summary Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people started to rely more on their communities and attach great importance to the accessibility of public facilities at a hyperlocal level. The 15-Minute City concept, first put forth by Carlos Moreno in 2016, gradually gained popularity worldwide during the age of pandemics. This human-centric concept aims to build complete neighbourhoods that meet the daily needs of residents within 15 minutes by using non-motorized transport. However, few studies focus on vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly for the assessment of 15-Minute City. Therefore, this paper provides an assessment framework for spatial accessibility to public facilities for vulnerable people from the perspective of 15-Minute City. It is measured in three aspects: spatial distribution characteristics, service population ratio and number of facilities through the comparison between Sham Shui Po and Tin Shui Wai in Hong Kong. The result shows that the accessibility to public facilities needed in daily life for children in Sham Shui Po and Tin Shui Wai is relatively reasonable, while the accessibility for the elderly needs to be improved. The research can provide references for evaluating and optimizing spatial planning to promote health and well-being in Hong Kong and other cities.

summary The abundance of vertical surfaces in urban environments and their use for green installations have been of great interest in the architectural community. This paper discusses how vertical gardens and urban farming can be spurred on and enabled by two emerging fields of investigation: Material Science and the Internet of Things (IoT). This paper discusses how two emerging strategies, smart materials and novel sensing and actuation systems linked to the IoT, can facilitate the creation of a stable environment or zone along architectural facades for the creation of new ecosystems. Furthermore, this paper will contemplate future trajectories for the integration of living matter into buildings and propose an open source database that will facilitate the exchange of collected data and knowledge to spur on further developments.

summary Cities are continuously produced through entropic processes that mediate between complex networked systems and the immediacy urban life. Emergent media technologies inform new relationships between information and matter, code and space to redefine new urban ecosystems. Modes of perceiving, experiencing and inhabiting cities are radically changing along with a radical transformation of the tools that we use to design. Cities as complex and systemic organisms require approaches that engage new multi-scalar strategies to connect the physical layer with the system of networked ecologies. This paper aims at investigating emerging and novel forms of reading and producing urban spaces reimagining the physical city through intelligent and mediated processes. Through data agency and responsive urban processes, the design methodology explored the materialization of a temporary pneumatic structure and membrane that tested material performance through fabrication and sensing practices through the pneuSENSE project developed in July 2016 in New York at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the 'HyperCities' IaaC- Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia - Global Summer School.

summary The topic "Crowdthinking" reveals the inquiries of researchers about collaborative work, distributed intelligence and collective research. The call focuses on transdisciplinary thinking as a construct based on multiplicity and diversity. All these topics are essential not only in the field of design and architecture, but also in emerging areas of human sciences and arts . Currently, the collaborative design is considered one of the key bases for change in the city and society. In its genesis, it manifests the notion that the world around us is inadequate for many of the needs of the society and from that design can be collectively improved. Such collective research, by combining distributed intelligence, sustainable social development, design cutting edge research, theories and computational strategies, generates a research partnership based on participation and distributed cognition of complex problems. This call proposes an approach in which the results of the experiences can build a model, define or apply axioms and lead to applications. It also looks for emerging conjectures about the process, the creation of computer models and the behaviour of the resulting designs. On the other hand, the need to find solutions that improve the quality of life for the community and sustainable development includes concerns about the integration of the physical and cultural context of cities, mass education and the inclusion of parametric design, digital manufacturing and digital prototyping, and BIM as a system that organizes and ensures the correspondence between the physical urban design and sustainable archetypes. These are some of the concerns in which technology has been contributing to improve the design process by integrating information. This integration optimizes resources and enables the various project professionals to work on the same model, run simulations, improve materializations and evaluate massive amount of data. Projects with greater social and environmental responsibility can be achieved adopting into the teaching and practice this new way of design that anticipates an extensive exchange that wilt foster self-evaluation and reformulation of educational paradigms.

title What makes a city ‘smart’?

summary Taking advantage of information and communications technology tools and techniques for city administration, whether it is for urban planning activities, for transport solutions or many other purposes, is not a new concept. However, in order for a city to be classified as ‘smart’, a synthesis of intelligence that transcends mere utilisation is essential. This article analyses the increasing use of information and communications technology and sensing technologies in cities by examining this new way of city governing from a critical perspective. Existing projects and initiatives were investigated to find out how, and to what extent, these tools are being employed by cities. The advantages and the current shortcomings of smart city are also discussed in order to understand the viability of using these tools.

summary This paper presents a methodology to collect and visualize social media data about art, in order to map art locations in cities using geo-localized data, and comparing planning decisions with the actual use of spaces. As various social networks have penetrated into the daily life of people, these become one important and effective data source to understand how people perform 'arts' around the city [Shah, 2015]. The case study for this methodology is Singapore, a vibrant city where art and culture are being promoted in the light of an emerging creative economy. The Singapore government promotes art and creates 'art clusters', such as art districts, galleries, fairs and museums in the city. Additionally, artists, creative entrepreneurs, consumers, and critics seek and explore alternative spaces. Understanding where art and creativity are discussed, broadcasted and consumed in Singapore is a key point to have better insights into art space planning, and study its effects on the city.The paper will try to answer the following research question:Is it possible to discover, through social network data, spaces where art is produced, discussed, and broadcasted to an audience in Singapore? summary This article analyses some of the proposals produced in the late 1970´s by the American contemporary artist Dan Graham, in which he uses technical means to investigate the audience´s perception and behavior. The questions raised highlight reciprocity phenomena and identity constructions – factors that affect our experience and behavior in contemporary cities daily life. All of these issues derive from Graham´s investigations of the main information and communication technologies (media) produced at that time, and which continue to offer reflections on current relationship between technical means and the subject – that is, his/her condition as audience, observer, spectator or user.

summary The increasing population size of cities makes the urban fabric ever more complex and more disintegrated into smaller areas, called neighbourhoods. This project applies methods from geoscience and software engineering to the process of identification of those neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods, by nature, are defined by connec- tivity, centrality and similarity. Transport and geospatial datasets are used to detect the characteristics of places. An unsupervised learning algorithm is then applied to sort places according to their characteris- tics and detect areas with similar make up: the neighbourhood. The at- tributes can be static like land use or space syntax attributes as well as dynamic like transportation patterns over the course of a day. An un- supervised learning algorithm called Self Organizing Map is applied to project this high dimensional space constituting of places and their attributes to a two dimensional space where proximity is similarity and patterns can be detected – the neighbourhoods. To summarize, the proposed approach yields interesting insights into the structure of the urban fabric generated by human movement, interactions and the built environment. The approach represents a quantitative approach to ur- ban analysis. It reveals that the city is not a polychotomy of neigh- bourhoods but that neighbourhoods overlap and don’t have a sharp edge.

summary This paper investigates the role of spatial parameters in relation to the economic dynamic embedded in the urban fabric. The key element explored in this study is the role of the urban configuration and accessibility on the success of different business sectors in Switzerland.The underlying hypothesis is that economic markets are constant forces of change influencing the development of cities and functions on all scales. Markets are institutions that reduce people's choices based on a myriad of factors to a single number, the price. Accessibility is a resource for each business that yields multiple values of benefits and transactions in terms of economic properties. This project explores the interaction of multiple measures of accessibility, calculated by Space Syntax analysis, with the success of different markets represented by employment by business sector. 828548 business locations and 44 spatial measures were used to derive associations between them. The results show that the measure of 'Choice' correlates highly for smaller radii and 'Integration' for larger radii with the total number of jobs. The result also shows each sector has a specific set of accessibility measures that allows them to thrive.

summary In this study, a visualization tool that maps outdoor physical activity such as runs on a map by specifying time, location, activity, gender, age group, etc. is created. This tool reveals the usage patterns of streets within a city for outdoor physical activity. This tool is created within a larger research project that investigates the influence of streets on the leisure walking activity within cities. For this purpose, the tool is capable of presenting the collected multi-modal data that includes personal fitness data, weather data, spatial data, and crime data. Moreover, the tool creates new analysis capabilities such as displaying usage of streets by urban joggers. The research project in which this tool will be used is aimed for designers/planners to improve streets for 'runnability'.

summary This project explores the advantages of employing continuum material topology optimization in a 3D non-standard lattice structure through fiber additive manufacturing processes (Figure 1). Additive manufacturing (AM) has gained rapid adoption in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). However, existing optimization techniques often overlook the mechanical anisotropy of AM processes, resulting in suboptimal structural properties, with a focus on layer-by-layer or planar processes. Materials, processes, and techniques considering anisotropy behavior (Kwon et al. 2018) could enhance structural performance (Xie 2022). Research on 3D printing materials with high anisotropy is limited (Eichenhofer et al. 2017), but it holds potential benefits (Liu et al. 2018). Spatial lattices, such as space frames, maximize structural efficiency by enhancing flexural rigidity and load-bearing capacity using minimal material (Woods et al. 2016). From a structural design perspective, specific non-standard lattice geometries offer great potential for reducing material usage, leading to lightweight load-bearing structures (Shelton 2017). The flexibility and freedom of shape inherent to AM offers the possibility to create aggregated continuous truss-like elements with custom topologies.

summary High tech industries are playing an important role in the economic development in the United States. While some cities are shrinking, the "innovation" cities are growing. The attributes that cause some cities to successfully become innovative is a very relevant 21st century topic and will be investigated here.Previous work conduct city analysis through conventional government GIS or census data but such analyses do not answer questions about the perception of citizens inhabiting the city, and the activities they conduct. The novelty of this current project is to make use of large-scale bottom-up data available from social media. Several social media sources-CrunchBase, Twitter, Yelp, and Flickr- were data mined pertaining to four innovation districts in Boston. We found that the success of innovation districts in Boston were correlated with several important variables: the most successful districts tended to occur near research institutions, in very "mixed use" areas, and were unexpectedly not correlated with land and labor prices, unlike technology districts in the past. Based on our study, we make recommendations for the urban design that cities should put in place to increase the potential for "innovation".

summary This paper describes the design process behind Caress of the Gaze, a project that represents a new approach to the design of a gaze-actuated, 3D printed body architecture—as a form of proto-architectural study—providing a framework for an interactive dynamic design. The design process engages with three main issues. Firstly, it aims to look at form or geometry as a means of controlling material behavior by exploring the tectonic properties of multi-material 3D printing technologies. Secondly, it addresses novel actuation systems by using Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) in order to achieve life-like behavior. Thirdly, it explores the possibility of engaging with interactive systems by investigating how our clothing could interact with other people as a primary interface, using vision-based eye-gaze tracking technologies. In so doing, this paper describes a radically alternative approach not only to the production of garments but also to the ways we interact with the world around us. Therefore, the paper addresses the emerging field of shape-changing 3D printed structures and interactive systems that bridge the worlds of robotics, architecture, technology, and design.

summary The aim of this paper is to present the partial results of the project "La ciudad inteligente; un palimpsesto digital", which is currently being developed. The project focuses into the emerging paradigm of Smart cities from a regional perspective, transcending the timeless notion of urban-rural dichotomy, to focus on the territory as an integral cultural landscape. Reflection, but also experimentation on specific social-based technological applications applied to territory studies, constitute an essential tool in building the reality of a smart city. From the design and implementation of a strategic action plan designed to be completed in four years, this paper shows objectives, theoretical basis, used tools and partial results of the experiment carried out in the Paisaje Industrial Fray Bentos, recently declared "World Heritage" by UNESCO.

summary With the work-in-progress research project ColorTracker we explore color as a formal design tool. This project-based paper describes a novel software application that processes color composition of a place and transcribes the data into three-dimensional geometries for architectural design. The research comprises two parallel trajectories: a theoretical survey and the software application design. The theoretical survey presents the historical background of color. The project-based research seeks to develop digital methods and techniques that analyze the color compositions of the environment. Subsequently the objective is a novel application software for smart mobile devices in order to demonstrate the potentials of examining the color composition and chromatic parameters of a given environment and how it can contribute to the design.

summary Over the last 5 years, large-scale ‘data dumps’ of architectural production have been made available online through project-specific websites (mainly competitions) and architectural aggregation/dissemination sites like Architizer, Suckerpunch, and Archinect. This reinforces the broader context of Ubiquitous Simultaneity, in which large amounts of data are continuously updated and easily accessed through a dizzying array of mobile devices. This condition is being exploited by sports leagues and financial speculators through the development of tools that collect, visualize, and analyze historical data for the purpose of producing speculative predictive simulations that could lead to strategies for enhanced performance. We explore the development of a workflow for deploying computer vision, SIFT algorithms, image aggregation, and heteromorphic deformation as a design strategy. These techniques have all been developed separately for various applications and here we combine them in such a way as to allow for the embedding of the historical and speculative artifacts of architectural production into newly formed three-dimensional architectural bodies. This work builds on past research, which resulted in a more two-dimensional image-based mapping and translation process found in existing imaging protocols for projects like Google Earth, and transitions towards the production of data-rich formal assemblies. Outliers and concentrations of visual data are exploited as a means to encourage innovation within the production of architecture.

summary This paper presents a computational approach to provide dynamic assessment and optimization of principles derived from Transit Oriented Development (TOD) - an urban development model that advocates compact, walkable, and mixed-use neighborhoods, centered around transport stations. In spite of being increasingly promoted in several cities of the world, TOD lacks an approach that addresses multivariate data for optimization of its principles. In this paper, we propose a methodology backed by an algorithmic-parametric CAD environment, applied to a neighborhood unit in a case study. The objective is the analysis and improvement of TOD relevant and measurable features (transit accessibility, walkability and diversity) in order to optimize neighborhoods' features. The ultimate goal is to facilitate the management of solutions in TOD planning processes, supported by a principle-index-tool approach triad.

summary This paper presents the progress of a pilot classroom, which uses mobile devices to enhance instructor-student classroom interac- tions and students’ learning of the History of Art and Architecture. The main objective of this research was to find a way of improving classroom activities, for the coming year, by making the best possible use of technology to enable students to learn more successfully and improve their understanding of the lesson content. In this paper, class- room activities during 2014 and 2015 are analysed using the SAMR Model coupled with Bloom’s revised taxonomy and the EdTech Quin- tet Model. In addition, a plan for the redesign and improvement of ac- tivities in 2016 is proposed, the effectiveness of the SAMR model at improving in class activities is discussed and a perspective on how to develop the classroom using the “SAMR ladder” is included. The re- sults show that in 2015, 25% of the students in the class achieved an A grade, and less than 5% were graded F compared to 26% in 2012.

summary Finding an attractive or best-fit neighborhood for a new resident of any city is not only important from the perspective of the resident him or herself, but has larger implications for developers and city planners. The environment or mood of the right neighborhood is not simply created through traditional characteristics such as income, crime, or zoning regulations - more ephemeral traits related to user-perception also have significant weight. Using datasets and tools previously unassociated with real-estate decision-making and neighborhood planning, such as social media and machine learning, we create a non-deterministic and customized way of discovering and understanding neighborhoods. Our project creates a customizable ranking system for the 195 neighborhoods in New York City that helps users find the one that best matches their preferences. Our team has developed a composite weighted score with urban spatial data and social media data to rank all NYC neighborhoods based on a series of questions asked to the user. The project's contribution is to provide a scientific and calibrated understanding of the impact that socially oriented activities and preferences have towards the uses of space.
