance within 5 -10 miles with limited transit options in Atlanta. Further, it showed that low-earning workers need to travel significantly larger distance for work compared to higher class.

summary The Egyptian government resorts to prototype housing for low-income citizens to meet the growing demand of the housing market. The problem with the prototype is that it does not meet specific needs. Consequently, users make modifications to the prototype without professional intervention because of the high cost. This paper discusses an automatic multi-stories space planning tool that helps low-income citizens to modify their prototype housing provided by the government. Social, spatial and functional design aspects were set in the original design prototype by an architect. The proposed tool simulates spaces spatial locations in the original design by simulating the analogy of mechanical springs through an interactive simulation of a parametric model. The authors developed the used algorithm in the generative design tool Grasshopper and the live physics engine Kangaroo, both working within the Rhino 3D environment. The algorithm has two versions, one-floor level version and two floors version targeting the wealthier users. Results indicate that this tool integrates with the exploratory nature of the design process even for non-professional users. The authors designed a tool that will help the users to study the effect of the desired modifications against the originally provided prototype, it also makes it easier for users to express their requirements to a professional designer, conserving time and financial cost.

summary The knowledge of when the amorphous masses of cells organize themselves into a first structural level is relevant for the architect. The architecture must also attend structural and economic stresses, following efficiency, as living beings do: something that we can learn from nature ("biolearning"), although that level can only be reached with microscope. So this becomes a useful tool for architectural research. Examples of this are presented here, seeking first to discover, analyze and evaluate microscopic structures of plants and animals. summary Montevideo has a new visitor. In the heritage building of the german architect Karl Trambauer, located in the Old City, a new presence was installed filling the vacuum left by its former collapsed dome, seeking to restore a message, adding a new vision and recovering the lost dialogue between the architecture, the city and its inhabitants. This paper summarizes and explains the experience of the workshop Adaptation 2015, held on September 2015 at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Exposing the theoretical framework, design strategies, morphogenetic development, digital manufacturing experimentations, conclusions and open questions from the experience made. We will go through this temporary intervention on Trambauer’s building, being a rare but symbiotic object, with parametric genes, digital and handcrafted manufacture, and also looking for the impact of theory and academic practices in the city.

summary Ruin has a bad name. Despite the obvious complications, failure provides a rich opportunity—how better to understand a building’s physicality than to watch it collapse? This paper offers a novel method to exploit failure through physical simulation and iterative machine learning. Using technology traditionally relegated to special effects, we can now understand collapse on a granular level: since modern-day physics engines track object-object collisions, they enable a close reading of the spatial preferences that underpin ruin. In the case of bricks, that preference is relatively simple—to fall. By idealizing bricks as rigid bodies, one can understand the effects of gravitational force on each individual brick in a masonry structure. These structures are sometimes able to ‘settle,’ resulting in a stable equilibrium state; in many cases, it means that they will simply collapse. Analyzing ruin in this way is informative, to be sure, but it proves most useful when applied in series. The evolutionary solver described in this paper closely monitors the performance of constituent bricks and ensures that the most successful structures are emulated by later generations. The tool consists of two parts: a user interface for design and the solver itself. Once the architect produces a potential design, the solver performs an evolutionary optimization; after a few hundred iterations, the end result is a structurally sound version of the unstable original. It is hoped that this hybrid of top-down and bottom-up design strategies offers an architecture that is ultimately strengthened by its contingencies.

summary Reviewing the current research trends in robotic fabrication around the world, the trajectory promises new opportunities for innovation in Architecture and the possible redefinition of the role of the Architect in the industry itself. New entrepreneurial, innovative start-ups are popping up everywhere challenging the traditional model of the architect. However, it also poses new questions and challenges in the education of the architect today. What are the appropriate pedagogical methods to instill enthusiasm for new technologies, materials, and craft? How do we avoid the pure application of pre-set tools, such as the use of the laser cutter has become, which in many schools around the world has caused problems rather than solving problems? How do we teach students to invent their tools especially in a society that doesn't have a strong background in the making? The primary focus of this paper is on how architectural CAAD/ CAM education through the use of robotic fabrication can enhance student's understanding, passion and knowledge of materiality, technology, and craftsmanship. The paper is based on the pedagogical set-up and method of an M. Arch I studio that was taught by the author in fall 2016 with the focus on robotic fabrication, materiality, traditional timber construction systems, tool design and digital and physical craftsmanship.

summary Through the lens of participatory mass housing the paper explores the conference theme of simplicity and complexity. A suitable home is a deep rooted desire in the heart of people, and everyone has their own vision of what is a suitable home. Yet the multi-faceted social needs of housing and how they are being designed and developed in mass housing buildings appear too complex and appear too costly that the process would involve direct user participations. The authors have developed a Computer Aided Participatory Housing Design System (CAPHDS) to allow end users (future occupants) become active stakeholders in the design process with the aid of computational design instruments. These tools allow end users to actively engage in the process. The paper describes how a mass housing design process can be broken down into a set of simple tasks that encourage the active engagement and joint development of end users and architects with the proposed design.

summary Since the time architecture and construction began embracing robotics, the pre-fab movement has grown rapidly. As the possibilities for new design and fabrication emerge from creativity and need, the application and use of new robotic technologies becomes vital. This movement has been largely focused on the deployment of industrial-type robots used in the (automobile) manufacturing industry for decades, as well as trying to apply these technologies into off-site building construction. Beyond the pre-fab (off-site) conditions, on-site fabrication offers a valuable next step to implement new construction methods and reduce human work-related injuries. The main challenge in introducing on-site robotic fabrication/construction is the difficulty in calibrating robot navigation (localization) in an unstructured and constantly changing environment. Additionally, advances in robotic technology, similar to the revolution of at-home 3D printing, shift the ownership of modes of production from large industrial entities to individuals, allowing for greater levels of design and construction customization. This paper demonstrates a low-cost humanoid robot as highly customizable technology for floor tiling. A novel end-effector design to pick up tiles was developed, along with a localization system that can be applied to a wide variety of robots.

summary The use of adjacency graphs to represent and generate architectural arrangements tends to favor direct connections between contiguous rooms. These disregard specialized circulatory systems (such as corridors), which consider connections between non-contiguous spatial units or accesses. This paper addresses two specific issues: (1) how to represent a circulation network for a specific access/adjacency graph embedding; and (2) how to design good circulatory solutions for the arrangement that optimizes this network. To represent a complete circulation network, we propose a scheme, an adapted straight skeleton, based on the boundaries of the spatial units. To design possible circulation alternatives, we adopt the Slime Mold model (Tero et al., 2006; 2007). Using this model, we develop an original method, termed Adjacency Graph Selection (AGS), to generate circulation solutions for arrangements. As an initial test case for AGS, we use floor plan of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel.

summary This paper describes the process of designing a prototype for a soft responsive system for a kinetic building facade. The prototype uses lightweight materials and mechanisms to generate a building facade skin that is both soft (less dependent on hard mechanical systems) and responsive (dynamically and simultaneously adapting to spatial and environmental conditions). By combining concepts stemming from both tensegrity structures and folding mechanisms, we develop a prototype that changes dynamically to produce varying facade patterns and perforations based on sensor-network data and feedback. We use radiation sensors and shape memory alloys to control the prototype mechanism and allow for the required parametric adaptation. Based on the data from the radiation sensors, the lengths of the shape memory alloys are altered using electric wires and are parametrically linked to the input data. The transformation in the resulting overall surface is directly linked to the desired levels of daylighting and solar exposure. We conclude with directions for future research, including full scale testing, advanced simulation, and multi-objective optimization.

summary Physical Models as an architectural design tool, had major effect on architecture learning process. In structural form finding, it helped in improving visual design thinking to track form creation processes during form finding design stage. The aim is to study the impact of using physical models for second year architecture students in design studios learning. By analyzing and comparing students’ performance and progress; to clarify the effect of using physical models as a tool for designing progression, followed by analytical study on the students' structural models, in order to investigate the influence of models on their design educational progress. Research achieved that there were three basic phases the students pass through during form finding process when used manual physical models that improve the students' design capability.
