summary Virtual Reality (VR) software has developed to the point where, for the architect who is averagely technically adept, it can be incorporated into the design process with reasonable effort and costs. For VR to be an effective design tool, it must add value to the design process and should give insights and opportunities not available by other methods.Previous research by the authors reported on the results of an international student workshop which focused both on the workflow (to prepare the architectural models for the new VR systems) and the spatial perception that users experienced. In this paper, we continue to explore the question: "Can low cost VR be an effective addition to the architects' design toolbox, or does it still remain a "far-fetched, high-tech expensive folly?"To do this we are working with a larger group of students, a more developed workflow and we are also expanding this to architects in practice. We will be assessing both the practicality of integrating VR into the design workflow and the spatial perception of the designer when interacting with the model. We are experimenting with additional interface tools.

summary The introduction of lightweight Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) based systems into the discipline of architecture and design has created new opportunities for form, fabrication methodologies and material efficiencies that were previously difficult if not impossible to achieve through the utilization of traditional standardized building materials. No longer constrained by predefined material shapes, nominal dimensions, and conventional construction techniques, individual building components or entire structures can now be fabricated from a single continuous material through a means that best accomplishes the desired formal and structural objectives while creating minimal amounts of construction waste and disposable formwork. This paper investigates the design, fabrication and structural potentials of wound, pre-impregnated CFRP composites in architectural-scale applications through the lens of numeric and craft based composite winding implemented in two unique research projects (rolyPOLY + Cloud Magnet). Fitting into the larger research agenda for the CFRP-based robotic housing prototype currently underway in the “One Day House” initiative, these two projects also function as a proof of concept for CFRP monocoque and gridshell based structural systems. Through a rigorous investigation of these case studies, this paper strives to answer several questions about the integration of pre-impregnated CFRP in future full-scale interventions: What form-finding methodologies lend themselves to working with CFRP? What are the advantages and disadvantages of working with pre-impregnated CFRP tow in large-scale applications? What are efficient methods for the placement of CFRP fiber on-site? As well as how scalable is CFRP?

summary New advances in 3D modelling and visualization tools for large-scale landscape and construction projects have been achieved recently. The introduction of the new 3D digital modelling and visualization tools, e.g. CAD, VR, GIS and BIM initiated a huge shift in the way planners and designers develop, communicate and present project scenarios. This paper outlines the challenges, new trends and workflows connected to the use of new tools and how it’s been practiced and experienced by professionals and stakeholders as observed in Norway. The observation shows that the latest developments are providing new potentials for performing better communication and collaboration. Planners could now demonstrate many aspects of a project which exceed the usual minimum requirements. An important functionality is the capability to work with huge amount of data-sets for large-scale projects which were previously almost impossible to work with.

summary This paper will summarise the findings from creating and implementing a visually high quality Virtual Reality (VR) experiment as part of an international architecture exhibition. It was the aim to represent the architectural spatial qualities as well as the atmosphere created from combining natural and artificial lighting in a prominent not yet built project. The outcome is twofold: Findings concerning the integration of VR in an exhibition space and findings concerning the experience of the virtual space itself. In the exhibition, an important aspect was the unmanned exhibition space, requiring the VR experience to be self-explanatory. Observations of different visitor reactions to the unmanned VR experience compared with visitor reactions at guided tours with personal instructions are evaluated. Data on perception of realism, spatial quality and light in the VR model were collected with qualitative and quantitative methods at two different occasions and setups after the exhibition, both showing a high degree of immersion and experience of reality.

summary A thin line lies between reality and fiction; what is mentally imagined and what is visualized. It all depends on how ideas and images are perceived or what neurological activity is triggered in the user’s brain. Architects and designers spare no effort or tools in presenting buildings, architecture or designs in all forms or ways that would augment users’ experience whether on the perceptual or the cognitive level and in both the digital or the physical environments. In a progressive tendency they, the designers, tend to rely more and more on digitizing their vision and mission, which subsequently give them, impressive and expressive superiority, that would influence the users conscious on the one hand and manipulate their subconscious on the other. Within that process designers work hard to break any mental firewall that would prevent their ideas from pervading the space of any mental environment the user, build or visualize. In that context, to what extent such ways of mental entertainments used by architects, legitimize deception in design? What distinguishes employing the rhythmic simulation of the narrative fictional inceptions (virtual reality) from deploying the adaptive stimulation of the experience modeling conceptions. The difference between planting an idea and constructing an idea. It is not the intention of the paper to prove the failure of the computer aided design neither to stand against the digital architectural design media and applications development. It is rather to present a different way of understanding of how architectural design whether virtual, digital, or real can stimulates and induces codes and messages that is correlated to the brainwave cognitive attributes and can generate a narrative brain environment where the brain can construct and simulate its own fictional design. Doing so, the paper will review certain experimental architectural events and activities which integrate sound and sight elements and effects within some electronic, technical and digital environments.

summary According to eCAADe's mission, the exchange and collaboration within the area of computer aided architectural design education and research, while respecting the pedagogical approaches in the different schools and countries, can be regarded as a core activity. The current session follows up on the first Contextualised Digital Heritage Workshop (CDHW) held on the occasion of eCAADe 2016 in Oulu (D. di Mascio et.al.) This event was thought to represent the first of a series of future contextualized digital heritage workshops and hence, the name Oulu interchangeable with the name of any other city or place. The second CDHW took place in the framework of CAADRIA 2017 in Suzhou (D. di Mascio & M.A. Schnabel) and focussed on sharing and dissemination of heritage information and personal experiences, such as narratives.The primary objective for the 2018 digital heritage session is to engage participants in an active discussion, not the longer format presentation of prepared positions. The round table itself is limited to short opening statements so as to ensure time is allowed for viewpoints to be exchanged and for the conference attendees to join in on the issues discussed. The panel will review past practices with the potential for guiding future direction.

title Processing architecture

summary Programming promotes creative freedom but might require considerable effort to learn. The Processing language was created to simplify this learning process. Due to its graphical capabilities, the language has become very popular among the electronic arts and design communities. Unfortunately, this popularity could not be extended to the architecture community, which relies on traditional heavyweight computer-aided design and building information modeling applications that cannot be programmed using Processing. As a result, it becomes difficult for architects to take advantage of Processing. To solve this problem, we propose an implementation of Processing that runs in the context of the most used computer-aided design tools in architecture. Our implementation allows Processing to generate two- or three-dimensional models that are directly usable for architectural work. To this end, we also propose extensions to the language, including three-dimensional modeling primitives that dramatically simplify the effort needed for developing large and complex architectural models with Processing.

summary Within the contemporary condition, turbulence that confronts architecture is no longer unpredictable weather patterns or wild beasts, but the unintended forces of a constantly connected digital infrastructure that demands constant attention. If, as Mark Wigley puts it, “architecture is always constructed in and against a storm” it is time for architecture to reevaluate its ability to separate us from a new storm-one that situates technology, global connectivity, human, non-human and composite users, and algorithmic architecture itself as new weather systems. Toward this end, this paper explores architecture’s ability to mediate and produce algorithmic turbulence generated through image-based sensing of the built environment. Through a close reading of Le Corbusier’s Urbanisme, we argue that for much of the 20th and the early part of the 21st century, cities have been designed to produce diagrams of smooth and homogenous flows. However, distributed personal technologies produce virtual layers that unevenly map onto the city, resulting in turbulent forces that computational platforms aim to conceal behind a visual narrative of accuracy, cohesion, anticipation, and order. By focusing on SIFT algorithms and their ability to extract n-dimensional vectors from two-dimensional images, this research explores computational workflows that mobilize turbulence towards the production of indeterminate form. These forms demarcate a new kind of challenge for both architecture and the city, whereby a cultural appetite to deploy algorithms that produce a smooth and seamless image of the world comes hand in hand with the turbulent and disruptive autonomy of those very same algorithms. By revisiting Urbanisme, a new set of architectural objectives are established that contextualize SIFTS within an urban agenda.

summary Ubiquitous computing enables us to decipher the biosphere’s anthropogenic dimension, what we call the Urbansphere (Pasquero and Poletto 2020). This machinic perspective unveils a new postanthropocentric reality, where the impact of artificial systems on the natural biosphere is indeed global, but their agency is no longer entirely human. This paper explores a protocol to design the Urbansphere, or what we may call the urbanization of the nonhuman, titled DeepGreen. With the development of DeepGreen, we are testing the potential to bring the interdependence of digital and biological intelligence to the core of architectural and urban design research. This is achieved by developing a new biocomputational design workflow that enables the pairing of what is algorithmically drawn with what is biologically grown (Pasquero and Poletto 2016). In other words, and more in detail, the paper will illustrate how generative adversarial network (GAN) algorithms (Radford, Metz, and Soumith 2015) can be trained to “behave” like a Physarum polycephalum, a unicellular organism endowed with surprising computational abilities and self-organizing behaviors that have made it popular among scientist and engineers alike (Adamatzky 2010) (Fig. 1). The trained GAN_Physarum is deployed as an urban design technique to test the potential of polycephalum intelligence in solving problems of urban remetabolization and in computing scenarios of urban morphogenesis within a nonhuman conceptual framework.

summary This paper describes and reflects about a workshop activity in the field of Digital Manufacturing technologies to build responsive shelters that interact with their users and the environment. It addresses a teaching strategy intended to overcome tooling or the simple use of instruments and proposes instead to frame the production of objects using a new language, or a new operative strategy, directly linked to the production of the objects. It addresses a teaching strategy behind the workshop two main levels: first, by the development of technical skills by means of an operative action directly linked to the production of the object, and not apart from the action of making it (as in learning first and applying later). And second - and no less important -, it helped foster the maturation of critical thinking arising from the creation of a dynamic object of architecture - with moving parts and programmed to respond to its users.

title What makes a city ‘smart’?

summary Taking advantage of information and communications technology tools and techniques for city administration, whether it is for urban planning activities, for transport solutions or many other purposes, is not a new concept. However, in order for a city to be classified as ‘smart’, a synthesis of intelligence that transcends mere utilisation is essential. This article analyses the increasing use of information and communications technology and sensing technologies in cities by examining this new way of city governing from a critical perspective. Existing projects and initiatives were investigated to find out how, and to what extent, these tools are being employed by cities. The advantages and the current shortcomings of smart city are also discussed in order to understand the viability of using these tools.

title Accepting the robotic other: Why real dolls and spambots suggest a near-future shift in architecture’s architecture

summary With weak Artificial Intelligence in the pockets of the majority of American adults, a societal introduction of a strong Artificial Intelligence or sentience seems close. Although the “intelligence” of our phones’ intelligence can be laughably brittle, the learning capacity demonstrated by the Internet of Things suggests more robust intelligence is on the way, and some would say it has already arrived. Several private technology firms have asserted that a robust Artificial Intelligence already exists and thought leaders within computation are lining up to ensure that it is not evil. Regardless of the morality of Artificial Intelligence, if our charge as architects is to design occupiable space, then we need to consider post-anthropocentric ecologies as well as how to adapt our design strategies to reflect inclusion of other species. This article describes two linked lines of thought, a meditation on the pending societal inclusion of the robotic other and why that robotic sentience may arrive from an unexpected origin and can reshape how we conceive of architecture itself.

summary In the context of environmental consideration and im- provement of living standards, design of high performance buildings that are both comfortable and energy saving is important. Simulation tools (such as CFD) enables analysing and visualizing environmental factors (such as temperature and airflow) based on the design proper- ties and can be used to improve the building design for better perfor- mance. However, these tools have limitations in providing interactivi- ty with users for creating multiple CFD visualization results to be used for analysing design options. This research presents an integrated de- sign tool which consists of CFD and VR technologies. The proposed system visualizes CFD results in a VR environment together with ar- chitectural design. Additionally, it enables configuring CFD parame- ters within the VR environment and allows repeatedly executing simu- lation and visualizing updated results. The proposed system enables visualizing information in relationship with the actual architectural design, space configuration and thermal environment, and provides ef- ficient design feedbacks.

summary The design process of a building often involves many dif- ferent actors and people with different experiences, level of knowledge and ability to interpret information. The most common in- formation media in these processes are 2D-drawings, documents and 3D images of design. These media can be difficult to interpret and un- derstand and could cause communication difficulties and design er- rors. However, in this context, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Virtual Reality (VR) have been shown to offer an efficient com- munication platform. In this paper we present and evaluate a portable immersive visualisation system that uses the BIMs directly from the design tools. The system is validated in a real construction project, where the different disciplines in the design process used the system. The result was collected through interviews and observation during usage of the system. All the participants expressed that this type of visual interface helped them to get another level of understanding and perception of space, which lead to better decision-making process and resolving of design issues.

summary With the development of advance fabrication, several digi- tal fabrication approaches have been developed. These approaches en- able better form exploration than the conventional manufacturing pro- cess. But, the built examples mostly rely on advance machinery which was not familiar or available in developed country where construction workers are still abundant. Meanwhile, much knowledge gathers in the field practice. This research is aimed to explore an alternative con- struction workflow and method with the combination of mass custom- ization and conventional construction method and to propose the structure system that emphasized this alternative workflow and meth- od. Lattice structure was proposed. The conventional construction method was used in the struts production and mass customization method, laser cutting, and was used for connection production. The algorithmic process was used mainly for data mining, details design, and component production. The backtracking was needed to be pre- dicted and addressed previously. Considerations that will be needed to be tested by further example are on the transition from the digital pro- cess to the manual process. Next research could be for analysing the other engineering aspect for this prototype and suggesting other struc- tural system with more optimal combination of conventional construc- tion and mass customization.

summary Since the emergence of the concept of user-generated content websites – Web 2.0, Internet communications have developed as a powerful personal and social phenomenon. Many Internet applications have become partially or entirely related to the concept of social network; and cyberspace has become a space about ‘us’ not ‘where’ we are. This paper investigates the theoretical grounds of the effect of cyber experience on changing the individuals’ uses of the public spaces, and sustaining this change through maintaining the ties and reciprocal influence between actions in physical and cyber spaces. It aims at examining the impact of cyber territories on the perception, definition and effectiveness of personal space within different circumstances; and its role in changing the uses of spaces where people used to act habitually. The personal space, here, will be represented as the core of both: change and consistency – the space of bridging the reciprocal effect of cyber and physical counterparts, which is transformed through the experience of physical events mediated into the cyberspace. The paper is part of a study which looks at the case of Tahrir Square during the Egyptian political movement in 2011. We will compare the activists’ actions and practices in the Square during different events of non-routine use of the square and its surroundings. The case study will show the level of consistency in the features of the produced personal space within different waves of the revolutionary actions for all that different circumstances, motivations and results.

summary The gradual rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing visibility among many research disciplines affected Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). Architectural deep learning (DL) approaches are being developed and published on a regular basis, such as retrieval (Sharma et al. 2017) or design style manipulation (Newton 2019; Silvestre et al. 2016). However, there seems to be no method to evaluate highly constrained spatial configurations for specific architectural domains (such as housing or office buildings) based on basic architectural principles and everyday practices. This paper introduces an automatic constraint-based consistency checker to evaluate the coherency of semantic spatial configurations of housing construction using a small set of design principles to evaluate our DL approaches. The consistency checker informs about the overall performance of a spatial configuration followed by whether it is open/closed and the constraints it didn't satisfy. This paper deals with the relation of spaces processed as mathematically formalized graphs contrary to existing model checking software like Solibri.

summary The increasing population size of cities makes the urban fabric ever more complex and more disintegrated into smaller areas, called neighbourhoods. This project applies methods from geoscience and software engineering to the process of identification of those neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods, by nature, are defined by connec- tivity, centrality and similarity. Transport and geospatial datasets are used to detect the characteristics of places. An unsupervised learning algorithm is then applied to sort places according to their characteris- tics and detect areas with similar make up: the neighbourhood. The at- tributes can be static like land use or space syntax attributes as well as dynamic like transportation patterns over the course of a day. An un- supervised learning algorithm called Self Organizing Map is applied to project this high dimensional space constituting of places and their attributes to a two dimensional space where proximity is similarity and patterns can be detected – the neighbourhoods. To summarize, the proposed approach yields interesting insights into the structure of the urban fabric generated by human movement, interactions and the built environment. The approach represents a quantitative approach to ur- ban analysis. It reveals that the city is not a polychotomy of neigh- bourhoods but that neighbourhoods overlap and don’t have a sharp edge.

summary Landformations have not historically been the purview of design production or intervention. Whether it is the spatial extensions in which they emerge, the temporal extensions in which they operate, the complexities of their generative and sustaining processes, or a cultural and institutional deference to a notion of natural processes, designers as individuals or design as a discipline has not treated landformation as an area of design inquiry. But the inability to grasp nature fully has not stopped geological-scale manipulation by humans. In fact, anthropogenic activity is responsible for the re-formation of more of the Earth’s surface than all other agents combined. And yet as designers we often disregard this transformation as a design problem, precisely because it eludes the artifices of information visualization employed by designers. This paper examines ongoing research into the generation of speculative landformations through an analysis of underlying geological and anthropogenic processes as the quantitative basis for creating generative computational models (figure 1). The Speculative Landformations Project posits human geological-scale activity as a design problem by expanding the operability and agency of environmental design practice through hybrid human/digital computations.
