summary This paper presents the results of the creation of a game, composed of building blocks, conceived as didactic material for the minimum residences design. The game was designed to be produced by rapid prototyping and digital manufacturing resources. Methodologically, the research was based on both a literature review and an empirical research on the use of a set of building blocks. The text shows the critical analysis and reflections on the results achieved with a workshop entitled "Designing compact homes with building blocks".

summary 22º48'54" - Under the Sunlight is an architectural installation, an experimentation product of an academic research using parametric algorithms, computational design and digital fabrication in it's conception and execution. It's title and form are answers to the sun path and it's incidence in a specific place - the Exploratory Science Museum at Unicamp (State University of Campinas). The installation is a honeycomb structure of twelve unique modules digitally fabricated from MPU, a composed board of polyethylene and aluminium, oriented with the different sun positions during the day in Campinas. Five of those twelve modules are covered in panels with different openings, which provide different shading patterns according with the evolution of the day.

summary Analyzing the results of multi-objective optimization and building performance simulation can be a very tedious process that requires navigating between different software and tools. There is a clear scarcity in visualization tools that combine methods for big data analysis and design decision support tools that integrate detailed information for each design and parameter. Having a single visualization tool that provides methods to both visualize and analyze a large amount of data, understand the relation between objectives and variables, and having the ability to compare and analyze the preferred designs thoroughly can support the process of design decision making. In this paper, previous attempts to develop better data visualization tools for both integrated building simulation and optimization outputs were analyzed, then guidelines and a visualization tool prototype that can be effective in decision making and analyzing multi-objective optimizations results was presented.

summary This article aims to describe the ephemeral qualities that typography acquires in the digital context, caused by the polyvalence of the algorithmic code, which, from generative programming, allows the user to interact with the typographic object. These reflection are realized through the study of four projects: “Lettree” (2004), “Pyrographie” (2005), “Falling in Love” (2016) and “He liked Thick Word Soup” (2014). The observations were made by drawing a comparison between the concept of “matter” in the computational scenario proposed by the design philosopher Vilém Flusser (2015) and the quality of “fluidity” observed in the images created by digital generative programs.

summary In this study, an Augmented Reality (AR) system is developed to be used for visualizing design projects of buildings. In such design projects, it is desirable to enable design stakeholders visualizing the outcomes of different design options to reduce the resistance and hesitation towards new design challenges. The research proposes an outdoor mark-er-less AR using Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) for the AR tracking. Our proposed system performs reconstruction and localization steps in real-time, as opposed to similar methods in which the reconstruction step is done offline. A case study has been performed for a de-sign scenario of buildings. The case study verified the performance of visualization and tracking.

summary We present a novel CAD/CAM apparatus and method for single-pass cutting of double-curved expanded polystyrene formworks. A rationalization approach was implemented using generic solvers in a popular free visual programming environment integrated into a well-known commercial CAD software, which allows finding elastica curve sections for processing double-curved NURBS surfaces. This procedure allows us to convert bending curves geometry into G-code coordinates for numerically controlling a flexible cutting hot-blade. A prototype 7-axis machine was experimentally validated in a series of cutting processes of EPS formworks to build a double-curved concrete pony wall.

summary This paper introduces a novel computational design methodology called topology-driven for the numerical form-finding of discrete networks and presents the essential building block for storing and processing information. Numerical form-finding focuses on computing the optimum geometric configuration of lightweight structures in which shape is the result of reciprocal dependencies between forces, material behaviors and structural performances. Among the design community, Dynamic Relaxation (DR) has gained in popularity given its capacity to support more flexible and interactive design spaces in form-finding. However, common implementations of networks models only focus on the interactive exploration of material and geometrical properties without further specification for topological dynamization. For facing this problematic, we propose an object-oriented approach to attach specific functionalities to particular pieces of data within the numerical schema. Here, we describe the implementation of a rule-based system for managing objects´ interactions in order to continuously track topological and geometrical changes. Based on this concept, larger design spaces can be developed for the interactive exploration of structural shapes.

summary This work is the outcome of a multidisciplinary collaboration in the context of the VidiaLab (Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada). It proposes an application of interactive video mapping techniques as a form of experiencing the Fray Bentos industrial landscape, declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015. An immersive environment was created by enriching a physical scale model of the site with projected digital images and information, providing new and attractive ways of interaction with the cultural heritage. Proposals for future work and educational applications of the developed tools are also discussed.

summary Museums exhibit a growing development in the world, promoting buildings with significant expressions. Nevertheless, the relation of the building and its environmental performance is fundamental in the conception of new buildings. The problem originates in the early stages of design, where it is not possible to evaluate it environmentally. The methodology uses three art museum buildings in the humid subtropical climate of Brazil, whose geometries are completely different. After analyzing and relating its performance to its environmental and geometric characteristics a parametric modeling tool is proposed and the digital manufacture as a product of the process has been carried out.

summary City environment is very much determined by the design of its streets and in particular by the design of its cross section. This paper shows a street cross section design interface where designs are controlled by an ontology and a parametric design system. The system keeps its semantic structure through the ontology and provides a design interface that understands the computer interaction needed by the urban designer. Real time visual analytics are used to support the design decision process, allowing designers to objectively compare designs and measure the differences between them, in order to make informed decisions.

summary Direct solar access and daylight requirements contribute significantly when it comes to shaping the layout and appearance of contemporary cities. Urban planning regulations in Estonia set the minimum amount of direct solar access that existing housing has the right to receive and new premises are required to get when new developments are built. The solar envelope and solar collection methods are used to define the volume and shape of new buildings that allow the due solar rights to the surrounding buildings, in the case of the former, and the portion of the own façades that receive the required direct solar access, in the case of the latter. These methods have been developed over a period of several decades, and present-day CAAD and environmental analysis software permits the generation of solar envelopes and solar collection isosurfaces, although they suffer from limitations. This paper describes an advanced method for generating solar collection isosurfaces and presents evidence that it is significantly more efficient than the existing method for regulation in Estonia’s urban environments.

summary This paper presents a new open-source structural analysis plugin for Grasshopper – RhinoRstab. The plugin bridges data between the worldwide established software: Rhinoceros3d and Dlubal RSTAB. The basic idea behind the approach is to create an interactive workflow between the architectural design on the one hand and a structural analysis tool on the other hand. In contrast to RhinoRstab, other analysis tools for Grasshopper predict the structural behaviour independent of its structural capacity. Thus, additional standalone software is necessary to verify the analysis of these plugins subsequently. To test the validity of this new tool, it is compared to a similar application, namely Karamba (a widely used structural analysis plugin for Rhinoceros/Grasshopper). Both tools are tested in different scenarios. The study shows that for some elements in a structural system and some calculation methods RhinoRstab and Karamba results differ strongly. However, regarding the runtime, Karamba operates faster than RhinoRstab.

summary Fiber composite materials have tremendous potential in architectural applications due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and their ability to be formed into complex shapes. Novel fabrication processes can be based on the unique affordances and characteristics of fiber composites. Because these materials are lightweight and have high tensile strength, a radically different approach to fabrication becomes possible, which combines low-payload yet long-range machines—such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)—with strong, precise, yet limited-reach industrial robots. This collaborative concept enables a scalable fabrication setup for long-span fiber composite construction. This paper describes the integrated design process and design development of a large-scale cantilevering demonstrator, in which the fabrication setup, robotic constraints, material behavior, and structural performance were integrated in an iterative design process.

summary The densification of urban spaces is a major challenge for future cities. With new forms of online consultation, we observe a movement towards open government in urban planning. A stronger participation between a more diverse body of players in a networked environment, is unveiling various discrepancies in the understanding of projects by the different actors in planning, due to access to and the comprehension of planning information. To recognise and utilise the associated capabilities of current transformations, communication between the actors in planning and their sharing of knowledge is vitally important. Information visualisation is an essential form of communication, prompting this explorative paper in considering elements specific to games visualisation and their implications for urban planning. Based on a framework for information visualisation in games it was found that the specifications for actor groups in planning processes mirror the specifications specific to target audience groups in games.

summary This article aims to demonstrate how a theoretical-didactic model and its respective teaching strategies for algorithmic-parametric logic can act as potential elements of innovation in the architectural design process. Based on the theories of parametric design thinking by Oxman (2017) and the studies by Woodbury (2010) and Romcy (2017), such strategies are based on the principle that algorithmic logic can be understood, in certain circumstances, as a procedural framework and not just an instrumental one. It will also be discussed how the situation of remote learning in the face of the COVID-19 crisis brought about the use of virtual teaching tools as an increment of the learning process.

summary This work seeks to continue the research started in 2017 about the triangle boat type, based on the traditional models of the municipality of Icapuí in Ceará / Brazil. The intention is to expand and refine the research, analyzing the construction process and the typology of the boats. For this, it is proposed to define a typology and a shape grammar of the boats and implement, in a digitally-based system, a formalized language. The methodology adopted in this work starts from a knowledge construction process following the Design Science Research strategy. The main result is an in-depth analysis of the description and representation of a vernacular design of the triangle boats. The documentation approach using parametric modeling offers great contributions to the memory and cultural heritage preservation, since an algorithmic description is able to retain information pertaining to both the material and immaterial part of the artifact.
