summary Traditionally, architects express their thoughts on the design of 3D architectural forms via perspective renderings and standardized 2D drawings. However, as architectural design is always multidimensional and intricate, it is difficult to make others understand the design intention, concrete form, and even spatial layout through simple language descriptions. Benefiting from the fast development of machine learning, especially natural language processing and convolutional neural networks, this paper proposes a Linguistics-based Architectural Form Generative Model (LAFGM) that could be trained to make 3D architectural form predictions based simply on language input. Several related works exist that focus on learning text-to-image generation, while others have taken a further step by generating simple shapes from the descriptions. However, the text parsing and output of these works still remain either at the 2D stage or confined to a single geometry. On the basis of these works, this paper used both Stanford Scene Graph Parser (Sebastian et al. 2015) and graph convolutional networks (Kipf and Welling 2016) to compile the analytic semantic structure for the input texts, then generated the 3D architectural form expressed by the language descriptions, which is also aided by several optimization algorithms. To a certain extent, the training results approached the 3D form intended in the textual description, not only indicating the tremendous potential of LAFGM from linguistic input to 3D architectural form, but also innovating design expression and communication regarding 3D spatial information.

title Design Considerations Due to Scale Effects in 3D Concrete Printing

summary The effect of scale on different parameters of the 3D printing of concrete is explored through the design and fabrication of a 3D concrete printed pavilion. This study shows a significant gap exists between what can be generated through computer aided design (CAD) and subsequent computer aided manufacturing (generally based on CNC technology). In reality, the 3D concrete printing on the one hand poses manufacturing constraints (e.g. minimum curvature radii) due to material behaviour that is not included in current CAD/CAM software. On the other hand, the process also takes advantage of material behaviour and thus allows the creation of shapes and geometries that, too, can’t be modelled and predicted by CAD/CAM software. Particularly in the 3D printing of concrete, there is not a 1:1 relation between toolpath and printed product, as is the case with CNC milling. Material deposition is dependent on system pressure, robot speed, nozzle section, layer stacking, curvature and more – all of which are scale dependent. This paper will discuss the design and manufacturing decisions based on the effects of scale on the structural design, printed and layered geometry, robot kinematics, material behaviour, assembly joints and logistical problems. Finally, by analysing a case study pavilion, it will be explore how 3D concrete printing structures can be extended and multiplied across scales and functional domains ranging from structural to architectural elements, so that we can understand how to address questions of scale in their design.

summary This paper describes an on-going research that unites two distinct and seemingly unrelated interests. One is Arabic calligraphy and the other is parametric architecture. The effort is to integrate these interests and, in doing so, balance cultural issues with technological ones, traditional with contemporary and spiritual with material. Moreover, this paper is inspired by Arabic calligraphy and its influence on Zaha Hadid’s designs; it is invigorated by parametric systems and their capacity as a source of architectural forms. This paper will observe the rising importance of computation technologies to architecture, which has always been a form of negotiation between ‘function and fiction’ and ‘force and form’. The paper proposes a Parametric Calligraphic Machine that simultaneously produces, connects and separates calligraphic surfaces, calligraphic images and calligraphic reality. Therefore, the goal is to examine this hypothesis in order to produce a set of techniques, tools and methods that inform the three-dimensional design process of Arabic calligraphy’s contemporary possibilities by addressing a process description rather than a state description of creating calligraphic images and calligraphic surfaces. The theoretical approach highlights issues pertaining to calligraphy, spatiality, translation, generative systems, parametric design, visual structure, force and form.

summary A thin line lies between reality and fiction; what is mentally imagined and what is visualized. It all depends on how ideas and images are perceived or what neurological activity is triggered in the user’s brain. Architects and designers spare no effort or tools in presenting buildings, architecture or designs in all forms or ways that would augment users’ experience whether on the perceptual or the cognitive level and in both the digital or the physical environments. In a progressive tendency they, the designers, tend to rely more and more on digitizing their vision and mission, which subsequently give them, impressive and expressive superiority, that would influence the users conscious on the one hand and manipulate their subconscious on the other. Within that process designers work hard to break any mental firewall that would prevent their ideas from pervading the space of any mental environment the user, build or visualize. In that context, to what extent such ways of mental entertainments used by architects, legitimize deception in design? What distinguishes employing the rhythmic simulation of the narrative fictional inceptions (virtual reality) from deploying the adaptive stimulation of the experience modeling conceptions. The difference between planting an idea and constructing an idea. It is not the intention of the paper to prove the failure of the computer aided design neither to stand against the digital architectural design media and applications development. It is rather to present a different way of understanding of how architectural design whether virtual, digital, or real can stimulates and induces codes and messages that is correlated to the brainwave cognitive attributes and can generate a narrative brain environment where the brain can construct and simulate its own fictional design. Doing so, the paper will review certain experimental architectural events and activities which integrate sound and sight elements and effects within some electronic, technical and digital environments.

summary Complex forms and structures have always been highly valued in architecture, even much before the development of computers. Many architects and engineers have strived to develop structures that look very complex but at the same time are relatively simple to understand, calculate and build. A good example of this approach is the Beijing National Aquatics Centre design for the 2008 Olympic Games, also known as the Water Cube. This paper presents a proposal for a structural variance-producing engine using cellular automata (CA) techniques to produce complex structures based on Weaire-Phelan geometry. In other words, this research evaluates how generative and parametric design can be integrated with structural performance in order to enhance design flexibility and control in different stages of the design process. The method we propose was built in three groups of procedures: 1) we developed a method to generate several fits for the two Weaire-Phelan polyhedrons using CA computation techniques; 2) through the finite elements method, we codify the structural analysis outcomes to use them as inputs for the CA algorithm; 3) evaluation: we propose a framework to compare how the final outcomes deviate for the good solutions in terms of structural performance and rationalization of components. We are interested in knowing how the combination of the procedures could contribute to produce complex structures that are at the same time certain rational. The system developed allows the structural analysis of structured automatically generated by a generative system. However, some efficient solutions from the structural performance point of view do not necessarily represent a rational solution from the feasibility aspects.

summary This paper describes the development of a workflow for the production of a net zero off-grid research cabin.  The workflow deploys a number of affiliated parametric software packages as a form finding tool for the exterior envelope of this structure, with a focus on passive solar design as a generative formal driver. The design was required to incorporate the spatial and programmatic needs of the users in a compact, barrier free, net zero building. Simultaneously, the research question asked the designers to harness the potential of digital design in the consideration of future fabrication techniques, in order to optimize the building’s performance and the speed and quality of assembly once the project moves into construction. Parameters considered include solar exposure, external surface area, cost, fabrication, functionality, and aesthetic criteria. This project was developed by a multidisciplinary team of graduate students at the University of Calgary.

summary Textiles are widely used in architecture for tensile structures, as they are lightweight and can easily span large distances. These structures typically require an external framework for a support. Inflatable structures are self-supporting but are limited to relatively simple forms or require complex and predetermined cut patterns. The development of an adaptive and programmable textile system with an integrative method for pneumatic activation would create a novel self-supporting structure with high degree of design and architectural potential. This creates a highly integrative hybrid system where the generic pneumatic membranes are constrained by the differentiated knitted textile skin that is stretched in several directions under air pressure. This allows for an innovative, lightweight, easily transportable design, where the preprogrammed knitting pattern defines the structure, geometry and formation, activated under pneumatic pressure.

summary Form analysis in architecture is a method to increase knowledge of human made objects, by observation and description. Modeling attempts to identify characteristics carried by these objects and the rules of their production. Two approaches are relevant here. The first concerns the analysis and modeling of an object corpus (decors worn by windows), belonging to colonial architecture of Tunis from the late 19th to early 20th century and the second deals from a GIS, storing and mapping the forms variation, taken on the analyzed objects. The set allows developing tools for decision support, used not only in the description of a corpus, but also ultimately to lead to the architectural and stylistic classification of the city buildings.

summary Each year, the United States discards 375 million tons of concrete construction debris to landfills (U.S. EPA 2016), but this is a new paradigm. Past civilizations cannibalized their constructions to produce new architectures (Hopkins 2005). This paper interrogates one cannibalistic methodology from the past known as cyclopean masonry in order to translate this valuable method into a contemporary digital procedure. The work contextualizes the techniques of this method and situates them into procedural recipes which can be applied in contemporary construction. A full-scale prototype is produced utilizing the described method; demolition debris is gathered, scanned, and processed through an algorithmic workflow. Each rubble unit is then minimally carved by a robotic arm and set to compose a new architecture from discarded rubble debris. The prototype merges ancient construction thinking with digital design and fabrication methodologies. It poses material cannibalism as a means of combating excessive construction waste generation.

summary The project was developed as part of an MArch Architecture design studio that looked at emerging bio-degradable living materials in the form of mycelium bio-composites as a way of manufacturing temporary structures. The project introduced students to laboratory methods for material development and bio-material cultivation. Students were asked to consider the implications of designing with a material that has agency and needs. The studio explored what it means to “make kin” (Haraway 2016) on a planet that has reached a tipping point. It approached the topic from the assumption that the breakdown of existing economic models and resource scarcity offers potent ground for new forms of space making to emerge. The studio looked to nature’s ability to respond to environmental stimuli and design constraints. Students harnessed advances in our scientific understanding to cultivate an architectural language that captures the transient and unstable nature of this new family of biomaterials

summary This paper presents a conceptual framework for understanding architectural works. This framework provides an understanding of an architectural building through qualitatively discerning the complexity of issues involved in its design and enabling their systematic integration into a theoretical construct. The premise behind this framework is that in design a better understanding of ‘what’ to design leads to a more informed base to ‘how’ to design. Using a grounded theory method, the paper postulates an ontological framework that recasts the Vitruvian triad of utilitas, venustas, and firmitas into spatial, intellectual, and structural forms respectively, and more importantly expands the triad to include context and architectural thinking as formative ideas, as integral components in any architectural work, thus closing a gap that existed in many frameworks dealing with architecture. The paper concluded that this framework offers a level of robust understanding of architecture that can be used in structuring the generation of architectural form as well as the description and analysis of existing works of architecture. Its value exceeds theory framing and extends towards architectural pedagogy as a theoretical framework in teaching design studio.

summary We present our research on the use of immersive stereo- scopic visualisation in interaction with collections of architectural rep- resentations. We investigate the processing and visualisation of multi- ple model representations from architectural datasets. We develop two models for locating collections of datasets in spatial contexts, namely a realistic gallery and a synthetic landscape. We evaluate and report the qualitative interactive experience with two forms of contextual in- teraction within a novel stereoscopic immersive visualisation (cylin- drical projection) environment. The use of immersive stereoscopic visualisation conveys aspects and dimensions of the collections that would not be possible without the forms of contextual interaction, the gallery metaphor and the synthetic landscape to interact with the ar- chitectural collections. The combination of abstract representations with realistic sense of scale and interaction provide the user with an immersive experience to convey the collective form.

summary Cities are continuously produced through entropic processes that mediate between complex networked systems and the immediacy urban life. Emergent media technologies inform new relationships between information and matter, code and space to redefine new urban ecosystems. Modes of perceiving, experiencing and inhabiting cities are radically changing along with a radical transformation of the tools that we use to design. Cities as complex and systemic organisms require approaches that engage new multi-scalar strategies to connect the physical layer with the system of networked ecologies. This paper aims at investigating emerging and novel forms of reading and producing urban spaces reimagining the physical city through intelligent and mediated processes. Through data agency and responsive urban processes, the design methodology explored the materialization of a temporary pneumatic structure and membrane that tested material performance through fabrication and sensing practices through the pneuSENSE project developed in July 2016 in New York at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the 'HyperCities' IaaC- Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia - Global Summer School.

summary The paper addresses a specific method for the production of custom-made, differentiated moulds for the realization of a complex, doubly-curved wall element during an international three-week architectural programme, Architectural Association (AA) Summer DLAB. The research objectives focus on linking geometry, structure, and robotic fabrication within the material agency of concrete. Computational workflow comprises the integration of structural analysis tools and real-time form-finding methods in order to inform global geometry and structural performance simultaneously. The ability to exchange information between various simulation, modelling, analysis, and fabrication software in a seamless fashion is one of the key areas where the creation of complex form meets with the simplicity of exchanging information throughout various platforms. The paper links the notions of complexity and simplicity throughout the design and fabrication processes. The aim to create a complex geometrical configuration within the simplicity of a single material system, concrete, presents itself as an opportunity for further discussion and development.

summary This paper describes the latest progress of the design platform Digital Impressionism (DI), created by staff and students in the Information Experience Design programme at the Royal College of Art in London. DI aims to bridge human creative thinking with machine computation, under the theoretical method/concept of oxymoron tectonic. Oxymoron tectonic describes the process under which hybrid materiality, that is the materiality created between the digital and the physical, takes form in human-machine creative interactions. The methodology intends to employ multimaterial 3D printers in combination with data manipulation (a process that gives data physical substance), pointclouds, and the influence of intangible environmental data (like sound and wind) to model physical forms by interfacing digital and physical making. In DI, modeling is a hybrid set of actions that take place at the boundary of the physical and digital. Through this interactive platform, design is experienced as a complex, hybrid process, which we call a digital tectonic; forms are constructed via a creative feedback loop of human engagement with nonhuman agents to form a creative network of sustainable and interactive design and fabrication. By developing a mutual understanding of design, machines and humans work together in the process of design and making.

summary This paper aims to provide a critical understanding of the discipline of architectural education, exploring how digital technology forms part of two Australian architecture schools. Generally accepted as the unbroken and consistent existence or operation of something over a period of time, continuity represents stability without interrup- tion. In the context of architectural design education, continuity aligns almost symbiotically with the design process; a system that facilitates a continuous loop of input, output and feedback for the designer— from defining the brief, collecting information, synthesising and pre- senting a design proposal. Preliminary findings of a larger research study that investigates the role of technology in architecture educa- tion, suggest that cultural patterns of technology adoption and valua- tion exist, valorising particular tools and establishing a framework for design teaching and practice that might disrupt the continuity of stu- dents’ design process. Moreover, the study shows evidence of a dis- ruption of continuity in design school narratives, emphasising the need to rethink design pedagogy and the place of technology herein. Reflecting on these observations, this paper explores the question: when the tools of digital technology challenge the established design process paradigm of an architectural school, how do educators re- spond to such a disruption in continuity?

summary The cultural heritage landscape (CHL) of the urban space in cities is the result of multiple layers of complexity, encompassing both the tangible built environment and intangible cultural values that together influence the living heritage that forms the spirit of place. This paper explores the gap in the intangible and living heritage documentation of CHLs by using a section of public space in the medieval historic centre of Bologna, Italy. Digital technology is used to propose a new paradigm in the study of the complex link between the tangible, intangible and living cultural heritage, co-existing in public spaces of a city’s cultural heritage landscape.

summary Mexico is one of the most urbanized countries in the Global South, and simultaneously faces a rapidly increasing population and a deluge of inadequate housing (URBANET 2019). In 2016, it was estimated that 40 percent of all private residences in Mexico were considered inadequate by UN-Habitat (UN-Habitat 2018). As informal housing constitutes over half of all Mexican housing construction, the most vulnerable groups of the population are particularly impacted. Therefore, there is a serious need to innovate in the area of low-cost building construction for housing in Mexico. This research explores how shape-optimized concrete and earth construction could help provide adequate housing without jeopardizing the country’s commitment to sustainability.
