summary This paper presents a conceptual framework for understanding architectural works. This framework provides an understanding of an architectural building through qualitatively discerning the complexity of issues involved in its design and enabling their systematic integration into a theoretical construct. The premise behind this framework is that in design a better understanding of ‘what’ to design leads to a more informed base to ‘how’ to design. Using a grounded theory method, the paper postulates an ontological framework that recasts the Vitruvian triad of utilitas, venustas, and firmitas into spatial, intellectual, and structural forms respectively, and more importantly expands the triad to include context and architectural thinking as formative ideas, as integral components in any architectural work, thus closing a gap that existed in many frameworks dealing with architecture. The paper concluded that this framework offers a level of robust understanding of architecture that can be used in structuring the generation of architectural form as well as the description and analysis of existing works of architecture. Its value exceeds theory framing and extends towards architectural pedagogy as a theoretical framework in teaching design studio.

summary The architecture has been greatly expanded in its complexity by the resources of computing. Thus, most intense experiences are achieved through visual metaphors. As a way of understanding digital cases increasingly present in the design of everyday life, this work aims to illustrate an application of the semiotic method of Charles W. Morris: a study on digital design created by Kokkugia Architects, the building Babiy Yar Memorial. A syntactic analysis of the digital process (presenting the concepts and key elements within the process) is performed; the understanding of that expression in the semantic context and, finally, their contextual pragmatic aspects.

summary This study investigates the relationships of field observa- tion, multi-agent simulation and space-syntax theory in spatial config- uration for developing design strategy for a case study, a tourist hub area in Musi Riverside, Palembang. Having such potential advantage and to tackle existing social and urban issues, our study developed a design approach based on multi-agent simulation enhanced by space syntax theory. The goal of this study is a deep understanding of multi agent simulation through mechanism of validation using field obser- vation and by taking into account the existing urban features. The purpose is to develop design strategy of pedestrian-centric urban space to be functioned as a tourist hub based on computational modelling. Following the paths result of pedestrian flow by multi-agents simula- tion, we elaborated the analysis of facility programming by means of Space Syntax theory. It shows the ranking of facility programs based on their relative connectivity and integration. By merging this result, it assembles programs and their circulation spaces by means of compu- tational simulation. Experimenting in both fields show a novel ap- proach for pedestrian-centric design in urban scale, particularly since behavioural models rarely used in early stage of design process. It shows that multi-agent simulation should be coupled with field obser- vation.

summary This paper presents a strategy for experiential analysis in the traditional classroom environment to determine architectural features to contribute to the understanding and improvement of the pupil – teacher interaction. The methodology includes the analysis of the following topical propositions: visual, proxemic and kinetic in four classroom environments. The conclusions suggest that this hybrid methodological corpus allows for the identification and quantification of significant perceptual variations in relation to the proportion of the classroom space. It also emphasizes the importance of integrating aspects of sensory based analysis in the architectural design process to ensure quality of relations in the classroom.

summary Contemporary advanced simulation software allow for a higher accuracy in the understanding of material behaviour. The increase in computational power is enabling designers to get much closer to real time physical simulations, which facilitates the inheritance of those tools in their design workflows.However, the use of those tools is normally limited to a series of specific steps within the entire workflow, rather than a feature integrated in the design process itself.Softmodelling is an open source Java application which aims to bridge this gap by seamlessly integrating physical simulations in every step of the design process, giving designers the ability to not only test structural behaviours of a given output, but also allow them to design while taking both structural stability and material behaviour into account at every stage.This paper will discuss the design and evolution of the software, as well as showcase physical prototypes which explore the possibilities of such design methods. These projects are fundamental in materialising the evolution of Softmodelling, towards becoming an application that does not only enable the design of flexible elements, but also facilitates their manufacturing and assembly into large scale structures.

summary New lighting technologies may fulfill a need for holistic design methods by offering opportunities for both architects and engineers to apply methods and knowledge from media technology that combine daylight and interactive light, in order to complement and deepen an understanding of context. The framework combines daylight and interactive light and includes human needs analysis, spatial understanding, qualitative analysis, qualitative tests and visual assessments. A transdisciplinary model termed the "Architectural Experiment" is applied in a specific case by combining serial, parallel and iterative processes which include contextual analysis, architectural design, simulation, C++ programming, implementation of the dynamic smart-film diffuser, programming of voltage ranges on Arduino boards, rapid prototype construction and lighting technology.

summary The ascension of social media platforms has transformed our understanding of urban environments, giving rise to nuanced variations in sentiment reaction embedded within human perception and opinion, and challenging existing multidimensional sentiment analysis approaches in urban studies. This study presents novel methodologies for identifying and elucidating sentiment inconsistency, constructing a dataset encompassing 140,750 Baidu and Tencent Street view images to measure perceptions, and 984,024 Weibo social media text posts to measure opinions. A reaction index is developed, integrating object detection and natural language processing techniques to classify sentiment in Beijing Second Ring for 2016 and 2022. Classified sentiment reaction is analysed and visualized using regression analysis, image segmentation, and word frequency based on land-use distribution to discern underlying factors. The perception affective reaction trend map reveals a shift toward more evenly distributed positive sentiment, while the opinion affective reaction trend map shows more extreme changes. Our mismatch map indicates significant disparities between the sentiments of human perception and opinion of urban areas over the years. Changes in sentiment reactions have significant relationships with elements such as dense buildings and pedestrian presence. Our inconsistent maps present perception and opinion sentiments before and after the pandemic and offer potential explanations and directions for environmental management, in formulating strategies for urban renewal.

summary Architectural facades are designed to respond to environmental, social and functional considerations among others. Advancements in Digital Design Computation (DDC) emerged as an essential support for exploring and creating contemporary architectural facades. Current research into responsive kinetic facade suggests different methods of integrating kinetics into physical facade. However, research indicates that physical façades struggle to achieve the anticipated kinetic responses. In addition, the process is formal, prescribed, lacks flexibility and mostly assists the designer in the visualization of design. Consequently, the challenges in understanding the creative process that mediates between digital/physical kinetics are important to address in the early design stage. Digital and physical façade prototypes would allow designers to test the qualities of such system before constructing full size mock-ups and discover new modes of parametric design thinking in architecture.

summary This paper presents the progress of a pilot classroom, which uses mobile devices to enhance instructor-student classroom interac- tions and students’ learning of the History of Art and Architecture. The main objective of this research was to find a way of improving classroom activities, for the coming year, by making the best possible use of technology to enable students to learn more successfully and improve their understanding of the lesson content. In this paper, class- room activities during 2014 and 2015 are analysed using the SAMR Model coupled with Bloom’s revised taxonomy and the EdTech Quin- tet Model. In addition, a plan for the redesign and improvement of ac- tivities in 2016 is proposed, the effectiveness of the SAMR model at improving in class activities is discussed and a perspective on how to develop the classroom using the “SAMR ladder” is included. The re- sults show that in 2015, 25% of the students in the class achieved an A grade, and less than 5% were graded F compared to 26% in 2012.

summary This paper reports on the outcome of several tests that are run to examine the behavior of virtual and physical models of a chained block. Correlations between parameters of the component and the global geometry are studied using parametric modeling and physical model. Studies are limited to proportional and non-proportional relations according to the direction of the force. Further experiments are expected in the future to explore other forces. These computer-aided analyses offer a deeper understanding of the behavior of the system towards an intentional control of the global geometry.

summary Finding an attractive or best-fit neighborhood for a new resident of any city is not only important from the perspective of the resident him or herself, but has larger implications for developers and city planners. The environment or mood of the right neighborhood is not simply created through traditional characteristics such as income, crime, or zoning regulations - more ephemeral traits related to user-perception also have significant weight. Using datasets and tools previously unassociated with real-estate decision-making and neighborhood planning, such as social media and machine learning, we create a non-deterministic and customized way of discovering and understanding neighborhoods. Our project creates a customizable ranking system for the 195 neighborhoods in New York City that helps users find the one that best matches their preferences. Our team has developed a composite weighted score with urban spatial data and social media data to rank all NYC neighborhoods based on a series of questions asked to the user. The project's contribution is to provide a scientific and calibrated understanding of the impact that socially oriented activities and preferences have towards the uses of space.

summary The main aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of the role of verbal concepts in the architectural design processes of the students in a studio context. To serve this purpose, we carried out a 15-week studio in an urban architectural masters design studio at KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture. We observed the use of verbal concepts in time during this studio and analyzed the design processes of the students based on their self-report logs on the studio web platform. Based on these, we conducted a statistic analysis and a network mapping study. We found that early concepts provide a starting point for developing fully-fledged specialized design ideas. Furthermore, a higher number of links between concepts indicated their importance during the process. In addition, the data collection and research methods proved to be reliable for mapping the design process of the students as well as revealing the evolution of the ideas in the studio.

summary This paper reports an investigation into the degree of con- sistency between three different methods of sound performance evalu- ation through studying the performance of a built project as a case study. The non-controlled office environment with natural human speech as a source was selected for the subjective experiment and ODEON room acoustics modelling software was applied for digital simulation. The results indicate that although each participant may in- terpret and perceive sound in a particular way, the simulation can pre- dict this complexity to some extent to help architects in designing acoustically better spaces. Also the results imply that architects can make valid comparative evaluations of their designs in an architectur- ally intuitive way, using architectural language. The research acknowledges that complicated engineering approaches to subjective analysis and to controlling the test environment and participants is dif- ficult for architects to comprehend and implement.

summary Complex forms and structures have always been highly valued in architecture, even much before the development of computers. Many architects and engineers have strived to develop structures that look very complex but at the same time are relatively simple to understand, calculate and build. A good example of this approach is the Beijing National Aquatics Centre design for the 2008 Olympic Games, also known as the Water Cube. This paper presents a proposal for a structural variance-producing engine using cellular automata (CA) techniques to produce complex structures based on Weaire-Phelan geometry. In other words, this research evaluates how generative and parametric design can be integrated with structural performance in order to enhance design flexibility and control in different stages of the design process. The method we propose was built in three groups of procedures: 1) we developed a method to generate several fits for the two Weaire-Phelan polyhedrons using CA computation techniques; 2) through the finite elements method, we codify the structural analysis outcomes to use them as inputs for the CA algorithm; 3) evaluation: we propose a framework to compare how the final outcomes deviate for the good solutions in terms of structural performance and rationalization of components. We are interested in knowing how the combination of the procedures could contribute to produce complex structures that are at the same time certain rational. The system developed allows the structural analysis of structured automatically generated by a generative system. However, some efficient solutions from the structural performance point of view do not necessarily represent a rational solution from the feasibility aspects.

summary This article synthesizes the result of a systematization and analysis of videomapping carried out in “Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada” in the period 2014-2022, taking as a source the information collected in the investigation "(Lafluf, 2020), it is updated by integrating new experiences and new interpretations. Likewise, the article aims to provide a structured way to describe and analyze videomapping projects, keeping in mind three axes: context project, mapping project, and mapping event. These categories refer to a strategy developed within the methodological framework of the master's thesis "Videomapping en los proyectos del Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada de la Facultad de Arquitectura Diseno y Urbanismo (Udelar). Caso de estudio: Videomapping Patrimonio Anglo" (Lafluf, 2020) as well as in other investigations to describe the videomapping. Once this set of videomapping projects has been presented, general considerations are made to analyze the surveyed cases.

summary In Brazil, the application of wood in contemporary constructions is concentrated in the south and southeast. However, the entire country has area for cultivation and forest management, which is favorable for expansion in such applications. Wood is capable of absorbing CO2 and consumes little energy in production and manufacturing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the deficiencies of the building typologies became evident. This research aims to analyze digitally executed prefabricated houses such as Instant House (1), Digitally Fabricated House (2) by Sass, and WikiHouse (3) by Parvin; under the categories of Cardoso (2016): modulation, reversibility, and flexibility. The deductive method was used to investigate assumptions among the three case studies; and grounded in scientific literature to analyze and collect data. In general, the solutions studied enabled customizable systems allied to wood panels, modules, and fittings as generators of architectural form.

summary Lighting analysis tools have proven their ability in helping designers provide functional lighting, increase comfort levels and reduce energy consumption in buildings. Consequently, the number of lighting analysis software is increasing and all are competing to provide credible and rigorous analysis. The rapid adoption of parametric design in architecture, however, has resulted in complex forms that make the evaluation of the accuracy of digital analysis more challenging. This study aims to evaluate and compare the performance of daylighting analysis in two industry standard software (Autodesk Revit and 3ds Max) when analysing the daylighting of complex parametric façade patterns. The study has shown that, generally, both Revit and 3ds Max underestimate illuminance values when compared to physical scaled models. 3ds Max was found to outperform Revit when simulating complex parametric patterns, while Revit was found to outperform 3ds Max when simulating simple fenestration geometries. As a general conclusion, the rapid progress of parametric modelling, integrated with fabrication technologies, has made daylighting analysis of complex geometries more challenging. There is a need for more sophisticated algorithms that can handle the increased level of complexity as well as further verification studies to evaluate the accuracy claims made by software vendors.

summary In early stages of architectural design, highly simplified minimal models are often preferred while in the later stages maximal Building Information Models (BIM) are required that include the relevant information for detailed design documentation. This research focuses on the transition from minimal to maximal models and proposes a semi-automated workflow that consist of two main steps: analysis and templating. The analysis step starts with the minimal geometric model and decorates this model with a set of semantic and topological attributes. The templating step starts the decorated model and generates a transitional BIM model which can then be readily altered and populated with high resolution building information. A demonstration of two test cases shows the feasibility of the approach.

summary The paper presents results of a research conducted in 2015 and 2016 at Lodz University of Technology. It proposes a purpose and context fit approach towards the automation of urban data generation based on GIS tools and New Urbanism typologies. First, background studies of methods applied in urban morphology analysis are revealed. Form-Based Code planning, and subsequently Transect-Based Code are taken into account. Then, selected examples from literature are described and discussed. Finally, the research study is presented and the outcomes compared with more traditional methodology.

summary The paper describes and discusses the possible integration of gradient analysis, as a method and tool for architects and designers to analyze the degree of proportion-complexity of a design, into the process of designing an object utilizing interactive genetic algorithms (IGA). A VBA implementation for AutoCAD has been developed by the authors, enabling to test the usability of genetic algorithms (GA) for minimizing the angle-redundancy and length-redundancy quotient. The gradient analysis itself has been developed on the basic assumption that the complexity of an objects appearance is reduced by redundancy, which can be measured focussing on different levels of comparison; among others e. g. variety of material, colour-combinations and proportion. The latter comes under scrutiny if the method of gradient analysis is applied.
