summary A thin line lies between reality and fiction; what is mentally imagined and what is visualized. It all depends on how ideas and images are perceived or what neurological activity is triggered in the user’s brain. Architects and designers spare no effort or tools in presenting buildings, architecture or designs in all forms or ways that would augment users’ experience whether on the perceptual or the cognitive level and in both the digital or the physical environments. In a progressive tendency they, the designers, tend to rely more and more on digitizing their vision and mission, which subsequently give them, impressive and expressive superiority, that would influence the users conscious on the one hand and manipulate their subconscious on the other. Within that process designers work hard to break any mental firewall that would prevent their ideas from pervading the space of any mental environment the user, build or visualize. In that context, to what extent such ways of mental entertainments used by architects, legitimize deception in design? What distinguishes employing the rhythmic simulation of the narrative fictional inceptions (virtual reality) from deploying the adaptive stimulation of the experience modeling conceptions. The difference between planting an idea and constructing an idea. It is not the intention of the paper to prove the failure of the computer aided design neither to stand against the digital architectural design media and applications development. It is rather to present a different way of understanding of how architectural design whether virtual, digital, or real can stimulates and induces codes and messages that is correlated to the brainwave cognitive attributes and can generate a narrative brain environment where the brain can construct and simulate its own fictional design. Doing so, the paper will review certain experimental architectural events and activities which integrate sound and sight elements and effects within some electronic, technical and digital environments.

summary This paper explores the use of atmosphere within a digital space to evoke complex emotional response from virtual inhabitants of the space. Within architectural representation a shift to architectural visualisations in digital mediums have lost the prominence of the sensual communication of atmosphere and emotion in the abstract component of space. Sentimentality and the Digital Expanse constructs a methodology to reintroduce this sensuality into digital space, that draws from knowledge of both the unfamiliar atmosphere and the technical Presence to allow an iterative articulation of objective atmospheric design within digital space.

summary This study focused on the optimal design of adaptive build- ing fac?ade for achieving better energy performance. Iterative fac?ade components design are studied between virtual and physical models with integrated tools of BIM, parametric design and sensor devices. The main objectives of this study are: (1) exploring systematic design process via the analysis of adaptive components in responsive fac?ade design; (2) developing compliance checking system for green building regulations; (3) developing optimization system for adaptive fac?ade design process. This paper demonstrated the integration of various digital design methods and concluded with the energy modelling re- sults of a demo project unit for various fac?ade component designs.

title Parametrically Fabricated Joints: Creating a Digital Workflow

summary Timber joinery for furniture and architectural purpose has always been identified as a skill or craft. The craft is the demonstration of hand machined skill and precision which is passed down or developed through the iteration of creation and refined reflection. Using digital fabrication techniques provides new, typically unexplored ways of creating and designing joints. It is as if these limitations which bind the ratio of complexity and use are stretched. This means that these joints, from a technical standpoint, can be more advanced than historically hand-made joints as digital machines are not bound by the limitations of the human. The research investigated in this paper explores the ability to create sets of joints in a parametric environment that will be produced with CNC machines, thus redefining the idea of the joint through contemporary tools of creation and fabrication. The research also aims to provide a seamless, digital workflow from the flexible, parametric creation of the joint to the final physical fabrication of it. Traditional joints, more simple in shape and assembly, were first digitally created to ease the educational challenges of learning a computational workflow that entailed the creation and fabrication of geometrically programmed joints. Following the programming and manufacturing of these traditional joints, more advanced and complex joints were created as the understanding of the capabilities of the software and CNC machines developed. The more complex and varied joints were taken from a CAD virtual environment and tested on a 3-axis CNC machine and 3D printer. The transformation from the virtual environment to the physical highlighted areas that required further research and testing. The programmed joint was then refined using the feedback from the digital to physical process creating a more robust joint that was informed by reality.

summary This paper advocates alternative methods to overcome the impossibility of realising ‘perfect’ digital designs. It discusses Hong Kong’s 2015 ‘ZCB Bamboo Pavilion’ as a methodological case study for the design and construction of architecture from unprocessed natu- ral bamboo. The paper critically evaluates protocols set up to deal with errors resulting from precise digital design systems merging with inconsistent natural resources and onsite craftsmanship. The paper starts with the geometric and tectonic description of the project, illus- trating a complex and restrictive construction context. Bamboo’s unique growth pattern, structural build-up and suitability as a bending- active material are discussed and Cantonese bamboo scaffolding craftsmanship is addressed as a starting point for the project. The pa- per covers protocols, construction drawings and assembly methods developed to allow for the incorporation and of large building toler- ances and dimensional variation of bamboo. The final as-built 3d scanned structure is compared with the original digital model. The pa- per concludes by discussing the necessity of computational architec- tural design to proactively operate within a field of real-world inde- terminacy, to focus on the development of protocols that deal with imperfections, and to redirect design from the virtual world towards the latent opportunities of the physical.

summary This paper follows our evaluation and research into designing tangible physical media for the purposes of teaching building physics to undergraduate architecture students. These media interfaces make use of a virtual environment to promote an understanding of the cycles, which govern architectural and urban projects (for example solar studies, the flow of heat, air and water). This project aims to create an ecology of devices which can be used by students to self-direct themselves and harbour critical making in their research methods (with the explicit intent of dissolving the barrier between design and research). The basic premise of this research, is that in light of growing student numbers, more students lacking confidence in numeracy skills as well as the desire to have self-directed or group-directed learning, tangible media has a promising role to play. There are several reasons for this optimism. The first is that a better sense of intuition is gained from an interactive model over reading notes from a lecture or textbook. The second is that tangible media engages in other modes of learning, being valuable to students who have an aptitude for kinesthetic and spatial learning over text-dominant learning.

summary The use of models is one of the oldest media for creating, communicating and representing ideas throughout the ages. An investigation into the nature and characteristics of two modelling techniques in architectural design, i.e. physical and digital modeling, was conducted in the educational and professional domains in two countries. The aim of this study was to establish: (a) the degree of tangibility in model making as opposed to conventional and computational design approach; and (b) the iconic limitation of both types of modelling in design. To this end a survey was carried out among practising architects and students of architecture to establish their preferences and practices with respect to physical and virtual modelling. Some face-to-face interviews were conducted and an online questionnaire was distributed to both the aspiring and established architects. Data gathered through the questionnaire survey, interviews and photographs of the modelling process was analysed to come to tangible conclusions. Hence, this paper presents an insight into the merits and demerits of both the physical and virtual modeling techniques as seen through the eyes of professional and training architects.

summary This paper will summarise the findings from creating and implementing a visually high quality Virtual Reality (VR) experiment as part of an international architecture exhibition. It was the aim to represent the architectural spatial qualities as well as the atmosphere created from combining natural and artificial lighting in a prominent not yet built project. The outcome is twofold: Findings concerning the integration of VR in an exhibition space and findings concerning the experience of the virtual space itself. In the exhibition, an important aspect was the unmanned exhibition space, requiring the VR experience to be self-explanatory. Observations of different visitor reactions to the unmanned VR experience compared with visitor reactions at guided tours with personal instructions are evaluated. Data on perception of realism, spatial quality and light in the VR model were collected with qualitative and quantitative methods at two different occasions and setups after the exhibition, both showing a high degree of immersion and experience of reality.

summary Contemporary knowledge working environments are rapidly evolving alongside the digital and virtual technologies used for knowledge work. Contemporary offices range from cellular offices with assigned desks to activity-based offices with shared-desk policies and location independent blended working. Furthermore, advanced technologies, such as intelligent and adaptive lighting, are being implemented in our everyday surroundings, including working environments. The changes require adaptation from both knowledge workers and architectural elements of the environments. We propose that knowledge work environments should be explored from user-centric point of view and we aim to elucidate how the physical design of the workplace enhances well-being, creativity and innovation of their users. The various parameters of knowledge work environments should be specified through architectural design process but also through ethnographic methods, which enable us to retrieve the parameters of knowledge work environments users deem important. Using both spatial design and functional design approach we will challenge the multidimensional problem field of designing collaborative knowledge work environments.

title Reciprocal transformations between music and architecture as a real-time supporting mechanism in urban design

summary The more complex our cities become, the more difficult it is for designers to use traditional tools for understanding and analyzing the inner essence of an eco-system such as the contemporary urban environment. Even many of the recently crafted digital tools fail to address the necessity for a more holistic design approach which captures the virtual and the physical, the immaterial and the material. Handling of massive chunks of information and classification and assessment of diverse data are nowadays more crucial than ever before. We see a significant potential in combining the fields of composition in music and architecture through the use of information technology. Merging the two fields has the intense potential to release new, innovative tools for urban designers. This article describes an innovative tool developed at the Technical University of Crete, through which an urban designer can work on the music transcription of a specific urban environment applying music compositional rules and filters in order to identify discordant entities, highlight imbalanced parts, and make design corrections. Our cities can be tuned.

summary Architectural design in this ‘digital age’ is becoming more embedded within virtual computer aided design environments. This study expands this virtual design environment back into physical realms through the use of microelectronic wind sensing technology. An interactive and flexible wind sensing system (open source minia- ture portable wind tunnel and wind sensors) was evaluated for its abil- ity to simulate and measure the effects of wind. Physical models of four high-rise buildings were constructed to evaluate ground level pe- destrian comfort resulting from the degree of torsional twist in the building form. The model investigation formed a case study for evalu- ating of the low-cost miniature portable wind tunnel and microelec- tronic wind sensing system for comparison with an industrial aeronau- tical wind tunnel and high precision wind sensors.

summary This paper proposes a novel concept and practice to engage the BIM model as a control system of building energy performance service. This issue can be divided into two sub-issues including the development of more eco-friendly fac?ade which can interact with its local environment, and the related active control system which can process the environmental parameters for eco-friendly actions. This research designs the Parametric Adaptive Skin System (PASS) to en- gage the adaption of natural sunlight use for higher building perfor- mance. PASS consists of kinetic fac?ade components dominated by the BIM-based parametric engine called Dynamo. The PASS prototype demonstrates that the workflows is successful in using a real light sen- sor plus simulated solar terms to drive the interaction of virtual Revit model and physical PASS model.

summary This research investigates the aesthetics of a shared agency between humans, computation and physical material. ‘Chocolate’ is manipulated in physical and virtual space simultaneously to extract aesthetic conditions that are a sum of human and non-human relations. This is an attempt to further the knowledge of designing, giving physical and digital materials force in determining their own aesthetics. The research springs from work in speculative aesthetics, particularly N. Katherine Hayles’s OOI (object-oriented inquiry) and Graham Harman’s OOO (object-oriented ontology) and explores how these ideas impact contemporary computational architectural design. To study this, a simple material has been chosen, chocolate, and used as a vehicle to investigate the dynamics of physical and digital materials and their shared/differing ‘resistances to human manipulation’ (Pickering 1995). Digital chocolate is ‘melted’ through virtual heat, and the results printed and cast in real chocolate, to be further manipulated in real space. The resistances and feedback of physical and digital chocolate to human ‘prodding’ (Hayles 2014) are analyzed in terms of a material’s qualities and tendencies in digital space versus those in physical space. Observations from this process are used to speculate on an aesthetics where humans, computation and physical material are mutually agential. This research is a pilot for a larger study taking on more complex conditions, such as building and cities, with a view to broadening how aesthetics is understood in architectural design. The contribution of this research to the field of architectural computation is thus in areas of aesthetic speculation and human/non-human architectural authorship.

title HiGame: Improving elderly well-being through horticultural interaction

summary Family support is the key to the well-being problems of elderly. Unlike health problem, mental problem often depends on the social network of elderly. How to enhance elderly well-being problems will become how to increase the interaction between elderly and their family. Horticultural interaction proves to be an effective but smooth impact on improving well-being problems of elderly. By designing a horticultural interaction game for motivating or invoking the communication between elderly and their family members, the prototype is developed based on the framework of behavior setting and semi-fixed features. Three groups of games, physical games, virtual games, and spatial interaction games, are analyzed and 14 cases are studied and evaluated for the features required. Particularly, spatial interaction games with both physical and virtual games are brought into scope, and HiGame (Horticultural Interaction Game, hi game) is developed. Five scenarios using sensor network and mobile interface are unleashed and tested in an experiment with two sets of elderly family participants. HiGame has connection to both physical and virtual spaces for elderly and their family. Elderly interact with distant family through physical watering, weeding, and fertilizing. And distant family use virtual game to support elderly. The interaction process can be further enhanced with the following: (1) separating the tasks for elderly and family ends individually and then cooperating together might enforce the intergenerational interaction and reflection on cooperation in the gaming process; (2) the connection among each scenario can be further developed into a different process, such as competition of different members for helping the elderly to complete certain task might motivate the game experience further.

summary We build on previous technological developments in CAAD by looking into parametric design exploration and the development of the concept of parametricism. We use the phenomenological backdrop to account for our physical experiences and encounters as well as our mental ones; both evident in the link between parametric design as a process and an outcome. In specific, we previously examined two particular metaphors. The first metaphor addressed aspects of virtual environments that resemble our physical world; In other words, computer model as physical model and digital world as material world. In this volume, we extend the exploration into aspects of virtual environments and their resemblance to physical environments by looking at ‘performance’ aspects: the way in which environments are sensed, measured, tracked and visualised. Moreover, we reflect on matters and materiality in both virtual and physical space philosophically, theoretically, practically and reflectively. The second metaphor looked into the modes and means of interaction between our bodies and such virtual environment. Here we extend the investigation to look at the ways in which measures of environmental performance influence human interaction in real environments. The exploration takes us further to look into the area of design fabrication of the built environment, and methods in which developed processes meet environmental performance requirements, and the innovative outcomes that lead to disruptive technologies getting introduced into design and we revisit parametric design under this focus area.
