summary This paper examines the inherent possibilities for architectural production in automated deposition modeling techniques, primarily explored through the use of industrial robots in combination with plastic deposition heads. These robots, in combination with various polymers, toolpaths and colorations, served as a design ecology for the exploration of emergent behaviors in robotic construction. The relationship between geometry (Euclidian, topological, fractal), mechanical properties of material (plasticity, elasticity, viscosity, resilience), optical properties (color, absorbance, transmittance, scattering), and the gestural qualities of robotic toolpaths constitute the palette adopted for the presented project. The project combines the rigor of a platonic body (Figure 2) with the emergent properties of vague gestures. The introduction of moments of uncertainty in the process produces glitches that are embraced as an opportunity to find novel aesthetic conditions. The profound entanglement with the post-digital realm is discussed as the discursive plane of thinking applied to the project.

summary We present a framework to generate intelligent spatial assemblies from sets of digitally encoded spatial parts designed by the architect with embedded principles of prefabrication, assembly awareness, and reconfigurability. The methodology includes a bespoke constraint-solving algorithm for autonomously assembling 3D geometries into larger spatial compositions for the built environment. A series of graph-based analysis methods are applied to each assembly to extract performance metrics related to architectural space-making goals, including structural stability, material density, spatial segmentation, connectivity, and spatial distribution. Together with the constraint-based assembly algorithm and analysis methods, we have integrated a novel application of deep reinforcement (RL) learning for training the models to improve at matching the multiperformance goals established by the user through self-play. RL is applied to improve the selection and sequencing of parts while considering local and global objectives. The user’s design intent is embedded through the design of partial units of 3D space with embedded fabrication principles and their relational constraints over how they connect to each other and the quantifiable goals to drive the distribution of effective features. The methodology has been developed over three years through three case study projects called ArchiGo (2017–2018), NoMAS (2018–2019), and IRSILA (2019-2020). Each demonstrates the potential for buildings with reconfigurable and adaptive life cycles.

summary Cities are continuously produced through entropic processes that mediate between complex networked systems and the immediacy urban life. Emergent media technologies inform new relationships between information and matter, code and space to redefine new urban ecosystems. Modes of perceiving, experiencing and inhabiting cities are radically changing along with a radical transformation of the tools that we use to design. Cities as complex and systemic organisms require approaches that engage new multi-scalar strategies to connect the physical layer with the system of networked ecologies. This paper aims at investigating emerging and novel forms of reading and producing urban spaces reimagining the physical city through intelligent and mediated processes. Through data agency and responsive urban processes, the design methodology explored the materialization of a temporary pneumatic structure and membrane that tested material performance through fabrication and sensing practices through the pneuSENSE project developed in July 2016 in New York at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the 'HyperCities' IaaC- Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia - Global Summer School.

summary As the result of the demolishing decision of Humberto Perea was generated, a Seminar- Workshop on CG at Universidad del Norte with the purpose of evaluate his heritage´s modern movement in Barranquilla. The Seminar´s objective was to design a methodology for documenting the building through technologies: CG and mixed realities. The methodology contents two parts; First, the building incorporated into the context with previous to the demolition and with architectural survey. And second part was developed with the Seminar - Workshop and Immersive Virtual Reality. As conclusion was demonstrated that any heritage building can be documenting to be used by researchers.

summary In landscape design a vertical section is a representation that, comparatively, is less used than in architecture. However, given the current complexity of urban intervention, the section is a graphical tool of analytical and communicative interest to complement the information that plants give us. The paper is structured in three parts: the first presents the theoretical-conceptual framework of the research, in the second, some notable examples are studied, and in the third, a photomontage exercise is carried out in a course with students of landscaping.

summary We present a proof of concept of parametric 3D models of fully associative geometry and milling tool paths for the robotic machining of traditional timber joints, using a visual robot-programming environment integrated into a popular CAD software. A representative sample of traditional timber joints was obtained from a field survey conducted in Valparaíso, Chile. Each specimen was theoretically validated in nearly half a hundred carpentry treatises and manuals corresponding to the historical period in which the surveyed buildings were built. Parametric robotic milling prototypes were experimentally validated in manufacturing process using two industrial robots with different spindles and cutting tools.

summary This work reports the results of applying phenomenological methods during the final stage of architecture studies in Universidad del Bío-Bío. The introduced case study delves in the importance of designing research methodologies that promote interdisciplinary studies to achieve an integrated view of urban phenomena. In this work, we advance the understanding of the urban space by exploring graphic resources and digital recordings to characterize the soundscape of “Plaza de la Independencia” in the city of Concepción, Chile. Our findings focus on the relationship between the urban environment, the activities that take place and the sounds recorded in the urban space.

summary The paper discusses the intersection of two main agendas for Chilean governments that are BIM (Building Information Modeling) and BEAM (Building Environmental Assessment Methods). It shows the state-of-the-art in both fields in Chile as well as in the world, it discusses some previous efforts of integration; it found some new opportunities for collaboration and finally proposes a new framework that brings together BIM and BEAM. The development of the method includes BIM Models, databases and spread sheets for building energy Certification, it finally provides a semi-automatic environment where architects model their design in BIM and this Information is used as an input to the certification process. Potentials and risk of this method are discussed.

It is important that academic training considers a balance between the application of technology and design, and that future professionals are as competent in both digital and analog design.

summary This paper describes the implementation of a massive online open course of parametric design. Firstly, the justification for understanding design education in an online system is discussed. A conceptualization of computational geometry as a didactic axis for teaching parametric design is posed. To achieve an evaluation of the course, a peer evaluation which had a rubric for each topic, based on a matrix of possibilities, was implemented. The viability of this evaluation system is discussed. Finally, the important and necessary items for success, as well as the disadvantages of this type of courses is concluded.
