It is about infusing, narrating, doping, context, information and masterful articulations. Concepts become spectrums; they live like the memory or traces of things that have been; they are not documents - they are animate. In this context interest of this paper is to see how can an image of book in the world of data be different than Kevin Lynch's systemic image of the city (Lynch 1960). Lynch has abstracted from the physical city. He is representing cities on the level of text, grammars and structures. What if one takes his exercise seriously and starts to play with text on the level on information, data, lists and indexes? What is an image of a book, its character, mood, how many faces does it have? This is a going to be a drama.

summary Since the emergence of the concept of user-generated content websites – Web 2.0, Internet communications have developed as a powerful personal and social phenomenon. Many Internet applications have become partially or entirely related to the concept of social network; and cyberspace has become a space about ‘us’ not ‘where’ we are. This paper investigates the theoretical grounds of the effect of cyber experience on changing the individuals’ uses of the public spaces, and sustaining this change through maintaining the ties and reciprocal influence between actions in physical and cyber spaces. It aims at examining the impact of cyber territories on the perception, definition and effectiveness of personal space within different circumstances; and its role in changing the uses of spaces where people used to act habitually. The personal space, here, will be represented as the core of both: change and consistency – the space of bridging the reciprocal effect of cyber and physical counterparts, which is transformed through the experience of physical events mediated into the cyberspace. The paper is part of a study which looks at the case of Tahrir Square during the Egyptian political movement in 2011. We will compare the activists’ actions and practices in the Square during different events of non-routine use of the square and its surroundings. The case study will show the level of consistency in the features of the produced personal space within different waves of the revolutionary actions for all that different circumstances, motivations and results.

summary A thin line lies between reality and fiction; what is mentally imagined and what is visualized. It all depends on how ideas and images are perceived or what neurological activity is triggered in the user’s brain. Architects and designers spare no effort or tools in presenting buildings, architecture or designs in all forms or ways that would augment users’ experience whether on the perceptual or the cognitive level and in both the digital or the physical environments. In a progressive tendency they, the designers, tend to rely more and more on digitizing their vision and mission, which subsequently give them, impressive and expressive superiority, that would influence the users conscious on the one hand and manipulate their subconscious on the other. Within that process designers work hard to break any mental firewall that would prevent their ideas from pervading the space of any mental environment the user, build or visualize. In that context, to what extent such ways of mental entertainments used by architects, legitimize deception in design? What distinguishes employing the rhythmic simulation of the narrative fictional inceptions (virtual reality) from deploying the adaptive stimulation of the experience modeling conceptions. The difference between planting an idea and constructing an idea. It is not the intention of the paper to prove the failure of the computer aided design neither to stand against the digital architectural design media and applications development. It is rather to present a different way of understanding of how architectural design whether virtual, digital, or real can stimulates and induces codes and messages that is correlated to the brainwave cognitive attributes and can generate a narrative brain environment where the brain can construct and simulate its own fictional design. Doing so, the paper will review certain experimental architectural events and activities which integrate sound and sight elements and effects within some electronic, technical and digital environments.

summary Through space we can read the acts and the daily activities of human being and, we can also understand different interactions within any social unit. This paper explain how specially the space type can interpret why the human being derives to a negative behavior like "Crime". So, in this study we adopt the visibility approach which is developed by the laboratory of space syntax (UCL), and which makes a sense for the link between the space design and its use and its positive or negative social consequences in the future. Then, the purpose of this paper is to present the importance of the use of visibility map which can also be an outlook approach for detecting potential hot-spots in urban planning designs specially of new cities, for avoiding the negative using of urban spaces like "Crime" in the future. The case of study is the new city of Ali Mendjeli (Constantine - Algeria), the capital of the East of Algeria known by a very fast demographic and urban growth. After analyzing a central urban neighborhood of this city using Depthmap, we found thirty-four hot-spots which can be appropriate spaces for the exercise of crime in the future, and we found that this point was downplayed in the urban planning designs before the realization of Ali Mendjeli new city.

summary Over the last decade, paradigm shifts in the philosophy of space-time relations, the change from space-time to spatio-temporality, caused significant changes in the design field, and introduced new variations and discourses for parametric approaches in architecture. Among all the discourses, parametricism is likely the most spectacular one. The founder of parametricism, Patrik Schumacher (2009) describes it as “a new style,” which has “the superior capacity to articulate programmatic complexity;” and “aesthetically, it is the elegance of ordered complexity in the sense of seamless fluidity.” In its theoretical background, Schumacher (2011) affiliates this style with the philosophy of autopoiesis, the philosophy that stands between making and becoming. Additionally, parametricism concerns not only the physical geometry in making of form; but also discusses the relational and causal aspects in becoming of form. In other words, it brings the aesthetic qualities in making through the topological intelligence behind becoming. Regarding that, parametricism seems an effective way of managing /creating complex topologies in form-related issues. However, when it comes to practice, there are some challenging points of parametricism in large-scale design studies. Thus, this work underlines that the dominance of elegance for urban planning has the potential of limiting the flexible and dynamic topology of the urban context, and objectifying the whole complex urban form as an over-designed product. For an aesthetic inquiry into urban parametricism, this paper highlights the challenging issues behind the aesthetic premises of parametricism at the urban design scale. For that, Kartal Master Plan Design Proposal by Zaha Hadid Architects (2006) will be discussed as an exemplary work.

summary In previous efforts, the foundation of a general theory that searches for finding lightest manmade structures using the Delaunay diagram or its dual the Voronoi diagram was set (Ezzat, 2016). That foundation rests on using a simple and computationally cheap Centroid method. The simple Centroid method is expected to play a crucial role in the more sophisticated general theory. The Centroid method was simply about classifying a cloud of points that represents specific load case/s stresses on any object. That classification keeps changing using mathematical functions until optimal structures are found. The point cloud then is classified into different smaller points' groups; each of these groups was represented by a single positional point that is related to the points' group mean. Those representational points were used to generate the Delaunay or Voronoi diagrams, which are tested structurally to prove or disprove the optimality of the classification. There was not a single optimized classification out of that process but rather a family of them. The point cloud was the input to the centroid structural optimization, and the family of the optimized centroid method is the input to our proposed implementation of the general theory (see Figure 1). The centroid method produced promising optimized structures that performed from five to ten times better than the other tested variations. The centroid method was implemented using the two structural plugins of Millipede and Karmaba, which run under the environment of the Grasshopper plugin. The optimization itself is done using the grasshopper's component of Galapagos.

title Reciprocal transformations between music and architecture as a real-time supporting mechanism in urban design

summary The more complex our cities become, the more difficult it is for designers to use traditional tools for understanding and analyzing the inner essence of an eco-system such as the contemporary urban environment. Even many of the recently crafted digital tools fail to address the necessity for a more holistic design approach which captures the virtual and the physical, the immaterial and the material. Handling of massive chunks of information and classification and assessment of diverse data are nowadays more crucial than ever before. We see a significant potential in combining the fields of composition in music and architecture through the use of information technology. Merging the two fields has the intense potential to release new, innovative tools for urban designers. This article describes an innovative tool developed at the Technical University of Crete, through which an urban designer can work on the music transcription of a specific urban environment applying music compositional rules and filters in order to identify discordant entities, highlight imbalanced parts, and make design corrections. Our cities can be tuned.

title Activist systems: Futuring with living models

summary This article considers how computational simulation can be used to amplify imagination and make its effects sharable, persuasive and activist. It argues that this is not only possible but important for the future of design and introduces the concept of living models as a device that can express the futuring potential of such simulations. Developing this argument, the article explores whether, by postponing top-down rationalisms in favour of a ‘methodological naivete?’, designers can gain the capacity to uncover and engage with the unusual participants of the complex dynamic assemblages they aim to change. When designers collaborate with the agencies of the living models they deploy, the outcomes prove useful for the exploration of alternative values and worldviews. Explorations of this kind are significant because human designs need to improve their integrations with existing complex systems and are innovative in their ambition to see creative agency in non-human actors. In a practical demonstration of such approaches, the experiments in generative computation presented in this article illustrate that design creativity occurs through humans but not entirely because of them.

summary This article analyses some of the proposals produced in the late 1970´s by the American contemporary artist Dan Graham, in which he uses technical means to investigate the audience´s perception and behavior. The questions raised highlight reciprocity phenomena and identity constructions – factors that affect our experience and behavior in contemporary cities daily life. All of these issues derive from Graham´s investigations of the main information and communication technologies (media) produced at that time, and which continue to offer reflections on current relationship between technical means and the subject – that is, his/her condition as audience, observer, spectator or user.

summary This paper expounds the teaching strategies used to introduce architecture students in the craft of design in the course Taller de Proyecto 1. These strategies are based on experiential mappings constructed from different digital resources allowing constantly confront design with real life, in order to maintain, throughout the process, a sensitive and precise relationship between reality and experience. It concludes that these methodologies strengthen the autonomy of students, developing a valuable reconnection with the way they look and transform the world, validating the premise that the act of design is an innate human act and not necessarily an erudite one.

summary High tech industries are playing an important role in the economic development in the United States. While some cities are shrinking, the "innovation" cities are growing. The attributes that cause some cities to successfully become innovative is a very relevant 21st century topic and will be investigated here.Previous work conduct city analysis through conventional government GIS or census data but such analyses do not answer questions about the perception of citizens inhabiting the city, and the activities they conduct. The novelty of this current project is to make use of large-scale bottom-up data available from social media. Several social media sources-CrunchBase, Twitter, Yelp, and Flickr- were data mined pertaining to four innovation districts in Boston. We found that the success of innovation districts in Boston were correlated with several important variables: the most successful districts tended to occur near research institutions, in very "mixed use" areas, and were unexpectedly not correlated with land and labor prices, unlike technology districts in the past. Based on our study, we make recommendations for the urban design that cities should put in place to increase the potential for "innovation".

summary Self-assembling manufacturing for natural polymers is still in its infancy, despite the urgent need for alternatives to fuel-based products. Non-fuel based products, specifically bio-polymers, possess exceptional mechanical properties and biodegradability. Bacterial cellulose has proven to be a remarkably versatile bio-polymer, gaining attention in a wide variety of applied scientific applications such as electronics, biomedical devices, and tissue-engineering. In order to introduce bacterial cellulose as a building material, it is important to develop bio-fabrication methodologies linked to material-informed computational modeling and material science. This paper emphasizes the development of three-dimensionally grown bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes for large-scale applications, and introduces new manufacturing technologies that combine the fields of bio-materials science, digital fabrication, and material-informed computational modeling. This paper demonstrates a novel method for bacterial cellulose bio-synthesis as well as in-situ self-assembly fabrication and scaffolding techniques that are able to control three-dimensional shapes and material behavior of BC. Furthermore, it clarifies the factors affecting the bio-synthetic pathway of bacterial cellulose—such as bacteria, environmental conditions, nutrients, and growth medium—by altering the mechanical properties, tensile strength, and thickness of bacterial cellulose. The transformation of the bio-synthesis of bacterial cellulose into BC-based bio-composite leads to the creation of new materials with additional functionality and properties. Potential applications range from small architectural components to large structures, thus linking formation and materialization, and achieving a material with specified ranges and gradient conditions, such as hydrophobic or hydrophilic capacity, graded mechanical properties over time, material responsiveness, and biodegradability.

summary The research builds on the relationship between matter and energy and the idea of boundaries as sentient interfaces capable of affecting our bodily experience and perception of space due to their inherent physical attributes. Two key issues addressed are firstly, the revisiting of the architectural boundary as a thermodynamic zone and secondly, the identification of material behaviour in relation to energy stimuli. It is argued that the transient behaviour of materials can offer an instrumental reconsideration on how architecture establishes spatial articulation through boundaries and this is demonstrated through a design-led project.

summary This paper describes the design process behind Caress of the Gaze, a project that represents a new approach to the design of a gaze-actuated, 3D printed body architecture—as a form of proto-architectural study—providing a framework for an interactive dynamic design. The design process engages with three main issues. Firstly, it aims to look at form or geometry as a means of controlling material behavior by exploring the tectonic properties of multi-material 3D printing technologies. Secondly, it addresses novel actuation systems by using Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) in order to achieve life-like behavior. Thirdly, it explores the possibility of engaging with interactive systems by investigating how our clothing could interact with other people as a primary interface, using vision-based eye-gaze tracking technologies. In so doing, this paper describes a radically alternative approach not only to the production of garments but also to the ways we interact with the world around us. Therefore, the paper addresses the emerging field of shape-changing 3D printed structures and interactive systems that bridge the worlds of robotics, architecture, technology, and design.

title Investigating cultural uniqueness in theme parks through finding relationships between visual integration of visitor traffics and capacity of service facilities

summary The goal of the article is to find the relationships between theme park visitor traffics and service facility location along with their capacities. To do that, we analyzed four Disneylands situated in Paris, Tokyo, and the United States (Florida and California). By analyzing the visual integration of visitor traffics at each Disneyland and calculating the capacities of service facilities such as the attractions, shops, and restaurants, we ran through a linear and a geographically weighted regression analysis. Our results indicate that there is a unique relationship between the service facility placements and the amount of predicted traffic flows for each Disneyland.

summary Skill in the use of digital media tools is growing more im- portant in architectural education. However parametric objects in computational geometry or digital fabrication as an assist for project- based learning are not in themselves sufficient to extract the potential of computational design. When we consider the performance of a de- sign, or the fundamental purpose of parametric design toolsets in the contemporary context, education must act as a connecter to the ambi- tion of global sustainability. With regards to the advantage of compu- tational methodologies, students benefit by developing a holistic vi- sion of non-standardized assembly technology. This is particularly useful in overcoming problems of mass production, and with the crea- tion of interactive technology that is incrementally adaptable in the process of answering to unpredictable change. In this context, a com- prehensive understanding of digital tools as part of a holistic and eco- logical architectural design mindset is crucial for future designers. Exploring effective ways to guide students in the development of this capability is therefore important. This paper documents a recent effort in this direction through examples of education within a digital design studio. As a conclusion the paper discusses important factors in the encouragement of students as they develop a comprehensive under- standing of the use of digital design culture.

summary According to eCAADe's mission, the exchange and collaboration within the area of computer aided architectural design education and research, while respecting the pedagogical approaches in the different schools and countries, can be regarded as a core activity. The current session follows up on the first Contextualised Digital Heritage Workshop (CDHW) held on the occasion of eCAADe 2016 in Oulu (D. di Mascio et.al.) This event was thought to represent the first of a series of future contextualized digital heritage workshops and hence, the name Oulu interchangeable with the name of any other city or place. The second CDHW took place in the framework of CAADRIA 2017 in Suzhou (D. di Mascio & M.A. Schnabel) and focussed on sharing and dissemination of heritage information and personal experiences, such as narratives.The primary objective for the 2018 digital heritage session is to engage participants in an active discussion, not the longer format presentation of prepared positions. The round table itself is limited to short opening statements so as to ensure time is allowed for viewpoints to be exchanged and for the conference attendees to join in on the issues discussed. The panel will review past practices with the potential for guiding future direction.

summary In the early design phases, designers usually only have a vague idea of the building they are designing. Different aspects of potential design variants need to be tested, assessed and compared with one another. The ability to consider design variants in different ways – based on floor plan, schematic concept, section or 3D visualization, for example – helps to identify problems as well as reveal areas of potential. This paper describes software prototypes developed to help designers input and present different levels of abstraction. The transformations between these levels of abstraction reveal new solutions and make designers aware of issues that need to be considered during the design process.

summary The topic "Crowdthinking" reveals the inquiries of researchers about collaborative work, distributed intelligence and collective research. The call focuses on transdisciplinary thinking as a construct based on multiplicity and diversity. All these topics are essential not only in the field of design and architecture, but also in emerging areas of human sciences and arts . Currently, the collaborative design is considered one of the key bases for change in the city and society. In its genesis, it manifests the notion that the world around us is inadequate for many of the needs of the society and from that design can be collectively improved. Such collective research, by combining distributed intelligence, sustainable social development, design cutting edge research, theories and computational strategies, generates a research partnership based on participation and distributed cognition of complex problems. This call proposes an approach in which the results of the experiences can build a model, define or apply axioms and lead to applications. It also looks for emerging conjectures about the process, the creation of computer models and the behaviour of the resulting designs. On the other hand, the need to find solutions that improve the quality of life for the community and sustainable development includes concerns about the integration of the physical and cultural context of cities, mass education and the inclusion of parametric design, digital manufacturing and digital prototyping, and BIM as a system that organizes and ensures the correspondence between the physical urban design and sustainable archetypes. These are some of the concerns in which technology has been contributing to improve the design process by integrating information. This integration optimizes resources and enables the various project professionals to work on the same model, run simulations, improve materializations and evaluate massive amount of data. Projects with greater social and environmental responsibility can be achieved adopting into the teaching and practice this new way of design that anticipates an extensive exchange that wilt foster self-evaluation and reformulation of educational paradigms.
