summary The research presented in this paper seeks to examine how architecture and computational tools can be used to communicate on multiple levels by incorporating a series of qualitative and quantitative measures as criteria for a spatial and architectural design. Air is taken as a material that has the capacity to create boundaries, yet unless under extreme conditions often remains invisible. Varying in qualities such as temperature, humidity and pollution, the status of air is highly local to a particular context. The research explores how rendering air visible through an architectural intervention made of networked sentient prototypes can be used in the reation of a responsive outdoor public space. Although humans' ability to perceive and respond to stimuli is highly advanced, it is nevertheless limited in its spectrum. Within the urban context specifically, the information, material and flux being produced is becoming ever more complex and incomprehensible. While computational tools, sensors and data are increasingly accessible, advancements in the fields of cognitive sciences and biometrics are unraveling how the mind and body works. These developments are explored in tandem and applied through a proposed methodology. The project aims to negotiate the similarities and differences between humans and machines with respect to the urban environment. The hypothesis is that doing so will create a rich output, irreducible to a singular reading while heightening user experience and emphasizing a sense of place.

summary This paper describes the implementation of a massive online open course of parametric design. Firstly, the justification for understanding design education in an online system is discussed. A conceptualization of computational geometry as a didactic axis for teaching parametric design is posed. To achieve an evaluation of the course, a peer evaluation which had a rubric for each topic, based on a matrix of possibilities, was implemented. The viability of this evaluation system is discussed. Finally, the important and necessary items for success, as well as the disadvantages of this type of courses is concluded.

summary Polymorphism, the ability of a substance to exist as multiple, different, crystalline solids is a subject of much interest in the fields of chemistry, pharmacy and crystallography. In some cases, polymorphs can be found to interconvert, usually in response to changes in the physical environment such as changes in temperature or pressure. The ability of structures composed of identical building blocks to interconvert is relevant to the field of architecture where architectural artefacts may require to respond to transient demands. Here we describe the phenomenon of polymorphism and the relevance to the architectural field, together with the development of a bespoke software plugin to allow polymorphic crystal structures to be used in design.

summary Architecture is a discipline with a long history of engagement with representational techniques borrowed from artforms such as painting and drawing. Historically, these techniques enable artists to translate three-dimensional space into a two-dimensional medium, while architecture tends to work in reverse, using the latter to express yet-to-be-realized projects in the former. This investigation leads to specific methods of linear perspectival representation that manipulate our perception of spatial depth, such as trompe l’oeil and anamorphic projection. Referencing these methods, we introduce the concept of an optically illusive architecture. While referencing a wide range of visually deceptive effects, we focus on synthesizing two-dimensional patterns into three-dimensional objects for the purpose of producing a depthless reading of three-dimensional space. In this paper, we outline optically illusive architecture and look at the initial stages of a design experiment that attempts to bring the perception of flatness into a three-dimensional object. This is achieved by building a simple algorithm that reverses linear perspectival projection to produce two-dimensional effects through a three-dimensional physical object. We analyze the results by comparing the two- and three-dimensional projections against one another from varying points of view in space, and speculate on the possible applications for such a design.

summary The university student faces multiple challenges to acquiring knowledge for their degrees. We study the ways the architecture student at Universidad de Sonora overcomes such difficulties, in a process of academic resilience, through the use of a video tutorial repository covering topics related to architecture scale model fabrication, among other study materials. This repository meets the demand for web-based, Spanish-language study materials. It was tested in terms of usefulness and acceptability: video tutorials were not only considered helpful by the students, but a handy tool when attempting to learn new abilities and knowledge, or reinforce those they already acquired.

summary This paper reports the results of a protocol study which explores behavior of designers while they design in pairs using sketching (analogue and remote) and 3D modeling tools (co-located and remote) in co-located and remote locations. The design protocol videos were collected, transcribed, segmented and coded with the customized coding scheme. The coded protocol data was examined to understand the changes of designers’ co-design process and their activities of making representation in four different settings. This paper discusses the impact of location and types of representation on collaborative design. The paper concludes that designers were able to adapt their collaboration and design strategies in accordance with the affordability of the used digital environments.

title Emerging senses from Smart Cities phenomenon

summary The paper analyses the emerging senses from the Smart Cities phenomenon, using as background Lemos (2017), Maia (2013), Rozestraten (2016), Söderström, Paache & Klauser (2014) and evaluating the speeches found in the SmartCity Expo Curitiba. We identified three basic senses: the binary utopia/ficcion, business and informational city, discussed by philosophers such as Foucault (2017), Lévy (2011) e Harvey (2014). The results outline the importance of political role of technology and adverts that it must not be controlled by business. Finally, the paper concludes that the smartest technology is one that opens space to the inclusion of greater human expressivity and subjectivity, not inducing a space of control.

summary This paper presents a live and tested solution that enables home buyers to choose and customise their future homes in a web browser. It allows future owners and residents to configure and visualise their home in 3D but also keep it affordable by displaying the construction costs back to users in real-time. The proposed solution is analysed in the context of current housing market, excising web and BIM technologies and compared to currently available solutions. Additionally, we have been tracking visitor behaviour by using web analytics and can draw some conclusions about its performance.

summary Flat form is an ongoing research that introduces a workflow that aims to enhance the contribution of the user during the design process. At first, implicit as well as explicit data, about both space as a living place and the user as a personality, will be captured. Then, the data will be analyzed in order to build an ontology that will eventually be visualized in human readable format. After that, an external application will evaluate the resulting data structure, pointing out any potential conflict between the spatial arrangement and the user’s desires. The outcome will be visualized in a form of a topological diagram that will constitute a new augmented “active” memory for the architect.

summary Computers help run visually creative processes, yet they remain visually, sensually and tactually distant [1]. This research introduces a drawing and painting process that infuses digital and analog ways of visual-making [2]. It implements a computationally broadened workflow for hand-drawing and painting, and develops a custom drawing apparatus. Primary goal is to develop a computationally generative painting system while retaining embodied actions and tactile material interactions that are intrinsic to the processes of handdrawing and watercolor painting. A non-symbolic, open-ended and trace-based shape calculation system emerges.

summary Despite the cutting edge developments in science and technology, architecture to a large extent still tends to favor form over matter by forcing materials into predefined, often superficial geometries, with functional aspects relegated to materials or energy demanding mechanized systems. Biomaterials research has instead shown a variety of physical architectures in which form and matter are intimately related (Fratzl, Weinkamer, 2007). We take inspiration from the morphogenetic processes taking place in plants' leaves (Sharon et al., 2007), where intricate three-dimensional surfaces originate from in-plane growth distributions, and propose the use of 3D printing on pre-stretched textiles (Tibbits, 2017) as an alternative, material-based, form-finding technique. We 3D print open fiber bundles, analyze the resulting wrinkling phenomenon and use it as a design strategy for creating three-dimensional textile surfaces. As additive manufacturing becomes more and more affordable, materials more intelligent and robust, the proposed form-finding technique has a lot of potential for designing efficient textile structures with optimized structural performance and minimal usage of material.

summary "Architectural harmony with natural systems - including natural light - is essential to the wellbeing of building occupants" (Shrum, 2017). A preliminary study of existing daylight recommendations in standards and sustainability certificates, applied in Denmark, revealed a neglectance of the importance of receiving direct sunlight in dwellings. The qualities of sunlight were defined through a modest qualitative analysis, resulting in five parameters: Sunlight Hours, Winter Sun, Morning Sun, Golden Hours and Magic Moments. These were defined as specific time periods supported by research on the visual and non-visual effects on well-being. The parameters were subsequently translated into a parametric analysis tool, using design application Rhinoceros 3D and elaborating on a new usage of the design software Ladybug Tools. This analysis tool is predicted to be of high use to identify problematic apartments in the architectural design phase, to compare different design proposals and to meet the individual needs of new occupants.
